I just adopted a sweet little girl (ChiChi)..Scarlet from Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County. The manager Tammy and her staff were great at explaining the process. We did a meet and greet with my other dog Tucker and he just loves his new sister. Her shots were complete, she was spayed already, and she has a chip. She even came home with a new blanket, a bag full of toys, treats, and her clothes. The price of the adoption fee was well worth it. It was a great experience and I highly recommend this facility as the place to get your new pet.

For over 70 years, this small, no-kill shelter w/ it's friendly & helpful staff has helped homeless dogs & cats find their furever homes. They also hold 2 low-cost rabies clinics a year & offer coupons to help defray the cost of spay/neuter for local residents.

Fantastic adoption experience! I set up an appointment to look at a few cats. When I got there I was lead into a nice clean cat room and was given lots of time to meet and sit with the cats. I bonded with a fur baby named Fairlawn and was able to take him home that day. The staff was very friendly and they even sent a little bag of goodies and a homemade blanket home with us for Fairlawn. The animals all looked well fed and taken care of and all medical records were up to date. If I am ever looking for another family member, I would definitely visit again :)

Great center! I adopted a wonderful cat last month. She has brought joy and smiles to my life when I needed it the most. I love that the animals are well kept, have ALL the 1st round of shots and is spayed/neutered! The whole staff is so nice and made the process easy. Thanks for helping me find my forever pal

We just adopted our beautiful baby Bailey from the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County. They really want to make sure the animals in their care go to the right homes. At the same time, there weren't 1,000 hoops to jump through, either. They are all well taken care of and cared for by people who really seem to love them. The price for adoption is extremely reasonable as well considering she is spayed, her shots are up to date, and she is already micro chipped!

I adopted my fur baby from here September 2021 and it was a great experience. You can tell the animals are very well taken care of and that the staff loves them all so much! Just now realizing I haven’t given a review but they definitely deserve 5 stars!

I have to say this is one worst experiences in my life. I brought my family to the shelter to add a new fur baby. We found a great addition to add for our family. My family was so excited when we found Nutmeg but we were unable to bring her home. The shelter's policy was the need to do a home visit and because we had another dog they need to meet granted so we set up an appointment for next Saturday. As Saturday arrived we bought our dog to the shelter to meet Nutmeg. It seems stranger that their first meeting was through a fence. Anyone who is a dog owner knows that dogs are a lot braver when something is between them. Nevertheless, the dogs never show any signs of aggression but dogs have to show a sign of dominance. The shelter staff members appeared not to have a lot of training. They keep insisting that Nutmeg was afraid of my much older and bigger dog. That they were not a good match. Granted after a week of waiting my family was pretty sad we were unable to bring Nutmeg home with us. So my family decided to drive hour away to Loudoun County animal shelter where we got our first dog from. Staff was very knowledgeable about their animals, they had history on the dogs. Our dog miles meet two other dogs in a field with the shelter staff in Loudoun County. They help us find the perfect match for Miles and we were so happy to bring Milo home the same day. I am not sure about. This shelter their purpose should be to find homes for these dogs. I been following a lot the shelters website for months and a lot these West Virginia shelters the animals have been there for a long time. Which is not good environment for dogs or any animal to be cage for long period of time. It makes it harder for them to go back in to being domesticated. Final thoughts avoid this place they get your hopes for nothing.Say hi to Miles and Milo

The animals are wonderful! Sweet and loving and they get well taken care of. I am not a fan of the application process as I applied for a puppy and they lead me on for about 2 weeks telling me I was in the top two choices and then ended up choosing another family for the puppy. While I am happy the pooch was homed to the best fit , I don't appreciate being strung along making a bond with an animal for two weeks when they clearly had their minds made. Overall wonderful place for animals but I had a poor experience with applications.

My boyfriend and son filled out the application to adopt a beautiful little kitty last Friday. We got a call yesterday that the application was approved and that we could pick her up tomorrow. We were so excited since we'd been waiting almost a week. Today we received a call saying that after looking at our application again and seeing that we'd allow the cat to go outside that our application has now been denied. When my boyfriend asked why that would prevent the adoption, all he was told is that it is against their policy. We live on a farm and would allow the kitty to go outside if she wanted to. We already have another kitten who is getting so much love. He sleeps in bed with our son every night. We wanted him to have another buddy to play with. Now, because we would have allowed the kitten from AWSJ to go outside occasionally, the kitten will sit in the shelter longer, instead of going to a loving home. Obviously this shelter does not have the best interest of the animals in mind.

They are a great group that take really good care of the animals until they reach their forever homes. I have adopted some cats from here and HIGHLY RECOMMEND this shelter.

THIS SHELTER HAS RINGWORM.. Do NOT adopt from here. We adopted a kitten from here. He came home with goopy eyes and sneezing. He also had what appeared to be a scab on his shoulder. We thought nothing of it. He was to be "fostered" until he is neutered. His sneezing got worse and his eyes got to where he couldn't open them in the morning. The weird scab was growing and a bald spot started over his eye. I called AWS and left a message for help. No one called me back. No vet within an hour has an open appointment within 3 weeks. We waited and asked the vet to look at him when we dropped him off to be neutered. Turns out he had a MAJOR, active ringworm infection. Ringworm is a fungal infection that is incredibly contagious and hard to get rid of. They sent us home with medicine for his worsening respiratory infection, double eye infection, and ringworm. For weeks I had to treat him twice daily for all those things. I had to get a refill of medication for ringworm and get medicated shampoo. The vet agreed that the shelter was to be billed since they gave a kitten with ringworm to someone, which they stated should never have happened. I told AWS, per the vet that he couldn't be neutered until he was healthier and didn't have such an active case of ringworm. They said absolutely nothing about it. They said ok and asked of he had a rescheduled appointment to be neutered. I confirmed that he did not per vet instructions. AWS also told me that he is no longer contagious 2 days after applying medicine. Seeing as how they claimed he didn't get ringworm at the shelter,, I called the vet for confirmation. It wasn't true. He was contagious until the ringworm was gone. The shelter said no cats had ringworm there and told me the kitten had gotten it from us somehow, which is ridiculous. The vet told me that kittens are natural carriers of it. I explained that I was concerned because the kitten was in a room with 30 other cats of all ages. He wasn't fully vaccinated and the antibiotics were being shared with other cats and put in their food. Despite having an obvious respiratory infection he was not quarantined.the week of October 6 I needed to bring him to the vet to get a refill of ringworm meds. The day before I called the vet and asked if they could just look at pictures and see if it was improved so I didn't have to bring him in. The vet said she wanted to see him, so I brought him in. I thought the ringworm was mostly cleared up and was excited to have him out of quarantine. It wasn't completely gone but only a small spot remained. PLEASE NOTE THAT I SPOKE WITH TAMMY AT AWS AND UPDATED HER ON ALL OF THIS THE DAY BEFORE THE LAST VET APPOINTMENT (Oct 5) Tuesday. Oct 12 Tammy again called, with Maria listening in. She said I needed to bring him to the shelter so they can quarantine and treat him until Nov 3 when he is due to be neutered. Admittedly I was busy and frustrated so I hung up on Tammy. When I called the following day they didn't bother calling back. I finally heard from Tammy again today and they said that because he had to go to the vet he needed to be returned. I expressed deep concerns about their care and questioned why he was ignored for over 6 weeks with ringworm and now that they had to pay for a vet appointment they want him back. She said that because I was rude and hung up on her that they wanted him back. She specifically stated that had I not "gotten an attitude" they wouldn't take him back. I am concerned that his ringworm will only get worse when in a facility with that many animals. There is no way to provide him better care in a small cage than he gets here. He has an entire empty room that is his at the moment. Tammy also lied and said that I was told weeks ago to bring him back which is completely false. AWS was fully aware of the progress of all of this and never once before Oct

On November 6th 2021 we donated over $200 of cat and dog food to the shelter. We were told to put it on the porch. I ask for help unloading the food and she came out and put it on the porch. My husband and I unloaded the truck. We received no THANK YOU or WE APPRECIATE YOUR DONATION. Employee needs more training. Poor attitude.

They care. They love animals. They want only the best for you and your furry loved ones. No kill shelters such as this one deserve our support. It is well-managed and numerous volunteers take care of everything. Bravo!

This was a TERRIBLE experience. I drove 7 hours to look at a dog at the shelter. When I talked to someone on Tuesday they told me since I was coming so far I could take him home with me. After I got there and met Gunny they proceeded to tell me that I could not take him until he was fixed. So basically I wasted time and money to go look at a dog I could not get.

Bill and the entire staff are excellent people. When you walk in the shelter it's almost like you walked into a home environment not a shelter. Very loving and clean..

Tried to go there when there was a little bit of rain, post arrival workers put a sign up saying “closed due to weather,” they then exit the building, we ask to see a dog that we were going to adopt, that we had driven quite a ways to adopt, workers then proceeded, while they were still there, to say “oh yeah, we closed due to weather and stuff” after blankly staring after we told them we had messaged them and told them we’d driven awhile to adopt the dog, we took off, all in all pure laziness and and no worth ethic, also no chance at adoption after my experience.
