Got our first dog here in 2007, and now our most recent pup as well. "Deandra" (now "Izzy") is the sweetest pea you could ask for, the staff was helpful and allowed us to wander the area after completing our application. I appreciated that they required us to bring our dog from home to meet her prior to allowing us to complete the adoption process, so we all knew that they'd get along well.

We walked in to fill out an application and check out the kitties, but immediately fell in love with one. The adoption process was quick and easy. The staff that helped us were wonderful. They answered all of our questions. They even made sure we had kitten food and a homemade toy before leaving.Loved it!

I love my shelter rescue from here! The employees were great about reviewing my lifestyle and what digs might or might not fit with my life. They didn't try to convince me to get a dog that would not have been a good fit and I ended up with a fantastic buddy!

We had a great experience adopting from the Humane Society. Biscuit was well cared for by them and in great shape. We are grateful for this group of people that cares for pets and would not hesitate to adopt a pet here again!

Amazing staff, these ppl have hearts of gold and run a great place, props to everyone here and giving Shadow a new forever home. Someone finally reached out from the truck stop we found her at, he said she ran away and he couldn't find her and was a truck driver from out of state. She's a yr and a half old, house broken and has a heart of gold, here are some pics he sent of her, "Shadow" she is a blu brindle terrier pit. 🙏🙏🙏

My wife and I have adopted 3 cats from the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. It is clean facility with knowledgeable and friendly staff who care about the animals. We've always had excellent experiences here. My only real complaint is that there are always dogs barking and you can hear them EVERYWHERE. Not sure what they can actually do about that though. During our most recent visit, they switched to only accepting paper copies of adoption forms, instead of the normal electronic ones we filled out for our first two cats. This is a bit inconvenient, but I understand. So come prepared to spend some extra time filling out those forms.

We adopted two of best family members here Peanut Butter cat, and Sid a dog. We couldn’t be happier with our family animals who have integrated themselves into our crazy household! Thank you to the staff at the humane society for being upfront, and honest about what potential difficulties there could be!(there was none lol)

Very helpful staff! Lexy was absolutely phenomenal with helping me get a new barn cat. During the process I got to see many workers in their element interacting with the animals and it was so nice to see the care that they put into it. The animals there are in good hands!

Their new rules suck. We decided to go adopt from another place. It’s dumb that you can only do one appointment for a dog. What if you see a different one you like better? You expect us to drive 30 minutes every time? No thank you. Miss the old way of adopting. When you can walk through.

Adopted my sweet girl a week ago and have had the best transition! I gave her a bath to just be safe before introducing her to my other cat but all is good! Adopt and donate to them if you can:)

Everyone we spoke with/interacted with at both the Humane Society and the associated Cat Café were so kind and helpful! We ended up adopting a 6 month old cat and she is such a joy. Highly recommend!

I found the adoption process for my new kitten surprisingly smooth. The application was easy to fill out, and checking in was very quick. Even the actual adoption portion was easy and the staff were very helpful with the questions I had as a first-time cat owner. Thank you for all you do!

Took home 2 kittens, (siblings) cute little things. proved to be sick, both vomiting a lot, Didn't eat well, they had worms, acted lethargic. Due to the problems we took these sick kittens back. we were not refunded the $50 paid. We sincerely hope those two are well taken care of, and do well.

Adopting from the SF Humane Society was quick and easy. I could tell the staff cares about the animals and wants the best for them. I would highly recommend adopting from here!

You need to specifically ask if the animal you want to see is sick. I sent this email to the front desk after a terrible experience. They called me back and said they would have required my healthy dog to be introduced to the sick one we were looking to adopt but would have told us she had kennel cough first. These people are super irresponsible.Email was as follows:I filled out an adoption application online and received a call today saying it was approved. I called back at 12:15 and said I wanted to see Luna and could I bring my German Shepard? I was told in fact I HAD to bring my other dog for an introduction. My husband, my 10 year old daughter and myself arrived at 3pm with our German Shepard. I told the woman at the desk I was there to see Luna. She gave me a name tag and said to go back and find her. No one was back there to help and we didn't see her so we came back out front. She said we should go back and look at what was available and we said no, we were there to see that one dog. We wait for a volunteer to take us back and the women tells the volunteer the dog is in "sick dogs". That's when we find out she has kennel cough! There is a respiratory virus killing dogs right now. Why would SFAHS not tell me the dog was sick when I called? Instead, as instructed, I brought my healthy dog down there to meet a dog with a highly contagious respiratory disease! At what point, had I not been standing there when she told the volunteer to go to sick dogs, would I have been told the dog is sick? You all need to do better. Today was super upsetting.

My fiancĂ©e went to adopt a dog, the dog seemed fine but you could not tell a dog’s whole personality at a shelter versus at home. All you can do is go off what they tell you the dog is like. They had the dog’s personality marked as “calm, gentle, laidback” which encouraged her more to adopt this dog. It also had said he was good with kids of all ages. This was not the case. We had him a few days, had to return him. We were watching my mother’s dog for a week, did dog introductions outside the house, they were good.A day later, my mom’s dog was laying down sleeping and the dog we had adopted walked by and turned around and attacked my mom’s dog, unprovoked. Bit her face and cut open her eye. We separated them but still didn’t want to just give up on the dog, especially since we wouldn’t normally have another dog around. They had him marked as a calm and gentle dog that was good with kids after all. (To be fair, they said it was unknown how he was with dogs and we had only seen him at the shelter in a kennel around 50 other barking dogs 24/7)A couple days later, he was in the living room and charged into a completely different room at a kid, my dad’s girlfriend’s son, that was looking at our pet chinchilla and attacked the kid, also biting me and my fiancĂ© in the process of trying to get him off the kid. Drew blood on all of us. My fiancĂ©e is 7 months pregnant and the dog attacking a kid who was literally doing nothing but standing there, obviously discouraged us from continuing to try with the dog because we will not be risking his behavior around a baby. This was very upsetting because we felt they misled us tremendously on the dog’s personality and then turned around and put the consequences of the dog’s behavior on us.She went in a week later, this time she was looking at the small animals instead because we both didn’t trust adopting a dog from them any more since they lied so hugely about the dogs behavior and we weren’t comfortable risking it again while having newborn baby in a couple months. She was going to adopt this guinea pig, she grew up having one and we do currently have a happy and healthy chinchilla after all.She went in with no issue at all, nothing said to her. They were even going to let her adopt it then and there, but it was too close to 5:30 which is their cut off time for adoptions. So we drive an hour to go back the next day and get it, this lady stops her and says “your file is a unique situation so we no longer have your application in the system, give me a second to figure this out and I’ll get back to you.” She does whatever she was needing to do and then informed us that because we had brought the dog back, they took her application out of their system because you couldn’t adopt another dog for some time after bringing one back, but since she wanted a small animal instead that it’d be fine she would just have to fill out another application for small animals. She handed her the application, she brought it back couple minutes later, then the girl had us sit down because she had to go check if it was alright with her manager. We sat there for almost half an hour before she came back to tell us we couldn’t adopt a GUINEA PIG because we brought back a dog. “It’s in the contract” the girl says, after she had already told my fiancĂ©e it’d be fine because it was a small animal she was wanting instead. My fiancĂ©e asked why we were the ones getting the consequences of bringing back a dog they had lied about and why they were saying that only now like they weren’t about to let her adopt the Guinea pig the day before. To which, the workers only response was “it’s our policy and we need to be sure you’re ready to adopt again” like we needed to be super prepared to adopt a small, cutesy Guinea pig or as if we would’ve taken the dog in the first place had they not lied on his whole blue information sheet. Very misleading on every aspect, very disappointing. Huge waste of time.

The Sioux Falls Humane Society is a great place to find your life long companion. They have alot of animals to choose from letting you take home a new and grateful member, eager to join the family of that animals dreams, which will makes a great pet for a family. I was aslo able to cremate one of our dogs after 14 years of faithful companionship. What's stopping you from adopting a great animal, which you and your love ones can enjoy for years to come. We have adopted two dogs and they are loyal and they know you saved them, giving them a second chance to live a life of there dreams. Stop at your local Humane Society today. You will not regrete it.

We had a great experience picking out a pet here. The staff was very helpful throughout the process; both while deciding who our new pet would be and in preparing us to care for our new little tyke. Adopt a pet, people!

We adopted our dog Annie on November 20, 2023. She's a great addition to our family! The online adoption application was simple and the approval email came in a timely fashion. The SFAHS staff was great - it's obvious that they feel compassionate and loving toward all the animals in their care. The facility itself is clean and well-maintained. The actual adoption process was quick and easy. We definitely recommend checking out SFAHS for adopting your next pet!

The staff was very polite and friendly. They were more than accommodating, and the work and care they put into our new dog was fabulous. We are happy with our new dog and are glad we made the trip from Rapid City.

I have to rave about the Animal Control team at the Annex and Humane Society for a moment. I have never been there, so it was new for me other than dropping off donations a few times a year. They have absolutely exceptional people working with our Sioux Falls animals. A friend of mine had her pup in the Animal Control Annex for a short time, and I got to see first hand how her pup was SO COMFORTABLE with all the folks that worked with her dog. Her dog is very scared and runs from new people, so I was blown away to see their bond in such a short time! Clearly, she felt she could trust them, and if a dog frightened of new people and warms up so fast to staff... then she definitely knew they were good people.I watched her dog love up on them, and they loved up on her as well! They have a wonderful team that genuinely show the best interests of the animals there: love, respect, and compassion. Outstanding job, you guys! They sure have an amazing staff!

The adoption process has really improved since the last time we adopted! They ask pertinent questions but seem more excited about you adopting than they used to. Adoption prices are lower which is also so nice! Very open to you visiting all animals instead of only the one you came to look at. Excellent, friendly experience!

Recently we had to put to rest our 13-year-old German Shepperd. When the time came, we checked the Humane Society's web site, and found Champ, a 2-year-old Shepperd mix, looking for some place to call home. We filled out the application online, and soon we had our new furbaby. Champ is a great dog. Everyone at the shelter was great. They helped us get acquainted with Champ at the first meeting, and they followed up on his progress getting settled into his new surroundings. Adopting an animal looking for a home is a good feeling, and I would recommend it for anyone looking for a true friend. You will be surprised by how much love they have to offer!!

We couldn't have been more pleased with the whole adoption process! We had the opportunity to visit with the veterinarian in regards to Thumper's kennel cough, which, by the way, has been totally under control with the medication they provided. Also, when we were running late for our meet-and-greet with our golden retriever, Bailey girl, due to the weather, they were all so accommodating and made us feel so welcomed. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience.

My second adoption from the Humane Society, a new buddy for my existing cat. The folks are so kind and helpful with guiding you to just the right fit for your new pet hopes! Here is “Buddy”, one week home! He is a sweet talkative stinker who also loves to snuggle, and he fit right in! Great place to find a new furry family member !
