The house of Hope is exactly that! A wonderful and loving refuge for unlucky cats and dogs. They all look as happy as they can be without a forever home, well and lovingly treated and cared for. We just adopted a wonderful dog, Wendy, who is now the center of our household. I hope everyone would donate to this wonderful refuge and better yet adopt and give a loving home to one of their four legged residents!

Zero stars isn't an option unfortunately. We came in during open hours to check on a dog that we were told we were the first applicants for. When we arrived to ask, the woman had nothing to say other than "We're running a meeting right now, can we talk about this later?" and wouldn't even let us view the other animals. Which is ridiculous, if you run a meeting during open hours, assume it'll be interrupted.Zero patience, Zero explanation, Zero help.We were told by a friend who works for them that they had an employee take this dog that they knew my mom had been preparing for, and again, was the first applicant for.We were only coming in to follow up.Disgusting attitudes and dishonest people.

I took my special needs kids with me to find a new addition to our family. The staff knows the dogs very well and we were able to visit in a quiet area outside to get to know her. We are so happy for her. She is just a joy. Thank you so much for your dedication to these animals and to your community. She isn't really a guard dog so much as she just stays with you and melts. She just puts her paws on my girl and checks her then she goes to me and My son and then back to my girl each time. No one trained her to do that. She did it the first night. I thought it was confusion so I had my girl pretend she was sick and the doggy did it anyway. She named her after the girl with the face in the movie. The superhero . God sends angels for his children. This dog is My girls I can't explain that bond wait till you see. She melts in her and protects her.

We have both an adult cat and a ten week old puppy that we’ve adopted from GCHS. both are great and we were very pleased at the obvious care given to the animals, cleanliness of the facility, and the friendly, helpful staff!

Super nice, easygoing people. They made the adoption process easy and they genuinely care about the animals. We are adopting a sweet Chihuahua pup. A dream come true.

Everyone here was so helpful. You can tell the employees and volunteers take the care of the many animals here seriously. We fostered a young kitten who quickly turned into a part of our family. Just finalized his adoption today. I would definitely recommend to friends and would go back here when looking for a new furbaby.

Ten years ago today, we adopted our beautiful one-year-old Smith Ann Wesson at your shelter. Today, we celebrate her eleventh birthday, and we remained so grateful for your work. We have loved this girl from day one! Thank you for saving her for us!Faye and Pat Frasier

Dropped off some food, wish they took Aluminum cans. These folks are Saints in my book. Very dedicated and friendly. Thank you for what you do.

Caring, clean, and compassionate! The staff and volunteers treat the animals as if they were the pet owners. There are safeguards in place to protect the dogs and cats from getting off the grounds, but they all have indoor and outdoor access. Facility does not have a "kennel" smell and animals are socialized to increase adoption rate. Very well run shelter!

They won't take in any pit breeds or pit mixes. They look and seem like a great place over all but it was really irritating finding out they don't take pit mixes.

Recently moved to Texas, my daughter and I have been wanting a dog since we could remember, now that we have settled in our home we decided to look for our next family member. I couldn't have chosen a more perfect puppy than Ozzy! The HSA welcomed my wife and I, showed us around and introduced us to our puppies mom and the res tof her litter! They sent us home with everything we needed, gave us clear information and instructions on what Ozzy needs and future vet visits!Thank you for everything HSA!

What an amazing place, with amazing people. Talked with Janet about finding a little friend for my 92 year Dad on Friday. She told me that she had the perfect senior dog in mind for him. We drove from Port Aransas to meet Uncle Grandpa on Saturday. The rest is history. There was an immediate connection between them, that has continued to grow with each new day. My Dad is so happy. Thank you, Janet.

We went there having a couple dogs in mind. I even called ahead of time telling the lady (I think her name was autumn?) that we were on our way WITH MY KIDS. Once we got there she was immediately disrespectful and rude because we brought our kids with. She made multiple comments about how our kids were just too much for the dogs to be around. She said our kids were going to scare the dogs and that we should "Just go to an actual animal shelter where they can handle kids being too loud." Her actual words. My kids were not being loud they were excited to adopt a dog and instead was told by a stranger that the dogs wouldn't like them. Absolutely unprofessional. If kids aren't allowed maybe put a sign up or even mention on the phone the limit of people allowed? We drove over an hour to look at dogs and instead we were not allowed to see them. She only allowed us to see the puppies even though we told her we wanted an older dog. There is some beautiful dogs on the website. But due to the staff being horrible I do not recommend going there. Which is sad because those dogs deserve a loving home. I truly hope they treat the dogs better than they treat humans.

I was recently at this place looking for a new edition to our family. While I was there not even 30 minutes I told them what I was looking for. And felt very down graded because of our smoking habits that I felt we didn't qualify for the new edition we was looking for. They referred us to the adults of what we wanted and every single one was a runner or to old and set in their ways for being there to long . Because people get graded for their fault . we walked out very disappointed. On how we was treated. Will never go back or refer anyone.

This place is terrific and I highly recommend you go visit. We found our new family member Pepper who was born and raised by the wonderful team at the facility. Pepper (Peppermint Patti) is doing great during her first week and we can tell she was lovingly cared for based on how well adjusted she is. The facility is very clean and the dogs get lots of outdoor space and playtime.

We got one of our Fur babies here and love the treatment of the animals and the Room the dogs have to run outside. I would have given it 5 stars however some of the staff ( mainly the director)make you feel as if you are a criminal applying to adopt. I know that they want the animals to go to loving homes. But she made it less of a joy for me and the children. It made for a very uncomfortable experience. I have adopted and cared for many animals over the years and they still wanted to do a home visit to make sure we could take care of a dog. Even though I had the proper paperwork and a Vet to verify my care of animals. The lady next to me was able to walk out without a home visit. So what is the criteria that requires one? They don't like the way you look? We went back to adopt a kitten but thought twice when we received the same treatment even after adopting our precious puppy. Such a shame .

My wife and I had to rehome our poodle of 9 years. We are traveling and our little baby Charlie Faye needed treatment for a thyroid and a kidney issue. We gave up our hearts so she could live longer. Autumn the manager owner of this location is a wonderful lady, Sally who works for her is a very wonderful person also. The facility is clean and open and what you would want if you had to do the same thing we did. Our hearts will forever be crushed for not having Charlie with us but her life Will go on longer because of us. Thank you Autumn thank you Sally.

I adopted a sweet mixed terrier yesterday afternoon. The employees of the shelter were very accommodating to me by providing me with blankets, toys, and food for my puppy. I especially liked that they allowed me to have the animal overnight before adopting in order to ensure that I liked my puppies temperament and the way she behaves towards me. Additionally, they provided me with heartworm and flea medicine at no charge since I live in San Antonio and still need to find a veterinarian for subsequent prescriptions. The level of service provided was more than adequate and I will continue doing business with them if I decide to adopt other animals.

The staff were very welcoming and took time to give me a tour. I was impressed with the cleanliness and affection shown to their pets. I like the adoption policy they have. When we're ready to adopt, this is where we'll go.

Finally found this place open, but don't agree with the rules for adopting. It use to be, if a dog, cat or Llama needed a new home...you went down to the local Humane Society or pound and walked away with a new best friend. That isn't so anymore. I understand the need for making sure the dogs, cats, lamas and other assorted animals are placed in homes where they will be taken care of, but being told all the rules pertaining to adoption restrictions also placed on a pet companion you have had for over 2 years is silly. No, I am not going to get my Poppy spayed so I can adopted one of the Humane Society's puppies. So, today I walked away from Howler, a mix of Jack Russel and Chihuahua pup. He would have been given a life of ease, plenty of exercise, maybe taught to be a kayaking dog, taking camping with many walks on the beach, Poppy to play tug of war with and many adventures in his and Poppy's lifetime. Now, I will be looking at breeders who may have small dogs to buy. Oh well...

I went looking for the dog that’s been there the longest, 6 months ago, they brought out Bo, a Hurricane Harvey rescue. He is the perfect fit with my other dogs! Love the attention and care they give to the animals in their care!
