I can’t begin to thank this wonderful humane society enough! Erika Holm and Jeanine Lorusso were absolutely wonderful to us! They helped my 5 yr old Boxer with his reactivity after he was attacked by another strange dog. With their help; we were able to unite all 3 of our dogs together. (We adopted a female boxer last July. These folks devote their lives to helping all kinds of animals, big and small. They’re a wealth of information and they’re so genuine and kind! We’re so fortunate to have them as our neighbors here in Central, Vt.If you need anything or are having any issues with your dog, please reach out to them. We spent so much $$ with other trainers from Northfield to Jeffersonville doing board and trains, etc. All the help we needed was right here!Thank you so much for everything! We’re so incredibly grateful!!

The facility itself is nice, and most of the workers are friendly. The animals are well cared for, and have plenty of visitors giving them a lot of love. This guy is chilling, looking out into the kitty patio. Not so bad!I do think the cost of adoption is a bit high, as compared to other places where I've gotten my pets before. They do seem to still be able to move animals through pretty quickly anyway.Good place to go love on some kittens.

Puppy kindergarten with Llyr Lauderbeck was really fantastic and so helpful for us with a new pup. I highly recommend the class and any class with Llyr!

We reached out to adopt Jackson, a Bernese Mountain Dog, to replace ours who died in December. We were told they only do adoptions by appointment for specific dogs. There were two people ahead of us, and both of them passed on him, so we were next. We made an appointment for 2pm on Saturday, which was the first available appointment. We rearranged our entire day to make this happen. We bought him toys, a bowl, a leash, got the house ready for our new family member who we were already in love with.At 11 am on Saturday, they called and told us they adopted him out to another couple who was there for a completely different dog. I hope Jackson has a wonderful home and good life. But he should have been here with us. What’s the point of forcing people to make appointments and get their hopes up only to adopt the dog out from under them without warning? Such a shorty, unethical thing to do.To all potential adopters here, if you have a specific dog you want to adopt, make the first appointment you can for ANY dog and just choose a different one later. Apparently that’s the only way to ensure your heart is trampled on by these people.

Staff really care about their animals and want them to go to a home that is best for them. Animals come to you spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, free of fleas, with 1 month of pet insurance and a microchip. My pup even has a 6 week training class. Note that you should arrive at least 1 hour before close and fill out an application ahead of you want to meet a dog, and it helps to call ahead. Also they do not provide collars/leashes free but you can buy them. Thank you CVHS!

CVHS staff is fantastic, hard working, and compassionate! The service they provide to the community is second to none.

They make you set an appointment to meet a specific animal but they don’t tell you anyone can adopt it out from under you before your appointment. We were on a wait list for a specific dog, our day came and they called just before our appointment to say someone came in for a different dog but to wanted the one we were supposed to be adopting instead and took him. They should have gone to the end of the wait list. Not the fault of the adopters, it’s a complete unethical move on the part of the staff.

We applied for a dog on their website on a Tuesday and they called us back the next day to book for Saturday morning to meet the dog. We would've loved an appt earlier in the week if they'd had one, but we were given Saturday morning. They called us today, Friday, at 4pm to tell us that the dog had been adopted today. We are absolutely heartbroken because we had planned on the appt on Saturday and hoped that it would work out. The demeanor of the person who called us was horrible at best. She was incredibly rude and insensitive, a real jerk. Save yourself the heartbreak, and headache: GO TO ANOTHER SHELTER!!!

Don’t bother with this place if you actually want to adopt a dog. Looking at the other reviews it seems these scam artists do the bait and switch quite often. Calling hours before an appointment to tell you that the dog you were going to see was adopted.I have never seen such disgusting business practices by any shelter. Stay away from this place.

This shelter sucks!! They don't help and worse completely ignore outdoor cats. The staff needs serious training on the importance of TNR and you NEVER re-release kittens. They can be socialized. How sad they are to be so ignorant. Need help?? Contact Alley Cat Allies and they will direct you. Ignoring a problem doesn't fix it! Also, no reason they don't offer low cost spay/neuter clinics. Plenty of vets willing to do it!

Adopted a cat here and nobody is allowed inside due to Covid so unfortunately I never got to see this awesome cat room everybody speaks of but the adoption process was pretty straight forward.I could tell that they really know all of the animals there. Over the phone they matched us with a wonderful sweet cat that fits into our family perfectly. He has adjusted well and just such a pleasure to have him. Great with my kids and with my other cat as well. I couldn’t ask for a better cat.

I have never been more disappointed in an organization in my life. This humane society allowed me to adopt a cat under false pretenses, claiming that her disability (she came to me with a head tilt) was the result of “abuse” she had experienced at a former residence. They told me she had been kicked in the head, but has since fully healed from the injury, having a head tilt as a result. I adopted her and fell in love with her. I took her to a general practitioner for a regular check up and they informed me that she had not one, but two ear tumors, one in each ear. Not only is this the actual cause of her head tilt, but it requires intensive surgical removal, costing me upwards of $10k after taking her to a referral center for treatment. After reviewing her paperwork from CVHS, it became apparent to me that she was seen by a CVHS doctor and treated for ear infections that are a symptom of this issue. There is no doubt in my mind that their doctor should have been able to see the issue during that time. After contacting them regarding the issue, they were extremely rude and implied blame on myself for not obtaining pet insurance. I am now scrambling to obtain the funds I need to pay for my Helen’s surgery, anticipating to be thousands of dollars in debt. I am floored by CVHS’s lack of professionalism, inadequate medical treatment of their animals, and their misinformation regarding the animals they are adopting out. Please do not adopt from here.

I have 2 rescues from them. Easy adoption and they are fixed, chipped, etc. You do get a great deal and save a pet. They should listen to the customers a little more as I did try and adopt one and she was mean. And I knew she was a one cat only , from the moment I brought her inside. I brought her back and told them. She said, I didn't give it enough time and it was my cats. I know cats too. So, she was adopted to be brought back again. If they had listened , could of spared her going through that.

About once a week I take a mental health day and simple do things that I feel like doing in the moment. Last Thursday, as I was leaving Barre, I decided to pop into the Humane Society; because let's face it, cats boost morale!About two or so months ago I was given a cat to re-home because the owners couldn't take care of her, so as I was there looking at the cats and giving them attention, I figured I'd keep in mind that my cat would want a play companion, so I talked with Jess, one of the employees, about adoption.Jess was very helpful and a pleasure to talk with. She informed me that it was same day adoption, and I was thrilled. Which made adopting a second cat more appealing; as I've had terrible, lengthy, adoption experiences before, which didn't end well. CVHS was a breath of kindness compared to other facilities I've been to in the area.As I visited 5 of the 6 cat rooms, I was pleased to see such a clean facility. There were enough litter boxes for all the cats it each room, toys, places to climb and hide, and fresh food and water. After more conversation and returning to the cat rooms 3 times, I went home with the biggest dude there, Brando!!Overall. Great visit. Great faculty and staff. Brando has had a good adjustment into his new home, and with my current cat, Cleo. After two whole days he's lounging, cuddling, and is now a member at my vets office. Thanks, CVHC!!

We adopted our Buddy from this wonderful place. We are in love with him. The fee is so worth all that they do for the dog. They even helped us with a few questions we had. They really care about the animals they bvb take in.

I have adopted two cats from this location. Their staff is friendly, the cat enclosures are nicely done. I felt well taken care off and all animals are well taken care off individually. A lot of love here!

We adopted six-year-old cat, Legend. She now goes by Sheba, which she feels is more suitable. From the get go, Sheba was relaxed and happy to be with us. We know this because, being a competent conversationalist, Sheba has made it quite clear. What a special environment the animals at the shelter have. They are cared for by skilled, caring admirers – the staff – both paid and volunteer.Give yourself and your kids a treat – visit the shelter and have a swell time interacting with the critters who are also free to interact with one another.Cats and dogs enjoy separate, but open spaces. What a terrific concept to encourage socialization! We’re so grateful for our new family member.Lynn, Kit and Sheba Gage ♥️

My cats were stolen and this place adopted them out. They fixed and chipped my female cats and sold them back to me. My two male cats were adopted in late November of this year. The humane society knows they are my cats and still continues with their adoption. My kids are heartbroken. I guess anything for $500 bucks right!

It has been several months since we adopted 2 kittens from CVHS. We called about one kitten and came home with 2! They are such a joy to us. Tomorrow 8/19 our babies will be 1 year old. We love every moment with them.

Friendly, helpful, and caring staff. Doing their best to work safely during COVID. All adoptions take place without entering building, after a scheduled phone interview to match adopter with the best pet for them.

Got my fiance's cat here. The people were very helpful and positive. The shelter was clean and with no heavy odors. They helped me through the entire process in less than three hours, half of which was me trying to decide which cat to get. Overall a great place to go to look for an extra family addition.

Very unprofessional. I called looking to adopt a dog into my very loving home and they were very rude to me. They do not handle customer service very well. I'm not sure who I spoke with first, but I got a hold of a woman named Chris the second time, and both woman were very rude. I am looking for a dog and a sweet kitty to adopt and I will certainly never go to central Vermont humane society.

Dedicated and thoughtful staff. A wonderful shelter with a wide range of services in addition to companion animal adoption. I am currently enrolled in a Good Manners class with a newly adopted dog. Very helpful instruction.

This organization decided that it was okay to give my personal contact information to a complete stranger after I reached out to them. I would strongly recommend driving to a different county for services, like Homeward Bound in Addison County. Absolutely appalled that an organization would do that. Avoid them at all costs.

Great shelter! The animals there are well-cared and the staff is kind and informative. I went there the other day for a rabies vaccination event and the staff was kind enough to let me wait in my car with my loudmouth hyperactive hound and come get me after other clients and their animals were gone to avoid what would have otherwise been a total mess.

So I brought a mama cat up that was due to have babies who had been living outside. They promised to find a foster home till the babies were ready to be weened. One week later she's been spayed and is ready for adoption. So I'll let you use your imagination on what happened to the unborn kittens. Very deceitful. Next time I'll stick with random rescue!!!! Very discouraging!!!

Thank you for all you do for the fur babies out there that have no one to love. CVHS is clean (no 'kennel smell'), welcoming and its new location is perfect. There is a great walking trail right across the street that seems like it would be perfect for volunteers (always needed) to take the pups for a stroll.

My son volunteered at the shelter. I was very impressed with the training they provide (I sat in on it.) He really enjoyed his time there and went on to college for Vet Tech. He got his start by volunteering.
