We had the pleasure of adopting Echo on Dec 30th. I wanted to write this review to bring awareness to how wonderful this shelter is-it was clean and staff were relatively friendly and conscientious of the animals within their care! We'd visited another one in Chesapeake and just hadn't connected with any of the dogs there but here came Echo! We hadn't fully expected to adopt that day but couldn't bring ourselves to leave without her, so we rearranged our lives and rushed to Costco and Petco to get what we needed to bring her home!My only request regarding improvement would be to please ensure your establishment has thorough notes on aftercare if the pet has any health issues that you'll be needing to keep an eye on. In our case, Echo had just been spayed and notes stated that while under anesthesia, the DVM noticed an anal abscess that had ruptured and performed wound care. The woman who was handling Echo while we visited, however, had stated that Echo had anal gland surgery--wound care versus surgery are two very different things. So, when I got home and gave her a bath, I noticed that she had some drainage from the site and was kind of anticipating stitches, so I was concerned that there were no aftercare instructions provided by the DVM within her file aside from documentation of what had occurred under anesthesia. But, all of this was easy enough to navigate and maintain until her complimentary vet appointment, so it really wasn't a major concern to me. It might be to someone else, though, which is why I'm mentioning it here! Verbal instructions are not enough. You need to include the aftercare in paperwork to cover everybody involved!Echo has adjusted so quickly into our family and for that, we are truly grateful for having the honor of bringing her into our family for the rest of her life!

The only reason it gets a 4 is due to the wait time . The two times I’ve come to adopt from here they took over 20/30 minutes . Nobody checked in during that time or provided an update . However , the handler that helped me with Astro & Laila ( now Luna ) , was as sweet and gentle as can be . Also very knowledgeable about transition to home & future cat care ! My two fur babies are well loved and socialized . They’ve been home for a year now and thriving well . ❤️

Be aware of this place, it's a place that will break your heart. Next thing you know you've adopted a fur buddy. Adopted 2 beautiful cats with personality out of this world, Adopted strawberry on Saturday and went back the following Saturday and adopted Dali. Now they've taken over the house. Adopt if you can, please.

This here is Shadow formally known as Queso. My friend adopted him today and he’s has not been able to put him down. He is absolutely in love with his new fur baby. This facility was extremely helpful on getting him the right kitten. Lots of options with lots of helpful information about their history. I will be going back myself to get me one soon. Thank y’all so much

Do not adopt from this shelter we adopted a dog three weeks ago and were told he was fully house trained and had no health problems other than a rash from fleas. About 2 days after the rash on his feet got much worse and he had to go to the vet who told us he either had an infection or a severe allergy. He also had absolutely no house training despite what they said he’s had multiple daily accidents since he’s been here and appears to pee on certain items intentionally usually our personal items as well as tearing up everything he can get ahold of. Nearly every bit of information we were given about the dog is untrue and he’s so much of a problem with his destructive behavior and untrainability we will have to return him to the shelter

We adopted this lovely girl one day after her first birthday. Her name was Tana but we changed it to Serenity. We brought her home in May. The adoption process was very easy. We did a meet and greet there and decided we wanted to bring her home. Serenity is a beautifully natured girl. This will be the last home that she goes to because this is her forever home. What a beautiful way to expand our family. God Bless.

If I could give no stars I would.. that's how horrible this place is. I visited this establishment twice and both times the staff was unprofessional and lazy! Our sons were very excited to possibly adopt a dog we all were interested in. We asked to have a meet and greet with the dog and they said no because she had other things to do. How rude is that?

This shelter looks super nice. It has a lot of animals and does some.great things for the community. We visited multiple shelters in the area and this is by far the nicest of them all. However, the staff were not welcoming and somewhat rude. It was very off putting. There were at least 5 people at the front desk, of which only one of them actually acted like they cared. We waited for 45 minutes to interact with one of the animals that we were interested in adopting. We finally had to leave becuase we had to pick up my daughter from school. The staff were visibly offended that we wasted their time! I actually had to say "I'm sorry but we didn't know it was going to take this long and I don't beleive that you aren't understanding that my 12 year old is more important than what we are doing right now". Then another staff member took over and said we understand, please come back if you decide you want to adopt! Needless to say, we did rescue an animal but we adopted it from the other newport news location!

Thank you for the work you are doing in the community for these animals. I found an abandoned injured cat eating from the trash, scooped him up, carried him home, than brought him in and they graciously helped him out. Friendly staff, clean lobby.

We always support the local animal shelter. The staff lacks communication and organization between each other and volunteers. Paperwork was filled out multiple times and still needed to be redone because someone misplaced it. Calls were supposed to be made to us, but were not.We brought home 2 kittens and thought they were bonded and that we were being given a reduced price for getting 2. That being said since we budgeted a certain amount we decided to use the left over to purchase the over-priced toys, collars, and crate from the shelter so that we can continue to give them support.Almost a week later someone calls and says that they accidentally didn't charge us for the second kitten (it was entered in as 0.00) and that we needed to pay .No. I'm sorry. I am not going to pay after the fact for your lack of communication and organization. We have a bill of sale that was paid in full for 2 kittens and extras. We shouldn't have to pay for your mistake. It is a wonderful place and I always encourage people to support their local shelter, but please do better.

The shelter itself is absolutely beautiful, well cleaned and maintained, and the staff are wonderful! The only reason it isn't 5 stars is that the animal cages aren't as clean as Id like.

My daughter and I adopted our sweet, lovable kitten, Eris from here and we couldn’t be more pleased! The staff really work with you so you find the right pet. The wait times can be a little long for a meet and greet, but it’s worth it to bring home your fur-ever friend! Get there EARLY, at or before 12pm so you can secure your spot on the waiting list!

They were great, helpful and the facility clean. I was impressed! The staff was friendly and professional and truly helpful to each person that came in. You could tell they were there because they care.

I need to preface this with a few things - I used to work here years ago and have recently had to surrender a mother cat and her kittens in the hopes that they would find good homes. I rescued mama cat months ago when she was pregnant and have called around and tried to find people to take them the entire time she was under my care, and I had her for so long she ended up giving birth under my care. So so many calls and emails were sent out asking, begging for someone to help and take these animals because I did not have the money to give them vaccines, get them spayed and neutered, and adopt them out myself. That's a story in it of itself, but let it be known that I tried my hardest to find them anyone that could take them off of my hands for so long.I called PRAS five times over the course of a week. Each time I went unanswered and left a voicemail. I gave them my number to call back, hoping that they would call so I could schedule an appointment to surrender. I tried to look up their website - 404 not found. I tried their website under the city - no links to schedule an appointment anywhere. Maybe that's my fault I couldn't figure out their website, but anyways I feel as if I should have gotten literally anything back. Finally I decided I was done and I would just show up, because there's only so much you can do over the phone when they refuse to pick up and refuse to call back. I brought the cats in with me, and boy guess what the lady at the desk asked."Do you have an appointment?"I told her no, and told her about how many times I called and how many other places I tried. It was at the point where I couldn't keep them any longer, I did not have the money to feed them or care for them any longer and they NEEDED to go somewhere else. She tried to get me to make an appointment and leave so I could return another time. Unfortunately after how many times I tried to make an appointment, I decided I wasn't leaving with the cats. She tried the typical scare tactic - "Anything could happen now, we're filled to the brim and they could be adopted or they could be euthanized and we can't tell you what happens after you sign them off."I've heard it a million times, and while I appreciate being open about the truth, yes they COULD be euthanized, it is extremely unlikely and using it to scare someone into leaving when they have literally no other options at this point is downright rude and apathetic. I'm not stupid, and I know those kittens would get adopted out in a heartbeat. I can't believe the sass and attitude I got from her when I explained my story. I can't recall how many sighs I received, how many eye rolls she gave me at the desk, the open attitude she gave me when she used her walkie to call Jacob or Brian or one of the other supervisors from the back. "Yes, I know someone here in NNews that could have taken them in," "Yes you could have received help elsewhere."You know what? Maybe if anyone bothered to pick up the phone and give me extra resources I would have been able to make a few more calls. But no one did, and I will NOT be told it's my fault I couldn't find someone else to help me since you didn't want to do your job. Unfortunately it seems that after I stopped working there, service has gone very far downhill. They don't care about you, they aren't sympathetic and they do not want to help you. While I understand they're there for the animals, not you, there is no reason to be blatantly rude to someone who has literally exhausted themselves and their wallet taking care of five extra cats that they couldn't afford in the first place.I 100% believe you should adopt from here, I know they take care of their animals as best they can and keep the place clean and healthy, but what can I say other than the staff is entirely unhelpful otherwise and rude beyond belief. If you don't want to work with people or don't have the skills or basic human empathy to work with people, don't work in a career path that has you interacting with people on a daily basis.

The wait and process to adopt was quite long. The facility was clean. The staff seemed kind and caring. I was there for a beautiful little bunny, she is the sweetest! Overall I was happy with the experience and will go there when we are ready to adopt another animal.

What can I said. MOMO is the sweetest kitten I had meet ever. I was love at first sight I'm not kidding you. We saw each other and interected instantly. I could Not, not take him home. Immediately the staff prep everything . I filled out the paper work online before going into the animal shelter cause I was sure I would have find my soul pet mate here. I didn't wanted to look anywhere else I told my self it would be destiny and it was. MomO is a adult street cat, with no health issue and his a polydactyl babe... He's an old soul. And we love him. The shelter was clean, pets looked happy. They have dogs and cats , guinea pigs and other pet pockets for adoption. You enter and the staff is friendly. Yhe place dosent smell. The pets looked healthy and they will give ypu a very detailer oriented story health of your furry babe. Thy have a vet on post. I recommend this shelter is a non profit and they don't kill animals. (There's no puppies or little kittens) you can always call and ask. Trust me im I love.

The people at this facility are rude and dishonest. The left my family’s dogs in per and poop. They told so many lies and had my family very upset. My family wad so shook up for days after finding their dogs dirty and so absorbed with pee and poop. They should not lie like they did.

Really easy process and the staff takes time to make sure you go home with the right pet. Very honest about all the animals history. Definitely go as soon as they open if you have a specific animal in mind because it does get busy quickly. I love my kitten 😍 she made herself right at home as soon as we walked through the door.

Do NOT surrender your pets here. They say they are a no kill shelter but it isn’t true. Wish they wouldn’t lie about this.

Day 3 and I absolutely love my fur baby Maggie. When I first did the meet and greet she was vary timid but sweet. The shelter knew so much about her and that alone made it easier to realize she is a perfect match for my lifestyle. Day 1 leaving the shelter she hopped right in my car i took her home and wiped her down with a dog wipe(she didn’t mind) then she hoped right on my bed. Day 3 she is already my best friend ❤️ Thank you to the staff for being so caring to these animals you guys rock.

I guess you only get good customer service when you physically go there, reading other people's reviews. Don't Call Asking For Help finding an animal. They will just tell you to come in and look yourself, because it's too much for them to look themselves. That's what I was told.

This was our second fur baby from here and we couldn't be any happier! The volunteer Nancy was the absolute best & a real delite! She truly helped us find our second love & was extremely knowledgeable about cats from her experience. I highly recommend! Don't forget, if you adopt kittens, get two!
