This was a great relaxing brunch experience; from excellent food to good music. Spinach feta quiche was the best quiche ever had. Chocolate chip French toast was tastefully sweet; I normally don't like anything with chocolate chip but absolutely no complaints about this one and could eat more. Fruit parfait was simple yet complex with the cardamom, which I'm obsessed with! Overall, we're so happy with the brunch options. Portion sizes are normal, so you don't feel grossly full... Recommend!

This is an enchanted and quaint place to eat. Located right off Rt. 151 in Nellysford. The decor reminds me of a patchwork quilt. Everything is mismatched and yet it comes together in a beautiful and cozy shape with whimsical vibes. Loved the Vintage decor and tablecloth. The cheesecake is absolutely delicious- try a piece!Outdoor seating under mature trees is available as well.

I have been to this place numerous times and the food is ALWAYS delicious. I absolutely love the atmosphere. It's one of my favorite restaurants. I don't live in Virginia but every time I visit (a few times a year) I make a point to come here at least twice each trip. The last time I went was for Sunday brunch and there was a Harpist and she was amazing and played modern songs. It made the visit even better. You must try it!!

Amazing little cafe the valley of the Blue Ridge. A unique find for sure. Stopped in for an early lunch with my wife and son and were glad to have a table before they got a bit busier. There isn't much room but that adds so much of the charm for this quaint cafe and grocery. The house salad was truly amazing and felt 100% more 'farm-to-table' than a lot of the fancier places claim to have. Smoked salmon was perfect as well. A perfect portion for lunch. All of the soups looked great and can't wait to try. The dressing is delicious and I wish I bought a bottle. Such a nice owner, highly recommend!

Such a cute little diamond in the rough! Looks like an ordinary mountain side building on the outside, but when you walk in, you can imagine yourself in a little European Cafe. We ate Sunday brunch there, and everyone enjoyed their food. They also seem to have an extensive wine selection. The place is small, with some outside seating, so I would recommend making a reservation.Vegetarian options: Cheese plate with fresh fruit. Omlete of the day was gouda and mushrooms.

Very quaint French-inspired bistro hidden in the Wintergreen area. They have a very limited brunch menu, but what they do offer is very tasty. Nice touches like homemade sugar cubes for coffee, and a nice starter of freshly-made yogurt with granola and fruit. The people are very friendly, and the atmosphere is very country yet artsy. They also have a huge selection of wine, cheese, and charcuterie. We will definitely be back for dinner soon.

Really charming farmhouse style atmosphere, tons of wines, local cheeses, fresh desserts to choose from. Sunday fare was absolutely delicious.

Cute little spot! I had a great latte and bought some treats and a bagette for the trail. They even packed us out a mixed bag of cheese, bread, and toast when they found out we are thru hikers. I only wish they were open earlier to grab coffee in the morning before hitting the trail

Awesom ambience. Delicious food. Beautiful outdoor seating arrangement. LOVE LOVE LOVED IT. Only thing is a slice of cake cost $7. Will definitely visit this place again if I visit nearby again.

I came here because I was too early to check into the Monroe Institute. It was 10:30 am. I drove and looked for eatery.I saw this restaurant which is 6.3 miles from the Monroe Institute. It is lovely small romantic European theme. I was disappointed that they don’t serve breakfast because I saw french toast on the reviews. I ended up with quiches.

Fantastic brunch! Live harp music. Server seemed a tad overwhelmed and was a bit brusk, but overall great experience. Look forward to coming back.

A perfect little gem, with meticulous attention to the smallest dining details, starting with a tasty amuse bouche. Quaintly decorated, great music and complicated flavors in the food. Good vegetarian options. Affordable. Friendly. Homey and comfortable rather than fancy. Great lunch experience!

Quaint spot for brunch. It's just a little pricey. We enjoyed our no frills omelets, and only one of us ordered coffee and one drank water. The bill with decent tip came to over $50. Not normally what I'd expect to be spending for brunch without alcohol. That being said, everyone there was friendly, and there was a young man playing acoustic guitar who was very entertaining and nice.Parking: Parking is behind the building. A little hard to find at first

This is a must stop every time my wife and I are near Nellysford. There is a wonderful selection of cheeses and baked goods and other gourmet items, but we are usually there for the wine selection. Many (if not most) of the wines are organic/biodynamic, with a heavy emphasis on southern French regions and styles. I have found so many delightful bottles of wine here over the last 5 or 6 years, and everything has been priced very reasonably. In addition to the wine and gourmet items, I have dined here a handful of times, and the light fare was delicious and refreshing. Very much a hidden gem - there is no ostentatious exterior, just a simple, unassuming little house, quite aptly named Basic Necessities.

Had a wonderful brunch experience here a few weeks ago. A true hidden gem it’s small so I’d make a reservation

Charming and delicious place to stop for lunch. Perfect, really. So good we went twice while in the area. Relaxed but friendly service, charming store with a nice selection of curated foodstuffs, and we loved the outdoor seating area. Quirky with gracious, thoughtful touches like cloth napkins and a water station. The dining room looked great, too.The online ordering system took a second to acclimate to (where you wait for a call from them to confirm), but it made getting our lunch at the time we wanted a breeze. Vegan sandwich was delicious and so different from most vegan options. Had to get it twice. Chicken salad and smoked salmon were also wonderful. Will absolutely go again the next time we are in the area.

My wife and I had lunch here and the food was excellent. The menu is simple and elegant. We had the everything sandwich and house salad, all the ingredients were fresh and very tasty. The atmosphere was light and intimate. Service was friendly and just great. Would highly recommend eating here if you are anywhere close.

Overrated. Completely. Don’t waste your time. Go to one of the fine brewerys nearby. Service was very slow. It was a special occasion for us and they knew that. I found a piece of plastic in my soup (literally chewed on it) and they didn’t even offer to comp that portion of the meal. They never came by to ask me if I wanted another glass of wine. This all being said, the fish was delicious. However I would never go back again and encourage anyone else to support other business owners with more attention to customer service.

** Sadly editing the 5-star review I posted 2 months ago to reflect my most recent experience at this establishment. **Basic Necessities should learn a thing or two about customer service before opening their doors to the public. They might also want to consider updating their business hours on google. My family made a 4 hour drive (round-trip) to enjoy lunch here, as a repeat customer, only to be turned away because their kitchen had closed for the day. The owner/manager/main lady made quite the point of gesturing around the shop and very sarcastically explaining that was what remains open until 8pm, not the restaurant. NEVER recommending this place to friends or family again.. a truly disheartening experience to be shown such little empathy and respect. I suppose, as other reviews have previously stated, you have to be of a certain demographic in order to be welcomed here. That is perfectly fine, we will take our business and loyalty where it’s actually appreciated!
