Getting to this place was a little interesting, I think it would be great to have some more signage on route to let you know you're not in the middle of nowhere haha. However, once we got there, the service was superb and I am really happy to report that the mead and wine was phenomenal. We are big mead drinkers and I was so happy to taste meads that were true to the flavor profiles they reported. We started off with a 5 dollar tasting which was so helpful to see what we would like. And they have options of purchasing flights with cheese and crackers and chocolates as different palate cleansers. I was a big fan of all the tastings and options. Also the outdoor seating area was very comfortable. Highly recommend!

This was an unexpectedly beautiful spot where we had a lovely brunch outdoors, surrounded by goats, blackberry bushes for picking, ducks and comfortable seating and very friendly staff. The lavender and rosemary were so fragrant in the garden too! There was an array of food, such as charcuterie, cheeses, crackers and packaged and bottled foods that were out of the ordinary. Think spicy quail eggs, dried beef lung and infused honeys to name a few. They even had chicken and duck eggs for sale in the cooler. See photos. This was definitely a great place to come to!

What a hidden gem! I think they I’ve learned to really enjoy mead and Hill Top makes the whole experience SO very enjoyable. We had the small sampler (in the communion style cups) and then progressed to the tasting in the carafes, complete with bread, cheese and chocolate. After that we fed the goats behind the store … what a pleasant day! The person in the store was friendly, welcoming & knowledgeable. If you are on the Nelson 151 you need to stop here!!!

Add this to your must stop wineries. My daughter and I went there twice this weekend. Everyone is so nice and owner gave us the back ground on the goats she raises and are right there for you to interact with and feed. Beautiful huge deck for all to enjoy. They have wine and meads that are delicious. There will be something for everyone to enjoy

Stopped there after spending the weekend at Wintergreen resort and was not disappointed! We came specifically for the mead and everyone was able to select a favorite. The service was fantastic and all questions asked were happily answered. We purchased a bottle of Hunters Moon which tastes exactly like pumpkin pie and the Harold which was an apple mead. Very pleased.

A very relaxed, family friendly atmosphere! Never heard of mead before coming here. Unusual and delicious choices of meads and wines. The $5 flight is a great way to find a favorite 😍 And the baby goats are the cutest!! My grandkids can't wait to see and feed them every year.

We hadn't been to Hilltop since 2018, and it was nice to come back. They've *really* expanded over the last four years: there's tons of comfortable seating both inside and out. There's also an area with goats that kids can feed. The mead is absolutely delicious. We got the 5-dollar flight, which had 8 communion cups with four different wines and four different meads. This was nice to help those of us who didn't really know what we liked. I bought one bottle of pumpkin mead and one bottle of native persimmon mead. Love this place and can't wait to return!

We visited today as a group for my friend’s bachelorette party and it was an amazingly special experience! GO HERE!!! Everyone was SO incredibly friendly and went out of their way to ensure we were having a great time. They personally came over to congratulate my friend on her wedding. The tasting flight was a great deal and way to decide what we wanted to order more of. The opportunity to hold baby goats and sheep was an unexpected surprise! I also bought several cheeses and meats from the store and everything was exceptional. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this special small business. If I didn’t live in Chicago I would come all the time. Just go!

Loved our experience here with Greg and Kim. The hospitality and drinks are unmatched. Got to spend some time with baby goats and met their dogs. Would definitely recommend their flights, the Raspberry wine, and seeing all that this place has to offer.

The best wine in the area! Love that they have expanded their deck area and are offering more charcuterie options too. Had to buy a couple bottles to go as well.Editing to add, went back yesterday and had their signature sangria cocktails. So good! And huge!! Plus we each had a sampler, a glass of wine and bought some bottles to go. Love their patio and petting the goats.

We decided to stop at the Hill Top winery. The goats were cute, but someone was holding one and it was clearly not happy. It wanted it's Mama. We tried the tasting for $5. It was different, than anything I tasted. It seemed like folks liked the wine. I was not a fan, but a nice view.

We visited Hill Top for one of the stops on my bachelorette weekend trip and this was definitely the best place we visited! They were SO friendly and treated us like family, let us meet the goats and dogs, and had the best wine and mead. We’re so glad we stopped here!

The mead is some of the best I have ever had. And it is in a truly beautiful setting. I went during the winter (no snow) and it was still gorgeous.

Happy that we stumbled upon this place on our way through town. I saw some photos of farm animals and "hill top" - and I figured it was worth stopping. Animals are there and are very friendly - just like the staff. The Blueberry Melomel was some of the best fruit wine I've ever had. And if that doesn't intrigue you, they have some delicious cheese and homemade oyster crackers with one of the samplers. If it tells you anything, we ended up buying a couple of bottles of ones we tried, and the cheese. I like cheese. Apparently they now are able to ship the wine and meads to your door, so I'll probably be checking that out, too.

Cannot recommend enough! Friendliest staff we've encountered at any winery/brewery. So incredibly accommodating and fun to chat with. This trip we had our kids along and they spent the entire time petting the goats. Tons of outdoor seating, which we prefer. Wine was delicious and plenty of options with wine, meads and cocktails/slushies. They mentioned they have blackberry picking at some point during July and August, which we will definitely be back for. Plenty of meat and cheese options available as well. Highly recommend!!!

Off the beaten path and tucked on a pleasant hillside farm this spot offers some of the best mead in VA.TLDR: If you’re an avid mead drinker then you have to make your way here and try it out. Matador, Jolly Dragon, and Voyage are the go to’s. Charcuterie boards are pricey at 55 but if gives you a lot and you keep the board.Atmosphere: It’s a farm, but the outside sitting area and newly built deck offer a great view. The interior needs some updating as it hasn’t been touched in over 11 years but still nice enough.Mead: This is why you go here. They make both traditional and fruited mead. The varying flavors have grown over the past decade and they have an offering for everyone’s pallet. I personally enjoy the Matador. A classic honey mead with blood orange.Wine: They tend to be on the sweet side here. I’m not really a fan of their wines but if you like dessert it’s a good choice they’ll have something for you.Staff: Most of the staff are great, they check on you from time to time and provide great service. If you’re not in the mood for a lengthy and louder conversation don’t engage with one of the managers there. She’s pleasant and fun, but you will be socially trapped for a minute. In the end. We went home with over $200 of mead. I regularly visit this place each year to get a supply. I encourage you to do the same when you’re in the area. Stop by flying fox winery for their table red near by.

We have been on the wine tour 4 or 5 times and this is my absolute FAVORITE spot. I cannot say enough great things about it. Love the atmosphere, the fruit wines, and the staff. I wish we loved closer! They even have a jam we love to get, Its called "Peach Habanero" and we have used it on everything. This place does not disappoint. A must try

Absolutely incredible experience, I cannot recommend highly enough! The staff were wonderful, very happy to explain the wines and meads, while also giving us the space to enjoy our flights and glasses together. Sitting outside with gorgeous weather only enhanced the experience. Socially distanced and very clean, you will not regret visiting Hill Top!

Great spot to visit and enjoy some wine or mead. Lots of wines and meads to try and buy as long as you like fruit wines. Have small indoor space and a covered patio area. Cheeses and meats available to enjoy and the service and people there are nice and helpful

I always love when we go to Hill Top Berry Farm. To sit outside, sip on wine and mead and to watch the animals and to hold the baby goats just makes the day even better. I always tell people to go visit when in the area of 151. Greg and Kim and their staff are always great.

Was disappointed they were sold out of the jalapeno Meade. Checkout person was great. Waitress was eh. It was busy and you could tell she wanted to move on when questioning about offerings

I have been wanting to try mead for some time now and found this place online. Four of us came to sample a flight. The mead was very good, a little sweet but tasty. I got 4 bottles to take with me as they are not for sale in any local Virginia stores. The Jolly Dragon and Hunters moon were the favorites. Seemed appropriate on a nice fall day. Sitting is available outside during this COVID time. Beautiful views of the mountains, vines and local goats. I will come back some day. I love the $20 flight and getting to keep 2 glasses.

Has a very nice selection of wines and plenty of outdoor seating. The view sitting outside is amazing where you can see the fields several miles away. I would say the highlight of the trip was the melon wine, it was the first melon wine I had ever tried, and it was amazing. The final few minutes of the drive is on a very narrow roads I recommend going very slow and watching for oncoming traffic.

There is always something new happening at Hill Top, and that's a great thing! (Check out the seasonal glasses.)While your preferences may vary, their true-to-the-fruit wines cannot be beat. There are goats. There are often coos. In the Summer wild rabbits bounce about. It's been a favorite location for years!

This place is quite small and off the beaten path which is good and bad. The parking lot is very small, there isn't a lot of seating. They have baby goats and geese which adds to a positive experience. The downsides pick up pretty quickly from there. They only had 2 wait staff and they make you wait to be seated which causes a long wait at the front. They only have ONE restroom so expect a line for that at all times. And the biggest negative is the wine... We had 4 people try their flight and of those 4 people each only tried one wine they liked even a little. Taste is subjective so I'm still giving 3 stars.

Loved this place! They are different in that they offer wines made with fruits that are not grapes, and they offer mead as well. We did a tasting for only $5, and since I bought a bottle of mead my tasting fee was waived! There are so many different things to choose from and they all look wonderful. The people we met during our tasting were very friendly and knowledgable. I'll definitely be back to try more.
