I honestly will say regardless if you want a bird that has been hand raised this is the place. Yes it does smell, they are birds! Yes it is a bit run down, birds have a small market in memphis. Very helpful and has all you need to get started!

Jim's is far from a polished hoity toity place, but their birds speak for themselves (sometimes literally!). Petco and PetSmart will never see your dollars again after getting that personal touch. the birds are well socialized with perfect pet temperaments. for birds, and pretty much every other animal, their hatching and pre-fledging environment are incredibly important and Jim's does it right.for supplies they are also nearly unrivaled. I would like to see a better pellet selection (this may have improved since I was last there, but they mainly had seed) but they are pretty much the only place in Memphis that carries those actually-nice wrought-iron cages that I view as a necessity with anything bigger than a parakeet. they know their stuff and will help you find exactly what you're looking for.it's a stroke of luck to have a bird breeder in Memphis, and even better that their birds are wonderful. Jim's will always be my first recommendation to prospective and current bird owners .

First things first. If you want to buy a bird in Memphis, this is the guy to see! I'll start with answering a couple of other reviewer's issues. I have to say, I'd be lying if I said I didn't find the smell pretty overwhelming. I did at first, but I got used to it. The place was quite warm inside (it was about 100 outside on the day I went, and probably somewhere around 80-82 inside) and had a pretty strong odor. That being said, I liked it. I liked the selection of birds. I liked the screaming Cockatoo (don't go in here if you have any aversion to loud noise either, that bird's screams are ear-shattering). But most of all, I liked the owner. I found him to be a very honest, personable man with good stories, and a willingness to spend as much time with me as I cared to spend with him. He was very accommodating on bringing birds out for me to handle, and in the end, I went home with a beautiful Cockatiel which my family already adores. I paid $100 for this beauty, but it was a 10 week old hand fed/raised bird, so I didn't find this price to be unreasonable. He also threw in an $8 bag of feed, a big bundle of millet and a cuttle bone... probably $20 worth of stuff. I actually felt a little guilty about it. I can't speak to the rudeness of the "son", I think it was the owner I was dealing with, and in the end, the things that other's didn't like about the store faded away for me due to a really knowledgeable and nice owner with seemingly very well-taken-care-of birds. I told him when I left, that I'd definitely do my best to try and buy supplies from him in the future. Do go back and visit with the screaming Cockatoo when you're there. He's just trying to get your attention :-)

Nothing Jim's son was rude as hell. My advice for you J is to go back and run your own business before your son ruins it. I have made many purchases from Jim himself and found him to be very informative and helpful with my need's. However his son is a spoiled rude little rich boy who thinks because he is busy doing something else that the customer is bothering him. God forbid please do not call or go there unless you want your head taken off and feed to the demons inside that boys head. Damn right it is creepy that devil lives there!!!!!

This place is messy yes, and they don't really have people skills but they take care of the birds very well, have reasonable prices and stand by their guarantee. I would recommending going and checking it out for yourself. You'll bring a new family member home.
