I adopted a dog back around 2013 named Coco. Coco traveled with me across the USA while in the military, through college, even there with me when I started my family along with a new career.Coco would play with my mentally disabled cousin and yet protected me from a home intruder. Sadly, I buried her today at our Montana home.I just wanted to thank you guys for giving me a best friend. Our family will miss her dearly but are thankful for the time we had with her. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to have these wonderful memories with Coco.

It was a wonderful experience. The staff was excellent and professional. You can feel the love for the animals and their job . We adopted Sweet potato, and he loves his new family. His favorite place to sleep is next to Duke our 4 year old bully.

Hi guys,I just wanted to share with you how much we love Boba. We had changed her name to Ember. She is the sweetest, kindest, and full of personality cat. Thank you for saving her. I wish I could share a photo..she is adorable and her hair grew in so beautiful.

Love that they now work with other Shelters and Rescue's to keep the number of animal's that would be euthanized very low! They have lot's of different activities for the public to take part in and educate children on proper care of them as well.

(Everything that has happened was in the course of a week) We started an adoption process to bring a new dog into my house hold. We started the process with Abigale (i believe thats her name) and her assistant (do not know her exact position, nor her name), and everything was going so well. Then one day we get a call explaining that the original owner was wanting to get the dog back but wasnt sure just yet (which is all fine, but still bummed me out.). Abigale said we could still do the meet and greet with my current dog, and still go as planned, but couldnt set a pick up date till the original owner made a decision on wanting the dog or not. So we proceeded on it. On the day of the meet and greet, a third lady who was not part of the staff I had been working with, had stepped in and completely took over. The entire time she kept criticizing my current dog. Saying that it was “wrong for me to have my dog un-neutered because it could very well lead to him having cancer in the future” (which speaking with my vet, is a very very slim chance) then proceeded to say my dog was terrified of the other animal, and the potential dog was trying to attack my dog. Which was the complete opposite of what i was observing. She asked what my intentions were for the potential animal. My response was “I planned to have the dog service dog certified to have her as a companion dog” Her words in response were, “We do not release animals to be service animals.” She then asked the lady who was handling the new dog what she thought of the interaction. This person said “She just seems very playful with the other. I dont see any harm” She told us she wanted to do a second meet and greet with another staff member to have a second opinion. Once scheduled, i came back the next day to reschedule the meet and greet due to conflicting work schedule. She proceeded to talk about my application and question how i was so young and owned my own place. Once i explained that the house is mine and i live on my families property, she proceeded to say “well we need to check the tax registry to see who owns it to ask for their permission..” Through this entire process with the 3rd lady, I have felt like SHE did not want me to adopt this dog, and it upset me very very much. It also upset my girlfriend because she was looking forward to the new dog as well. This facility needs to work on who they hire because this was NOT professional. And resulted in them loosing a potential adoption.

I got a cat from here 10 years ago which recently passed away. I got another cat on March 13th she's a beauty. Spencer, the young lady who assisted me with the adoption, was truly a pleasure to work with; they take great care of the animals they're loving professionals. This is a wonderful place to go if you're considering adopting a pet.

We adopted our beautiful little Precious around Labor Day this past year and could not be more happy with her. She has become another member of the family and loves her multi-mile walks given to her by my wife (Amy) everyday. Thank you Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society for allowing us to adopt our new furry pawed daughter!

The Glouchester-Mathews humane society provided us with our loving buddy Jimmy in 2011. Jimmy had been abused by his previous owner and needed surgery to fix his hip. Folks there helped raise money for the surgery to fix his hip. We greatly appreciate their sacrifices and support. Once Jimmy healed from the surgery he was up and running around with his brother and sister. He is a joy to our family.

My boyfriend and I tried for several weeks to adopt a cat named prism , came in a handful of times to check on the progress of the cat’s availability (which we were told to do by a staff member who made it very clear she did not agree with the new adoption process). We were told he would be posted to the website the following week after he went to the spay and neuter clinic and that the website was the only way to fill out an application. We checked every day to see if he had been posted yet and he had not been. We also called several times ( as instructed) to be met with poor customer service and receptionist who had very little of any information to give us. One didn’t even know what cat we were referring to and refused to check. We followed up the following week and were told the cat was no longer up for adoption because it was going to rescue. We came on the exact day she told us to to. Seems there is no communication or organization going on around this facility pertaining to the new adoption process. Extremely disappointing seeing as to how prism was very clearly up for adoption considering a photo of his adoption was just posted on the gmhs Facebook.

I went there to give them many extra blankets & sheets. The lady at the desk rolled out a large bin to my car. It was much easier than for me to carry them inside by myself.

The whole process was simple, and the facility is beautiful. The staff was very nice, too. We found a wonderful kitten to take home with us, and he had already been neutered, had his shots, worming, and was started his flea and tick control. He is a delight!

I’ll only leave 2 stars because I got my kitten out of it. When adopted they didn’t even know she was fixed. Was told we’d be spoken with about coming back. We never were, and got home just to find on her papers that she’s fixed. They also forgot to give us her original kibble to transfer her slowly to the food I provide at home. To top it all off she was pooping blood within a week. When I called they basically said that that’s my problem now and they never saw anything. (“When you signed the papers you took in medical responsibility, you can do that or bring her back I guess.”)To top it all off, I left a voicemail they never responded to saying someone wrote the number down wrong. I told them my name, the cats name, date of adoption, everything. They could’ve found me. To top it all off, when I told them all this the first thing the woman on the phone said was “… okay so what’s your dogs name again?”

I had (and continue to have) a great experience with the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society. I adopted a cat who has absolutely become a part of our family and enriched our lives. Since then, we have been donors to the cause and have attended their annual auction which was fantastic. Great entertainment, excellent food and auction items at all price levels. I have also been to their new facility to visit with the animals. The place is spotless and well run as well as a GREAT place to volunteer. The volunteer coordinator, Kristen, is passionate about her job and goes above and beyond her duties to make sure the animals and the volunteers have a great experience. We will definitely adopt our next pet from Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society.

As someone who works in Animal Welfare, I can honestly say that Gloucester-Mathews is an amazing place. All pets are spayed/neutered, microchiped and up to date on vaccines prior to adoption. The staff and volunteers are amazing! The rooms and habitats are clean and the pets get a lot of enrichment while they are there.

This is probably the nicest animal shelter that I have yet to visit. The animals are obviously well cared for. The cat room is really awesome--each cage has a little extra "nook" for the cat to climb up into (which cats LOVE) and you can still see them inside it. There are 2 cat visiting rooms where the cats can play freely and you can sit in there with them to visit. They built stairs all around the room for the cats to climb on! It's like a cat playground. The dogs are on the other side of the building and are equally well cared for. The dogs wear bandanas and there are treats you can give them. There is a room for small animals and another gift shop room where you can buy items that help support the animals. I highly recommend it, whether you are looking to adopt, or just want to stop by and give some homeless animals some love. 💙

I’m grateful to this organization for bringing us our dog, however they have left my partner and myself not wanting to go back to get another animal in the future. Before we adopted our dog we had to foster her because of HW treatment. With that being said any kind of vet trip had to be approved by them first. She has some bad skin issues unrelated to her HW and when ever I called I was told oh we can look when you bring her for her next shot. They would prescribe her an amount of Zyrtec or Benadryl and that was it. The day of her adoption we were told she had a staph infection and they had also lost her leash (minor detail but still kind of gets under my skin) we took her to her new vet, we find out the shelter didn’t dose her the right amount of medicine, and didn’t look to see if it was anything else major. One day after the vet her skin had started to clear up.One other thing, upon adoption we got her file of everything we needed to know about her, we were told that she was a surrender do to divorce, she was not. We were also told she hadn’t be around other dogs or children, that also was not true.I feel like I sound a little like a Karen in this but I’m just not happy with how things went about in the process and some of the information we found out after the adoption would’ve helped us through the foster portion too.

Love this place. The staff are friendly the Pet Quarters are clean. They also have a really cute gift store. I don't believe they charge you an arm and a leg to adopt an animal. I guess I'll find out next spring when I get another kitten

The facility was clean. The employees were helpful in talking to my husband and myself. We had all of our questions answered. I loved seeing the Dogs. cats. Bunnies and herbals. The only thing I was let down about was the adoption fee. It was more than we could afford at the moment

Everyone at this establishment was warm, caring and lovely, both to my dog and me. My furbaby had some complications (due to running to his girlfriend up the road, right after he was fixed ...but...before... I let him out of the car, he didn't even know who I was, he was so out of it and so "doped up." And I did not think anything of putting him on a leash when I got him out of the car. Lesson learned, a man will never forget his current love!) As such, I called back the center, the evening that complications arised and they said they would see me the following morning, after I called. They only charged me for the medication. And my dog was so happy to see Candy again! He wanted to stay with her. I am guessing she held his paw and cared for him through his original procedure. Because he honestly seemed to love her so much and want to stay with her, when he saw her again for the second time. And I cannot imagine any other dog being fixed and then visiting the place he was fixed at again two weeks later and loving one of the persons who was with him during that. However, Candy clearly loves her job and is genuine when she speaks to you in person and over the phone. And must be the best bedside nurse and veterinarian assistant an animal could ever dream of, especially when they are down and out. Great job Candy. I know my dog was very sad to leave you, Miss. Candy and thank you ever so much for all of the caring love you gave him, while he was with you both times. And thank you to all of the caring happy smiling beautiful souls at your center to include the vet, which we were unable to meet, due to COVID-19. Also, I would like to say, they handle the COVID situation with the upmost care for the health of the pets, their parents, the staff of the center and anyone else who is around. Great job!!!Also note, do not give your dog Advil for swelling, or any medication without contacting your veterinarian.
