Loved this place. The people are so caring. The place smells so clean. We got our dog here. She's a sweetheart and we are so glad that we found her!

Great shelter with caring staff. This shelter needs resources, especially a working phone system! So many more animals could be placed and the city better served if the shelter was reachable by phone.

I’m new to the area. A kitten was meowing for food and water. Looked malnourished and had an eye infection. I felt so bad that I couldn’t keep the kitten but I move around a lot and my housing doesn’t allow it. So I go to this shelter and a female associate was absolutely rude to me the entire time, I said I didn’t have anywhere else to take the kitten and I hoped it would be in good hands. Her response? Well if he/she has any underlying disease that can be passed down to other cats, we’re euthanizing it. No remorse whatsoever as if killing animals is a normality. Wish I could adopt every pet from there to save them from the associates I experienced. Wish I wasn’t allergic to cats otherswise I would’ve tried my best to nurse it back to health and keep it, but I couldn’t. Thank you to this shelter for making me lose hope in humanity and kindness.

I love the Isabel Y. Garcia Animals shelter so much so that I made a vow to volunteer my time during the week to help out with walking and watching the animals and bathing and cleaning duties. I'll even get to have one of those cool masks 😷 with the city of Port Isabel logo on it. Thanks team and Thank you founders.

Staff are very friendly & informative. I adopted a small dog & am getting all her vaccinations & will get her spayed soon. Please look at the shelters before buying, there are a lot of great dogs that need good homes.

What a good little shelter! The young guy feeding the animals (Elias I think) knew just about every animal's story, whether they were heartworm positive, and what potential problems each animal might present in certain homes (like whether a dog was good with kids and cats or if a cat was evil). Of course, most of the animals were very sweet and some were already well-trained. While we were there we saw staff rotating dogs into an outside play area and it was clear that every dog was getting regular attention and outside play time which many larger shelters in the Valley aren't able to do.The shelter itself seemed very proactive in regards to treating medical issues. When my girlfriend pointed out that one of the dogs had mange (very common in this area) Elias informed us that, while that was true, the dog was almost done with its treatment and well on the way to recovery. Upon closer inspection I saw that the dog's hair was already growing back! Other shelters in the area do not treat simple medical issues like that until an adopter is found and in many cases the cost of treatment is the responsibility of the adopter. Not the case with Port Isabel Animal Shelter. They go above and beyond by treating all of their animals as if they were their own pets and how they do this without charging an adoption fee is beyond me. Props to them! The building is dated and they could use more space (I didn't see a single open kennel or cage). Hopefully the city will devote some additional resources to the shelter so they can get some more kennel space and hire on a couple additional people. From what I could tell everyone on staff was doing the work of two people, so I am very impressed all the animals were so well-cared for.

Lots of dogs to choose from and workers there seemed to know a lot about them. We did not adopt yet, but plan on going back when we can take some more time.

They don't charge much for adopting an animal, and it includes all the vaccines and spaying and/or neutering. You can also foster before adopting.
