We adopted Rosemary almost two weeks ago! We had a great experience with HSAC! We went to meet some kittens, and I briefly explained what we were looking for, and as soon as we met miss Rosemary we knew she was the one! We came back a few days later to pick her up and they sent us home with a bag full of food and toys! Rosemary made herself right at home and is exactly what we were looking for, we are so happy to have her as a part of our family!

Extremely friendly staff and very clean facility! The staff was so honest they even let us know that our kitten "Boots" has a slight mental disability before we took him home. We couldn't be happier with the newest addition to our family! Thank you all for the amazing job you do to make sure forever homes are found❤️

Went for Santa Paws pics. Great opportunity for dogs and pet owners to socialize. Santa was friendly and great with our puppy! The event allowed you to make paw print ornaments and even had doggie biscuits and cream! We did not find the staff friendly or welcoming.

I have never been treated so horribly. I came in prepared to pay and have only recently moved here. When I found a kitten I wanted I was told it still needed rabies shots and couldn't be done until Monday. I was told Monday they would call me when I could pick up debutante and when I got back to my car I received an email denying my application. Highly unprofessional and judgemental.

Adopted Snow White yesterday!Found her on petfinder and fairly quickly put in an application. We didn't get a call or follow-up from them, so make sure to be proactive on that front.Walking in, the staff was very friendly. We took our time playing with Snow White (and some of the other kitties in the room) and made sure it was a fit. Pets seemed friendly, well cared for, and most of them were excited for play. They sent us home with a bag full of toys, food, and treats, and they gave us a towel and a blanket for her carrier! She's still adjusting to the new environment of course, but nonetheless likes her brush and wants nothing more than to cozy up against the nearest person. Will certainly donate to this shelter in the future. Thanks for all that you do!

Came out for the low cost shot clinic. It filled up fast, definitely a great service should be done more often!! Would be nice if they'd update to take cards too. But, got all my critters hooked up with shots, I was very early so I got out quick, if you come out to the next one, be early!! It's definitely worth it to protect your fur kids!!!

Public intake shelter devoted to placing as many adoptable animals as possible. These are devoted animal lovers who advocate for the animals in the county. I work with them through rescue and can't speak highly enough of their commitment to the animals.

Tried to adopt a cat from them at petsense, I was looking for an ESA for my ADHD. I visited Beta and hung out wit him for two hours and felt a connection. Beta was a perfect fit and they said the other applicant had not shown up and I was allowed to put an application in. Never got a call, so I called petsense and they said that the other applicant picked him up late and that they tried to tell them that someone else had put an application in for him. They didn’t care and took him despite petsense trying to fight it. Petsense did not know that the other people had until Friday to get him. Amherst humane society was supposed to give me a courtesy call, but failed to do so. Beta would have been a perfect ESA cat, but the search continues and not in Amherst. Petsense has helped me with further shelter suggestions. Petsense is not happy at all about the situation. Also Amherst doesn’t answer their phone either. Try Bedford humane society or even the central Virginia animal rescue.

They would not answer the phones for 3 months and I called every single day, they would not let me adopt back MY OWN cat back because it was going to the same address. I have currently moved and 3 months later they pick up the phone for the first time in months to tell me my cat has been adopted by someone else. They have not worked with me in any way to let me get back my own cat. They are so disrespectful. Would not recommend this to anyone go to Lynchburg Humane.

They are always striving to help the animals and humans in our community. The love and attention to each and every need is felt throughout the building. Constantly working towards better within the building and community.

I worked at a humane shelter years ago in TN, & over the past years of my life have worked closely with shelters in 7 states & many towns. This Humane Shelter is amazing. The workers were knowledgeable and caring. The building was clean and odor free. The animals looked well fed, well cared for and not near as stressed as I've seen in other shelters. Shannon Jones must be doing amazing work here & seemed on top of her job. Got 2 adult cats for my mom who had been there some time because the staff believed strongly they should remain together & they were right. Their adjustment into mom's home has been seamless because this shelter staff made the right call re:their emotional needs. Top notch!

I want to thank all the staff at Humane Society of Amherst for helping me fill an empty spot in my heart and life (and those of my two older rescue dogs).Having lost my sweet little rat terrier/chihuahua last summer, I'd been looking for a younger, small, female dog to become part of our pack. I was in Virginia for an extended business activity when I noticed the Animal Shelter sign on the highway. I went online, just to see what dogs were available, and found a beautiful, four- to five-year-old miniature pinscher female, marked "Urgent." The next day I drove the few miles to the shelter (one of the nicest facilities I've ever visited, by the way) and met the little character that apparently no one had wanted in the nearly three months she had been there. I have a Min Pin, so knew what to expect from the breed (wary of strangers, sometimes aggressive, bossy little things). Somehow we clicked right away (she jumped into my lap and licked my face), and four days later (after some extra help on the part of the staff to have her spayed and ready), I came home to Kentucky with my new little friend.Everything about my adoption went as smoothly as possible. In addition, I was welcomed for several visits I made to ensure that my new girl would know me when we had to drive several hours, and I was made comfortable with her in a private room. Every effort was made to assist me in this definitely out-of-the-ordinary adoption. I am very grateful to the staff at this shelter. This little girl is beautiful, polite, and friendly. My two older dogs were not quite sure what to think, but after only a few days, our small pack has settled into what I believe will be beneficial relationships for all involved.Thank you!

All animals need a little Christmas,I brought in a lot of different items for the dogs and cats for Christmas, toys, beds, treats, large bags of cat and dog food. The 2 women there at the time seemed uninterested, but the main reason i'm posting is the comment from one of the girls, her statement was, " I wish we could just put a closed sign on the door " Really? Saying this as a donor is bringing in Christmas for the homeless animals? Nobody asked you to work or donate your time. Now I'm wondering if the animals ever got toys or treats. May have to find another humane society to donate to. So sad

We looked at several shelters to find our new dog, and Amherst is one of the absolute best! I called first and asked about a specific dog. Peggy was so helpful! When I came to meet the dog, the staff was fantastic, answered all of my questions, and was very attentive. There was a bit of a time crunch on the adoption, so Peggy called our landlord right away-- before I was even out of the parking lot-- to make sure our application would be processed in time. We picked up our puppy today after she was spayed by the local vet. We could not be more thrilled with the newest member of our family, and it is all thanks to the wonderful staff here!

Not a good experience at all. Went there to adopt 2 kittens and was treated like I was bothering the woman in charge. She was no help at all. I was promised a return phone call and almost 1 month later-never received that call. Went to Almost Home in Nelson County and got the help I needed and was able to adopt 2 kittens. Was given the help I needed along with the person in charge actually loving her job and grateful I wanted to adopt the kittens.

We adopted a hound about a year ago and we had been given the go ahead to adopt . We went to pick her up from the vet after being spade to find us being charged an extra fee because she was pregnant. We didnt know anything about her being pregnant. So I strongly recommend adopting a dog from a other facility

My daughter's and myself went to look at the dogs and when we got there they had locked the doors 40 minutes early. The workers were still inside and seen us at the door confused but not one took the time to come to the door to even try and explain. There was another man and his two sons who arrived before we left and couldn't understand why the doors were locked. My guess was that they just decided to close early. If they want the animals adopted then they should be open when they say there open!!

Do not go here. The lady in charge is a joke. Did not help at all, she was very rude, sarcastic, and bitter. Based upon other reviews, people know this Humane Society is terrible also. Go to Lynchburg Humane Society where they are nicer. Amherst one is TERRIBLE. This place needs to be shut down or the lady needs to be fired. That simple.

We just adopted Charlie, a shephard mix on Dec. 10. The staff was wonderful to us, answered our questions about Charlie, and we brought our other babies in fur with us, so to make sure they all would get along. It worked out and brought him home. God bless these people for taking care of the animals they have and trying to find them good homes. I guess you can say, my husband, Al and I are Charlie's Angels in giving him a good home. He has adjusted well and he is my shadow, when I am home, following me around the house. The day we brought him home, thanks to the staff working with him, I was able to let him go without the leash, outside, do his business and get him used to his new home. He was an abused dog, and still needs the reassurance, we will not hurt him in any way and I believe he knows that.

I do an animal unit at my school with all of the students. They have done a wonderful job of working with me to promote responsible pet ownership. The staff here makes it "real" for the students and they look forward to it every year. Thank you!
