Locally owned German restaurant in the heart of historic Portsmouth, Virginia.Between our group of three, we sampled the Knackwurst, Bauernwurst, Wienerwurst, Kartoffeln, Sauerkraut, and Spätzle. Everything was delicious. Authentic, traditional and very tasty. We also sampled some of their German bier on draft. They even met our request for a Cola-Weizen, which is half fountain Coke and half Hefeweizen. It’s quite good, and outside of Germany, I’ve never been able to get a restaurant to agree to make one for me.The waitstaff were very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere inside was warm and cozy with lots of decorative pieces to add to the German dining experience.Parking: Free parking is available on the street; however, on weekends it might be difficult to find a spot close by. We had to park about one block away, but it was not a problem as it was a nice evening and walk was very short.

We enjoyed our dinner here. This was highly recommended by our friends. My husband tried a couple of different sausages and got the cheese dipping sauce. Highly recommend the sauce! I got the Curryworst. The sauce was terrific with great flavor. The potatoes were great too. We sat in the covered patio and they allowed me to bring my small dog. They brought him out a water bowl too. Our waitress was very nice. The atmosphere is great. You can sit inside, outside, or in the covered patio area. We will bring our family when they come to town.

Food and service were amazing. We are visiting the area and attempted to try other restaurants nearby but no one would even seat us. The Bier Garden is a gorgeous restaurant with so much character. The food was perfectly cooked. I didn’t take a picture of my Turkey/Havarti sandwich in time before I indulged, but I did get pics of the strudel and pork appetizer with mushroom gravy. This place is a definite must try.

Sadly, this place is declining. The service is slow and my order is usually wrong. They always seem to be out of the beers and desserts we want. It would also be nice if at least one time the servers didn’t look at me crazy when I pronounce German words correctly. I hope the owners or managers are able to get this place back to being good.

We stopped here to eat while traveling from North Carolina to Pennsylvania. Apparently there was a concert going on in town, and the restaurant was expecting 100 people within the next 30 minutes of arrival. Even with that, they found us a small table. We did wait on our food a little but nothing unexpected or too bad. We enjoyed our food and beer. The dinner rolls and the potato salad were delicious. I would enjoy the spätzle more if it was a bit warmer. But again, we were grateful that they seated us. It is a true German spirit inside. Decorations were true to the culture. We would go back to enjoy the outdoor seating on a less crowded day.

Wow! I was very much in the mood for German food and these guys knocked it out of the park! The food was phenomenal. Not only did the menu have all the things I was looking for it had some surprising items that were also terrific. Good portions for the price and great atmosphere.Unsurprisingly, they were understaffed, everyone is right now. However, they were very upfront about it and handled it with incredible grace. I don't love the parking in this area but your mileage may vary. The quality, flavors and the fact that they clearly mark Gluten-Free items on the menu and online means we will be back.

Great, friendly service from start to finish! It was a nice, home-like atmosphere in which we enjoyed some delicious, authentic food! I've eaten at the restaurant several times. I moved and was back in town for business so I took my co-workers there. They really enjoyed their food! I recommend giving this place a try or going back for another visit!

Wonderful service and a great establishment. The decorations and setting of the inside and outside dining are lively but not over stimulating at the same time. The servers are all so nice and cheerful. They are all super quick to help in any way. The food is good. I got the KO Burger cooked medium rare. Without the bier cheese it would had little to no flavor unfortunately. The bier battered fries were delicious. I need no salt or ketchup to enjoy them. The schnitzel bites with gravy are a nice snack and taste good. The gravy is absolutely delicious. All around hood experience and food. Highly recommend eating here.Parking: The park available is all along the street downtown like most business. It’s nice a good area where not a lot of traffic flows through consistently how the available spots are limited.

This place was SO awesome. Authentic German cuisine was so exciting to our group of 6 (plus three kids), and they certainly delivered very well. Their Bier cheese is probably the best thing on the whole menu - wow it’s addicting! But there was not a bad thing there either; the spatzle and lesche were incredible, and the schnitzel and sausages were all on point. Everything was awesome. Our waitress was very helpful, and although the restaurant didn’t embody a pinnacle of professionalism, it was homey, welcoming, and comforting overall. I cannot wait to go back, and I will definitely be telling my friends all about it. The store/market in the back was also really fun to go through, they had such cool products and I had to grab a couple things - the employees there were also friendly and eager to help. Amazing experience!

I ate here several years ago and was glad to get back this weekend. As soon as I knew I was going to be in the Norfolk/Portsmouth area I knew I'd be eating at The Bier Garden. The food is authentic German and wonderful. The beer selection is enormous. The environment is perfection.Parking: The restaurant is located in a nice historic area of downtown Portsmouth. You have to find parking along the sides of the downtown streets but it wasn't too hard for us on a Saturday.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon in october. We had no trouble getting a table and were seated in Intimate area of the restaurant. Our food was delicious. Be sure to check out the pretzel charcuterie board. There is a nice selection of German Meats and cheeses and the pretzel is a work of art. My roast beef dinner was sumptuous and the ladies both enjoyed their schnitzel. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Hampton roads. We will certainly be back.

This is a must do if you are in the Portsmouth/Norfolk/ Hampton Roads area. It is authentic German food served with southern charm. I have found that a lot of Americans have not had real German food and this is the place to try it.I recommend the Schnitzel (fried chicken or pork) and trying the German potato salad (more vinegar and less mayo then American potato salad). The menu explains the food but the waitstaff does an even better job of explaining it.Plus they have beers and brews from all over the world. I promise you will find something you will enjoy here.

First time eating there with a friend waiter was very nice. Inside was a little bit cold for me. the food was good I really like the pork skin with the sauce that was probably my favorite I put the sauce on everything . Few complaints I have was the German potatoes we're very plain and a little extra burnt, and the schnitzel sandwich really didn't have a flavor my friend gotten the burger which he said was the best burger he had in a very long time.

Sunday lunchtime, arrived at noon. Immediately sat and then left alone for 20 minutes. Ordered drinks and food as soon as server finally came to table. Ordered sausage plate, fried flounder and pretzel to start. 40 minutes later and after asking twice…. Finally got pretzel. Server apologized and said she was ringing our order “as manager” so we would get “the best service” So after more than an hour of waiting asked about our meals. Another 15 minutes and finally got meals. As everyone else has mentioned…. Spaetzle COLD. Asked for replacement and it was cold too. No special service or discount even though we were there over two hours and were told we were getting “best service “ because of earlier delays. Get it together BG…. $103 bill and never again.

Had a beer flight and 2 appetizers. Best selection of beer! Place is super cute. Service was a little slow, but in the bartenders defense, she was pouring drinks for service too. Ordered the pork rinds with beer cheese, fantastic!! Ordered the appetizer schnitzel bites. They were tiny little pieces, almost burnt with a strange gelatinous mushroom sauce. Over-all good experience and I would go back to try something else to eat.

Disappointing.Rare to find a German brew house around here but something was wrong at this place. Food took about an hour to come out despite only approximately half occupancy. Schnitzel over fried and not thin like it’s supposed to be. Missing an order of fries that server told us she’d get her “throat slit” by kitchen staff if she asked for fries so she gave us a discount off the check instead. Clearly a problem if a server can’t get an order of fries! Maybe try again if they can get their act together.

We had dinner at The Bier Garden in honor of Volksfest (aka Oktoberfest) in Germany. I made a reservation for 8 and we had one more sow unexpectedly. When I arrived early to make sure we could get seated I was given a few options. The first option was outside in what looked to be a store room with some folding chairs and some outdoor chairs. This was not suitable, especially for the larger gentlemen apart of our group. I was then seated inside another area and was told we’d have the two larger tables and another side table we could move if needed. Sadly this wasn’t the truth because they then sat another family on the other table my group was supposed to get. We ended up having 9 people scrunched together on one table meant for maybe 6 people. As for the food, it was okay. The large pretzel didn’t have any salt or butter on it. I ordered the sausage platter (not really a platter) with German potato salad and sauerkraut. My one bockwurst (was supposed to have two) was okay, but was hard to eat without flatware. Finally we just got up to get our own since I server was too busy (seemed very overwhelmed). Finally I ordered dessert, only to find all the cakes I’d wanted to order were not available. The cake I did settle for, the chocolate praline, was not very good, definitely store bought.Parking: Parking was on the street and very hard to find good spots.
