I sure lucked out with this stay. It is a family owned motel with adorable cabins. Very dog friendly with property to walk around. Also very nice is the fact you can park right next to your cabin. There is a city park right across the street if you have a littles. A couple blocks away from the main drag called Mount Rushmore, makes for a peaceful & easy accessibility to the shops, restaurants and everything else in the area. Very friendly and accommodating, you won’t be disappointed..

We had a wonderful stay here, the cabin was cozy and clean, and the hot tub was great after a long day of exploring! Ann was so helpful with showing us what to do in the area and Rena, the dog, was super cute ☺️ We highly recommend staying here.

Our 3 night stay here was absolutely perfect! We live locally, but just wanted to get out of town for a few days. The cabin was great! It was very clean and spacious. I liked being able to use the charcoal grill on the front, covered porch. Ann is a super awesome woman and very pleasant to work with. She is very knowledgeable about local hidden hiking trails and off the path treasures. She even made a phone call for me to a friend of hers about a hiking trail. I will recommend these cabins to anyone. I won't hesitate to stay here again!!

We had a lovely stay over the weekend at these cabins. We were staying with our in-laws, and that included two kids under 5. We all had a wonderful time and loved our accomodations. We found the cabin to be very cozy and it was easy to stay cool in the day and warm at night. The bed was one of the more comfortable ones we have slept in. Everything was very clean. Well behaved dogs are also welcome for a small fee and there is a lovely little park just across the street for recreation/ doggy "duties".The location is fantastic and close to a ton of amazing SoDak attractions. Locally, there are multiple great options for food, drinks, sweets, and shopping. Lynn's Dakotamart is a great little market that met all our needs.Overall, the best part of our stay at Shady Rest was Anne, who was just such a wonderful person to work with! We've never had such great customer service and appreciated the welcome environment at Shady Rest. If you're considering booking, do it now!

We stayed here for one night to see Mt. Rushmore on our way to Washington, was awesome cabin, the owners were the best. Cabin was extremely clean and decorated perfectly. Only problem, we had to keep going west and could not stay longer... Maybe next time. The view as great from the porch swing. We all would like to give the Ann and John a big THANK YOU and God Bless.

The owner, Anne, is very personable and cares about the needs of her guests. She knows the area and can recommend places to sight see and fish. Has an outdoor hot tub, as well as coffee in the morning. If you're looking for a rustic cabin to stay at this is perfect. They've also been renovating some of the cabins. Such as new siding and windows. Great place to stay, been coming for 4 years now. Would definitely recommend it.

The motel is nestled in the hillside overlooking the peaceful town of Custer. Deer were grazing down below our deck in the mornings. The lodge was spacious, yet cozy, and comfortable. Everything was clean and appliances functioned. The location is excellent as a base to experience the Hills. This was my second stay at Shady Rest, and I'm hoping to make it back again some day.

Ann knows the area very well, and gives excellent suggestions for things to do. We felt more like friends than customers. Cabin #8 had a great view, and was cute and clean. It had stairs, and a low ceiling in the loft, which was great for us, but some might have an issue with that, if staying in Cabin #8. Would definitely stay there again, or recommend to a friend. Ask about the excellent local magic show!

Really nice! Attentive hosts with extensive knowledge of the town and surrounding areas, really pleasant accommodations, kitchenette, grills, what's not to love!? The bathrooms are a little on the small side which can prove challenging with children and as a taller human so I'm not really sure how larger framed people will fare but it's manageable. Overall definitely worth a stay!

Very clean, cozy mini-cabins with all the amenities you need to cook, sleep, and bathe. Not advisable if you're traveling with company that you'd like space from. I found the quarters charming and romantic, but wouldn't recommend sharing a cabin on a trip with the in-laws. the compact kitchen had everything you need for simple cooking. The owners were very friendly, and welcoming. I would stay here again if I was in the area.

Cute cozy cabin with great service and recommendations from the owners for area activities that fit our needs! Cabin was well stocked for light cooking and had comfortable beds. Great location near lakes, hiking, and restaurants while being nestled on the edge of Custer. Would stay again!

I absolutely loved it here! The owners were amazing and even had a surprise for us when we got there from Indiana. They helped make our trip even more amazing. These cabins sit on the edge overlooking the town of Custer. Thank you Ann

Adorable little cabins. Small shower. This is a place I can't wait to go back to. Ann who owns the place is very knowledgeable about the area. She sent us out on a day trip to Sylvan Lake for an easy to hike area, and then a drive through the Wilderness Trail. It was one of our best memories from our trip.

The owners are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet anywhere. The cabins were clean and reasonably priced, but the owners themselves are what makes shady rest such a great place to stay. Besides being very gracious and friendly, they are also extremely knowledgeable on the area and a wealth of knowledge. I highly recommend booking your stay here.

We had a “staycation” at the Shady Rest Motel in May 2021. Five family members visited us from IN, so we rented the Hunting Lodge and all stayed together there. We all were very impressed with the set up of the Lodge, the convenience of being so near town and yet feeling the privacy of a cabin in the woods. We enjoyed the convenience of cooking or ordering meals to eat all together in the dining area. The Dvorak family are all so warm and welcoming and helpful. We all definitely recommend The Shady Rest as a destination vacation!

Great place to stay! Ann and John have all of the information you need to have a great experience in the area and they make you feel like family! We planned on staying 2 nights and then requested a 3rd. Our cabin was not available the 3rd night so they moved us to the one next door, and I mean, they literally moved our bags for us while we were out sight seeing. We stayed in cabins 12 and 11. Both are only about 3 years old, kind of like staying in a tiny home. It has everything you need. Custer is so close to all of the sites you want to see! I would highly recommend staying at the Shady Rest Cabins if you are visiting Custer, SD and the surrounding area.

Cute little cabins. Price was right. The owner Ann makes this place awesome. She knows everything about the area and is as friendly as anybody around. She will definitely keep you busy with great ideas. Cabins are comfortable and quiet. Not for everyone though. TV's are very small and the internet is kinda slow.
