I grew up in those mountains so a bit biased, but it’s a beautiful Park that sits on top of the mountains and is shared by two states (VA/KY). It’s one of only two Interstate Parks in the country, (the other being NY/NJ, I think). The Breaks boasts a rich history and it has breathtaking scenic overlooks, multiple hiking trails, a beautiful lake, camping, lodges, cabins, a country themed restaurant, and plenty of areas to picnic. Zip lining- we did that a couple summers ago and it was an amazing experience! The staff are friendly, and helpful and dedicated to keeping the Park beautiful. They always have been loyal to the Parks care. It’s peaceful. Once I was hiking on Laurel Branch Trail and everything that was quiet became suddenly loud with what I thought was a bee swarm, lol, when I began looking from side to side to locate the source of the buzzing, I was STUNNED to see multiples of hummingbirds swarming the Rhododendron and Laurels that were blossoming along the trail side. It was magnificent! Great for couple getaway’s, personal space, and very family friendly too! Go- you’ll be surrounded by it’s rich Appalachian history and it’s truly a bit of heaven on earth.Playground: There are a couple designated playgrounds out in the park, more within the camping areas they all spacious with access to picnic areas and restrooms.Restrooms: Clean and well maintained.Dog-friendliness: One cabin does allow pets, I was told. Nice place to drive up and take the dog walking on any of the multiple trails.Picnic area: Multiple, well kept and all beautifully located.

We have enjoyed everything here. The rooms are basic, but clean. The park is very dog friendly and it was nice to see everyone walking their dogs and enjoying the trails The staff here is great and very friendly. We had a family reunion here and the staff was very nice and great at there jobs. The buffet was always full and they cleared plates from the tables quickly and efficiently. The restaurant has a breakfast and dinner buffet which we enjoyed very much. The trails are nice and the views are amazing! We also took the zip line your and the young men were very nice and patient. Very knowledgeable as well. We stopped by the water park as well and the staff there was very nice. The park is very kid friendly with slides and a lazy river. It was an amazing trip and we look forward to coming back.Playground: The playground was clean and everything was working in proper order.Dog-friendliness: It was nice to see dog poop bag stations around just in case you needed a bag. My dog loved the trails!

Gorgeous park with stunning views and great amenities. I’ve gone two years in a row for the Central Appalachian Mycological Society’s annual foray that they host. I camp at a primitive spot in the B Loop. Bathrooms are clean, and the campsites have fire rings with grill grates and picnic tables.

This park is gorgeous. Although it's well off the beaten path, it is absolutely worth the drive. Definitely make sure to get gas before you hit some of the smaller roads, though, as you don't have too many options the closer you get to the park (coming from Virginia). At the park itself, there are plenty of things to do and see. The main attraction is probably the gorge overlook, which is a fairly short but slightly hilly walk from the restaurant. There are plenty of other hiking trails, though, ranging from mild to strenuous. Other amenities included ziplining, a pool/waterpark area, picnic tables, and places to stay--hotel and camping spots. Everything was clean and well taken care of. We especially enjoyed lunch at the restaurant which overlooked the gorge as well. Our meal was excellent and moderately priced, with plenty to choose from on the menu. We had great service, as well. There is also a gift shop and an accessible restroom attached to the restaurant, which was very convenient.Restrooms: Accessible restrooms located in the restaurant/gift shop.

Absolutely loved our trip! We came specifically to go on the elk tour, which was fabulous. Avery is a great tour guide and leaves ample time to get out of the bus and take photos and enjoy the elk. We also enjoyed quite a bit of hiking! We thought the trails were well marked and lots of options for all skill levels. The restaurant breakfast was good with generous portions and a great view. Staff was all super friendly and helpful for all of our 1000 questions. Bathrooms were always clean too!! We hope to be back soon.

Great interstate park, beautiful views in the summer and fall, and I'm sure in the winter as well. The mountains are worth the drive down, Elkhorn city is right down the road as well, a nice little Appalachian city. Haysi is also 2 miles from breaks park. I love coming here. Thanks to the great staff who manage the park it is always clean and well kept.

This place is amazing! I can't believe I'm just now hearing about it. We did some awesome hiking and fishing! The lookouts were awesome. I did almost step on three different copperheads tho be careful! The visitors center had some nice t shirts and the typical park stuff. It's a very well-kept park. I can't wait to come back.

4.5 Stars hereThe park was clean, but in need of some necessary repairs. Some lots had water runoff issues and some overlooks were missing handrails. Our camping experience was peaceful and quiet. It definitely didn't seem like peak summertime. At one point, we were the only camper in Campground C.We hiked most of the trails during our stay. 13.36 miles over 3 different days. The trails were in good condition with a little trash and broken glass in places. Hiking boots and walking sticks are definitely recommended.Prospectors Trail was our favorite.T- Mobile cell service works here.

My wife, my nieces, and I stayed at the campground. We were at campsite 88, which is right next to the playground at Campsite D. It was perfect for my nieces. They were able to play on the playground while my wife and I started the fire in the fire ring and cooked. There is plenty to do at the breaks from swimming and relaxing in the pool/ lazy river, renting paddle boats or canoes, renting electric bikes, walking trails, and fishing to name a few. The price was not bad. We paid right at 100 dollars for the campsite with electric hook up and water for 4 nights. All campsites can be used as a primitive camping site with a tent, or you can bring a camper. There are bathrooms and showers located on site. The staff was friendly and very helpful. At one point, our car battery died. We called the park and asked if a ranger could help. In 15 minutes, a ranger came with a boosterbox and gave us a jump. We had fun and will likely go back!Playground: Was clean and perfect for the kids to play on while you cook.Restrooms: They were clean and well kept.Dog-friendliness: You van bring your dogs

This park is absolutely one of the best if you’re craving gorgeous views, especially this time of the year. Check out the hiking trails and the delicious food in the Rhododendron Restaurant.

The opulence of nature is at its peak. The suite at redbud lodge has all the amenities to ask for, kitchenette, also a jacuzzi. One can have a quiet sunset viewing at the state scenic overlook. Also there are different hiking trails, tried the tunnel overlook, and deer pond. Fortunate to catch up on the rhododendron’s and laurels on the way. The best part is the elk tours that happen each weekend. Meal changing options available at the tour and the food is good for the price of the ticket. Also, should try on the rhododendron restaurant, a great pleasure for nature viewing while eating. The breakfast platter was also delectable. An overall pleasant stay for the weekend.

Beautiful! I recommend the geographic trail if you like crawling/squeezing through huge bolders and exploring caves. 3 cool caves right off of this trail. Be careful though, some of the majestic overlooks would be a far fall.

Lodging was clean and staff very friendly. Definitely get out on the trails. Bring snacks as you will have limited food choices. Elkhorn, KY is an easy 9 min drive should you need beverages or something from the Dollar General or Double Kwik (gas/ convenience).

Beautiful treasure in Southwest Virginia! Gorgeous views, hiking and biking trails, camping, pool complex with water features, lake, cabins, and more! This is a great three-season park for friends, families, couples, and all outdoor lovers, with clean lodging on-site. Lodge rooms include fridges for handy meals and drinks. The elk tour is a must do! Such majestic creatures!

We had a awesome time such a beautiful place to be. Got to enjoy the peaceful nature since our TV and shower didn't work and there's a piece of metal flapping on the roof in the wind. But in their defense it was the first day of opening that building and we didn't have reservations. We saw it's view and went and asked to stay there. Again I loved it and highly recommend going there. I'll reserve the same room LoL for everyone who's wondering. The bathtub worked.

We got a camping site and went rock climbing here. Absolutely fantastic. The bathrooms were within walking distance from our camping site and it was easy to navigate. It was also really quite at night which I appreciate. The climbing was so good, we will be back. Probably for some winter climbing since all the routes get good sun.We also ate breakfast at the restaurant and everyone enjoyed their meals!

We camped , hiked, and went on the elk tour - everything was great. The campsites were uncrowded, with fire ring/grill and picnic table - and the showers even had warm water! There were plenty of hiking trails for us, with various levels of difficulty. The elk tour was also a hit with the family. We didn't eat at the restaurant, but they made the picnic meal for the elk tour, and the food was delicious.

9/2023: Surprisingly disappointed by the elk tours. Was very pleased by the customer service when they changed the bus meeting location an hour before the tour, though the event causing the change seemed huge and likely known about well in advance.Left the park around 5:30, drove 30 minutes to pick up guests at another private store, then another 30 minutes to the Elk Conservation area. First stop was more historical, to see where they first released the elk, and second stop was for the boxed meal. We didn’t set off to actually see any elk until 7:30 as the sun was setting, and the best we got was looking a hill at them, super far away. The guide, Avery, was super friendly and informative and clearly loves his job, but this might have been worth the $35 tickets but certainly not our 8 hour drive each way. I strongly don’t recommend unless you’re staying in the area anyway.

We stayed Thursday through Monday morning. The restaurant was good, staff at the restaurant, desk and hotel all fantastic and super helpful. For them, I'd give 5 stars. View from room, 5 stars. HOWEVER, our room smelled so musky when we arrived that we asked the desk for air freshener, which they did have. I actually bought a candle the next day. There were stains on the carpet, including an iron burn. How?? We tried to leave our patio door open only to wake in the middle of the night to the smell of pot so heavy I thought the neighbors were having a bon fire with it. Our room was about 6 down from my mom and aunt. Their room had been completely remodeled, sliding glass doors, ample counter space. 5 stars. I'm just being honest.Playground: Several in park.Restrooms: Public restrooms. Average for a park. Nice clean ones in main building.Dog-friendliness: Some rooms are.Picnic area: Several locations, some are very old and need repair.

I loved it there. The park was mostly empty after the weekend. Super peaceful, and the trails were beautiful. The lake is tiny, though. There are lots of spiders (if that's a phobia of yours, I don't recommend going until it gets cold). My dog had a great time. We got to eat on the patio at the restaurant since he couldn't go inside. Campground hosts and staff were very nice.
