Last May, 2023, I adopted a little girl whose shelter name was Cami. Her name now is Lilly. Shes a big girl now though. What a great asset to me and my older hound, Max's, life. She's a gem! She goes for park walks, rides in the car, she goes camping! And she has brought mine and Max's home to life. He is 15 years old but she has figured out how to play with with him and him with her! Thank you guys for allowing us to adopt her and welcome her into our family! ❤️

Paid a visit today to have a rescue dog licensed. I showed up about 10 minutes after opening, and they told me that they didn't have the paperwork to license her at the moment. I said it was fine and shopped around for around an hour. I called about 3-4 times. Approximately 15 minutes in between. I left a message, and their phone just goes straight to voicemail with no returned calls. A complete waste of time. If you need a dog license, go visit the Portsmouth City Treasurer located at 4934 High Street. They had me in and out in under 5 minutes. Don't waste your time or bother coming here. Other than that, it was a clean place and they seemed to have a good variety of animals.

After losing our dog in February 2023, we were finally ready to adopt. Portsmouth Humane Society staff were friendly, flexible, and accommodating. My husband and I were able to meet the dog on the day I called. It was a match! The staff assisted us with paperwork and provided supplies and food, as we decided to foster to adopt. They are very supportive, taking many steps to ensure a successful adoption. Our experience was excellent, and we have decided to adopt! Thank you, PHS!!

Clean facility. Nice employees. I wasn't there to adopt, but to get a dog tag. They don't have them thanks to the city of Portsmouth's ineptitude,so if you need one, have fun at city hall!

A really clean and caring environment. My new fur companion had been in this facility for 14 months. He's very healthy and had obviously loving care. The staff is doing a great job of providing temporary homes for animals in need!

We’ve gotten dog and a cat through this facility over the past few years. The staff are always friendly and knowledgeable. I find that they seem to really care about the animals they house, and do their best to find their animals a good home. It really is a great place, and it’s amazing that Portsmouth has them around. Definitely check out this place first before buying a dog or cat from a breeder; there are loads of animals of all ages that could use a loving home instead.

We had an appointment scheduled in advance from 5 days before this date, when we arrived at the place they told us that they could not attend us because we were 2 minutes late, it is ridiculous since the place was empty there were no more people waiting, (we stayed 15 minutes in the parking lot and a vehicle or a person never arrived at the place) possibly they had already given our dog Chadwick up for adoption and they did not want to tell us, really two very arrogant receptionists who do not have the ability to give a sincere explanation or how to deal with respect To clients, it is a pity that we are wanting to help and give a home to a new pet and we are denied the right to do so and collaborate.

We unfortunately have to give our cat up due to our 8 month olds new cat allergy, we called Portsmouth Humane Society and we were able to get an appointment coming up to get her surrendered. The lady on the phone was so sweet and we feel very good about our kitty going to a place that many say shows such love to their animals. I will update once we surrender her, but so far the process was so easy.

I don't know if it was bad communication with colleagues or what. My partner and I went in Saturday in hopes of adopting a fur baby and were happy to meet a shy little girl pit. We wanted to get her that day but she needed some vet stuff done on Tuesday so we left. After filling out paper work given to us by the worker she told us she would call us when she was ready and that we were first on the list so we were granted to get her. We called Sunday just to check on everything and she said she would call us as soon as she was ready and cleared from the vet. We came in Monday to see her again as we were excited to get her when she was ready. Again the worker there said were on the list and we were first so she would call once she's cleared. Tuesday they were closed but we called anyway just to make sure. So Wednesday (today) comes around and we called from the time they opened till 1:30 and no one ever answered so my partner went up there. To his surprise when he went in someone was already in the process of adopting her. He was confused on what was happening because from what we were told was they would call us as soon as she was ready. I called and what I was told was no one ever got around to calling us because they were busy and that on the paper work we signed basically said signing this doesn't guarantee an adoption. We never saw this on the paper work and we were never told this either all we were told was were first and as soon as she's ready she's ours. We were very very disappointed seeing as all weekend we were checking on her and we bought everything for her even a custom name plate and collar. We just wish this place had better communication with their customers because this never should have happened.

I adopted two precious black kittens from the Portsmouth Humane Society. All of the employees/volunteers were nice. Although they are short on staff, they do the best they can under the busy circumstances. Plus, they had an "Adopt One, Get One Free" policy for my kittens. I'm so glad I chose to adopt from the Portsmouth Humane Society.

The staff was very nice. I walked in to see the animals without calling first. I wanted to bring at least four home immediately, but I'd promised myself that I wouldn't even fill out an application for a few visits. I'm definitely going back!

They will put down a beautiful pit bull dog just because his owners abandoned him. would they do the same if a golden retriever or a chihuahua was abandoned? actually live out the “humane” in your title. putting down an animal simply due to space is cruel, when there are countless people who would want a chance to love that sweet animal. Horrible. Do better.

Had the pleasure of interacting with them through their cause for paws event. It was a great event and I hope it helped a lot the animals they have in their shelter! The reason for 4 stars is because one of the other volunteers (she could have been employed with the shelter, I’m not sure) was handling one of the adoptable dogs that had been brought out totally wrong. He was choking himself out with his martingale collar, and when I tried to approach her about making his leash into a harness she insisted that a harness wouldn’t do anything for him and that he just needed training. She wasn’t rude or anything but a harness would very well have helped him and would have protected his neck/trachea from the tightening of the martingale collar that wasn’t doing anything.

Sad time. I had to take my "granddog" there because I was unable to care for him. Everyone was very supportive and nice.

Wonderful animal shelter with great staff. Highly suggest adopting from this shelter. And if you can't adopt, you can foster a pet and the shelter provides what you/your pet needs to thrive. All you provide is a loving home. You can also take animals on field trips! 😍

Sent our cats in, one to be seen after he had an accident at home and the other one shots. No one was home but the cats. The curious cat injured himself and the staff members wouldn’t allow us to pick up our cats bc they said it was “blunt trauma”No one hurt the cats bc my kids were in school and my husband and was busy running a company at the time.My cat friends say “oh cats ALWAYS get into things”Then why does SPCA think we abused them?I’ve taken my kids to CHKD in the past and they never said they had to keep my kids there bc they were sick or injuredI can’t believe you people! The good news is it’s many other places in America to get cats 😊

Clean facility, pleasant friendly staff, the animals are available for foster/adoption, however due to PETA and the City of Portsmouth mandatory regulations, the animals are spayed or neutered at too young of an age risking their health putting them at risk, spaying pets under 6 months an adverse or deadly reaction to anesthesia is possible, the standard veterinarian recommended age is 6-9 months for a small breed female, for larger breeds the timeframe is 12-15 months. Spaying prematurely can cause orthopedic abnormalities. Closure of the growth plates, present in the long bones is controlled in part by sexual hormones, if spayed prior to growth plate closure, the closure is delayed which can result in longer limbs and musculoskeletal abnormalities, increased risk of cranial cruciate ligament in the knee.Additional orthopedic abnormalities include bone tumors and hip displasia anyone who has had a large breed dog understands the pain of the disease, affecting the quality of life and pain of the animal as they age. I fully understand their thought process, however when adopting an animal especially a puppy, they are potentially causing permanent damage, lifelong suffering and expensive treatment for the adoptive family, which could result in the animal being returned to the shelter when it gets older. There are many options that are humane that can be used to reduce the pet population, also stricter laws and regulations for licensed breeders, we need to focus more on the welfare of the animal and hold people accountable for dumping these pets. PETA does a lot of good work, but they also hinder what is best for the community and the animals-my information sources are AKC, ASPCA, and Good RX Health.
