One of the best dining experiences in Texas. Got a reservation months ago and definitely recommend getting a resy in advance (the weekend I went was the Marathon2Marathon event). Appetizers were yummy. Chicken fried steak was bigger than my face and the jalapeño gravy had a nice kick to it. Comes with a side of veggies and mashed potato underneath the fried steak. Would definitely come again. The patio and restaurant are just so beautiful.

Good experience. Had our 21st anniversary dinner. We made a reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived at a table set for 2. We started with some house specialty drink and the oyster nachos were on point. We then received our sw cesar salad. We ordered more drinks. Then the filet and 44 NY strip were served. Melt in your mouth. Desert was the brownie. All good. We will be back

I've been eating at the Gage for years...this past trip on a Friday evening was a disappointment. My husband's chicken fried steak was huge and unimpressive, the gravy they served with it was a cold blob.My chicken tortilla soup was sooo spicy it wasn't enjoyable. The only redeeming factor was my prickly pear margarita.Hoping it was just a new chef with his training wheels still on.

Phenomenal restaurant! We ordered the Filet and New York Strip and both were cooked to perfection. Our Salads were refreshing and large (the Trost Salad and Watermelon Caprese). We also had the Crispy Quail Appetizer and it was yummy. There is a kids menu; however, our 7 year old daughter preferred to do a split plate of the Filet with me and she devoured it. On split plates for a $5 upcharge, the restaurants divides the meat and both plates have the regular serving of veggies on them. Half of the filet was more than enough meat for me with the veggies and salad. We ate inside (there was an outdoor option but it was too hot) and the atmosphere was lovely and service very nice. Reservations are highly recommended in order to get a table.Kid-friendliness: There is a kids menu available. Our 7 year old loved eating here.

I had a terrific Valentine’s Day dinner here. I got the Prime NY Strip and I would most certainly get it again. It’s the biggest strip I’ve ever order and was cooked perfectly. Really appreciated 12 Gage bringing in live music. The young woman played during my entire dinner - no breaks - quite impressive. If you’re staying at the Gage Hotel, you must get a reservation here to round out your visit.

I can confidently say that this is the BEST restaurant in West Texas and even in all of Texas. I will further claim this is the best restaurant I've ever eaten in. From the "Cheer's" atmosphere (where everyone, from the staff and locals, treat you like family) to the amazing food (the Chicken Fried Steak is the size of the dinner plate and is over an inch thick, to the amazing staff (we were lucky enough to have Kurt) this place is pure heaven. I asked my friend if we were in a Twilight Zone episode or had died, because everything was just so perfect. The restaurant also has a separate, but attached bar, where you can either eat or go after the restaurant closes. I can't say enough good things about the 12-Gage. The prices rival the Metroplex, but the food, people and staff make it all worth it. A must stop.

09/13/21 My sister and I came to stay at the Gage Hotel and made a reservation to eat dinner at the hotel restaurant. I enjoyed the house margarita which was great and the ribeye which I would rate a 10/10. My sister enjoyed the pork steak and we both rated it an 8/10. The service we had with Holly was excellent and the food was delicious. I definitely would come again.

Excellent service! Very helpful waiter. I started with the Texas cooler - a cocktail with cucumber vodka, lime juice and topo chico. The waiter also brought to the table some small rolls and corn muffins. We shared the New York Strip and added some mashed potatoes at the waiters suggestion. Everything was delicious! The steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked, with a nice crust. It was more than enough food for two. Add a nice bottle of wine and it’s a great dinner.

Phenomenal steak and service. 12 Gage is an oasis in the Texas desert. I had the rib-eye steak medium rare that was juicy and red with a recommended red wine that paired nicely. Simply a must-do if you’re in the area!

Ordered a bowl of soup and the oyster nachos. This alone a meal would not make, but my and aunt and her friend both ordered the strip steak and they were more than willing to share their portions with me. The steak was amazing. I’m reminded of the difference it makes eating steak in a state with so many cattle ranchers. The oyster nachos were four perfect fried oysters, each atop a corn chip with aioli. For dessert we ordered a creme brûlée and a Mexican brownie with ice cream. Excellent! And the coffee was among the best I’ve had in my life! (Beans from a local roaster in Marfa, Big Bend Coffee Roasters).

First class food, setting, service. Not what you might expect to find in a west Texas railroad town but it's a gem. Accompanied by the amazing hotel and bar, it's truly a destination.

We had a fantastic meal. The food was well prepared, artfully flavored and overall superb. The atmosphere and decor were unique and inviting. The reason I only give it 3 stars is because of the service, beginning with a less than pleasant host with poor communication skills. The server was friendly, however, she brought the main course while we were finishing the appetizer. That happens, but please clear the plates when it is finished. Also, we should not have to ask for water refills. When glasses are clearly empty, please offer more.

I loved the way the menu had their main dish paired with sides so well. The food was satisfying and the service had that small town feeling and southern hospitality.

On our way from Austin to Big Bend, we decided to spend our first night at the historic Gage Hotel in Marathon. We're glad we did. For dinner we treated ourselves to a 5 star dinner at the 12 Gage Restaurant. Our New York. Strip was more than enough for two people. It was cooked to perfection, crisp on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside. The Texas ranch style decore seemed made for steak. The wines were reasonably priced. The hotel and restaurant served as the perfect staging area for our four day trip into Big Bend.

Great food and drinks; especially good given the small town locale. It’s busier than you’d think, so be sure to make reservations. The filet is especially awesome.A bit pricy but what does anything cost anymore anyway?

First time and will be back again. Ordered the Gage prickly pear rose wine, empanadas for the appetizer, and the roast chicken and antelope for the main dishes. All of it was awesome: great flavor and hearty portion sizes. Pricey yes, but good value for the quality and quantity of food. Great ambiance as well.

The food and service was amazing. My salad and main course tasted so good!I was a little disappointed when I asked for a small to-go box and my small portion of food came back in a giant plastic tray that had a giant plastic lid. I’m not impressed by that at all. I would rather a small cardboard box that can be easily composted then a giant plastic tray and lid.All of that plastic goes NOWHERE except to sit in a landfill for eons. Not smart.I think it’s time for all restaurants to embrace more sustainable practices like no straws, paper to-go containers and plant based utensils.Time to uplevel 😎 and get with the times.

Walked since it was the only place open in 50 miles and was pleasantly surprised. The food was amazing! Never had such good New York Strip and my wife enjoyed her Halibut. One kid had veggie pasta and the other seared red fish. The staff was very nice and we enjoyed nice not too loud music during dining. The highest compliment came from the older kid who lamented that unfortunately the restaurant was in the middle of nowhere far from home and we'd probably never go there again. Maybe we'll surprise them one day and drive 395 miles for some really good food.

We tried the 12 Gage Restaurant for my wife’s 60th Birthday. Good service and very nice decor. The starters were ok and would rate as average. Salad was mainly lettuce with few if any other ingredients. However, The entrees were absolutely terrible. The pork chop was burned beyond recognition along with the cabbage? The meat was as tough as boot leather and could hardly be cut with a sharp steak knife. The second order was slightly less burned but even tougher to cut. My sea bass was the opposite. The outside was seared but the inside was badly undercooked. We skipped the birthday desert and left early. The decor and history is no substitute for basic cooking skills and serving quality cuts. We have traveled the world and eaten in hundreds of restaurants. This is by far the worst two entrees we have ever been served.

This is an excellent venue for dinner and after dinner cocktails. I had the Caesar salad with grilled chicken, and draft beer. Service was excellent and the restaurant and bar are fabulous to view.I was here in late January, so the crowd was down and it was a bit chilly at night, but there is plenty of seating outside if the weather is a bit warmer.Parking: I was here in late January, so there weren't very many people in town, but there is plenty of street parking within a short walk of the hotel and the restaurant.

Took my wife on our honeymoon and I absolutely fell in love with the place the atmosphere the look with the exception of country music, but hey it fit the theme of the restaurant and wasn't overbearing. Had an amazing waitress who treated us perfect in my opinion and gave us the best wine pairing for our New York steak. We will definitely be back for the seasonal menu change 😁👍
