Horse-drawn carriage rides right outside of the Next Chapter Bookstore. Part of the holiday celebration! I wish I had taken a picture of the stores’ mascot > Gracie. She is the best, most friendliest dog. I love children’s books and would have liked to see a bigger selection but other than that, a top notch bookstore with extremely warm and friend staff (including Gracie).

I stopped in and was greeted by the owner both human and doggo. Very nice. Did not buy anything, the few books I was looking for were not there. The owner asked if she could order them for me but I didn't live local. Truly worth the visit.

When we travel, we enjoy supporting independent book stores. We are always pleased with the personalized service and the unique charm of each store... However, in this case, we didn't even have the opportunity to see the charm. The woman who was behind the counter was less than pleasant. When Wife#1 asked if there was an available rest room, the woman was quite rude. There was clearly a bathroom in the children's section of the store. I'm not sure why we were not allowed to use it. We would have stayed to browse and would have, more than likely, made a purchase; but we chose, instead, to move on...

Not open during published hours. I’m attempting to complete the Vermont indie bookstore challenge and the hours at this store are very difficult for someone like me who lives out of state. I’ve been trying to get here for 2 years. I finally drove over an hour out of my way to get here and when I finally found it (the sign is very small and it’s in the back of a parking lot), the store wasn’t even open. The store shares a building with a coffee shop and the workers there said this was normal. I’m all for shopping local, but don’t this store shouldn’t be included in the challenge if it can’t keep consistent hours.

Cynthia and Next Chapter have been a great source for my book needs during the pandemic. I am able to order online and pick up my purchases from the store. Cynthia has always been super friendly and helpful. Support your local bookstore!

The worst customer service I have ever experienced. I attempted to call to check on an order that had been placed over a month ago and apparently my cellphone came up as spam risk on her caller ID so rather than let me explain why I was calling she proceeded to scream at me that I was spam risk and she was not talking to me and then proceeded to hang up. I tried to call back several times and she would pick up the phone and slam it down. I ended up leaving my office to go to the store in person. Once on-site the owner was all giggly like hanging up on a customer was funny. She made all sorts of excuses as to why it took so long to get the book when in fact she waited to place the order until she had enough to get free shipping. I will never patronize this establishment again and will be sure to let others know

Next Chapter Bookstore is by far the nicest book shop in the area. Cynthia and her staff are so helpful in assisting you with finding the perfect book. And if by some chance they do not have it in stock, they get it shipped to the store for you super-fast at no extra cost. And after you are done getting your new book, you can stop in for a Bagel next door!

I've had a dismal experience on the customer service side of this bookstore.I mistakenly ordered a book from Next Chapter in early June. I meant to order from a store of the same name in St. Paul, MN. After a little phone tag, I was able to get in touch with the owner and we arranged for the book to be shipped to me...Fast forward to a month and a half later, the book still hasn't arrived and none of my messages have been returned.As a former bookseller and current indie bookstore patron, this really bums me out. No book, no refund, and no communication. This review is the LAST chapter in my attempt to understand what the hell happened. For your money, patronize Next Chapter in Barre, VT in-person. If something goes wrong with your shipped order, they will leave you high and dry.

I had such a positive, upbeat exchange with owner Cynthia D that I’m writing to say that a short visit to Next Chapter may improve your whole day. NC has a discerning selection of a wide range of books. In my far flung conversation with the owner, we hopscotched enthusiastically from author to author. I bought Anthony Doerr’s new book, two New Yorker 500-piece puzzles, Peter Miller’s VERMONT PEOPLE photo album, and a satirical greeting card. I’ll return to conclude our fun, appreciative conversation about Logger personality Rusty DeWees and cartoonist extraordinaire Jeff Danziger. Five Stars. Don Hooper, Brookfield, VT

I am thankful to Cynthia at Next Chapter. I order books for school and home use. My questions are always answered quickly, books are ordered if not in stock and they arrive just when Cynthia says they will. I also love their note cards and stationary!

Went into the store recently to see if they had a book I wanted.. They didn't have it in the store but the woman at the desk told me that she could order it online and it would be in the following Friday.. The book I ordered was The Wiccan Bible. I called the store that following Friday and my book wasn't in yet. I waited a few days and then went down to the book store to see if my book was in.. The owner of the store told me that my book wouldn't be in until she got an order of 15 of the same books, so she could get free shipping... I have never heard in my life about this sort of rule in a book store... I waited another couple of days then I sent my boyfriend down to get my money back. Had the sales slip proving I paid for the book, he went in to get my money back. The daughter of the owner of this book store said that they didn't give refunds, I could only have store credit. My opinion if this woman continues to run this book store in an unfair way then her business will not last long in this town.

I started to do some shopping there and set aside a card to purchase while I continued to browse. I asked the shop owner if I could use the restroom. She told me I wild have to go next door to the bagel shop or to the shops on the other side of the store. The bagel shop was closed and the other restrooms were locked with signs that the were only available for customers of those stores I had to then leave and find another place to use a restroom. I will not go back to that book store. After reading the other review, it is clear that the owner is not service oriented. I will advise my friends to avoid going there.

Drove an hour to visit this store to support an independent bookstore in VT as my gf and I are making efforts to visit every one in VT. Had a hard time finding it and then when we did there was just a sign saying they went to the beach and to order online. Might try to visit again but not a great first impression.

I love that the bookstore is run by local people who are passionate about what they do. Staff are always helpful and friendly. I also enjoy that the bookstore is friendly to a range of ages :-)
