Hands down the best burger in all of Virginia! The hospitality happens to be unmatched as well. Will always make the trip to The Whole Ox when driving thru Virginia. 🍔 🍺👍🏻

Honestly the cooked food is good, but half the time it feels like the people there don’t want you in and the other half they don’t even follow their hours posted or stick to them when you call to confirm an hour before. It’s a higher price than any local meat in the area and have gotten half rotten meat more than twice and had to run back exchange it making dinner for my kids late. Great place to stop for cooked food there, not so great as a reliable store.

Really charming. Best burger I’ve ever eaten, hands down. Beef tallow fries are amazing. Curry ketchup is a nice different choice. Soft drink selection a bit limited. Very comfortable, if limited seating, we were lucky to be on a slow day. Retail looks interesting - an oddly expansive vermouth selection. Is vermouth a thing now?

Visited on the 4th of July. We ordered a burger and the fried chicken on a bun and shared an order of fries. We loved the Chicken and the fries. The burger was disappointing as it reminded me of an old Wendy's commercial "where's the B...". Staff was very pleasant and the place was busy with customers. It seems to have a following. If I return, I will just order the chicken again.

They've been the best for over ten years. Their sourcing cannot be matched. For streaks, chicken, ect they're excellent. The skill of the sausage maker is also unmatched. Even the eye-of-round is eye-popping.

I was passing through town for work and decided to stop at The Whole Ox instead of going home to my normal butcher - what a good choice on my part! The Whole Ox is a cheerful little store with exceptional service and reasonably priced local meats and goods. The employees were extremely friendly, helpful, and eager to share information about their local vendors. I highly recommend The Whole Ox to anyone passing through Marshall.

Order at the counter and get their amazing burger. Then go to their freezer and bring home some of their grear soups (carrot ginger is a fav of mine), and beef or chicken pot pie. So good!

Went to get a few things for dinner as we were staying at a place nearby. Incredibly snooty attitude for seemingly no reason. Bought crackers and cheese groceries and were told "there's a tip option" for buying our groceries. Wow. I've never been asked to tip at another grocery store in my life. So if you're into overpriced attitude to pick up mediocre meats and cheese this is your spot

This place makes the worse charcuterie board. For a place the sells all the ingredients to make a good charcuterie board they suck at making one for you.I went over the other day to purchase one cause I was in a hurry and they literally just put American and Swiss cheese with ham. That was all. There were no Crackers no exotic cheeses or sauces nor olives. I was blown by how horrible of a job they did. Unfortunately I didn’t notice until I got home but it was such a disappointment I’m never coming here again.

we stumbled upon this place, ate delicious burgers. Beer fries and sides were very good. Then took more to-go food home.

I’m a little confused on this place. It was so hyped up and we were so excited to go.Womp womp.I had the burger. Driest, crumbliest burger ever. The crust tasted…… ok….. but it was dry as a bone. I had to ask for extra sauce just to be able to get it down. I was also asked if I wanted pink. No pink. It was cooked to oblivion. Husband had a chicken schnitzel. It was….. meh.All in all…… not worth it. Definitely a skip. I have had better meat and food at Martins.

Had a class on how to butcher a lamb. It's obvious by talking to these guys how much they care about their products and what they do. It shows in the quality of meats. Worth the little extra you pay. The class was excellent and their selection was great, looking forward to another visit sooon.

Love the burgers we had for lunch, BUT don’t waste your money on the meatloaf. We paid $26.00 for a take home meal and we couldn’t even eat it, tasted nothing but seasoning. Who ever is making the meat loaf’s is awful heavy handed with the seasoning. We ended up throwing it away,I guess it’s buyer beware…

Amazing place to get fresh meats, produce, bread and dairy! They carry meat from Creekstone farms (my personal favorite), roseda farms and buffalo creek farms. I highly recommend coming in here if you are in the area.

There is no better burger than the one here...Fresh, juicy, & tasty. So good I sometimes catch myself daydreaming about this burger..To top it off, The Whole Ox is also a butcher shop with local wines/beers/foods/treats. A must try if you have never been and a must go back if you have!

The Ox is a very nice place to grab a hamburger with a cider or a glass of wine.(no cork fee). I purchased a chicken sandwich to bring home for my husband. He said it was “great”! You must try the sandwich’s with the in house smoked bacon!!I would very much recommend this place!!Service was excellent.

This past Christmas I went on a search for a free range, fresh turkey from a butcher. I landed on the Whole Ox, who was selling what they described as a fresh turkey, called a Kelly Bronze, from a manufacturer that claims to raise the animals in a fields instead of pens etc. There was an emphasis on the fact that this was a fresh bird that had been hand plucked and dry hung. And the word fresh was used multiple time in the literature. Hence the price point of almost $300 dollars for a 16 lb bird. The day I picked up my turkey I was shocked to find that it was frozen in the box. On Christmas Day when I went to prepare the turkey for cooking I found large chunks of a hard white substance all over the bird that looked a lot like wax. I picked most of them off and then emailed the farm about it. I was shocked when the farm acknowledged that this was in fact food grade wax and that they use it in their plucking process. They essentially dip the birds in the wax to make the plucking easier. This infuriated me as I didn’t pay that kind of money for a turkey of this quality to have to deal with picking wax off of the bird so that it didn’t contaminate the drippings etc. also contaminating a organically grown fresh product like this by dipping it in wax is in direct conflict with the whole purpose of buying such an item. I expressed my displeasure to the farm and to the whole ox. To date I haven’t gotten a response from the whole ox who marketed and sold this fraudulently marketed scam of a product. I won’t be buying from this place again.

I was having a retirement party and wanted to buy a dozen steaks. These were the best steaks I have ever eaten. I was born and raised in Texas and I'm not unfamiliar with steak. You will not be disappointed. This is high quality custom cut meat so it's not "Costco priced." It also wont taste like anything you ever got from there either. Friendly staff and nice ambience also.

Locally owned and operated butcher shop at a level of quality that is rarely seen nowadays. Their meat is top-notch, their lunch specials are the highlight of my week, and we LOVE their take-away products and pop-up dining events! Truly a don't miss stop when you're in Marshall!

The bid for catering a wedding was TBD on all food/menu items, but they certainly had no problem quoting a dollar amount for a small group (15ish) at $12,000…and they were still fishing for a tip. NO THANK YOU. Go someplace - anyplace - else. I’m serious.
