I will go over and drop off old pillows and towels. Christmas, I will drop off pet food and a kit for folks to use if they adopt a pet. They are always in need of kitten and puppy food. They have mentioned that they prefer if you did not wash the donated clothing. It helps the animals get an idea of how people smell. Last time I was there, there was a group of folks working with the dogs on basic leash skills. It's a busy place. If you are interested in adoption, please make sure to call ahead and make an appointment.

We absolutely love this shelter! We adopted our cat, Andrew Garfield, a couple years ago and it was such an easy experience. The shelter is so clean, and the staff is incredibly kind and attentive!

The staff at Henrico Animal Shelter were very helpful, showed genuine compassion, and went above and beyond to help reunite me with my lost pup. They loved her when I couldn’t! I am so thankful.

I adopted my fur baby from here 5 years ago. He was 2 years old and so scared to be in the shelter with all the barking dogs as he's a quiet boy. I saw his beautiful fur and sad face and it was love at 1st sight. He is sweet, happy, and docile and now, 5 years later, keeping me sane through the Covid situation. Please adopt from here. They are really nice here and efficient. Save a life and gain a new best friend.

I have called Henrico Animal Control several times over the last couple of months.Once when our cat went missing and they were wonderful. We found her before they did but I was so impressed with how empathetic they were and how helpful!Secondly (and thirdly), someone with a large dog was leaving the poor thing tied up in the parking lot with temps in the 100's!!! They came right out and took him. He was back the next day and tied up at a gas station up the street, they came and got him again. I did not see him again so I hope the fines were enough to either find the poor thing a good home or start taking better care of the sweet thing.

The staff is extremely helpful and friendly! We just adopted a Shitzu even that we were looking for a beagle. It was the best decision ever made! We love our new boy! Before and after pics on how he looks now.

The adoption process was very easy and painless. We were not able to take our boy home right away as he needed to be neutered and vaccinated at the beginning of the next week. We returned after a couple days to visit him and they allowed us to spend some time outside with our dog in a gated area. They answered our questions as best as they could and even gave us a special harness free of charge when we expressed our concern with potential leash reactivity.

Thank you to the staff of Henrico County Animal Shelter for taking care of our beloved kitty Seamus. We are so grateful to have him back home. Just wish our mean neighbor hadn't lured him into a trap & called you to get him like a stray, but he his happy to be back home with his family!

Called up to set up an appointment to see a dog in their care. Quickly set up the appointment and saw the dog. Decided to adopt (best rescue I have ever had, just wanted to state that even though it has no bearing on the place in question). Once I decided to adopt the 2 receptionist pulled out boxes of dog clothing and toys and gave my dog some stuff for her new home. Very friendly place!

Though i dont agree with killing unwanted domestic animals or any that's not causing harm for that matter. Animal control is needed. Not because of the animals, but because of human error and neglect.

Staff is very informative and friendly, they really care for the animals. Facility is clean, granted dogs poop but you can guarantee that the staff will clean it up right away! If you're lucky you just might see George the office cat!

There was an injured box turtle ( shell broken after bein run over buy a car) but still alive and breathing and moving his head well, on a Saturday. I called a animal hospital which asked me call Henrico animal control as its considered wild. The staff was nice and even though they close at 4.30, the officer showed up in my community around 5.30ish after finishing his other calls. Unfortunately, he could not take the turtle to a vet as the clinic had closed for the weekend.but i appreciate that he came and checked on the little guy. He asked me to leave the little guy in woidw or near water , which i did. Hope he recovers well.

I was turning my dog in and having a really hard time emotionally trying to stop crying. I asked them what if I change my mind can I come back and get him, They told me I'd have to go through the adoption process. They then started filling out my paper because I couldn't. I hugged my dog once again and started crying . I walk to my vehicle crying. Not once did they ask me if I was sure or did I change my mind. I come back the next morning and waited till they opened. I call back them because you can't see them without an appointment the person on the phone acted as if he didn't know who the dog was I kept describing my dog to him saying I brought him in the morning before, he then says sorry his gone I was like when , I just dropped him off yesterday, he said sorry I can't telll you anything. Later that evening Banefield clinic calls me to release my records so that someone could register him. I remember telling the people at the shelter that i got my dog from a breeder in the area and that it wasnt cheap. I think somebody at that shelter took my dog or that they had someone they that gave him to. He possibly could've been there when I called and they didn't want me to get him

Had to call the nonemergency police/animal control because Mr. Racoon got in a fight with a moving vehicle and ahh... Lost. He was hanging out in a turning lane and looked like he might potentially be a hazard to other drivers. After calling and giving the police the information he was picked up and taken care of by the end of the day. I'm sure he's in a better place now... at least not in the middle of the road. Thank you animal control people!

This shelter just adopted a dog to someone who had been arrested for animal abandonment (dumped/left two gerbils to be smashed by a trash compactor) and who has animals confiscated from her in the past. We from another rescue informed them, along with the fact that she abandoned the animal she said she was adopting from us (which we invested hundreds of dollars and lots of time in to fly from another country specifically to be adopted by her at her request). Every single other rescue/shelter called promptly investigated further and put her on a permanent do not adopt list, however this shelter proceeded with allowing her to adopt a dog. We are really shocked. I hope this dog ends up okay in the end. I am very worried about what will happen to him.

Several months ago I adopted a female dog named Valerie from the Henrico county Police animal shelter. She was 10 months old and a good looking dog however she had too much energy for my current living arrangement as I live with two older gentleman. Staff was very polite and helpful with my adoption and later return of Valerie. I noticed the Henrico county Police animal shelter was clean and the staff seemed generally concerned with the animals they were charged with caring for. I would like to go back to try at another adoption with an older and smaller dog and because of my positive experience at Henrico county Police animal shelter I will check there first before going anywhere else. I highly recommend Henrico county Police animal shelter for those in search of adopting a dog or cat.

Easy to maneuver through website. Clear instructions regarding pet adoption. Good to see they are implementing safety procedures to protect the staff, animals & visitors. They do not have a lot of pets for adoption, so check frequently & don't delay in contacting them to meet the pets you want. Their adoption fees are incredibly low. I don't recall seeing fees higher than $100.00, and the pets I reviewed had shots & were spayed. Thank you Henrico County Animal Shelter!!

Two months ago my roommate and I adopted a dog from this shelter. The adoption process was very quick and smooth and we were in and out in less than 2 hours. They were even nice enough to give us a couple of items since we were completely unprepared(lead, toy, harness). Fast forward to a couple of days later. When we originally got our dog(7 month, pit bull terrier mix) we were told 1) She wouldn’t get any bigger than her current size(37 lbs) 2) she had all of her vaccinations except her rabies shot 3) that she was potty Trained and 4)that she had a gluten allergy. None of these were true. We ended having paying another $160 to revaccinate her, she’s outgrown her kennel because got the wrong size based on what they told us, and she has had multiple accidents in the house with no indication of training whatsoever. She has also grown to be 55 pound and getting bigger. When we called the shelter to try and get more information they were very dismissive and did not want to help us any further. Once we left the shelter with our pup, they were no longer helpful. If you choose to adopt from them(because they have many wonderful dogs that need homes) triple-check begins with all the information they give you. I know they couldn’t guarantee all the info they give us, but it didn’t seem like they even tried to verify what they did have. It isn’t hard to have an accurate vaccination record, it is not hard to probe a little more about a dogs background; especially when there are behavioral issues, we found out she has a fear aggression towards other dogs without any warning. They are not a bad shelter, just poorly handled

A good friendly & pleasant experience. We all had on masks. Had to make an appointment to visit your interested pet. They go get the pet & bring them to you into the small glass visiting room you're in. You get to talk to, pet, rub and play with the fur baby & ask questions that help with your decision making. You may need to knock or call when you arrive so they can come open the locked door for you. I took away a star only because the chairs in the little room was very dirty.

I was severely depressed & needed a bit of help getting out of my funk . I decided to go to Henrico Animal shelter “ just to look” when I went in my cat Rusty was the LOUDEST cat, screaming his head off.Two trouble souls ; what could go wrong?NOTHING!He’s one of the best cats I’ve ever had and yes he help me out of rut which I am forever greatly for.Henrico was so patient with us , we we able to safely introduce Rusty to my 2YO at the time. Even held the cat until I ran to the bank for the measly 25$ fee.Thank you Henrico you very well saved two lives that day!!!We had rusty for about a year now and he is so important to our family unit!!!!!Staff are amazing sweet and helpful!#ForeverGreatful

The employees here are very nice & helpful when I was thinking about adopting a puppy. I ended up finding the puppy I wanted to adopt that day, they gave me the full run down about the process. Before being able to take her home, we had to wait for her appt to get spayed & we have been visiting the shelter to actually play with her in the mean time. They are very nice and gave me a lot of info on my pup. Highly recommended.
