I adopted this sweet boy today from Northwoods Humane Society in Hayward. All of the staff were really considerate, polite, and friendly. They made the entire adoption process go smooth. We are so happy to have adopted White Paw. You can tell Northwoods staff truly care about the animals there. Highly recommend this place! ADOPT DON’T SHOP.

Wonderful folks! very attentive and caring both to the animals and to their potential humans.I would highly recommend Northwoods to anyone who needs a new four legged member to their family. Most of the animals are healthy and happy. But, if you have the capacity to care for a pet with higher needs, consider adopting one of the wonderful pets with health concerns. Either way, the folks working there will give you the guidance you need to find the animal in need of your home and love.

Didn't go in to the shelter because they were closed but they have two amazing dog parks to use. One side is for small dogs only, the other is much larger for large portions dog's. Both are off leash and well maintained with water sources and benches. The two are completely separated and large areas for the pups to run. Just a few miles outside of Hayward WI.

I recently rescued a small puppy. The staff was very friendly and made sure to check over my application. They even checked back with me two weeks later to make sure everything was okay.

We viewed the cat and kitten section . Very impressive. The facility was spotless and didn't have any odors. The cats and kitty's looked well cared for and appeared settled. The ones outside were playful and happy. Our caretaker guide was knowledgeable with each cats personality and is for sure good for them. Left you with a good feeling to adopt as well as support

You need to check out unannounced multiple times Stone Hill Doodles or Wagles Doodles in Hayward ran by Jesse Wagles. Over 5 of the doodles were terrified of humans then again their kids chase them and the one was hitting them with a plastic shovel. This is a puppy mill. They have zero relationship with the dogs. They breed and I feel sorry for every animal there. They need to be barred from every state from being able to have and / or breed dogs. The pup I got months ago still acts aloof. Those dogs are terrified of people except for the Golden Retrievers who are naturally loving. I sat in my vehicle crying seeing how these canines are treated like chickens. It’s called surprise visits for the next 10 years. It’s called reports from other people. Just because they will go in and have you wait to come out so everything’s clean before your arrival does not mean they are good to those animals. Talk about terrified of people. To say they are believers of God and to raise canines to be terrified of humans is just disgusting. They never ever need to be able to own a dog let alone breed.

I've adopted three dogs here. The staff was awesome & prices reasonable for the larger NW WI area. I'd only come here.

What a great shelter tucked away outside of Hayward. Acres of trails. Great outdoor play pens/kennels. We walked a dog we ended up adopting all over the place. Adoption process was easy. Staff was very informative and patient with our questions. Adopting is a big commitment. We didn't know we had so much love to give - our dog was one of our best decisions ever made - he was clearly well cared for and loved at NWHS.

Wonderful organization!! The president really cares about animals! The staff at the shelter are so dedicated and helpful to perspective adopting "parents", that it makes it feel like you're surrounded by family! The animals all seem to be very comfortable and adjusted. I am so impressed by the cat rooms! They have plenty of space to run and play, yet their own cage to retreat to, or stay in, if they aren't very sociable. I haven't met any like that yet! Most of the cats and kittens are very affectionate, will sit on your lap for as long as you want, and love to play! This is a well run shelter and should be commended for the wonderful staff! If our "fur-baby" family needs another brother or sister, I will definitely adopt from Northwoods! Please consider donating to help them continue in their wonderful efforts. This is a very worthy cause to support!

Very user friendly! Excellent staff! Operated off of grants, fundraiser, and donations! The shelter was the cleanest and well managed that I’ve seen in years!!!! Consider making a visit to volunteer or make a donation or even adopt a cat or dog. They are a no-kill Shelter and kudos to y’all for doing a great job!!! It takes lots of money to feed and vet all these animals. Consider a donation.😻🐶.Karolyn Owen JacksonStuttgart, Arkansas.

Amazing place that treats the animals with the best care. The dogs are walked daily and have nice play yards to run around and the cats have outdoor pens they can go out into and volunteers always in to love on them. Even though it's a shelter the animals always seem happy and are loved.

My husband and I adopted our newest dog from here a few months ago. We had seen pictures of her on Facebook multiple times and finally decided we had to go see her! We got there and everyone was so friendly and helpful the place looked clean. We fell in love with our pup and were able to start the process for adoption right away! We took her home same day. The next day she began to cough I thought it was just stress and being in a new environment but it progressively got worse! I caved and brought her to the vet to assure everything was okay. Found out she had kennel cough, $200 later I get her all the medicine/ shots she needed. A few days went by and my other dog began to cough worse than she did. Sure enough it was another $200 bill. I called the humane society to inform them of what was going on and the lady I had spoken to confirmed that another dog in the kennel had kennel cough but they didn't think my pup needed to be seen....so not only did they sell me a dog as healthy for $160 but I also had to fork out another $400 in vet bills....I would've appreciated a little heads up of what was going on and that there would have been a possibility of this. So why 3 stars you ask....I would've given less but this is a No Kill shelter and I whole heartedly love that. I just wish there was more honesty.

Lisa the cat lady, is certainly a very thoughtful member of their team, I enjoy visiting the dogs and cats when I can! The front office staff could be nicer, I feel like volunteers should not interfere in placement of older animals because there are many great families in Sawyer County and no reason to be so over populated!Young lady and the older lady, please show people kindness and be professional. It's not pleasant to step in the door and meet with judgemental people?

Two of my dogs came from the Northwoods Humane Societies in Hayward, Wisconsin. The best dogs ever! It's a beautiful facility with amazing people who care deeply for the welfare of the animals. So many wonderful staff members and volunteers working tirelessly to protect and find furever homes for these needy animals.. I hope to find another beautiful dog there soon. Thank you NHS for all the amazing work...and for your 'top ten best' status in Wisconsin's animal rescue and shelters.

My wife and I stopped in while we were at my parents house for christmas. My wife wanted a fur baby, so we came to look at cats. We ended up leaving that day with a three legged pitty named Smokie. He is the best dog that I have ever met. They take good care of the animals here and genuinely care about the animals and finding them good homes. Come check this place out. The animals need us!

My Grandmother was recently widowed. She and my Grandfather had their sweet dog Freeway for 14 years. He was the love of their life. Freeway passed first, then Grandpa. Grandma wasn't ready for a dog until she saw 2 dogs on Northwoods Humane Society's Facebook. 1 had already been adopted when she filled out her application. The other she came to meet this past Saturday. Billy the kid looked very similar to her beloved Freeway and she fell in love. She wanted to take him home that day, but the shelter people told her and my aunt/uncle that Billy the kid was getting neutered and would be available first thing Thursday morning. They asked of they could get him early, but were told that adoption would be first come first serve as of 11am Thursday morning. Today is Wednesday. My Grandmother has all of her supplies for him, prepared to arrive before the shelter opens to ensure she is able to be the first to pick him up tomorrow morning. Today, I noticed the dogs the shelter posted on this Facebook, Billy the kid wasn't pictured. I messaged them to inquire. They informed me that Billy was neutered and adopted early. Unbelievable. My Grandmother is crushed. This is not how a shelter should operate. Dogs shouldn't be adopted like candy in a candy store "first come first serve." Incredibly disappointing "adoption process." Both the dogs and the potential families deserve better than that.

We drove 60 miles on 2/26/17 to look at dogs. We found one we liked. We asked about it and was told it would be available on 3/2/17. We were told it was 1st come 1st served. So on 3/1/17 we found out the dog was adopted out already.
