What a GREAT shelter & staff. I called ahead to ask a few questions about our new girl. The lady knew the dog so we’ll and helped up determine she was PERFECT for our little family. I was so impressed how much she cared about the animals in her care. You really can tell they care and are doing their best. The guy was equally as awesome. The meeting and adoption process was so easy and wow what a fun and pleasurable experience. Our girls is exactly as advertised (okay better than advertised). We feel so grateful for all of the hard work this shelter puts in so we could connect with our perfect fur child. Thank you for making our lives so much better! Thank you for saving these animals. Go adopt from these guys.

I have been volunteering at South Salt Lake for over a year now. The staff is incredible and truly care about the well-being of all their animals. The shelter is small and cleaned often. There are only 4 staff, and they are all so kind and willing to help. They were so compassionate when I had to put my childhood dog down and made the process so much easier. I found a stray in the area, and they took her and her puppies in immediately. They are quick to respond to emergencies, kind to visitors, and have great prices/services. Please if you are considering adopting, donating, or volunteering, give them a visit!

Do something about the dogs at 419 s. 3300 e. For over two years now I've been fighting this just to get some peace and quiet. Do your job, or get sued.

They are amazing with the animals. They took great care of the momma cat I rescued and her babies and are still caring for three of her babies. They held onto themomma for me to adopt, and now she has a great home. We are just waiting to get her fixed, which they are working on helping me with.

The staff here at South Salt Lake animal Shelter truly care about each animal that comes in. They are the true heroes of these animals are taken off the street to be protected and given love! Your adoption is truly a miracle to provide these animals, love and care that they need.

I have asked for help from them and to this day I'm still feeding ferels. Best friends is a little help with food. But those kittens will freeze to death if they don't get help. But you obviously don't care. Your actions speak louder than words. Your business sucks and you all deserve the karma you get for not helping...

Don't waste your time or ever get a rescue animall from them they don't respond to your calls when you speak to them and are rude the neighbors have chickens and they wake up the entire neighborhood and animal services won't come out to respond to the stench noise and the abused dogs screaming barking from homes on our street left out in heat and freezing cold all day. They are ignorant and unprofessional and will not assist you if you call them they won't respond to your call. Don't waste your time and go to the humane society or a animal rescue that actual cares for animals that won't let animals be abused

If you have feral kittens, use a trap to get them (I bait the traps with sardines and have always been successful). Put newspaper (or an old towel) on the bottom. Be sure to check the trap every 15 minutes for kittens and every hour for adults, this especially important in this colder weather. Once you have them you can take them to animal control. Remember that these workers have a hard job and are kept busy all the time, not always with good outcomes. Thanks for all your hard work.

My Overall Experience: Absolutely terrible and abuse their power. The definition of a bureaucrat is: "an official in a government department, in particular one perceived as being concerned with procedural correctness at the expense of people's needs."Incident: I work in South Salt Lake, and rather than locking my dog in a kennel or chained up for +8 hours, I've trained my dog to be obedient and take her to work with me. We have an enclosed fenced yard with a gate for customers to enter and exit from. My dog has been trained to never cross the line onto the sidewalk to public property. I've seen adults and children try to call her out from the yard, but she never does because she's been taught otherwise. During my normal work routine, I noticed a South Salt Lake Code Enforcement vehicle park in front of our building--didn't really think anything of it. Moments later I notice an Animal Control vehicle pull up as well. At this point, I decide I should check on my dog to make sure she is okay. Just as I walk outside, I see my dog loaded in the animal control truck and driven off. The code enforcement person still remained, as well as (2) witnesses that live adjacent to my work. I asked the one neighbor what happened. He said, "I was just putting on my shoes to tell them that was your dog. They baited your dog outside the gate and took her because she wouldn't go to them when they called her." I quickly ran to the code enforcement officer's vehicle and told her that they took my dog. She followed the animal control truck and had her return my dog. When I asked the animal control officer why she would bait a non-violent dog that is hesitant to leave it's property. She instantly became very rude and defensive why I would ask such a question. It turns out they had a report of a WHITE dog "At Large." My dog is black and brown with small white markings on her feet.So had the officer explained the situation respectfully and apologized for mistakenly taking my dog, there would not be an issue....BUT the officer acted completely out of line and threatened to impound my dog as she tightened the slip knot around my dogs neck because I was questioning this whole situation. I asked her, if the dog was hesitant to leave the property why wouldn't you just knock and ask if it was my dog? Her response was they don't have that time for that and she then went into details of how my dog was technically "At Large."After reviewing the South Salt Lake Code Ordinance and speaking with a few people, the South Salt Lake Animal Control Officers can pretty much do whatever they feel like. Literally, if your dog is not chained or leashed 24/7, it's "At Large" and they can impound. But you can also be fined for having your dog chained too long too. Regardless, it's lose-lose situation for dogs and dog owners. My frustration lies with the way the code is written and the attitude of the officers. They didn't apologize once. All they did was try to wash their hands of any legal obligation, explain the code, made me feel like a bad pet owner for not locking my dog up 24/7, and made me feel lucky they didn't take her. Oh by the way later that day my dog was lethargic, slept the rest of afternoon, and spent that night throwing up....I google the symptoms. Sedative reaction. What if there was an Amber Alert and your kid was playing in the yard. An officer pulls up and lures your kid from your yard with drugged candy, and doesn't even knock on your door. Turns out they have the wrong kid. Bring your kid back to you, not apologize, and then lecture you on letting your kid play in your yard. How would you feel? All I can say is I'm very thankful to be a Murray resident, because there I'm not treated like a criminal for being a good, loving dog owner.

We adopted a cat named Angel today. She is just sweet as can be and has already fit right into our family. The staff helped me choose an animal that was the perfect fit for us. They also helped educate me a bit more on cats (this is our first cat). They were very patient with us and I appreciate their hard work. It would not be an easy job.

I was walking from a central park community center, and was stopped by a young lady about my dogs. She claimed this was the first time she had gotten there on time to talk to my brother and I. She then claimed that I didn't clean up my dogs feces properly and left the bags there on the ground, on multiple occasions. Saying the staff had recognized the German Shepherd and that they had seen us leave the feces behind. We don't do that, we even clean up other dogs feces. I do admit that we the dogs off the leashes to play, but we don't leave them off it if there are people or other dogs there, because usually the other dogs don't have leashes. She didnt have a form of identification on her chest. And she even stopped me halfway through a cross walk to talk to me, not telling me to come to the side to talk safely. She gave us a warning and theatened a citation, but we didn't do what she claimed and still got the threat. Very unprofessional, rude and frankly, ruined a great day.

Updated Review:At last the chronically barking dog next door has been addressed. Since last November (10 months) there's been a non-stop, super loud, neglected barking dog. It took months of persistence, bark logs, videos, calls to the mayor's office and animal services but at last!South Salt Lake City Council opted to ignore the epic feral cat problem in the city, tying the hands of animal services. Shifting the problem to residents and Best Friend's. We trapped, neutered & vaccinated 10 cats. Costing well into the hundreds of dollars. Best Friend's has a great voucher program but it is not free.A volunteer with a neighbor have trapped, neutered & vaccinated 25-30 ferals on our street alone. This excludes our 10.Deb and her staff do their best with poor funding and a council that wants to shift the burden elsewhere, always. This has contributed to our decision to leave South Salt Lake. When proactive citizens can't get assistance to take actions to improve and build better communities, donating time & money of their own: the council is undermining the urban renewal of it's own city.Best of luck, Mayor Wood. You've got a hard road ahead.Original Review:I've been working for 9 months to address a feral cat colony. Feeding the 6-8 cats that come around our yard.I trapped and took 1 directly to be neutered. After many missed connections, I finally talked to Deb. She is pleasant.I trapped our favorite feral. Deb said they'd have them spayed & return them "within two days." Over a week later a shaved cat and it's sister materialized from a Best Friend's volunteer. On the plus side: it was free.I've had to nurse the shaved cat in my garage for 9 days so it doesn't die of hypothermia. If we'd have taken it in ourselves, there was a week of high temps. The cats wouldn't have been in the shelter for a week or in a garage cage for another 9-10 days. It's stressful for the cat & lots of work (& $$ running a space heater). We're glad to have healthy, spayed cats around.

Service received while there to get new resident registration tags for my dog was excellent. The ability to travel on UTA to that destination is ridiculous. No bus or Trax goes anywhere near. Pedestrian paths are dangerously incomplete. Have some compassion for low income seniors who can't drive.

Absolute garbage facility. I've been trying for months now to get in touch with them about a barking dog. They never pick up there phone, save once every 20 attempts. When they do, they complain about being "short staffed" yet don't make attempts to hire new staff. I had to personally go into their office before I could get anything done about it, and they never follow up with me or return my call when I leave a message. God forbid I ever have an animal related emergency.

My dogs have been living with me in SSLC for 6 years and we have never had to deal with Animal Control, Until now...On a Friday one of our dogs dug his way under a fence and was picked up by SSL Animal Control with a handwritten note in our door that he had been taken to the City shelter.( Luckily somehow they knew it was our dog...) We didn't see the note until after we got home from work which was also after the shelter had closed. Now our dog is in "jail" all weekend- without bail.... I can't see that there are staff there on the weekend.( I've been driving by trying to see if I can talk with someone about getting the animal "sprung"...).The animals for sure can't go outside. Though I am sure the animals have food and water in there, I hope he isn't mistakenly euthanised or anything tragic. I also ask myself if there are no people on duty are they walking and sleeping in their own filth?... I wish we didn't have to wait DAYS to address this simple issue. We are ready to pay any fines and fees and will roll over there in a minute to get our friend back where he belongs. I imagine he is terrified. I hope at least there are other animals there for company.

This is the worst animal control I have ever been in contact with. They are incredibly hard to reach and seem to never call back when they claim they will...so eventually you will have to continue calling to try to reach them. It seems that they’re unknowledgeable about their jobs and don’t know how to follow procedure. I don’t understand how possibly hard it is to work at an animal center.

Very quick responders! We had found a cat clearly hurt, unable to walk, in need of help. I was able to get through to a representative quickly and within 30 minutes the responders were there to help.
