I live in Rapid City and as I grew up I went to the mall all the time and still do. I loved seeing the puppies and sometimes kittens. I would agree that the living conditions are bad and that the fish tanks can use some cleaning up. I never realized how poor the animal living conditions are and how expensive that the pets are. Now when I go there I see the over priced items and pets and the poor living conditions. I know that some guy wrote a review and said that pet stores don't have to be 100% clean or whatever but seriously!? I think the tank is too dirty when you can't see the fish and you can see some dead ones if you look through the top of it. I think this store needs the humane society called on them; to be shut down and all of their animals taken to the shelter for proper feeding and nutrition, care and living conditions. This pet store isn't even up to code. Why is it still open? They are considered animal abusers because their pets live in conditions so bad that they might as well be living on the streets as strays. They don't allow pictures and I can see why; they probably don't want people posting pictures on the the internet that can get them shut down. I think that someone should go in there with a hidden camera and film this stuff and show it to the humane society, ASPCA or some other animal service. This place NEEDS to be shut down.

I am in FISH HERE whenever I am at the mall...fairly regularly. I don't find them to be a problem. They have always been helpful, and I have even purchases a dog from them. He has always been healthy. They are not a puppy mill. They are not those ones breeding the dogs, they are just the seller. They have a wide assortment of fish and rodents. Maybe the tanks could be cleaner. But the fish are alive and well, so I don't see the issue. I have never seen a lake or stream that is completely sterile. Anyways...give them a chance, and decide for yourself!

This store has puppies hidden in the back of the store that are very likely from puppy mills. Signs brag of the dog's breeds and are all sold for high prices of $250 to over $600. Puppies are crammed into TINY cages the size of my dog's medium sized kennel with very poor ventilation. Out approximately 8 tiny cages with 1-2 puppies per cage, only 1 puppy had a bowl of water. All of the other bowls were bone dry. The dogs had no beds, just urine soaked towels. These dogs look like they are dying to get out of these tiny cages that aren't big enough get adequate exercise, let alone walk more than 3 steps to the other side of the cage. These dogs will likely have socialization issues when they get out and have poor growth and development due to their living situation. The Rapid City Journal wrote an article about the store's selling of puppies from puppy mills in 2011, so why are they still here in 2013 neglecting and exploiting animals for profit?

I would give this store zero stars if I could. I visited Rapid City last weekend with my 8 year old son and my mother. We are from Nebraska and enjoy taking the occasional trip to Rapid to shop. After checking out various stores at the mall my mother told me about the poor conditions in the pet store; that the puppies were in tiny little kennels and two of them had feces on their back ends. My son wanted to see the animals so we all went in. We spent some time looking at the fish and puppies in the left side of the store and then walked around the corner to see the animals on the other side. The first one I saw was a very large, beautiful macaw in one of the kennels. I took my phone out and, making sure the flash was off, I snapped one picture. Before I could even get my phone back in my pocket, an older female employee (maybe the owner or owner's wife?) approached me and *very rudely* said, "We don't allow photography or video recording unless you've been given permission by a store employee. In case you missed all the signs." I was stunned to have been spoken to SO rudely but I informed her that I had not seen the signs. I then held my phone up so she could see, and told her I would delete the picture I had taken and did so while she watched, to which she replied in a childishly snotty tone, "Thank you." It was by far one of the most negative experiences I've ever had in a place of business. I am a respectable, responsible 30 year old woman and was in the store with my son and mother. None of us were causing any kind of problems to justify such a rude scolding, especially not right in front of other patrons. I don't need to be talked to like I'm a child. A simple, "I'm sorry but we don't allow photography in the store," would have sufficed. When I walk into a pet store the first thing that comes to mind is not to search the entire store for posted rules and regulations. I was busy looking at the pets and didn't see the signs. I've never even been into a pet store that had them, but after having gone to this one I can see why they do. The store itself smelled horrible, fish tanks looked gross, and the poor puppies were sometimes stuffed four to one small kennel. Most were lying there listlessly and looked miserable. I was heartbroken just watching them. It's disgusting that stores like this are allowed to keep animals that size in such horrible conditions. None of them had food or water in their bowls. And they're priced so insanely, ridiculously high that I can't imagine they sell very many of them, which means those poor puppies sit in the kennels for God knows how long. It's one thing to ban flash photography, which is a smart thing to do, but to ban taking pictures altogether? That's when you've got something to hide. They can prohibit patrons from taking pictures, but they can't stop people from reporting their poor practices and conditions. I will never step foot inside this store again and will encourage others not to, either. It needs to be closed down. I'm surprised the mall would even want to be associated with such a trashy store. It's such a nice mall otherwise.

I stayed in Rapid City a few years ago when my husband played for Rapid city Rush, i visited this pet store on numerous occasions and was troubled and upset with the animals i saw there, one particular day i went in and saw a tiny springer spaniel puppy who was obviously the runt of the littler, and i fell in love and knew i had to have him, he was given a clean bill of health by a vet and he is now an energentic beautiful affectionate nearly 3 years old dog, he is my world. yes i know what your saying about supporting puppy mills etc but where would this little guy have ended up if i hadn't have brought him home?

The owner has zero customer service skills, talks over you and any question you ask him about the animals somehow insults his intelligence. Seriously, I don't understand how this place exists. If you have any questions about the cleanliness or general welfare of the animals there look at the fish aquariums. About 7 pounds of crustly salt and algae covers everyone. I'd give this place a negative score if possible. I refuse to ever purchase anything from this rathole.

Just went there today. In all honesty, this store needs to be closed. Everything is cluttered, smelly, old, trashy, and animal wise, abused. There are flies everywhere, mainly around the animals. Frankly, it's a scary place. No animals should be living in conditions like that.
