Very friendly place, great gear, hiking shoes, camping outfitters. Seems to have everything you'd need, tents to trail mix. Their door was open for the beautiful day and my dogs dragged me through the whole store; very impressive. They also do guided tours/camping/kayak trips from offices in back. Even had harnesses for the pups, had I needed them. Didn't take pics, but maybe I should've.

Walkabout is a tremendous local merchant that I have been patronizing since they opened in Harrisonburg. The staff and crew are always knowledgeable, happy, and enthusiastic. They also carry top-notch equipment and gear. Please support them as they're an irreplaceable part of our outdoor community here!

I just went in looking for socks. I could not have imagined that I was about to have the best experience in a store that I can remember. Rachel was extraordinary. It wasn’t just her extensive, personal knowledge of the merchandise. It wasn’t just her prompt service. That’s all appreciated of course, but what makes Rachel outstanding, fantastic, is a level of warmth and hospitality that made me feel like I was talking to a neighbor I’d known for years.She knew I wasn't going to be a giant sale, yet she still made every patient accommodation of my extreme indecisiveness to ensure I was choosing the right…socks! Not a Ferrari or a Rolex. Socks.It’s not just that retail needs more people like Rachel. The world needs more people like her. I’ve never felt this strongly about an experience in a store. And sure, I only dealt with her, but I’m confident that whoever hired her must be good people too. If it sounds like I’m gushing, well go buy some socks (and more!) at Harrisonburg's Walkabout Outfitters, and you’ll see what I mean.I’m going back there to buy something else, anything else, I can think of.

Really good outdoor gear selection and great service. Very clean and organized and well informed staff. We walked away with 2 new pairs of hiking shoes (Keens for me & Oboz for him) and some good hiking socks. Would highly recommend them!

Went in recently to purchase replacement tips for hiking poles. One of the ladies working there asked where we were from and staying. She recommended the Dark Hollow Falls trail in Shenandoah National Park since we mentioned driving through it the previous day. We really appreciated the suggestion and hiked it that day. It was well worth the effort going down and back. Thanks so much!!

Been browsing for backpacks on and off. The people here have been gracious and helpful every time.I also left a few things here on a recent shopping trip, came back, got some of them, left, realized I forgot something else, came back, and they had moved it behind the counter to safeguard it. Seriously, I can't beat the customer service 20 out of 10. Truly work with you to help find what you want. I'm picky when looking for stuff, and I regret grabbing the gals name working with me, but she dug deep to help me out. Definitely worth the stop

Went in looking for trail shoes and Leslie was a great help; she was friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. I love my new Altras - I wore them out of the store and hiked in them for the next three days! Such a great store and great experience! Staff was SUPER friendly and helpful. They are dog friendly, and we brought our lab in and they gave her a treat and so much affection! They have a great variety of outdoor gear and apparel/footwear. Highly recommend to anyone in the area!

Walkabout Outfitter has great quality gear and clothing in a well organized, clean store. But what makes them really stand out is the amazing staff! Walkabout has been my go-to outdoor store for years now, and I am especially grateful this year as they’ve helped me prepare for my AT thru-hike! Vince is knowledgeable, patient, and kind—he answered all my questions (even ones I didn’t know I had,) helped me go through my gear list, and made sure my pack fit properly. Bobbie was also so helpful and supportive, and I always appreciated how she checked in with my progress every time I visited the store. The staff was super helpful! I am section hiking the AT and desperately needed some guidance and a new tent. I brought my pack into the store and dumped everything out for a complete shakedown. Vince went through each item with me and helped me to streamline everything. Ended up grabbing a couple waterproof bags to help keep things organized, an extremely comfortable and lightweight sleeping pad, and the perfect backpacking tent, among other things. The entire experience left me feeling that I was in great hands and I was so pleased with the attention to detail that I will be getting my next pair of trail runners shipped up the trail from here!

Very helpful staff that can quickly explain the differences in the offered products. Prices are often comparable to Amazon and they offer a better curated collection of high-quality goods, helpful advice, and serve as a valuable community hub for outdoorsy folks of all types. I found a tent that I really wanted and I could only find the style/color I wanted online on Walkabout Outfitter’s (Harrisonburg) website. The website did not offer shipping to Alaska so I contacted the store to see if there was another way I could order the tent and have it shipped all the way up here.
