We adopted a 9 year old English Setter from an out of town animal shelter. We brought Rhemi home only to realize she had breast cancer and was probably the reason she was brought to the shelter in the first place. We had a consult with the veterinarian recommended by the shelter and they told us to just 'bring her home and give her a good-end-of-life'. We were very disappointed and brought her to Dr. Eric Haukaas. He performed surgery, removed 2 malignant breast tumors, and Rhemi has been great ever since! That was 3 1/2 years ago...

Bay Area Animal Hospital is a top quality vet in the Ashland/U.P. of Michigan area. Well worth the 35 minute drive from MI. for the service. I highly recommend Dr. Erik Haukaas and his staff. They take great care of our Devon Rex cats. Our kittens are well taken care of there and our oldest cat(16 years old) has been receiving top quality senior care. From kittens to seniors, they are the best.

I've always had a great experience with Dr. Haukus at BAAH. I like the way he explains any problems my dogs are having and his practical approach to veterinary care.

Bay Area Animal Hospiyal and Pet Resort and Boarding is the best place to bring your pet. What I like most about hospital is that when uoi bring in your pet to be seen, your loving pet is seen by the veternarian, not a techncian. The Doctor talks with you and answers all my questions. Other places I have taken my dog, I never see the vet. When I ask if the vet could call me with questions, I have, rarely do you hear back from the vet. Everyone is so kind.I use day boarding frequently. The staff is so nice, caring, and it shows by all of them, they love their work and love animals. The hospital and day spa are so clean and I know in my heart, my dog is getting the BEST care. They are all so professional . Thank you to ALL of you.

Took my cat here for a checkup and the facility is very nice. We did not have to wait more than a few minutes to see the doctor and he was very knowledgeable. Staff very nice and clean rooms and lobby.

We had an emergency with our dog Ty. My usual vet was out on a call and couldn't see us that day. I called Bay Area Animal Hospital and they were able to see us within an hour. The Doctor took one look and could see Ty was having an allergic reaction. He checked him over, gave him a shot and within an hour Ty was back to his old self. What a relief that was.So grateful that they could get us in right away and cure his issue. And the staff was very kind and courteous too.

I would highly recommend Dr. Eric and his staff to anyone who is looking for a vet to take their pet to. I recently had our Balto there for shots and an exam and the service and exam that Dr. Eric did was just WOW. They are the best that I have taken a pet to. He is very caring and I trust him which is very important when it comes to the care of a family member. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Bay Area Animal Hospital.

We had a puppy emergency during a snowstorm. Dr. Hakkaus took us in immediately. We are very happy with the care Owen received!

Why do you people insist on employing AND DEFENDING a known animal abuser? Erik Haukaas is a widely known abuser. He picks and chooses the animals he will deliver acceptable treatment to. If your animal isn’t one that he favors, HE WILL HURT IT. Just as recently as 1/31/23 there are facebook campaigns in local groups discussing the level of abuse he commits. He is currently being protested for throwing a kitten against a wall DURING A CHECK UP AT BAY AREA VETERINARIAN HOSPITAL. DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS HERE IF YOU LOVE THEM!

Love this place! They are very good to my pet--taking the time to answer all our questions and providing timely care whenever we need it. Dr. Haukaas is patient and kind with our aging pet and always has practical approaches and ideas to help.

This vet is an absolute jag off. Rude, verbally abusive, condescending, I could go on and on. If you have a pet that is anything less than perfect, I would suggest going elsewhere.

Absolutely terrible. Abusive beyond belief. I left in tears. If I could give zero stars I would. Treated my dog and I like monsters. I paid him so I could leave. My dog was scared of him, he sat on her then blamed her for being aggressive. We will never be going back. Would not recommend unless you like to be abused and talked down to. Love that the staff just hear it happen too. Disgusting. He needs to be shut down. My dog was terrified the rest of the day after the appointment.

In July 2023 my 9 yr old mini schnauzer had a dental emergency. BAAH office was very clean, organized and spacious. Office staff were very proficient and kind. Dr. Haukaas was caring as he tenderly examined our dog. Treatment required next-day surgery, an antibiotic, and pain meds. Very professionally rendered. Only vet in town that would provide dental doggie service. Even the Duluth emergency vet clinic we were originally referred to did not have dental equipment! Well done, Dr. Haukaas and staff!

Had to euthanize our dear family dog today. Dr Haukaas and staff treated old Bandit and his humans with gentleness, respect and kindness. We highly recommend this clinic.

The staff was wonderful with our pup. The Dr gave some good advice on our breed. He doesn't have the best "bedside" manner and can come off as gruff but he's very knowledgeable.

Called for an emergency visit because our dog wasn’t doing well. The guy, I’m assuming the vet, told me he had no staff which I completely understood. But he asked what was going on. I explained to him what I thought was going on with our dog and then he asked if he’s ever seen the dog. I told him he hadn’t. His response was “Well he definitely needs to be seen but we won’t get him in.” I then proceeded to ask if he knew of anyone in the area who would be able to help us or even in Superior. He told me to just call around. I can’t imagine how he is in person if he was that rude on the phone. Clearly he doesn’t have any sympathy or empathy. If you can’t help you would think he could point someone in the right direction. Thankfully a vet on main street went out of her way to help us and clearly cared. Would NEVER recommend this place and after talking with others from around the area they feel the same way. Got his new building and now all he cares about is his money.

Thank you Bay Area staff! My puppy became unexpectedly ill and I left messages at 6 other vet clinics and none of them were willing to see us because we would be new clients. That was not the case here. Not only were we able to get in, even though the doctor was technically booked, this clinic had the lowest emergency visit fee out of any of the other animal hospitals I called. The facility was very clean and the staff was super friendly and helpful, and obviously really cared.

I have been with BAAH for about 12 years now. I bring my three dogs here. Before that, my family has seen Dr H with our family dog that we got when I was 8 years old. A few years ago I moved from Ashland to Superior. I still vet my dogs with Dr H. I drive over on Saturdays, mostly, to see him when my dogs need anything. There is a reason I do this. He has always been honest and to the point with me about my pets. He actually cares. Gives his personal and professional opinions. One of my dogs had recently been in liver failure and I prepared myself mentally to say goodbye to him at the age of eight. But Dr H didn’t give up. I made numerous trips from Superior to Ashland to have him be seen, monitored, and cared for by Dr. H. He is currently on zero medications and doing AMAZING. He’s here today because of BAAH and the amazing staff and one amazing vet. I don’t plan to change vets until Dr H is no longer practicing. Thank you, BAAH and Erik Haukaas for all that you have done and continue to do.

As new dog owners, Bay Area Animal Hospital has always helped us feel confident in the care our puppy is receiving. We are completely comfortable with every interaction we have with each staff member in this establishment. We know they ALL care about our pet whom we consider a family member. Dr. Haukass takes time to address our concerns and answer our questions in a professional and respectful manner. We are so pleased with the care our Loki have received at this facility.

Last Thursday I brought my Lab Charlotte to Bay Area Animal Hospital for the first time, she was getting spayed. They made us feel so welcome and were so good with Charlotte. Charlotte tends to be really shy and skittish and they were very patient with her. I appreciated that they let me stay and be with her while they gave her the first shot to make her sleepy. She was able to fall asleep in my lap before the start of her procedure. They took excellent care of my Charlotte and I greatly appreciate that. I plan on having Bay Area take care of Charlotte and my other Lab Joy from now on!

We had our dog spade on a Thursday and at some point the following Sunday, our hyper pup had her incision burst open and her bowels were hanging out. The doc and staff were waiting at the door for us and had her back in surgery in under five minutes! Amazing, kind, and responsive! Great customer service and we will take our animals there forever!Thank you for loving our babies like we do!

We brought our cat here for a very large hematoma on his ear. Not only were we able to get in very quickly for an examination, his surgery was scheduled for the very next day. The staff are very helpful, kind, and professional, and our cat likes them too.

The vets here are excellent, the facility is clean and the staff is kind and they had a same day apt available! When I visited the vet took time to explain my cats illness, outline a care approach that was practical, taught me to administer meds, and discussed next steps.I would recommed this facility hands down!

For over $100 we were told our 18 month old dog has sore hips pretty much just by looking at her. Treatment is that she needs to relax (no playing, running, stairs or anything of that sort). We were also given pain medication to give her twice daily. So a few days pass and we can not get her to settle down for nothing. Call back and express our concerns just to be told that we need to treat this like a sprained ankle, in the same sentence was also told to take her for not 1 but 2 long walks everyday. Umm what? Mind you our dog is not walker friendly, we canceled her training because this vet told us to not have her up doing things....NOT recommended from me. If this place works for you and your pet thats great but we will never return!

Visiting Ashland from Kansas. On a walk our 6 lb dog, was bitten by something. Left a nasty bite mark on the inside of the leg. We called another vet and was told that it was surgery day and they wouldn’t have time to see our pet. Called Bay Area, and the Doctor himself took our call, and scheduled us an appointment a few hours after our call. During our visit the staff was very professional. The Doctor performed a thorough exam, then recommended a anti-biotic paste as well as a spray to help with bugs/insects. My wife and I were VERY impressed with the professionalism as well as the quality of care we received. Excellent facility, great location.

Dr Haukaas is fabulous - gentle and knowledgeable and my dog & cat both love him. I know if I call for something serious they’ll fit me in (I called Saturday morning cosy dog had been puking for 24 hours - they fit me in same day!) and I can always trust the front desk, nursing staff and Dr Haukaas to be professional and friendly.

I am not from the area but brought my dog in for a chipped tooth. Everyone there was so friendly and helpful. She didnt need a tooth extraction after all. I got her annual shots while there and it cost about 1/4 of what I normally pay in another state. They were honest and could have easily recommend unnecessary services, but did not. Such a great place. I highly recommend.

Bay area animal hospital really came thru in helping my little buddy, Damian, our black cat. The staff got the appointment for Damian, expeditiously. After we dropped him off, filled out some forms, and Damian was checked over thoroughly. I received a call from the attending doctor, explaining in clear terms, and recommendations. I gave the approval, and after a few hours, we were informed that Damians dental procedure was completed and he's in recovery, doing well. Before we could take custody of him, the doctor wanted to brief us, explaining what was done, and explained after care for him when we get him home. Damian is doing very good, appetite is good, not sleeping as much. He's back to being him. Thank you Bat Area animal hospital, for all you've done. The staff treated us with respect, dignity, and compassion. Thank you all, very much, Bay Area animal hospital

Since my post is long, let me make my statement clear - I highly recommend Bay Area Animal Hospital for your pets care, no matter how far you have to drive!Due to the state of things in 2020, most vet offices have been utilizing curbside services for seeing their patients. When it comes to pets, your patient is equally their human counterpart. It’s the human that sees the concern, contacts the vet, sets the appointment, receives professional information on the pets condition, asks questions for understanding, receives instructions for care, administers that care, makes the follow up appointments, and lastly, pays the bill. So if a vet refuses to see the human, how can the human have confidence in the instructions for care, prescribed treatment, and evaluating services rendered, then justify the expense and continued patronage? Well, they can’t.My 7 year old dog has suffered with an antibiotic resistant pseudomonas ear infection for almost all of 2020. I can tell you that I had about 4-5 curbside appointments with my local vet. Yes, the vet called me and talked to me on the phone while she was examining my dog, but i didn’t have the opportunity to ask questions that typically come to mind when you’re in the room, focused primarily on your pet and treatment. I was given antibiotics and an ear wash. No instructions. In a follow up appointment I asked if I was ‘doing it right.’ It was at that time the vet did inform me that the ear anatomy of a dog is different from human ears and verbally explained how I should be doing it. My dog, mind you, was in so much pain that a whisper in her ear would make her yelp! Ultimately, I turned to YouTube. It was only slightly more insightful. Third time, when the infection was still present, they ran a culture. It came back abx-resistant and so, they gave me another antibiotic and had me keep cleaning her ears. Upon my 4th visit, with no relief, they stated I’d have to take her to a pet dermatologist because allergies likely caused the infection to begin with.It was a ridiculous, expensive, dragging out of incompetent care because the local vet couldn’t make changes to their practice to be able to see their ‘whole’ patient. I live in Green Bay. I’m surrounded by vets. Not even the emergency vet office will see the humans! This prompted me to start looking rurally. I made the 4 1/2 hour drive to Ashland to the Bay Area Animal Hospital to get this infection taken care of since the doctor here seems to understand the importance of seeing his ‘whole’ patient. I can tell you I was shocked when he showed me exactly how to clean Mila’s ears! I would’ve been too afraid to do it correctly if I hadn’t seen it done. YouTube videos only showed cleaning the ears of dogs without infection. The in-person experience made a 100% difference! And what about protecting himself, staff and human-patients? Well, this office simply made adjustments that would enable them to maintain the quality of care their patients deserve, while implementing safety protocols. It can be done!Round trip, I spent 10 hours in the car. But it was worth it! Since that first day my dogs ears have been clean and she has been pain-free! Of course, the vet did care about her pain from the outset and addressed that from the start! My local vet, not once, offered anything for pain. On top of that, this vet showed much greater knowledge in attacking pseudomonas both topically and systemically.Pet owners know that whatever needs to be done to receive excellent care for their pet is worth it’s weight in gold. I absolutely recommend this animal clinic if you want quality care for your pet!
