Brought a stray that I found to this shelter. We loved her but thought she needed to go through the stray hold process (legally speaking) We expressed my family was interested in adopting her. They told us we would have to wait 5-7 days. Only to find out they were planning to let someone else foster/adopt her not even 2 days later. We called multiple times and voicemails but heard nothing. Would have never brought her to this place.

As I sit and read the reviews I can't help but wonder whats the other side of the story. But I am not here for that about a year ago (around this time I moved here) I rescued my best friend Pablo from this amazing shelter. I was ready to purchase a dog ,being that I could not find a dog at the Colonial Heights shelter. I googled and did not realize Petersburg had there own shelter. When I arrived it was not what I expected they made sure we were all clean and sprayed ( I have never had that done) prior to entering all of our information was taken. When I walked in they had a full house of just love ... I was at a lost but I saw my Pablo he is a Dan Lab Pit mix I asked how long do dogs like this stay in shelters. I was told it was hard to say because he is going to get big and some people won't understand it. Now we are not big people but Pablo was perfect for me. Not only is this facility super clean. They followed rules I had to bring my other dog in to play and meet along with the kids.I recently found a stray dog and rescued her off the street. I went to the Petersburg shelter and without hesitation they took that pup in. There is more to the story but not important. I must say hands down the best of the best of with what they have. I will follow up on to see what happen to that puppy here soon.That day I was inspired by them to see if they had any positions open and by gods grace a position was available. I am former military I helped people in my country and I feel its time to help out the Pablos of the world.Thank you for what you do and inspiring me.

Trying to report a missing animal during normal business hours. No one is answering the phone, and the gate is locked shut. This is extremely aggravating. I understand that thanksgiving is tomorrow, but if you are open, unlock the gate. If you’re closed for the holiday, please mention that in your voicemail, because you did not. My heart is racing and my dog is gone. These things don’t stop for the holidays. Unacceptable

My daughter and I have a genuine love and heart for animals so when we seen that the Petersburg animal control were giving away animals she asked me to take her we got there we looked at the animals and our heart was touched by a few of them but it was one in particular name Buckner that was in special condition that they weren't adopting right away but the lady told me she felt we would make a beautiful home for him and that she was looking forward to us taking him long story short we came home we set up a spot for Buckner we got super excited they never called me to pick him up I called to see if I could pick him up the first time they told me no the vet didn't feel it was time to let him go. I waited a week I called back and this time the girl said she was brand new and didn't have any information no one ever called me back and when I tried to call back they had blocked my number not sure why I got treated this way I was just trying to have a good heart and an open home for an animal in need

This facility is pretty amazing - although it's aging, it's kept immaculately clean and visitors are also 'cleaned' before access to minimize any health risks to the animals. The staff clearly cares about each and every animal. I was permitted to spend a good amount of time with a dog who was of interest to me, and given all the information available on her. The City is very fortunate to have this group of dedicated and caring control officers working for its animals.

Horrible!!! I’ve been waiting over an hour for help with two loose vicious pit bulls that tried to attack me and my puppy. No help whatsoever. Luckily they didn’t attack and kill me waiting on them to help me.

The staff was professional and easy to work with and made the adoption process easy. They transferred Brutus to the vet of my choice for his pre-surgery visit and surgery. The goody bag that accompanied him was well stocked. They are very thorough and picky about who adopts their fur babies which is how it should be! They really care.

Apparently there is no animal control in Petersburg Virginia. Submitted emails about long lofts and the constant Barking and howling by dogs left unattended in apartments and it's been 3 months and it's still going on. No follow up, zero communication. Leaving animals unattended for days and the neighbors have to suffer with the howling and Barking for hours on end is Inhumane for not just the humans but the animal as well. It's sad because even the lofts management can't control it.

The organization never keeps their information updated on PetFinder, which is frustrating in and of itself.I've visited on multiple occasions looking for a companion for my pit-mix. On every occasion, the staff have been rude and oddly militaristic. Typically, when you enter a rescue or pound, the staff is excited to see you. In Petersburg, it is the opposite. They act like you are a burden and taking them away from something more important.They don't let you bring in your phone or camera, spray you down before meeting the animals, they run a background check before adopting, and don't let you put your hands near the side of the cages. I understand most of those policies, but personally I want to know whether my future dog is going to come up to sniff a stranger and how they are going to react. I also want to know how they react to me before meeting them in a room.I can't really explain it, but they just give off the impression that they think the dogs there are better there than they would be elsewhere. It's uncomfortable to be watched as you walk by the dogs, getting warned if you get too close to the side of the cage. It's just bad vibes all around. I wish I could just relocate all those pups to another shelter.

I loved how clean the facility was, how strict they are about who adopts these animals to make sure they go to a good home, professional and kindness they showed me and my mother. I liked how they answered every question we had and well these animals where being taken care of as they should be of course. I recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a new family member to love cause it’s a clean, happy and professional facility and the staffs are great and so is the dogs. Lol!

They work so hard to care for those others don't want. They REALLY LOVE every animal that comes throught...That being said, I can never get ahold of them when there are stray dogs in the neighborhood.

I had a great experience with Petersburg Animal Control! The staff was great to work with, pleasant and patient with me. I had a lot of questions and they answered them all. Officer Broughton really took time with me and I am so appreciative. She looked out for my "little girl" Diamond right up until my adoption. I like the teamwork I saw between Officer Broughton and her staff. Tgey work real well with each other. I couldn't be happier with my adoption and I highly recommend adopting your next furry friend from them.Happy Mommy

They described themselves as an enforcement agency and take their role seriously in standing up for the legally guaranteed rights of all animals of all kinds. We love animals and show it daily. Wrong....... They are rude, crude and above all don't know how to operate a proper animal control shelter. Would never surrender my dog there. FYI if they tell you they put your dog down because it was in a stressful situation duh.... The dogs go from being in a home with an owner they know to a building that is cold, smells like death and doesn't know anyone, how would you feel if that had been you? Stressful yourself is the answer. They leave a bad taste in my mouth. If I could I would not give any stars, if you need to get rid of your family member(s) look for someone online and meet in a public place or put an ad on a proper website or local paper before taking it/them here.

Absolutely love these people, they are truly sincere about caring for the fur babies in their custody and making sure they have proper homes to go to. BTW Roxie has adjusted so well she is the most playful loving little girl

I read the story about the precious furbaby that was euthanized. I think the shelter could have or should have dealt with the situation differently. The shelter manager stated the dog bit her, I was not there but at any rate a person needs to understand these animals are scared and confused! I think this shelter manager should be fired, along with the other employee's who were involved.... Hire people with intelligence and compassion for life! People who understand these precious animals! What an unintelligent woman they have as a manager! So sad she has a black heart 🖤

I think it is horrible that you put a dog down after only one day in there. The dog was frightened and felt insecure. If you had any compassion for an animal you would have worked with the animal rather than killing it! You need training to learn how to handle the job.

We came home last night after a mini vacation and found a snake in our house. We tried to look it up and web result showed it might be venemous. We called animal control for help but they were closed and apprently have no emergency assistance. We then attemotes police non emergency for removal and they said not our problem call us if you get bit. The next morning the snake became attached to a glue trap we had down for crickets and caterpillar. Animal control proceeded to scold us for being cruel and harming the snake stating she would write us up if she could. We understand all animals have a right to life but the snake was not placed on the trap nor did we try to trap it. We called our local helpsource who was no help and then were lectured. She did not provide education for future use but instead condescension and belittling. I could never reccomend a facility represented by ppl who are so unprofessional.

Literally the most WORTHLESS staff possible. I HAD to turn a dog over to them after my sister (that was 7 months pregnant) found a dog that was chained up on the side of the road in the pouring rain. After 2.5 hours of waiting for help, I drove from POWHATAN, got the dog, tried to take him to not only the police dept. but another shelter and couldn't because Petersburg HAD to open a criminal investigation (which they never did). I saw staff members at an adoption event and they had no idea who he was even after showing them pictures. I recently checked on the dog and they have NO RECORD of him coming in! How do you lose a dog if you are supposed to be helping them?? I have no idea where this poor guy ended up but I hope it's better than the shelter I LEGALLY HAD DROP HIM OFF AT. They need to be shut down and taken over by someone who actually cares about the animals. If I could give -1,000 stars, I would.

They knowingly sell you sick dogs, my puppy had parvo and kennel cough. They never even treated him....so once we adopted him, they had us do it, but it was too late. Within 5 days, he was already dying and was later put down. No excuse for this, PERIOD!!! 😠 This place ought to be shut down! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

They were the cleanest shelter I had ever gone to and very thorough. They call recommendations and if you have another pet they have them meet just so they can make sure the animals will be safe.

I’ve complained about my four children not being able to play in a public park located on our street for 8 years due to dogs getting loose and biting children and they have not done anything to help. Don’t waste your time calling handle the situation yourself.
