Not worth working here! Bad management, and too much drama for a small place. None of the managers can support their team. They mistreat staff members, and think that they can do whatever they want, and if you do decide to work here then I wish you the best of luck, because it’s not worth it. Three of us have left this job due to the bad management. I’ve stuck up for my coworkers, and yet I still got targeted for it. I’ve worked here for little over a year. Worst experience I’ve had for a job.

Hello all!I adopted my girl Mia from Almost Home last November. She is very dear to my family, and she is often the light of my day.I'm proud of Almost Home's dedication for their animals, and everything that they do for the Nelson community. Our family has had many experiences with Almost Home, and a couple have been sad, but all in all, this shelter has some of the most caring staff and volunteers I have ever seen.Thank you, Almost Home, for being awesome!

The friendliest and sweetest group of people you'll ever meet. They helped me find not one but two sweet kitty boys that are my world. They need some love

Great place to volunteer as a dog walker. Staff is extremely nice and welcoming. The trails are really nice and each dog has their own room. I have only been volunteering for a few weeks and I have already met a couple of the board members. They were very appreciative and welcoming. After volunteering at a different shelter and being treated awfully I am so glad I know volunteer here and at Fluvanna. Support your rural shelters 😊

Very caring and friendly staff. Very nice facility, much better than any other animal shelter I have seen, and it is a no kill shelter. The staff genuinely cares for each animal there. I volunteer there with the dogs and love every minute I'm there. Unlike most other shelters the staff here makes sure animals being adopted go to good homes that provide what the animals need, not just what the adopter wants. Definitely a five star facility.

Today, my 90 yo mother and I visited. Even though we arrived a bit before "open" hours, they kindly let us in to see the kitties. I was struck by how much this group loves their animals and how well taken care of they are. The cats are very social and friendly, a sign that they are loved and played with and would make excellent pets for anyone. The kities in our local shelter in Northern Virginia aren't as friendly and social. The cats in this shelter were so friendly and clearly have been given a lot of attention and human touch. They were very well-adjusted. Look forward to going back

In June, I adopted the most beautiful hound whom I re-named Keava from Almost Home. She previously had been called Elaine. In the Scottish language, Keava means gentle and kind and she has lived up to her new name since I brought her home. She treats her older sister, a 15yo curmudgeon, I mean Bagle, with respect and tolerance and her younger brother, my 5yo grandson, is her best friend. It has been so much fun teaching Keava about treats and snuggles on the couch.Almost Home was a joy to deal with and as I knew I wanted a hound the whole adoptionprocess was easy and uneventful.

Almost Home is a wonderful place, full of living, caring folks who rescue animals from harmful situations, and take in the abandoned and unwanted. I found my perfect young adult cat there. After making sure I was the perfect person for Lucy, we became the perfect family. Everyone there was so very kind and helpful. It was a fabulous experience. ♥💕♥⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

(Short version-poor Board management/mismanagement, ship newly advertised cats to Massachusetts (where supposedly they all get adopted in 5 days), please don't take a small child here with their heart set on an animal as they may already be on the list to head up North). Over all animals seem to be definitely well cared for just seems that there is poor management. My husband I have been here twice, so at this point I feel okay writing a review. The staff is very passionate about their animals, so much so the first time we went we didn't even know if they adopted animals out or just kept them permanently. We do want a good fit for our home and we tried to be pleasant the first time, but we went looking for a cat and their worker that day did not look up any of the cats we were interested in. Most of the time was spent talking about dogs (that wouldn't fit for our family), showing pictures of other people's dogs, and their success stories. Again, we were very polite, but over an hour later left dismayed.Recently, we decided then it was probably a fluke and that we should give the adoption center another chance as we had found another cat we were interested in and just wanted to meet. We found the cat we wanted to meet and play with in the lobby, he was listed as cat of the month oh, and the website had encouraged us to come meet him; however, when we arrived the same employee was working. We were told that we could not adopt the cat even though it had been listed less than a week ago. We were told that the Board of this facility pays a lot of money to ship the cats to Massachusetts for adoption and all the cats in the lobby would be leaving probably by Monday. I had spoken with another worker of the facility just that day and they had mentioned the cat was adoptable,a we'd make an excellent home, and just fill out an application.my husband was a little irritated to say the least at this point and stated it made no sense that if there were nice adoptable homes in the area why would these cats be shipped to Massachusetts. To be fair, the employee tried to make accommodations and called the individual who arranges transport and what animals are sent, who stated that she guess we could have that cat if we filled out an adoption application right then and there or made a decision by 6 p.m. that day only. We informed the staff that we needed some time to think and were told that we had until 6pm that day or he was going to MA and that he was being taken down off the site as of this review he is still listed as the cat of the month but is not on their adoptable page.My husband and I felt that that was unfair to the cat as we really wanted to meet him and then make a sound decision as we were adding a family member and not a piece of luggage.I typically try to avoid negative reviews, but my husband and Iwere concerned that some parent would take their small child here, have their heart set on a cat, and have the child's heart broken. For those thinking that we're just a family that should not have a cat and are writing just a disgruntled review---we own our own home, have helped run multiple farms, our animals get BarkBox, treats, and receive regular veterinary care. Have adopted before. We typically spend more on our animals than we do ourselves.

The volunteers here are wonderful people, almost as great as all the animals that pass through their doors. As a dog trainer I get the privilege to work with some of their arrivals on the days I voluntee; there's no such thing as a bad dog.

Very determined to match adoptable pets with the right family so their adoptions are successful. Nice facilities there and it's clear they really care. They even made follow up calls to us to see how things were going after our first few days.

Wonderful Workers and Volunteers working no stop at this no kill pet shelter and adoption center. Many different cats and dogs of all ages. The staff knows the personality and give each a name. I wanted to adopt a cat 1-3 years old, to be a companion for my 3 year old Maggie, who's sister May suddenly died from pancreatitis exactly one month earlier. In 30 mins interacting with 20 different cats I found Maggie a new sister named Dora (yes she is a explorer) 18 months old who is perky, happy and started purring when I put my hand out and she put her head in the palm of my hand wanting her face & ears rubbed. In less than 48 hours both adjusted to their new home, and slept on the same bed just a foot or two apart. I am convinced the care these animals receive at Almost Home while waiting for someone to adopt them is why the adjustment process went easily. Maureen A Vaccaro

Great people doing un-appreciated work. They love their charges & do a great job of matching. Have adopted 2 dogs over several years and they were so helpful with both adoptions.
