We had a stray dog show up in our driveway and after 5 days of trying to find her owner, we took her to the Dinwiddie County Animal Shelter. This facility is very nice and smells clean. You would never know there were 30+ animals there. I was told that they have an above average adoption/forever home placement rate. She was too sweet and gentle to be a hunting dog is my guess. She paid no attention to our dog and 3 cats. If you are looking for a wonderful, young, playful dog check her out. We called her Cindy.

Terrible people there!!! I asked about catch and release for feral cats near and in our property and she said just leave them alone they're just cats and can live on their own!!!! I called later for a certificate to spay a recently adopted cat and they offered a certificate for $40 off good only at Amelia Bovine Clinic and even with the certificate the cost is $204!!! Very unaffordable for a senior citizen on limited incomeThey are no help and have no hearts at all!! They should all be fired!!!

The male officer and one of the women at the front were very helpful and wonderful with the animals. We ended up adopting 2 dogs there and they were very accommodating to our requests to take the dogs out of their cages so that we could interact with them. The adoption process was also very easy and the fee was an astonishing $75 that included spay/neuter and first rounds of vaccines (including rabies). That male officer and the front office worker also seemed very knowledgeable about the animals in their care - despite most of the animals being strays and no information being provided on them. The only reason that I didn't give 5 stars is because there is a younger woman at the front who does not speak to you, acknowledge you when you walk in or stand there waiting for help. Not sure what her reasoning was for being that way, but she was the only one who did not seem to want to be of assistance or interact with the animals. I think the only time she even acted like we were there was when she came into one of the rooms with us (I honestly think to make sure we didn't stick our hands in the Cane Corso's mouth 🙄) and watch us without speaking. This seems to be a facility that does what they can with the funds they receive and some of the employees/volunteers really do seem to care for the animals there. We hope to have a long and beautiful relationship with the precious dogs we found there!

I called about a stray baby animal suffering after being hit, I was told somebody would be dispatched received a return phone call and was told because we fed it during the cold winter months when nobody would come out to it because the mother was gone that it was considered our property, and they would do nothing for it. It laid their suffering. God knows how long before we even found it they don’t care about the animals they just want to have a badge and the discounts and perks of being a county official this county use to capture street, fix them, and release them back to the colony to prevent the overpopulation that is happening, and now they sit back and do nothing but pass it onto the next person. Dinwiddie animal control is the most uncaring group of people I have ever encountered by far.. but make sure you don’t shoot the animal to end it suffering because you know that’s illegal in the county as well

This facility is home to lost pets, strays, and those waiting for a new home. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They take great care of each animal from feeding to cleaning to play and exercise. The buildings are clean and well-kept, everything in it's place. It's run by a gentleman who has high standards. These are met daily. We have been extremely impressed over the years. So much so that my granddaughter (16) is looking to volunteer here.

Adopt , don't shop! The building is always so clean and smells nice. Which tells you how well they care for the animals. The officers are all so helpful and nice.

The service here is awful. Someone had found a dog at a camp site and no animal control would come get it and she couldn’t hold the dog over night so I offered. We had already tried the number on the collar and tried to reach out on Facebook. I contacted the shelter and animal control the next morning and was in contact with an officer. The shelter was closed and I was told to call the officer she said to call when I could could bring him in. So I did she didn’t answer and I left a message and never herd back. So today since they were open I went first thing. As I walk In The lady behind the desk is talking about “Maurice “ so I said Oh you found Maurice!(the mans name on the collar) And the lady behind the desk was just plain rude and was clearly annoyed I had this dog. They’ve known I’ve had this dog and knew I was bringing it. So I’m curious why the owner wasn’t called. But any way then she asked where the dog was found and I said a camp ground. So she literally yells at me and says she needs a address so I yell back I don’t know! She huffs and rolls her eyes at me. Then after taking my information says “we’re done”I’ve never been treated so badly yet alone yelled at 2x for bringing in a dog. The dog was also skin and bones, I had removed at LEASt 20 ticks from the dog and it was covered in scratches and scabs. No concern about that though!

Absolutely do NOT bring the animal here if you want it to live!! My sister had her two cats taken here after the adoptive mother didn’t want them. THE SHELTER EUTHANIZED THEM. When my sister called to check up on them, they were not only informed that they had been put down BUT THEY WERE RUDE AND HUNG UP THE PHONE. Heartless. Gutless. BE HONEST IF YOURE A KILL SHELTER. At least he compassionate, you kill animals….

The photos speak for themselves. I’m not sure how this shelter believes that in under ten days of having these cats, they didn’t deserve to live, but don’t bring your animals here. The staff was not friendly the day we dropped them off nor the day we found out they killed them.

Wonderful staff! I rescue horses and they called me to take 3 that needed rescuing...they were there all the way and even check up on them! Horses are doing great now and have a forever home with us! Love the staff at the shelter!

Staff are friendly and good at their jobs. Animals are well cared for and every effort is made to avoid euthanization.I adopted a male hound dog that had to be put to sleep nine days later due to an unforseen medical condition. The staff worked with me and enabled me to adopt another dog without having to pay any additional fees. If I adopt any more pets it will be at this shelter.

Employees work to make the best of a bad situation for the animals. Life can be tough for these critters, and some of them have been through obviously hard times. Still, the animals are well cared for here, even with limited resources. When the shelter runs out of room, animals may be transferred to other facilities or may have to take the long walk down a short hallway. You should consider getting an animal here. You will be helping a local shelter and keeping a local animal in the local community.

They are truly concerned for the animals welfare. The chief in charge actually met me during off duty to help me and give me my dog back. A very good human being and very clean and compasionate operation.
