There is no room at the inn. Walked a stray dog my ex-wife had mistakenly thought she was able to care for properly to the facility on Dry Flats Road from Woodlawn Ave only to find out they were at maximum capacity. Maybe they should publicize that fact on their Google search results so people don't waste their time. Maybe there should be a time limit on how long a dog is able to be housed there before being euthanized. While they spend time "categorizing" the various temperaments of the dogs living there, which may or may not assist in finding them homes, they might want to focus on getting rid of the ones whose possibility of "homing" properly is almost nil. The stray dog I brought to them would probably be one of them because he is an Alpha male dependent human biting devil dog. If I had a big yard with a privacy fence & a good shock collar setup, I wouldn't get rid of him. But I don't, and neither do I care to care for his fate beyond basic feeding & watering. It's a dog, not a child, and since my time in Korea back in the mid 1980's, my personal view of pets is that they are nothing more than furry domesticated chickens. Read that and weep. As you wish. Humans FTW.

TLDR: neglectful workers. Thoroughly check pets up for adoption and ask tons of questions. My kitten was too young to be adopted and was sick. They got his age wrong and lied about issues with him.Very conflicted with this review. I don’t want to say bad things about a shelter but it needs to be said. Check your animals for fleas before you bring them home, make sure they’ve been de wormed and have all they need to be adopted. My kitten was very sick when I brought him home. He was infested with fleas and worms and we couldn’t bond with him like we should because we had to seclude him from our other cat and clean up messes. The workers won’t take accountability and do very little to get cats adopted out. A lot of cats have been there for months and years. Several cats had eye infections and the tiny room they’re in reeks. Litter boxes are barely scooped and there are messes all on the floor. The workers there are not very helpful. It’s just all around a mess. There could be so much potential in that place if people cared.

I found a very beautiful new friend. Her name is Minnie May. She is a 1 1/2 year old cat. She is a total "LOVE BUG". Please go there and give love to one of the other beautiful cats, or dogs they have there. A forever home is what they need. Here is a picture of Minnie May.

Between not taking animals (I had no choice but to "release" kittens back outside only to have someone intentionally poison them!) and refusing to even post found pets on their Facebook page (a stray dog showed up this Spring and a cat was likely dumped a few weeks ago, but i was trying to find his family on the off chance he was lost - neither were posted) this is the least helpful "shelter" I have ever dealt with!I donate to Loved At Last Cat Community and Operation Underdog when I can. These are much more humane organizations!!

It was awful, my boyfriend had found some kittens on the side of the road, so he took them there and they refused to take them, they told him to take them back were he found them and dump them. This is a humane society? They need to be shut down. Don't donate to them. Find a local rescue to donate to, not these people. Just awful

I WAS TOLD THEY CAN'T TAKE CATS NOW? I GOOGLED ANIMAL SHELTERS AND THE LAWFUL SITUATION IS: THEY'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO DENY ANIMALS AT SHELTERS. So is it true you will not except kittens, cats etc. I'm sure donations will drop once reported. So tell me have you stopped? Perhaps WVVA should investigate a lot of SHELTERS, basically start visiting unexpected. But answers need given'.Appreciate it.

It's be better if they'd actually let you see their dogs. I don't know many people that want to choose a dog solely based on appearance. They have you select a dog from a computer screen before you can see it. It's just sad. I feel like more adoptions would happen if you could see the dogs.

I didn’t believe the rumors about this being the worst place to try to adopt animals. I was trying to adopt a dog (Evelyn) that has a huge unexplained scratch down her back with no explanations as to how she got them. Well after putting in an application to adopt her, I was told to call back in 2 days, and they never picked up the phone. On the 3rd day, I tried again, but the lady was super rude and said if I haven’t gotten an email then it’s because they haven’t reviewed my application yet (well duh!! That’s why I was calling!!) but I just politely said ok. The 4th day I called back and they said they’d call me back the next day because they have other applicants, well obviously they’re not even trying very hard to give this dog a home they’re being lazy and quite possibly shady. Finally, on the last day, they still hadn’t called me back so I called them 2 hours before closing. They told me to be patient that sometimes it takes awhile. I said “that’s crazy but ok” and the lady on the phone said “yeah umm now you’ll never get her!” So I just hung up before I said something rude back. Their website isn’t even set up right, if you filter it to show dogs who are dog friendly, it only shows one dog and the description for it says not dog friendly. Over all this facility is lazy AND shady.

The animals are well taken care of, but the employees are more animal-friendly than people-social. Not that I blame them! This is the most difficult place to visit, I want to give every animal a home. Please don't forget those that have been there the longest, the adults and seniors. Everyone wants a puppy, but everyone of them has love to give. Please adopt.

This a beautiful place with beautiful hearts.,..I just wish ppl understood that having a no kill shelter inevitably leads to overpopulation and the cats that are out there struggling don't get the proper care they need so it is more humane to put them to sleep sadly... There are so many cats in my neighborhood I take care of as many as I possibly can and they still only get the bare minimum because of my financial situation.... Only want what's best and most humane for these animals I love them with everything in me.

Adopted a puppy, Was told to pick her up today. The Humane Society forgot and fed my puppy. So she did not get to go get spayed. This is Monday, they are closed. They didn't have the decency to call us. So she is left in a cage still. When she could be in her loving home today. How irresponsible!!!

Awesome people working here! They are a clean facility (considering it's an animal shelter) and truly care for the animals and do EVERYTHING they can to help them and the community! Thanks for ALL of your hard work! *UPDATE* 6/11/22 the Humane Society received a grant that permitted them to do a rabies/vaccine clinic for low cost vaccines for your pets & also a voucher to cover getting your pet spayed or neutered (along with the rabies shot & pain meds)! This is to aid in trying to reduce the amount of strays around & animals in the shelter! This was a fantastic opportunity for the community, especially for those who may not have the extra money to cover these expenses for their pets! And again..just AMAZING folks working here!!

My daughters and I adopted 2 kitties (Hannah and Lane). We are very thankful for the staffs patience/ kindness while waiting to do paperwork. They were quite busy and my girls were quite grumpy. Thank you all so much for our new additions to our family. ♡♡ Much love for the job you do!

If strays and/or "drop-off" animals seem to be out-of-hand around your home, or even maybe your own "pets" have seemed to multiply more than you wanted, call the Humane Society. The girl was very helpful and pleasant on phone and when I went in the employees I had contact with were just as nice. No judgement or uncomfortableness. I'm very grateful they helped me and eases the "worry and stress" from my day to day.THANK YOU HUMANE SOCIETY

We have adopted several wonderful dogs over the years from the shelter. Went to the humane society shelter Saturday August 14th to look at a dog they had for adoption. Got there at about 1pm and found one of the 2 gates closed with a sign stating that the shelter would be closed until futher notice. Is this for real?

Most devoted staff and volunteers who truly love animals. If you want your donations to go to the real care of animals and really want to make a huge difference, please support the no kill shelter!!

I've adopted two animals from them in the past, and the only thing these folks lack or could use help with is they need more monetary support from the community and the ability to pay the people who care for and work with the animals a decent check. They are helpful caring and do a thankless sometimes emotionally traumatizing service that most of society overlook or only recognize when they are in need themselves.

Took in a sick abandoned kitten which is against protocol but I had nowhere else to turn. Thank God for the employee who came out to the car to get it. I swear that poor sickly kittie smiled at her and opened his infected eyes to look at his angel of mercy. Much gratitude to the beautiful dark haired employee!!

Got a cat from them with an immune disorder. He had a sore on his neck from a reaction to flea medicine they gave him. He was drooling the day we picked him up, they assured me this was a reaction to his flea medicine as well. It was not. We took him to our own vet a week later, and found that he had ulcers on his tongue. He will need lifelong care to treat his condition that includes shots every 6 weeks. They had the cat for months, I don't see how they couldn't have known about this.Nonetheless, I've kept the cat because I know returning him would be a death sentence for him. They are not a no-kill shelter. They don't kill "for space", but a chronic medical condition like his would be reason enough to euthanize.

I think it is very interesting that you can't even go in and see how the dogs act I have to look at a screen if I wanted to look at a screen I would've went to the app this is pathetic and dumb

This is more for the dog park than the shelter itself. I don’t recommend it to anyone because it isn’t really a dog park. It is a gravel trail behind the shelter and if you let your dogs off the leash they come out and tell you you can’t have them off because they’re walking the shelter dogs. Then they say it’s because the fence isn’t finished. Either way it’s a disappointment to the community, a real dog park is much needed in the area.

I had adopted a medium sized dog. His name by the shelter was buck I kept it that name. Later on Buck had been ran over by a car. But what i had learned from buck was that he had been respectful amazing at it heed obey. The animal shelter has the best dogs. And the most kind of people. Please if your looking for an animal go there!

This is an awesome shelter. Very caring staff and they take really good care of the animals. The only problem I had was I adopted from this shelter and had to wait almost a month to get my dog.
