To begin, my wife and I didn't know what to expect with this gem along the downtown pedestrian mall in Charlottesville, but it was an intriguing concept given the counter service for ordering. We're so glad we made the decision. They were quite attentive in the sense of bringing food and drinks out right away, refilling out water carafe and engaging in conversation when that was appropriate. As you can see from my photos, there's a bit of a store concept also here with unique food and beverage related products. Because we hadn't been here before, we did opt for reservations. It is worth noting that dining at the bar in the back was another option. We both had european style sandwiches which were quite delicious and on the lighter side, which is what we wanted this particular evening. That also helped to keep the cost down. The cocktail I had was lovely as well. This was a great example of being rewarded for being open to a new experience, which is what travel is (or should be) ultimately all about. Check it out!Parking: While this is part of the pedestrian mall, there are plenty of garages and on-street parking along the outer perimeter of the mall itself. We chose to use ride-sharing, which worked very well for our purposes.

The service was stellar, the cheese selection is great, the wine/cocktail options are decent, but I think the food is largely 3/5 stars. The pickle plate is lackluster and they sell a bland salsa under the name of “a tomato and onion gazpacho”. That said, the brie, fig, and speck crostini was good. I think we just ordered the wrong things - play it safe and come for the cheese/wine.

Really nice little spot on the downtown mall. They do a happy hour from 3-6pm where there are several wines by the glass for about $6. I tried some of the cheeses, and they were great.They have numerous meats, cheeses, and food for sale there, along with a selection of wine from various parts of the world.The bar has about 8-10 seats, and there are also a few small tables. If you want to do a sandwich there for lunch you can sit at the window and watch people walk by.Only downside is on occasion you'll get a short pour (this didn't happen to me, but a friend had that happen).

Staff at Tilmans are knowledgeable and friendly. The food is excellent with fancy sandwiches but equipped with classics too like macaroni and cheese - but upscale. I got a delicious sandwich of the day with ham, a fancy salami, provolone, L&T, and a spicy aioli. PLUS the spring Asparagus soup was so good I ordered a bowl to go for dinner later! P.S. they also have a bar. Wine, beer, cocktails. And its a place to stock your picnic basket with provisions and cheeses and bread.

I’ve walked by this restaurant hundreds of times and thankfully finally stopped in last Friday for lunch. I had the avocado toast with garlic spread which was delicious. They have an excellent selection of wine but as it was lunch I didn’t get to try any this time. They also have an wonderful assortment of cheeses. Extremely vegetarian and great service!!

Everything we've tried here over the years has been super delicious. The brie, fig, and speck crostini is one of my favorite snacks/small plates of all time anywhere. There's kind of a rotating cast of sandwiches, salads, and soups and it's always tasty with super fresh tasting ingredients and great flavor combinations.

Very happy with this sister restaurant to Tonic. This is the original, I am told, and you can see “creative” is a theme. I had pimento cheese and a simple salad. Also had a Montenegro Amaro…. Another key sign for me that a restaurant is MY kind.

Had a long day of sightseeing and walking. Wanted to relax with a good glass of wine and light/small plate. stopped here and sat at the bar. The server/bartender did not know about the wine(s). I asked for a DRY white wine. After consulting with other I was given a (quarter glass) ACIDIC SWEET medicinal wine.The POUR was ridiculous. I do NOT expect wine to be poured to the rim - I know wine - but it should NOT be poured BELOW HALF. Generally, it is poured JUST ABOVE the half-way mark.They wanted $13 for this.I didn't wait for the food. I canceled the order and left. Found another place nearby with GOOD WINE, GOOD POUR and knowledgeable servers.

Great place, great people who run this restaurant, I highly recommend it! They have a great food selection and great coffee, too! (I don't drink alcohol so I can't comment on the wine selection -- but I've heard from others that it is excellent, too!)

I had the sandwich of the day and a side salad. Salad was simple and delicious (huge portion). The prosciutto sandwich felt like one I would buy in a European capital. Nice portion size, quite tasty. Service was pleasant and efficient. Great interior decor, suitable for quick take out or a nice sit down meal. I look forward to trying out the wine bar!

Came here with the girlfriend for a quick glass of wine before dinner at a nearby burger joint. We got a few samples, staff was super friendly, and they had a decent wine selection. The snacks seem quite cheap as well. Would definitely recommend!

This is a great spot for a nice lunch in Cville! I had the lentil salad, and my friend tried a sandwich with the tomato soup. We split a cheese board with wine as well, and we were very pleased! The service was awesome and the ambiance was really nice. The only issue was allergy accommodations. I asked if they could switch some of the bread on our cheese board for vegetables or fruit since I have allergies, and they refused. It was pretty disappointing. Otherwise it was a great meal!

My fiance and I love getting sandwiches to go from Tilman’s to bring to Shenandoah on our hikes. Sometimes we like to eat at Tilman’s and sit outside on the patio in the downtown mall. Overall the workers are super friendly and the food is really good and fresh! We always find ourselves coming back!

Amazing late lunch with a superb atmosphere. The staff is warm and knowlegable and the menu is extensive considering the size of the establishment. They are flexible with some menu options; in this instance, my companion is vegan and the staff made suggestions for what could be tailored to suit his diet - tough for a cheese shop but they did it. I wish we didn’t live so far away or we would be back more often for great drinks and fine company.

I was excited about this new wine bar. The atmosphere is nice. But the Acoustics make it incredibly loud even if there are only a few other people.I just tried it for the second time because the first time left a bit to be desired. Thought I'd give it a second chance. I won't be back.Service is mostly non-existent. And the bartender told us at 6 pm, "we were thinking of staying open all night, but we've decided to focus on a private party we're having. So we're giving last call." He disappeared never came back. The manager or the owner came over to pick up our check for payment. She didn't apologize, didn't smile, didn't interact didn't invite us back Etc.Disappointed.

Comprehensive menu with so many wonderful dishes to choose from that you need a good literal 15 minutes to decide. Wish I could've ordered the entire menu. Their decor is cute, with a wine wall and staff recommendations.

I’ve always enjoyed my food at Tillman‘s and make it a point to visit when I’m in the area. I love their unique pairings and the wines are fun. Wish I lived closer.

Was a unique and cute place. Service very friendly. However the food was not impressive. The only thing we liked was the Brie, Fig and Speck Crostini. The meatballs and the Italian Pork Panini were both very dry.

Love this place! A friend of mine and I did a wine and cheese tasting here and had a blast! My office even orders lunch from here, it's a great place and is in wonderful location on the Downtown Mall! Can't wait for their next wine event!

Tilman's is a cheese and wine bar in the historic downtown mall and the only one of its type nearby. The front of the shop has a few seats and wine and cheese for sale for people who come in and out. The back has a bar and tables for dining.My wife and I opted for the front tables since we had our 20-month-old (and it fit a high chair). You order up front and they deliver the food to your table.The food itself was good. My wife ordered the Greek salad and I the fig panini. Both were flavorful. Our baby had the kids grilled cheese and fruit and enjoyed it. The pickle plate we started with and it comes with pickled pickles, beets, and asparagus.We both had drinks and this is where they lacked. My sangria looked beautiful, but was bitter.If you want cheese and wine, Tilman's is a worthy contender in Charlottesville.
