I love Crater road vets! They always take fantastic care of my dogs. And they take good care of my puppies. They always fit me in when there's an emergency and when you have puppies there seems to be always an emergency. I could not ask for better care of my dogs! I 100% recommend them!

Dr Phelps and his team are compassionate, kind, reasonable and quick. Since it was after the holidays many clinics including my own were backed up. This team was able to see me within the hour and it was evident the doctor and assistants truly loved the animals they care for by the way they handled my Charlie and me. Thank you so much! This was something I prayed hard to not be too serious because I have been at my threshold regarding heartache. Thank you for the relief and taking care of my fur baby. I will be switching to your clinic. Charlie seems to feel better already.

This visit they were pretty quick getting us in and checking out my fur baby. It's rather ridiculous that after all this time only 1 person is allowed in and must wear a mask at all times. While walking out of the exam room I saw the front desk women didn't have theirs on.

They are the worst! At first they were good on time, good customer service. By the third service things changed, I don’t know if they changed staff or what. My dog went for a grooming service they cancelled the day of. Ok so I rescheduled they did half the work and sent her home a mess with promise of finishing it up the next day. On top of that, they canceled again cause the groomer had an emergency. They didn’t even call to tell me that, I happened to call to make sure they were gonna see her. Two whole weeks we had to wait. Now I have been waiting a whole hour past my dogs appointment time for a health certificate to fly in two days and they are talking about they have an emergency come back later. The worst!!! I don’t recommend!!!

This is not a cat-friendly facility. I bought in a stray cat, and they were warned that he does not like to be handled. Instead of using the correct equipment and materials, the doctor mishandled the situation, approached the cat roughly, and wrestled him against the wall for its vaccination. As a result, causing a huge, actively bleeding scratch across the cat's nose; it left blood spots inside the cat's crate. Despite being a stray, he should not have been treated like this; the cat has never been aggressive towards me. Previously, I brought my own cat in for a yearly checkup, and she was not thoroughly checked either.Update: Perhaps there was a misunderstanding between the level at which I can handle the cat and the level at which a stranger can. The only information I received is that he has a hematoma. I was not informed that he would have to be sedated for future treatment.

**WARNING: DONT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE UNLESS YOU WANT THEM CUT OPEN, SUFFERING, AND AN UNRESPONSIVE VETERINARY TEAM!!**Followed Dr. Phelps from the SPCA after working there with him, have been taking my dogs here for a while (that’s a 40min drive for us not an easy appointment on a reg day to carve out given I also have human babies), my GSD has been dealing with chronic ear infections to a sufferable point so our last option was surgery. She had surgery on Monday I had some concerns that needed to be addressed— REGARDLESS OF REACHING OUT FOUR TIMES OVER THE ENTIRE WEEK I WAS NEVER CALLED BACK BY A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. Not one. You cut into the side of my dogs head and you never addressed the concerns I had for my pet the entire first week post op. Not a single medical professional gave us the time of day. APPALLING. DISGUSTING. SHAMEFUL PRACTICE.I do not care how insignificant you though my concern was or if anything left as a message is “perfectly normal” — YOU CALL YOUR CLIENT BACK ~because she’s not a vet.~I hate, hate, hate leaving such a terrible review for a Dr I swear by in this town. But, after this experience we’ll never be back and I’ll never send anyone else to you either. You take hundreds of dollars from clients and then DO NOT SUPPORT THEM IN THE CONTINUED CARE OF THEIR PET. In tears trying to help my dog cope with her suffering and we just didn’t matter. There will have to be some serious action taken to rectify this situation for me remotely consider the possibility of changing this review.I doubt anything at all will be done. And because of that: Someone else will take her sutures out, someone else will be examining her head to make sure she is okay for now and you didn’t butcher her, and someone else will see her for continued care.Good friggin riddance!

I don't understand why they are still messing with masks. But other than that very nice, they did a great job.

I tried to schedule my kitty, Sammy, to be neutered and told them I had a SPCA certificate. SPCA stated the neuter would be $75 @ Chesdin Animal Hospital but they can't get him scheduled until July 24, 2024. Crater Road Veterinary Hospital provided an estimate of $120 - $160 with an April 2024 appointment. When I asked if they would consider using the SPCA certificate for the cost of $75, they said NO! So unfortunately, due to the cost, I had to cancel. It's sad to know that money is the ultimate decision maker for this place instead of an animal... when in reality, ALL animals SHOULD be their priority.

I took my dog to our usual vet Crater Rd Veterinary Hospital because she was due for her yearly checkup and shots. They literally did not examine her at all and gave her two shots and sent us on our way. No temperature, no going over heartworm or fecal results, no looking at her teeth, ears (which she has a chronically bad ear), eyes, trimming of nails, NOTHING. It was crazy. Just quickly rushed me out to pay the bill. When I told the front desk that our other dog had recently passed away so they would know I didn’t even get an “I’m sorry to hear that”. They just updated the file. This practice has changed and used to be a good place but I am positive you should never take an ill animal here. He at the very least seems extremely negligent.

The staff seems very nice, and so is Dr. Phelps. Just got my kitty in 2020, so I can't tell you more about the experience due to their COVID protocols, we can't sit in there with our fur babies yet. That's about the only thing that sucks about the experience...

Fantastic vet!! I have been loyal to our current vet for years- but they are quite the drive. When some health issues in my kitten arose I called some local vets and Crater Road was happy to take him. We are working together to treat out kitten and it feels so good to be heard by a vet!! I am a first time cat owner but have had other animals, and the team here is amazing and actually listens to us- letting me know if I'm being an overprotective cat mom or if its a valid concern. Our treatment with them has been amazing

I appreciated the personal approach of the staff and the doctor. They gave me the option of being with my girl which I appreciate so I was able to be a part of all her interactions with staff and the Dr. The doctor was very personal and treated my dog like a friend and not just a patient. That meant a lot to both of us. I would recommend this veterinarian to others.

Gosh, this post could be a short novel. We've only been going to Crater Road Veterinary for a year now. It all started when we had to find a new vet ( we were not happy but understood his reasons). We started going to Locke Taylor & Assoc. Dr. Owens was now seeing our boys. When our Border Collie was coming out of a bad seizure. I called their office and asked if I could bring Huey by just for blood work, then leave. They could just draw from the car. The front desk told me NO, I would have to bring him in as an emergency appointment and it would be around a 2 or 2 1/2 hour wait. I asked them did they consult with the Dr re what was going on, and they responded to me YES! I was more than angry. I immediately told my husband what the vet said. We both agreed this was the last straw and we'd had enough of our share of problems with this vet. I had started crying while I was trying to research veterinarians. I wasn't happy with any that I was finding. I don't do social media but I typed in our old veterinarian's name, and THERE HE WAS, Dr. Kevin Phelps! Oh how we had missed this fella. I did a little bit more searching and found out he had purchased Crater Road Veterinary. I immediately called to see if he was accepting new patients and he was! Beth, sweet/kind receptionist, got all three of our boys records from their old vet. Got Huey right on the appointment book. When I took Huey in and when Dr. Phelps came thru the door it was amazing. The only way I can describe it is like...your loved cat gets out, weeks, months go by, and it hasn't come home. Then one day, you open your door, look down, and there's your missing cat. We have a long history with Dr. Phelps. We've been seeing him for 25+ years. My husband used to drive from Maryland to bring his dog to see him. Dr. Phelps has been great working with our rescued Border Collie Huey. He is a HARDSHIP case and hates everyone. Phelps first met him when he was 3 and now he is 12. Dr. Phelps has been with our rescued Labrador Retrievers since they were pups. They both have/had disabilities. He worked wonders with them. Phelps first met them at 9 weeks. Phelps was wonderful with Duvel for the short time after we found Phelps. Jan 16, Duvel passed away at the age of 10. We were so happy that Dr. Phelps was there for Duvel, and I know Duvel felt the same way. Dr. Phelps was also with us when we lost our first rescue, Fenway, a Blue Merle Aussie Shepherd. He was just 2. He was my first dog. Duv's, brother, Satchel is now 11. He's been thru a lot. Phelps handles him with such grace. We have NEVER had ANY issues with Dr. Phelps. We know if one of the boy's has a problem, he welcomes a second opinion. He does not judge. He's wonderful at explaining any type of issue(s) where you can actually understand the problem. He's great at answering questions and finding the answer(s) if he should not know the answer. He doesn't preform unnecessary test when there's no valued reason. And one of my many favorite things he believes in, that I highly believe in, is not prescribing medication(s) when they are not justified. If my boy's can take one last med or even get off an unneeded med, I'm a happy Mama. When I knew Dr. Phelps was going to be our boys doctor is when he first came thru the door, ignored me, got on the floor with my dog, and started interacting with him before introducing himself to me. I want my boy's to be primary and me secondary. I know a lot of us don't like changes. Changes can be tough, like right now with COVID-19. Yes, this practice has a COVID Policy in place. It's there to protect EVERYONE! Me personally, I greatly appreciate their strict policy. To ALL the staff at Crater Road Veterinary, "Thank You ALL for everything y'all are doing"! I'm so glad Dr. Phelps is back in practice. We live in the West End and drive to Petersburg to see him. There is no distance we/l wouldn't drive to see Phelps. We think of Dr. Phelps as family. We highly recommend Dr. Kevin Phelps. Dr. Kevin Phelps is one of a kind in his field of work; very rare.

The veterinarian here is amazing! And so is there staff. My lab mix with showing symptoms a couple weeks ago where he was losing for around one of his eyes and on the top of his nose. I was able to get an appointment the next day and left with medicine to treat him and vitamins to help him. Highly recommend.

I have taken my very large older dog here twice and they have been great. The staff is very nice and the doctor is just as kind. I felt very nervous bringing my old boy in and their approach definitely eased my nerves. It's really appreciated.

They have a wonderful staff but the continued covid protocols are ridiculous 🙄 I can't keep sitting in my car waiting close to an hour for my dogs to be returned to me. Only allow one person to come in with pets but you have to wear a mask.... for what... I will now be taking my dogs else where.

Thank you to the vet and staff for the compassion that they showed my husband and I when we had to have our 13 year old dog put to sleep today.

Our dog loves them! :)The staff knows how to care for "senior" dogs, who can tend to be a little temperamental and finicky. Our 9 year old Lhapsa "Angel" gets the best care whenever we take her there! Highly recommend this establishment.

Always fast efficient and care for my pet is excellent. They do not try to talk you into unnecessary treatments for your pet. They just keep them healthy and happy.

They have been consistent with fair procing, and not failed to help my dog but the system they've been using since COVID is rather absurd. Very long waits outside in the car, and recently they started letting one person in with a mask. That sounds like a reasonable precaution on paper, but the reality is that you have to pay a dollar for a mask for the privilege of being in the room alone with your dog to keep him calm. I only got within 6 foot of another human for a few very brief moments. Seeing my father in the emergency room just a few weeks ago in Roanoke I wasn't asked to wear a mask once. I don't think there's any real thought behind that policy anymore.

Visit went great. Pets and owners are still being asked to wait in car to be called to appt. Everyone was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Dr Phelps is still our all time favorite vet.

I was referred here by a family member. I absolutely love the staff and the vet himself is very thorough. Great place to take your pets. My pup just got spayed and they called once she was out of surgery to let me know she was doing okay. When I went to pick her up they were very informative on how to take care of her following surgery. Will definitely continue to bring my fur baby here.

Very good people to help us make it through a very difficult time! The BEST Vet in the Tri City area! Reasonably priced, excellent Vets, We have tried numerous vets in the Tri City area and they are Head and shoulders above the rest! They give you what your pet needs, unlike the others that rake you over the coals to jack up that Vet Bill! Are starting to be weird about you coming in with your pets, they want you to wear a mask and if you don't have one, they will SELL you one!!

They take really good care of our animals. Dr. Phelps really seems kind and caring about his patients. We do wish we could come inside with our pets. Sometimes it's hard when it's hot to have to sit in the car and wait but they take good care of us and the prices are reasonable so I would recommend them to others.
