My kitty has so much curiosity, she escaped one day. Not exactly sure how she managed but she did. I made several posts on Facebook looking for her, asking people to keep an eye out, praying no one took her to keep her, while also praying that she didn't get hurt. I checked the Humane Society page, but didn't see her. Then suddenly someone tagged me in a post the next day on the Humane Society's page & there my cat was. Oh my goodness.. You can only imagine my delight. I messaged them immediately. And was there to pick her up the following day. They gave her vaccines because they didn't know if she was a stray or not, which I did appreciate, but at the same time worried that it might cause green to her being she had her vaccines already, but they assured me she'd be fine. They also offered to place a chip in her, so that in the event she were to escape again.. The Humane officer or someone with a scanner could use their scanner to find out her info & bring her home. I'm very grateful to the person who found her & turned her over to the Humane Society, as well as to the Humane Society for taking such great care of my cat while she was with them for a short stay.

Recently adopted a cat who had been there for over a month that was malnourished and his coat was oily and smelled. I feel so bad for the pets there as they are not receiving proper care. The adoption process was extensive and ridiculous. I understand screening people who get animals but you also push away the GOOD families!! Do not recommend going here for a pet ever. Check out other places first!

We adopted Winchester from there on Tuesday. They gave us information about his previous home, toys, treats, and were so nice. He's fitting in perfectly!

Go somewhere else if you want a good experience, otherwise prepare yourself for lots of red tape and heartbreak other animal shelters will not make you go through. We submitted our application 2 days ahead, took the day off work and drove 50 miles for a kitty. We fell in love with a kitty that they set you up with in a room to get acquainted. And then.....we were told they had not processed our application after almost 2 days with plenty of excuses and then we find out they will not even hold the animal you fell in love with while they take their time with your application. Drove back home 50 miles sad and depressed. And then there is the application itself that is REALLY over-reaching compared to other shelters I have been to. Was not asked to write several essays on pets care in the apps from other shelters. The only reason we did not give one star is because the facility is quite nice.

I guess I haven’t been to Marathon County animal shelter in a while. I am shocked that you can’t go back and look at the animals anymore. They make you fill something out and you still can’t view the animals in person! This is nuts. No wonder adoption is so hard for people who could give an animal a living home

They do a great job here everyone is so kind! I've adopted a couple times from them first a cat many years ago then 5 years ago we got our cockatiels Ducky and Gibbs & just recently we welcomed 3 wonderful Zebra finches into our home as well. They sing & talk back & forth across the room with the cockatiels which is so funny. We love it!They've helped when I came across a lost dog & when we lost ours. They've reunited both!

Wonderful selection of animals to look at. Won't let you visit animals unless you are serious about adopting, which is understandable. The volunteers are super friendly and always happy to talk to you about the animals.

Excellent place to adopt your new furry friend! Great staff, many pets to choose from, even a rabbit on my visit! Pet accessories available! The organization does an amazing job from the walk-in to meet the pets throughout your taking them home! They take adopting pets to forever homes very seriously, in order to interact with a pet one to one an application of serious interest needs to be completed. References are required and contacted. They want to ensure the very best opportunity for the pets to be given permanent placement with their safety, loving and responsible new owners. Love this place, the visit was awesome!

I got my dog from here a year ago and they made the process easy and helped me along the way. I can't thank them enough for all their help and for introducing me to my baby. Everyone I talked to was so nice and made the whole experience such a relief. I cannot recommend them enough.

I liked that we had made an appointment which insured it would be fairly quiet while trying to arrange for a possible adoption. Everyone was so helpful and patiently answered all our questions. They were upfront about the personality traits of the dogs that we were interested in. We have found them to care for the animals with respect and compassion. It was a wonderful experience for us and we ended up adopting a dog that was not our initial choice, only to find one that was a "good fit" for us. Thank you for a wonderful experience in helping us to adopt "DayDay". We love her already!!!

The staff and volunteers keep this facility clean and running smoothly, though wait times to talk to staff may be long during busy hours. The Marathon Humane center does check your references and background to protect the pets. I would highly recommend adopting here.

I would highly recommend visiting and adopting your next family pet from the Marathon County Humane Society! My family had the greatest experience and was thoroughly impressed with its facility and all of the staff that we worked with during our adoption process! During our visits, all of the animals at the shelter looked well cared for and healthy. The facility was clean and appeared to have good space for the animals during their stay, as well as additional meeting spaces where we were able to play with the dogs we adopted. The staff we worked with were all very knowledgeable and helpful. We adopted a bonded pair and the humane society made sure that they were both up to date on vaccinations and other health matters prior to sending them home with us and did a great job making sure we were a good match. You could tell how much care they have for the animals that pass through and their passion to find them their perfect forever home! Thank you, Lisa, and all of the staff at Marathon County Humane Society! We feel like we are the luckiest people in the world having adopted from you!!!

We adopted our new family member here recently, and the staff were always accommodating and made the experience simple and fast. The animals all look happy and well-cared for. I enjoy their programs - the cat yoga is adorable! Would definitely adopt from them again!

We adopted our dog here about a year ago, he is the biggest sweetheart and we love him to death. The application process is long and a little frightening. We weren't sure we would get chosen with our dog, but we were lucky. We have been here a number of times, the volunteers are usually super helpful, but the girls behind the desk are very to the point. Whenever we come in I feel them judging us and they don't seem very happy to work there. The meeting rooms do smell a little strong, but I'm sure the interactions don't always go as planned. They are a great shelter and please adopt, don't shop.

Every time we go to the Humane Society its always a fun experience. They care about the animals as well as the families or people coming to look at them. We will be adopting our second dog from them next week and giving him his furever home. We can't wait. They make sure that whichever animal you choose is a good fit for your family and do a great job at pairing families with their new animals. I would recommend them every time.

The humane society does wonderful work, staff are awesome & take great care of all animals at the shelter. They help reunite lost pets with their owners and work their hardest to find forever homes for all the animals in their care.

I had picked out a cat at the humane society and left to do some stuff while they processed my paperwork and when i came back to pick up the cat I was adopting they had told me that the cat had gone to a foster home. It was maybe an hour from when I filled out the paperwork and came back and just like that they sent the cat off to a foster home instead of a forever home. Since then I do not associate with the humane society if I don't have to. Everyone I know has had bad experiences with them and they charge way too much for a pet and the process is as if you are adopting a child. I understand they want the animals to go to good homes, but they can do a regular background check on someone and use that like most humane societies. I'm just very disappointed in how the shelter is run here. I wish they'd consider using some other humane society practices for adopting pets to find them homes and not have so many in the shelter. It's really sad to see.

Have visited the shelter many years ago. It was clean and cats had their own space. Did not look in the dog section.

We have adopted a dog and two cats from them. Yes, the application process seems like a lot of paperwork but it’s for the best interest of the animal! These people love and cherish every animal there. The staff is friendly and very helpful to make sure you find the animal that fits your lifestyle. Will go back to adopt more when the time is right.

Our experience at the Humane Society of Marathon County was amazing! Each and every staff member was so caring and welcoming! They went out of their way to help us find our perfect new family members. It is very clear that everyone there cares deeply for all of the animals and the animals for them! Lisa is absolutely amazing and truly a gem! She exceeded our expectations and we could not be happier! We would recommend the Human Society of Marathon County to anyone that is looking to give an animal a forever home. It is PAWSOME!

These 3 American finches recently joined our family. They love talking to our other feathered who were also adopted from here years ago Ducky & Gibbs (they love the show). They see each other from across the room & will sing & chatter back & forth throughout the day. I just love it! Everyone there is so nice. When you go it breaks my heart to see all the animals I want to bring all of them home! The people & volunteers work with these animals that have lost their homes or have never known a loving home on a daily basis and have to leave them day after day they know their stories. Sad this is why I will not buy a pet & have spayed & neutered every one of ours. We have rescued & fostered pets Love doing it. That's how we have 5 cats, 2 dogs, 1 foster hospice dog, 2 cockatiels, & now 3 finches. We love our menagerie! No longer have the outside animals LOL THANK YOU Marathon County Humane Society for all you do!

This shelter euthanized a sweet healthy 1 year old chow that an owner asked them to house while she was getting out of a bad situation and didn’t notify her that they were going to do this even though she was on the phone and checking in with them about paying for their services and trying to coordinate the pup’s pick up right up until the day before they decided to take the pup’s life.

Staff at HSMC are usually understaffed but they work hard and it shows! Lots of new, wonderful changes due to a new Director which was much needed. Animals are happy, healthy and very loved! Adoption process is thorough but is only to ensure they are going to good homes! I would much rather a pet go to a great home than to any homes where they won’t get the care they need.

First off like many on here I would give this place 0 Stars. After seeing all the bad reviews of The Humane Society I believe they should change their name. Because this place is definitely not humane. The place is understaffed and smells pretty bad when you walked in the door. Their application process is a joke it doesn't seem like they want to adopt any animals out. We recently lost our beloved boxer suddenly and unexpectedly. Our family wasn't ready to get another dog but we have so much love in our household and felt something was missing so we decided on getting a kitten. My daughter found and fell in love with an amazing kitten. So we started the application process and like I said before it was a complete joke it's basically like buying a house with all the information they need but we went through it anyway. We spent a total of at least 4 days visiting and asking questions but all we got was your application is in process. We have always brought our animals to the vet and have detailed records of everything. But after @ a month of questioning and inquiring, first being denied because we checked for declawing, but we don't care if it isn't declawed, then weeks of telling us our application was being reviewed just to be denied for lack records on a cat that we put on app that died years ago after 14yrs with our family. This place is a joke and seems to want to find any reason to deny adopting an animal out...because it is obviously better to keep an animal that could be loved emensely in a cage without much contact with a loving family. Do your homework before you give your money to this money-grubbing business.

My husband and recently adopted a border collie mix from the shelter. We were very impressed with the caring and professional staff, condition of the shelter and good record keeping of the history and progress of the dog before and after he arrived at the shelter. We have adopted rescue BC's in the past and have volunteered at other shelters.....but Maratrom County Humane Society surpassed our expectations! Thanks for a great experience...and a great forever furry family member! We'll keep in touch and share his many new adventures in the coming months and years!
