As dysfunctional as the cesspool of hempstead texas is, this store gets a C. It's old. It's too expensive, the employees are way underpaid making below the minimum cost of living and are probably overworked as well. The owners must be stuck in the year 1982 because that's the vibe I get when I walk through the fancy automatic sliding doors. It takes me back in time. The aroma of old market smell hits you and you're reminded by your bad childhood. The wine selection is basic. Could do better. Could renovate the dump as well. I'm usually met with some lard hillbilly or spanish lady with 13 screaming kids at the basket coral where I lose all my dignity and self worth and start shoving the wobbly wheel cart thoughout the store. The veggies have no appeal. There's not a whole lot to chose from and the dairy area smells like a nasty yeast infection from a unhygienic thunder beasts. The music played is awful. The atmosphere is extremely depressing. I. Truly surprised however that they don't lock up the steaks. ( Not that there are any good tomahawk steaks or porter house to choose from.) They also do not have a deli or bakery. You could clean that old building with industrial strength cleaner twelve times and THAT smell still lingers. It just feels like the owners are very greedy and do not care about their employees or ever renovating the place. There's always some crabby disgruntled old lady running the courtesy booth who gets an F at customer service. The only decent employee I fully trust and respect is Lindsey. She's always kind caring smiling and helpful. I hope to God y'all are paying her atleast $26 an HR. Because that's the amt of hourly pay it takes to afford rent and be able to rent the crummiest apartments at $900 a month. They ask u make three times that to qualify. I'm gonna go back to shopping at Kroger and avoiding that place ain't because I know all the employees deserve so much more than they are paid. There's like no signs of a public bathroom so if I ever have to go, the coke isle shall suffice as my potty area. Also like ten years ago they kicked me out for bringing a cat I found inside the store. Another compliant I have is the yogurt selection is awful. Blue bell ice cream has too much space that could be used for new Orleans ice cream co ice cream flavors that are WAY better and cheaper. Also there's no app to order online with as well. The 1980s sucked. Please stop being a greedy business owner and pay better asap. Or when I get my settlement, and open my own business I am going to take a couple of your employees and pay them a liveable wage, give them health insurance that's worth a f and give quarterly bonuses and have a modern hi tech store and resturaunt. I will pay lindsey n the guy cashier( I forgot his name ) a minimum of $28 an HR. U too can afford it. Also for safety reasons please light the parking lot at night better. Those stupid cops across the street cannot be everywhere to save people from your negligence. I pay with real money too btw not food stamps. So please stop price gouging just because we're in the ghetto. Be a good boss/ owner. Offer employees raises too. Well back to Kroger I go, the rona is over with and that's about the only positive thing I have experienced with arlans. Pa that customer who owns this bicycle, is a very nice man.

Called to confirm propane availability and was told it was. Drove to Arlans, shopped & knowingly paid more to support the "little guy" vs Kroger in Fairfield that is equal distance from my home, maybe closer, only to find out no cylinders available. Unfortunately they have permanently lost my business.Note: Go to Loves, they are the same price.

Granted, i used to have a few issues in the past with Arlan's, but over time, it's gotten better. Doris and Russell run a tight ship and keep the store looking nice and fully stocked. Yes, the prices are high due to inflation, but the sales make up for that. The staff are friendly, especially the morning cashiers, always saying hello.I appreciate everyone who take the time to make sure my shopping experience is a good one. It's better than driving a long way for a good deal.

Since it was sold there have been many changes including not having a discount meat section. According to an employee they would rather throw it away instead of selling it at a discount when it's about to go bad. That is the very thing that brought me in on Friday mornings to see what meals could be made that week from what discounted meat they had. Luckily Brookshire Brothers still has a reduced meat section so I guess they'll be getting my business. I'm sure they won't miss me.

I went to buy a phone with boost mobile, I was very happy with the service I received from the man working the booth I did not catch his name but he was great! Very professional, and kind. He got me a good deal and I was impressed with his multitasking abilities never skipping a beat. Thank you so much for the wonderful experience.

It is what it is a small town grocery store. Prices are high but they do have some good weekly sales. It's within walking distance of my house so shop there regularly for small items an sales. Employees are super nice they also have a Boost Mobile phone store inside.

Great neighborhood store. the managers that work there have been there a long time and always helpful. Especially the store manager, if you want something, he will try his best to get it at his store. Meat is always a great price, fresh looking. Produce looks colorful. Cashiers are usually nice but you might get the one that has no idea what she's doing.

Smells like rot. Store is filthy and often the products are expired. I'd give them 1 star but the staff is so friendly.

We visit the Hempstead area twice a year on vacation to operate our fireworks stand. Our first stop in town is to Arlan's for supplies. A wonderful little home-town grocery, Arlan's has a good selection of produce, pantry items, paper goods and frozen foods. But what really stands out is their meat specials. I always find good low prices on top quality meats while we are in town.A large parking area and convenient location makes Arlan's a wonderful place for quick in and out trips as well as those dreaded extended-stay engagements. The staff is helpful and friendly and we are greeted each season by the same smiling faces. Problems are solved without hassle and customer service is wonderful. We look forward to visiting Arlan's every season and would highly recommend this little grocery to local residents and travelers alike. Thanks to Arlan's for making us feel welcome each and every time we hit town.

It's the best, freshest, and friendliest. They carry enough of a selection for me to call Arlan's in Hempstead my home store.

Selection is just OK. They have what I need some of the time, but there isn't a choice of brand. Customer service at the register is just OK. Sometimes the cashiers can't be bothered to pause their conversations with each other long enough to engage with the customer. I only shop there because it's the closest grocery store to my house, and typically only go in for one or two items.

Back when this grocery store was called Harlan's, it was pretty low rent. But somebody else bought it, dropped the H to make it just Arlan's, and has really turned the place around. Quality of produce is excellent. What they lack in variety they make up for in quality and price.

Management sucks since the long time store manager left. Cashiers usually hanging over their phone or not helping each other. Stockers are really creepy and can barely understand them if you ask where something is. Produce looks nice, meat is pretty fair. Still cheaper than brookshire brothers but both places will fail when they open up the new heb.

I had a very bad experience with Arlan's on Sunday, February 23, 2020. There was no apology nor any compensation for the expired meat that I purchased. On this day, I purchased smoked pork bones. Upon opening the meat, it had an awful smell. I went back to the store and the manager took the bag with the meat and threw it in the trash like it has happened often. The meat that I needed was not in stock and I ended up coming out of pocket $5 more for an alternative. Not sure if I will continue to give this place another chance.

Variety and Quality is typical of a small town grocery store. The Hempstead store is older. People and staff are usually nice. Store is usually not crowded, so can checkout in a reasonable amount of time. Prices are a bit on the high side.

A quaint small town store serving a rapidly growing diverse population with less than substandard amount of foods and products. The cost of living certainly affects everyone in someway or another. But for sure, needed changes will make conducting business better for proprietor and patrons.
