Great local pet store, far better experience than chain stores. They have far more and better food options, they have a very friendly and knowledgeable staff, and their prices are well within reason. Tough to go wrong here, I only wish one were closer to me, but I'll continue to drive across town to go here.

Made my grooming appointment 2 weeks in advance after an initial consultation with the groomer. was told to drop my dog off at 830am and that he would be done by 3pm. Got a call around 2:45 saying he wouldn't be ready until 5:30 now because there were "more dogs than expected". So I showed up to get him at 5:30 and was told it would be another hour. Returned at 6:30pm and he STILL wasn't ready. Ended up taking him home at 7pm. 10.5 hours after I dropped him off for his "scheduled appointment". I informed them from the very beginning that he was a rescue and didn't do well in crates. Yet he was left in a crate for an extended period of time, with no bathroom breaks or water I assume, due to the accidents he had in my car and the 2 full bowls of water he drank when we got home.I don't understand why my dog was the first to be dropped off and the last to be groomed, despite making an appointment well in advance?His hair looks great but we will never be going back again, as it was clearly a very traumatic experience for him since he has regressed back to the timidness and extremely submissive behaviors he had when I first adopted him in December.

I've been shopping at PJ Pett's for about 3 years now. It started when my cat was having stomach issues and itchy, flaky skin (he constantly looked like he'd been under a dusty piece of furniture). After trying some of the higher-end brands at the grocery store and PetSmart, as well as several vet trips, to no avail, I decided to try P J Pett's.I should have gone there from the beginning! They were so helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable, but not at all pushy or sales-y, and they have a great selection of small-batch, all-natural pet foods that are made in the United States from actual meat. Try to pick your jaw up off the floor. After trying a few out on my cat, I settled on VeRUS. Is it more expensive than something you'd get at a big box store? Yes, BUT my cat is no longer getting sick to his stomach (saving on carpet cleaner, paper towels, etc.) and his skin and fur look amazing. I can tell he feels better too.A huge bonus, in my opinion, is that P J Pett's is local. I love that the same staff has been working there since I started going, that there are two cats that live in the store, that they're so laid back and interested in your pet's needs, and, of course, that I'm supporting a small business in Richmond. I'll never go anywhere else!
