Found out there was no water after we got there. Luckily, we were in a trailer with our own water supply. Beautiful green and healthy forest. Big pines and quakies. The sites are spaced apart, so you don't feel like you're camping on top of each other. The roads are narrow, and some of the turns are difficult for larger trailers. But the scenery made up for a lot.

This is a great place to go for an overnight car camp trip, or stay for maybe even a couple nights or so. The campgrounds were very clean, and very well-maintained, and the staff was very kind and helpful as well. The price to camp per night was very inexpensive and hassle-free. The camp attendant drives by every hour or so to check on new campers, and collect the payment. I think we paid around $40 for two nights. Only cash is accepted so go to an ATM before you leave. We had a really fun time, it was so peaceful, not too packed or overcrowded, and the views were really beautiful. Surprisingly, even though we went in August, it was still very cold from about 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. Definitely dress warm for the evenings, and bring some layers.

What a beautiful campground. The staff and managers were amazingly nice. They were very helpful and honestly wanted to make sure your stay was top notch. We did experience lots of flies like other posters. Flushing toilets are super nice! I only know of Spruces campground and this one in Utah that has flushing toilets. Bring your bug spray!

We love camping here! This campground is so pretty. Lot's of big trees and wild flowers. Depending on the loop you stay in there's flush toilets or pit toilets. The loop with the group campsites has flush. The picnic tables here are on cement which is such a nice touch. I don't know what it is about it, but I'm just really impressed by that. The driveways for the campsites are mostly very tiny here though. If you plan on bringing a trailer you need to get there early, especially if you're staying for the weekend! All the sites are walk up as in non reservable (except the group ones), but they are always completely filled on the weekend. ALWAYS. You've got to get there pretty early on a friday to secure a weekend spot. It's a great place to take milky way shots, no light pollution for miles! Also this campground doesn't open on memorial day like most others do, so make sure you check ahead of going all the way up there. We learned that the hard way.

Many locations for tents, RV etc. Mixed use so it can be noisy, gunfire, atv, families. Not a great area for solitude but beautiful. 4wd is not necessary. ENJOY

Great camp host! Beautiful, large camp sites. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Large tress give lots of shade. Flushing toilets and water faucets are available.

We have camped here numerous times over the years and it is a beautiful campground with private sites. However, this year, none of the bathroom facilities were open and the campers had to use some porta potties that were brought in that would get really full. There was no running water either, which has never been the case that I am aware of. It would have been good to have this posted on the websites (there is a National one and a state one) so we would have been better prepared. The camp host was fantastic and very friendly! I would have given it five stars if it weren’t for the water and bathroom issues. I will still come here again-hopefully it was just going on this summer.

The campsites are spaced apart and there is plenty of foliage to separate you from your neighbors, but Wow, I've seen less flies in most drop toilet bathrooms! Speaking of bathrooms, they're closed due to the water being turned off.I think I would have enjoyed this campground at a different date (not fly season / July 2023)

Nice area. Very beautiful. Plenty of wildlife. Big campground. Great camp hosts. No running water so bring your own. Had to use porta potties as the normal bathrooms were not functioning.

We have camped here for 25 years. It is our absolute favorite place to spend time. Especially because of the flushing toilets and the running water. However, last year when we were camping the pump broke and water was not available. We were understanding and assumed it would be fixed this year. To our dismay it was not fixed. There was no water and there were honey buckets placed to replace the toilets. The honey buckets were not enough to service all the people camping there. They were absolutely awful. I will be asking for a full refund and will not be camping here again until this is fixed.

Arrived to our tent site (16 loop c) to find a huge dead pine tree riddled with termites. Sorry, I won’t tempt fate and set up my tent under a dead tree. Insects were worse than I had expected for midsummer at that elevation, so we didn’t stay with our friends at a neighboring site either, and went back home almost as soon as we had arrived. The campground was shady, and others seemed to be having fun. Might be nice in spring or fall weather. Didn’t see any nearby hiking trails, no body of water nearby either, but we were there so briefly that we didn’t explore the area.

Always a favorite. Was pretty busy with opening weekend, but still able to find a comfy spot to stay for the night.

Beautuful quiet area. We saw a deer with velvet on the developing antlers. 2/3rd's of the campsites were available, or several no charge campsites were open within a mile or more. Cool 74 degrees at 8921 ft. elevation.

Beautiful views! Camp grounds were well placed apart. There were differing grounds too, some were shaded with giant pines while others with huge aspens. Very accommodating for small to large groups. Most of the toilets were non-flushing (unless you trek to the group sites, there is one that does) but none of them ever smelled terrible. We also saw lots of wild life, plenty of chipmunks, squirrels, and a surprising number of deer. Definitely will be staying there again in the future.

I've been camping here for 16 years. Love the place. The altitude provides cooler temperatures; nice during the hot summer days. The campsite is paved and has flush toilets. Parking a trailer longer than 24 feet is near impossible in some of these campsites. There are a couple of spots that can accommodate larger rigs. Arrive early on Thursday or Friday during the day as all the good spots will fill up quickly.Camp host are very nice people. They drive by every once and a while to make sure that we are safe.We didn't see much of wildlife while up there this last time other than some chipmunks and squirrels. The neighboring campers said they saw a badger that wasn't afraid to get close to their site.Again, I've been coming here for many years and will continue to for many more. The sites are $23 a night and worth it.

The camp host is out of control! I watched him verbally attack two different guests for rules they had no idea were rules. Instead of approaching them professionally, he appreciated them yelling and telling them to “pack up their stuff and get out of there”. In both incidents the people asked clarifying questions, which made the host even more angry. As a observer, I honestly couldn’t tell you what he was mad about. It took several minutes for the people to understand the issue and in both incidents they were quick to fix the problems. There was no reason for the host to treat guests this way. The lady he attacked was crying after she moved her car that was parked in the wrong place that set the host off. Absolutely ridiculous. Beautiful campground, but not worth staying in unless you are ok getting verbally attacked for rules that you would have no idea we’re rules!

Most amazing 'full nature feel' camping trip I've ever had. Saw a moose, doe, and a herd of wild cows in one day! Not to mention, you are surround by woods and some clearings, but the views are astounding! Beautiful campgrounds! Simply amazing and would definitely come here again!

Took a drive to Monte Cristo campground to check it out. Wanted to see if the sites would accommodate our 24' travel trailer and our truck. Most the sites are for smaller trailers but there are a few that are larger. All the sites are walk-up only and it closes on labor day. It's one of the most beautiful campgrounds we have seen. Clean and well maintained. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. The wife and I will be planning a few trips next year. The camp host was very friendly and answered all all questions. Couple more thing to know. You aren't allowed to use hammocks. They have found that the ropes are damaging the trees. No ATV's are allowed in the campground unless your are camping there and you can only drive them from your campsite to the entrance and back. No driving them around the campground.

We enjoy going here yearly. It's a great campground with lots of trees. Used to be able to drive in and find a spot. You HAVE to reserve ahead of time now, it is typically full every night. Spots have room to spare so you're not too close to your neighbors.

Campground is divided into loops, but there's no mention of that on the Recreation.gov website. Attached are photos I took of the map and list of sites that were posted on the information board at the campground entrance.Loop A is sites 1 through 6Loop B is sites 7 through 13Loop C is sites 14 through 19Loop D is sites 20 through 34Loop E is sites 35 to 47I don't know what's in other loops, but in loop A there are only vault toilets and no water of any sort.

The place is ok, the horse flies are mad as heck. They feed all day long on you. They like hiding in places like your nose, ears and hair. Almost like if they where waiting for you to pass so they can start laying eggs.

This campground holds a lot of history for me. Been coming up here since I was a kid and have never been disappointed. Monte is a very convenient yet beautiful place to camp. It's right off the highway and packed full of tall pines and high mountain flowers. Only downside is usually the abundance of annoyingly loud RV's. Come check it out! You will not regret it.

What a beautiful campground!! We stopped on our way to Yellowstone It was a Monday evening, we didn't have a reservation beforehand. The campground hosts were able to help us reserve our site. Loved that the hosts were also from Ohio. Everyone in the campground was super nice and helpful. There was flushable toliets, nice fire rings, pionic tables and small utility table at each site.
