I needed to get a missing vaccine for a last minute boarding for my cat. I appreciated how the vet was very accommodating and said he could take him in the same day. However, the facility and exam room were incredibly disorganized, dark and looked filthy. He handled my cat very aggressively which caused the cat to become very defensive and vocal - he then said he was too scared to touch my cat and that he didn’t have anything to protect himself against him. He was incredibly rude during the whole interaction and was borderline screaming, I should have listened to reviews about bedside manner and the facilities. Myself and other friends have been to many vets that are like this with cats - do not offer to care for cats if you don’t know how to work with them.

Took my cat here to get neutered. The place reeked of urine I should've left right then. My poor cat was covered in urine when I came to pick him up. I had to bathe him and then bleach and wash his cat carrier twice to get the stink out. I had to throw away the towel I had put down in the carrier. Who knows how long my poor cat sat in his own urine right after surgery! Unsanitary and I'm lucky he didn't end up with an infection. The price was cheaper than others and now I know why.

Very happy with the service, communication, and knowledge!I was a little hesitant trying this clinic because of the 3.5 star rating. But I called since my ferret was sick and nobody else wanted to see him.Unfortunately, my ferret ended up passing away before I could get in the car.But I liked the uncomplicated and friendly service I received on the phone, so I took my poodle here a couple months after my ferret passed. The dog had a lump on his belly. Dr. Hitchcock got us in the same day to do an exam. Two days later we were back to operate. Everything went well, my dog healed up beautifully. Dr. Hitchcock even called post op to check on him. On top of that, they only charged me $260 for everything, including exam, operating, and a week long antibiotics regime.

We needed someone local who could trim our Conure’s beak and claws and after calling a lot of places, this is where we were eventually sent. I called and was able to get in right away and he did a great job and now our bird can eat and sleep comfortably without his beak interfering. We’ll be going back as needed now.

My elderly chihuahua mix (10 years old) was attacked by a large dog on a Friday morning. I called everywhere to see who could take her and also would accept a payment plan as I hadn’t gotten my check yet. He assured me that he took payment plans and to go ahead and bring her in. When I came in I was told to go weigh my dog myself, which really wasn’t a problem, then when I was asked for my information he was very short and was rushing me, also not too big of a deal. Then, as my dog is sitting on the exam table with two large gashes in her neck that are dripping blood everywhere, he looks at her paws instead and says “Her nails need to be cut too.” Yes, my dogs nails get long, it’s been a problem her whole life, I admit it’s a hassle cutting them and since she’s old I just let it slide a lot. BUT SHES HERE FOR TRAUMA TO HER NECK, SHE IS LEAKING LIKE A FAUCET ON YOUR TABLE. When we finally take her to the back, he has me put her in a kennel with a piece of newspaper down and says she’ll be ready this evening. No time, so I assume he’ll call me, vets always do. He calls me right before closing and says “Are you coming to get your dog?” Yes, I didn’t know she was ready but I’m on my way. He then asks if I have any money to put towards the bill. I say “No sir, I explained to you before I arrived that I get paid tomorrow, I wouldn’t be able to pay you today. I have $10 to my name.” He then laughs at me and says “We’ll then you can come pick her up in the morning and hangs up. Long story short, I paid $200 for my dog to simply be sewn up. She was filthy when I got her back, still covered in her own blood, her collar hadn’t even been removed (mind you she has some pretty serious neck wounds), and she has clearly urinated on herself, I could smell it. He only sent me home with 6 antibiotic pills, no pain relievers, no cone, nothing. Now, 6 days later, I’ve had to take her to ANOTHER vet and spend $400 more to be told she has an abscess and her wounds are now infected. Sorry, but 0/10 do NOT recommend this vet.

Dr. Hitchcock is AWESOME. Very practical and knowledgeable. He communicates very directly with you about your animal and addresses concerns. Little to no wait time at all for appointments, and very reasonable cost $ for care for neutering and shots for our two cats. Definitely recommend!

Absolutely love this place!! Was recommended by a friend. He’s so nice and friendly, took great care of my 9 year old dog and my 2 year old bird. Got in super quickly. So glad I’m established here, I know if I have an emergency I’ll be in great hands.Only place in Abilene I’ve found that takes birds and is still accepting new patients.Said he only charges for what he has too and it was significantly less than everywhere else in Abilene, couldn’t be happier.

Dr. Hitchcock continues to go above and beyond the call of duty! Although I now reside in Waco, TX - the drive back to Abilene for appointments is well worth the time. He is a Military veteran who fought for our country and also my service/assitance furry friend. In a world where integrity seemingly means less and less, Dr Hitchcock remains steadfast in his honorable service to both humanity and animals. I remain a loyal customer. Dr. Hitchcock is available 24/7 for my furry family members needs. His diagnostic skills are extraordinary and always correct resulting in swift action for the health of my animal as well as a tremendous cost savings. He truly cares folks. His service is from the heart.

It’s obvious that any responses to any reviews here are from a paid service through google, because I definitely didn’t experience any type of communication that wasn’t just a gruff, rude and abusive man who needs to be reported. Please go somewhere else if you care about your pets at all. And anyone saying “I love him, he’s straight to the point!…”Just. No. People can be straight to the point and not abusive to their customers-people and/or pets. He also works alone-without a receptionist or vet tech. I had no idea that I would be expected to hold down a 75 lb dog myself while he administered vaccines. Even yelled at me to “Pay attention!” while he did it. I’m sure he’s got a heart and loves animals, but none of this is okay. There were several sticky old piles of urine in the waiting area, presumably from freaked out animals from all of the unnecessary shouting. When I walked in, he was yelling at a customer on the phone, then slammed the phone down while cracking jokes about how stupid she was to the person waiting in line. I believe every negative review here 100% and you should too. I would also ad that he handwrites his receipts and records, so good luck deciphering any of the info. And yep, if you’re wondering. He also threw a debit card at me. Seems like he lacks any sort of impulse control whatsoever. Good luck!

I can't thank Dr. Hitchcock enough for all he did for my cat Hank. He was so sick, and Dr. Hitchcock did everything in his power to help him. He went above and beyond! Unfortunately, he did not make it. He is very compassionate and truly cares about your pet.

Love this doctor/ man. We were able to get in easily. Our kitten was spayed and has healed great. No unnecessary drugs or materials were pushed on us. This is a genuine man that loves animals, and wants to perform a just service. Dr. Hitchcock is genuine and to the point. I enjoyed his dry sense of humor as well :) we will definitely be bringing our dogs, cat, and any future animals here, to him!

Took my moms dog there to get spayed. The Vet is my type of person. Likes to get stuff done and get people on their way. Not drag things out or try to find other ways to charge and make your bill go up more. Highly recommend!

Dr. Hitchcock is one of the few sensible vets left in town. His pricing is very reasonable. He is there to take care of your animals, and has always been very kind to me and my animals. He isn’t there to drain your wallet, and doesn’t do unnecessary tests and imaging. I strongly suspect most of the people who leave negative reviews were ones who wanted payment plans, etc. it isn’t reasonable to expect a small vets office to finance the care of your animals. Let me be clear. It is not the responsibility of any vet to care for the stray animal you found for free. He is a excellent Vet with many years of experience. He is also very accessible, and doesn’t make you wait forever like many clinics. Glad to have him!

He does throw debit cards. I read the reviews and thought there was no way that could be true, that would be totally unnecessary. It is true. Now, I took a dog to him in the past and I know he can be caring and compassionate to these animals, I’ve seen it. I just feel like the best way to ensure the best care for your client (the animal) is to take your time and be educational and informative to their owners. I wish he could have been that vet for us, I wish I could have felt like I could learn from him. Instead I felt rushed in and out, my dog was given a vaccination and nothing was said to me about potential side effects. He did have side effects. I assumed the lethargic behavior was a normal injection reaction, but it was the first time this had ever occurred, and of course just like humans they can have minor reactions. I just wish my appointment was worth more than 2 minutes of his time, I just wish something had been said to me about what to watch for; because the truth is my dog can’t speak for himself to tell me. It’s disappointing, but I received a referral for Dr. Bloodgood and that seems like he’s going to be everything we need.

Dr. Hitchcock is a very experienced, no BS veterinarian. I took two female cats, one young adult cat and one older kitten, to be spayed. Dr. Hitchcock was very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Once he took some notes on each cat, he took them to the back and then kindly invited me to go into another room to show me his beautiful hawk, which he had rescued from barbed wire where it had gotten tangled and stuck. Before I left, he thoroughly answered any questions I had concerning the kitties. When I returned later that afternoon to retrieve the cats, they were ready to go. They were a bit cranky, of course, but that's to be expected after surgery. Dr. Hitchcock did a very professional job with the two spaying procedures and the cats were feeling much better by the next morning. He does not prescribe pain medication after the surgery unless you specifically ask for it. I had some kitty cat pain medication at home so I did not need a prescription. But you may want to ask for pain medicine to help ease your pets discomfort for the rest of the day and night. They should be feeling much better by the next day. Dr. Hitchcock also accepts vouchers from the Humane Society and the Abilene Animal Services Adoption Center aka the Pound. These vouchers make it much cheaper and affordable to have your pets spayed or neutered. Dr. Hitchcock also stocks and sells Science Diet dog and cat food along with a variety of other products for your pets. I would definitely recommend visiting the Buffalo Gap Rd Animal Clinic for the care of your pets.

If you deeply care for your pets pls take.them.elsewhere! Came here today. The office was empty didn't say hello asked with an attitude what I wanted.. yelled because I wasn't being clear when I repeated my phone number 5 times to him. He answered a customers phone call by yelling at them to speak clearly and to "get to the point" Scared my puppy and made him pee himself from his ugly attitude and handled him very roughly. And ended my visit by getting my card thrown at me. Didn't expect such foul behavior from a veterinarian

Dr Hitchcock does answer his own phone sometimes and Unlike some people I felt lucky he did … when our cat needed immediate attention he said go ahead and bring her in now … Got ms. Kitty all Fixed her up and also gave us samples of food ect on another occasion He also drove all the way out to our home to vaccinate all of our cats and dogs at the same time … he only ask I have the cats all gathered up before he got here … think it was a house call charge of like 50$ which I was happy to pay instead of spending an entire day loading heavy dogs ect back forth to town , He also has w fair and honest pricing .. Thankyou again Buff gap rd animal clinic

Dr. Hitchcock is knowledgeable and very informative about any condition my dogs/cats/lizard/bird may come up with. He is very direct and matter of fact and I like that. He knows how to take care of my pets and makes me feel comfortable that I can rely on him for anything. His heart for animals is one in a million. I have been referring people to him since I met him working out at Dyess Vet clinic, while they were without a vet. I will continue to seek his help with my animals.

Last April I took my 14 year old sweetest cat in to be put to sleep. My usual vet was unavailable and she had taken a turn for the worse. The Dr was rude, uncaring and virtually dragged her to a metal table covered with a grill when he thought she was going to vomit as she died in my arms. (She didn't vomit and I would have cleaned it up if she had, my baby was dying!!) She was left on a cold table wrapped in her blanket and when I went to pay, I kid you not, he threw my debit card at me!! THREW it!! I'm sure he is a competent veterinarian but if you seek a compassionate passing for your pet, look else where. I'm still upset 10 months later. (I've written this now because just lost my 16 year old at my regular vet clinic, totally different experience, kind, compassionate, genuinely caring. Very different.)

Perhaps Dr. Hitchcock's skills in caring for animals is satisfactory, but his people skills are non-existent. I thought it odd when he answered the phone himself when calling to set up an appointment. But after meeting him in person I realize that he probably can't keep any employees given his rude, condescending attitude.Maybe he loves and adores certain types of people and animals, but he had no empathy toward the animals we brought in, and was openly hostile toward every human I saw him interact with.

Dr. Hitchcock was originally referred to me by a previous vet from my last town. At first he came off as a little abrupt, but I think he just wants to get to the issues. He's really good at his job and has helped our doggie feel better when others couldn't. After a couple of visits he's warmed up and I really trust this vet. He's also really fair priced.

I wanted to share my experience with this veterinarian. So that my judgement wasn't clouded, it has taken me quite sometime to write this review. My sweet Daisy dog had fallen ill. Being new to the area and unfamiliar with the local veterinarians, I called Buffalo Gap animal clinic as it was close to our home. The vet was kind enough to get in us right away, however, when we arrived, he did a quick review (less than 5 minutes) of Daisy and based on not having a temperature, told me nothing was wrong with her. I tried to explain that she wasn't eating, lethargic and had a runny nose. I asked if she needed blood work or an X-ray. He continually cut me off, saying I would be wasting my money on unnecessary tests. However to pacify me, he gave her a steroid shot for her runny nose. He acted as if I was putting him out and in a sense bothering / wasting his time. I knew in my heart something was wrong but as he was the professional, we left. This is where I made my first mistake. Several days later, he called and asked how she was doing. I thought it was kind of him to call and I explained that while she appeared to get better for a few days, was beginning to relapse and was now experiencing labored breathing. He asked that we come back in and I agreed. This was mistake #2. I knew I needed a new vet, but was feeling desperate as no one else was able to get her in quickly. At this point, she was running a temperature. He gave her an antibiotic. In trying to talk to him, I attempted to explain my worry and knew something more was going on. I asked if she needed an Xray / blood work. He cut me off, was rude, unfeeling, dismissive and told me I was wrong. I gave Daisy the antibiotics and she appeared to feel better for a few days, however, things took a turn for the worse and her breathing became worse. Mistake # 3. Being desperate, on my behalf, my mother ran her back to the vets office. It was a Friday morning and I knew we could not go into the weekend with this continuing. She was in pain and clearly suffering. We were stressed, worried and devastated at how our sweet girl was doing. When my mom took her in under an emergency situation, he was rude, again dismissive and basically told my mother that nothing was wrong with her and told her to leave. When my mom brought her home, I was furious with how they were treated and urgently called other vets. Begging someone to see her right away, Big Country obliged. They completed blood work and an Xray and within 30 minutes, it turned out, our sweet Daisy had an inoperable tumor that was taking over 90% of her lung capacity and had pushed her heart out of place. Sadly, we lost our sweet girl later the same day. Needless to say we were beyond devastated. While I know that the owner / veterinarian at Buffalo Gap could not have prevented nor solved for the issue we faced, Daisy did not need to suffer for the 3 1/2 weeks of hell that he put us through. If he had listened, showed compassion and went an extra step as I repeatedly asked and was denied, we could have found out earlier and not let her suffer in immense pain. The professional doesn't always know whats best!!!!! In the end, I blame myself for listening to this guy and not trusting my instinct! I promise you, its a hard pill to swallow and now I have to live with myself knowing she suffered unnecessarily. It's been over a month and I'm still hurt, angry and devastated. The point of my review is not to sway your opinion one way or the other but instead, give you the facts of our experience. This was a sad lesson learned and I will never trust or revisit this veterinarian again. I wouldn't trust this guy with any pets health / happiness. He's cold, callous and has lost the true love of pets that most likely caused him to become a veterinarian in the first place. My hope is that if you do seek this veterinarian out, he will provide you with much better care, compassion, empathy and concern for your treasured love that we were denied.

I happened to stumble upon this clinic and Dr. Hitchcock when a cat wondered up to our back porch severely injured. After calling clinic after clinic, Dr. Hitchcock answered on the first ring and requested we come in immediately. He was very direct and very knowledgeable. With his help, we were able to save the cat and she has full mobility. We have since taken other injured animals in to see him and he always provides the best care and guidance. So very very thankful for Dr. Hitchcock and his clinic.

Originally I thought Hitchcock was a good veterinarian. Boy I was wrong!!!! I recently brought my puppy in to be spayed. When I brought her in he was very rough with her(tossing her in a cage) and then dragging her by her harness when came to pick her up. I also am now having to bring my puppy to a different vet due to problems with the original surgery. If you love your pets, my opinion is DO NOT bring them here! Horrible!

If I could give 0 stars I would!!I called to make an appt to have 2 dogs fixed. I have never been spoken to so rudely. I did not make the appt because if he is going to be so ugly to me, I am not comfortable leaving my fur babies in his hands!
