Excellent choice of a place to go for the day. The trail heads are well marked and you can tell lots of effort was put into curating the park. The views are excellent, and nothing you will see anywhere else.Dog-friendliness: Dog friendly, good exercise and enjoyable for the dogs.

Great getaway. Stayed for 2 nights in cabin 7. Plenty of space with 4 bedrooms. The dining table set for 8-9. Clean and comfortable. Peaceful and quiet.Playground: Multiple small playgrounds throughout the park. Perfect for young kids and there were some close to all cabins.Restrooms: The buildings are a little older but clean and warm in cold day.

All cabins have the necessary amenities, including cookware, extra blankets, and Wi-Fi (if you must be on the web in this environment!). The small rustic cabin I stayed in was super clean and very comfortable. I was loaded with firewood (you can buy extra if you need more than the free allotment) and completely prepared for the rain and snow during my stay. It was a wonderful, quiet, restful experience. Bring all the groceries you need - the closest grocery store is about 30 minutes away (although there is a quick stop within a mile or two of the park).

Beautiful park, best cabin we have stayed at in any of the lower 48. Stay here if you can get a booking, really worth every penny.

Intense hike starting from the Howards lick trail head, up a service road, then to the White oak trail. There were some cut throughs (steep) instead of taking the switchbacks. The views were well worth it and a fun little picture opportunity!

One of the best state parks I have visited. There are plenty of picnic area tables on lush green carpet like grass and it has cabins too. There are lots of trails to do, but the best is Cranny Crow Outlook trail. The park restroom needs upliftment and park service should create designated parking lot for White Oaks trail (Cranny crow).

A beautiful park! Friendly and informative personnel! We hiked to the Cranny Crow Overlook...it was strenuous and longer than expected, but the view at the top was worth it! Wow! Would love to go back and explore more.

Fantastic place! We come here every year and every year is just as amazing as before. My grandmother grew up here and worked in the restaurant or something like that here, so this place has always been somewhere we loved and cherished and visited. It's so beautiful and peaceful. The cabins are fantastic! There are quite a few to rent here. There is a pool, basketball, volleyball, an obstacle course/fitness trail, disc golf, all kinds of hiking trails, tennis, and so much more. It's not really near a grocery store or anything (about 30 minutes away), no cell service - which I actually don't mind - but wifi in the cabins. There is also horse riding nearby.

Everything was fantastic! The cabin we stayed in was really nice and well equipped. The mattress in there was so comfortable we had to look who made it. The trails were well maintained and all the staff were very helpful and nice. There are some fantastic local businesses near by including The Butcher Block that is completely worth the trip. I don't know if all West Virginia state parks are this great or just this one but I'll find out soon. 11 out of 10

Great place to have a picnic (lots of tables) with your family or spend a few hours outdoors hiking. Play on the baseball field, slide, swings or teeter totter. Flush toilets. Simple and well maintained.

Adorable cabin stay and nice trails. Mostly easy to moderate, but all of them have good overlooks.

Absolutely gorgeous mountains, hiking trails, and fall foliage! Keep in mind that all those mountains are great barriers for signals... but the visitor center does have accessible WiFi that works even from the parking lot and part of the grassy area out in front!

Beautiful park cranny crow is a beautiful overlook but don't stop there the primitive outpost cabin is super cozy up away from it all and going all the way to the end of big ridge to complete the mountain is a must with great views there.

I was heading to Swallow Falls and decided to stop here instead since it's a short drive. When I arrived, I already lost cell reception awhile back around the time I entered WV. Google maps was still working to take me here.. fortunately, I paid attention while driving here that I managed to figure my way back to VA.This park is really designed for campers and those staying in cabins. This would give them plenty of time to explore the park. I was hoping to get to the overlook but it wasn't clear in how to get there. I found the pool, fitness trail, house museum area and sulfur springs. According to Google Maps, the overlook is to the right away from the cabins, but I drove around and saw 2 paths that looked like they might be for both cars and possibly hiking? I wish the trailheads were better marked for those visiting for the first time. I guess I need to study the park more before returning, but I don't think I will return. Long drive. There a very sweet park dog running loose around the park. She walked with us for awhile until we were getting into the car. One if my dogs is a bit feisty and the park dog was very sweet and submissive. No worry about dog fights.

Beautiful place to get away. Cabins are clean and the pool feels amazing. Playgrounds for kids and plenty of trails to hike. Lee cabin is open to tour for free. My family has a picnic every year for Father's day and I always look forward to go whither it's just for the day or weekend.

We geocached hiked and rode horses on October 23 it was an amazing place. The road from Morefield had amazing views. The park itself was in it's full glory of leaves changing. The ladies and I loved the hike to the overlooks and the horse back riding. We enjoyed the fire tower and the sulphur spring. Got to see a lot of the park. Be sure to check out the stables an hour ride is only $26. AMAZING ! I am working on visiting all the WV state parks and in ove half way done. Definitely worth the trip out. I'd call ahead about the horse back riding it will be worth it! I'll be back to home and visit this state park.

Lost River is a lovely retreat even for a short weekend stay.We were housed in Cabin #20 that has a nicely open deck toward the acceas road.We had time to loop 2 trails back to the cabin. The short one Loblolly trail (took one hour) and the next day we walked the Razor Ridge trail ( a 3 hour walk).Lots of green in the forest, bloiming flowers on the forest bed and the trees. All in all it was a wonderful stay.

We wanted a relaxing, but, adventurous vacation to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. It far exceeded any & all expectations! From the cabin to the pool, the staff, the trails, were ALL great! We were there July 11th-16th. Wasn't long enough & we didn't want to leave. A definite return visit. ALMOST HEAVEN...growing up was just a good song by John Denver. Now West Virginia is in our Soul, Especially, Lost River State Park ❤

A beautiful secluded park just outside of Mathias, WV, Lost River State Park is a dream for those craving peace and quiet. Quaint cabins dot the park along with recreation areas and hiking trails for multiple skill levels. As a nature lover, it’s one of my new favorites.

For the last 5 years, every summer coming here from DC. It is a good place to stay away from the crowd and reunite with nature.

What a hidden gem this park is! Every time we go there are not many people there. We love going on the Howard’s Lick Trail with our 5 year old. It’s an easy hike along the river and you can even walk up the river itself if you wear the right shoes. There’s a beautiful meadow area with picnic tables and a slide & swing set for kids. Alsoa covered pavilion area. 18 hole disc golf course there. Great looking pool, I hear the water stays chilly so it’s best on a hot day. We don’t have AT&T cell reception there, FYI. There are several great hikes of varying difficulty levels in this park. Also cabins to stay at and a stable for riding. We love spending the day exploring Lost River State Park!

No hot water in the cabin (and I have been waiting a hour and a half for someone to come and take a look at the hot water issue), floors were dirty, cobwebs under all the furniture, the kitchen was not fully stocked with essentials. Ex. there we no knives to cut anything with, only butter knives. Out of 25 state parks I've visited in WV, this is the only one I have been disappointed with.

HIDDEN GEM ALERT!One day when golfing in the city I got matched up with a kind man from Virginia who mentioned he had spent his last weekend here, and he loved it. I stumbled my way into the wv state parks website (which is beautifully built by the way) and found the last cabin available and booked it. When I arrived with a group of friends we were greeted by a kind lady (who had lots of jokes) that told us the best hikes and things to do in the park. We went for a long hike and got back to the main building to find a nice note with the keys to the cabin we booked. This is the cool part!I was expecting a small, terribly build cabin but this felt like a mansion in the woods. It even had WIFI! The rangers left wood for us to stay warm and the facilities were very clean. My friends and I spent the night by the fire outside enjoying conversation, laughter, and a good detox of technology (even though we had wifi). I could not have been happier with the experience. This is why they call it "Almost Heaven"!

Great park very remote, yet has great facilities. Unlike, Virginia State Parks there is no entrance fee to enter . Lost River has plenty of bathrooms , and cabins ,though the Park's facilities have a look of an 1980"s horror movie. Overall, great hidden gem , that's only 2 hours from the DC .

It's a pretty place and also quiet. There are several trails, most popular is the Cranny Crow overlook and the gift shop employees are nice.Playground: A couple of areas.Restrooms: Clean bathhouses.Dog-friendliness: Pet potty area, just clean it up for everyone.Picnic area: Several picnic areas. Grills and picnic tables located throughout the park.
