Stayed two nights here and overall a very good experience. Nicely equipped campground with a little shop for necessities. We stayed in a tent site with no electricity. Was a very pretty campground with deer, turkeys, a little play area for the kids, a dog run and nice trees. Bathrooms were clean, heated, and accessible easily from our site. Only issue was the site we stayed at had quite a slope and no good flat spot to pitch the tent. We all slid downhill overnight but campground was quiet and sleep decent. Camp fire pit and picnic table provided. Pet friendly and nice spot for the family.

We stayed for a week as a home base as we did all the tourist destinations in the area. The sites are shaded which is not common at most campground in the area. We didn't use the restrooms because we use the one in our trailer, but I did use the laundry room which was clean and had little extras like a book lending area. The employees were helpful and kind. The full hookup site was great. Our site was a little closer to the road than I expected so there was a little road noise, but it wasn't an issue for us since we sleep with the fan on.There were quite a few class A motorhomes and other large campers. It was a little pricier than other places, but it was worth it for all the reasons mention and also to not have any obnoxious neighbors. People were quiet but friendly. We weren't traveling with children but there was a large area for them to play. There was also a dog playground.Well done, Fort Welikit!

We just spent 2 weeks here (end of May, beginning of June) and LOVED every minute of it. It's the perfect location to visit Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, Black Hills National Forest, even Badlands National Park (though it is about 2 hours away). The staff is wonderful - everyone is very friendly and welcoming. On site laundry (although it is on the pricier side), general store, and an awesome playground really made it easy to stay here for 2 weeks. The sites are gravel and sort of unlevel but we loved the whole atmosphere - it was very quiet and the trees are beautiful. We saw deer roaming around the park, a tiny little bunny, and on our last day there were horses right by the playground that were friendly. It was the best spot to spend our time in the Black Hills and we will definitely make it a point to come back soon! I really can't recommend it enough!

I can't say enough good things about this campground after staying for 6 nights. The spots are spacious and the hookups are located in a perfect spot to make things easy. Bathrooms and showers are very nice and clean. They have a nice dog park with two areas sectioned off for big dogs and small dogs. My kids enjoyed the playground that has a fort style construction. The thing that set this campground above others was when we discovered that our cat had snuck out of our truck when we were leaving. We didn't notice him missing until a little ways down the road. We immediately called back to the campground and the staff, camp hosts and owner sprung into action doing everything they could to help find our cat. We we're able to park back in the spot that we had just vacated for an additional night. The owner set multiple live traps in hopes of catching him. Multiple other campers assisted us with looking for him but we were unable to locate him before nightfall. Fortunately he did come back early the next morning and we were able to spare our kids the heartbreak. Our experience was already great but the help that they provided us was so much appreciated by me and my family. I would highly recommend staying here, you will not be disappointed. The Trussell FamilyNearby activities: Close to all the attractions in the area.Safety: Very safe environment, especially for kids.Noteworthy details: The staff will go above and beyond to make your stay the best possible experience.

We were camphosts for the 2023 season.I can't say enough on how Kelly, Steve and his entire family makes sure your well taken care of..they added a second dog park for the little pups, renovated 5 site to give a better camping experience in those sites. If you need something they are on it..they have the best options for camping.. cabins, teepees, barrel kegs, tent, electric tent, w/e 30 amp, 30 amp full h/hu, 50 amp f/hu, and big rig sites..they have worked endlessly to supply you with the best experience. The campground is not your typical parking lot camping..each site is individually unique..it was made around hills, tons of shade trees, and rock formations. Each site is as level as possible. Restroom are individual with shower sink and toilet.. they are very clean. There is a fort playground for the kids that's fantastic. There is a pavilion that can be used for family gatherings. Several reunions are hosted every year..You will have local wildlife visit daily including deer and turkeys. In the spring the new fawns and chick turkeys are born and are adorable. They are centralized to all attractions..perfect location to everything. The several clients that have been repeat customers for years..staying for 6 to 8 weeks..that speaks for it self..everybody loves it.It's very quiet, the store has everything you need. Michelson trail is approximately 1 mile away which can be walked or ride bikes the 114 miles through the mountains. The hospital is 1 mile away.If your in the area, and you need an excellent place to stay..at the best price.. this is where you want to be..It's very family friendly including your dogs and cats.

Update: We came back at the beginning of June 2023. We made our reservations early and asked for the same campsite. We had another absolutely wonderful experience. We so enjoy staying here! It’ll always be our choice when we visit Custer.June 2022: We stayed for four nights the end of June, and hands down, this will be our preferred campground whenever we come to Custer State Park. Our site was level with a full hookup and great for our camper. It’s a lovely campground with lots of shade. The bathroom facilities are extremely nice and the laundry really handy. There’s a convenience store for essentials. Our dog enjoyed romps in the dog park. There’s a great area for kids and families to play games and enjoy the playground. The staff are so friendly and helpful. It was a terrific base to come back to each night after exploring the park.

We were in South Dakota for a week. We spent a couple of nights at the KOA near Mt. Rushmore, but wanted to try multiple sites/areas. When we arrived for our four night stay here we were right off the highway. The campsites were small. Our five year old sat at the picnic table that was on the side of a hill while we were trying to park the camper, the picnic table slid down the hill. The fire pit was in the same place, on the side of a hill, and would not have accommodated chairs sitting around it. While we only have a 25' camper, the site was tight/narrow with minimal space to put chairs, etc. We asked for a different site, but it backed up to the highway and was not any bigger. We were disappointed to say the least. We did go to the front desk, but all they offered was the optional site. We decided to leave as it seemed there was no other option. When I emailed to complain about the site as stated on the website and ask for a refund, I received the following email "I have spoken with my staff and it appears you did not ask to speak to a manager or the owner, both of whom were on site. I understand you did speak with the office lady who attempted to offer you an open site, the only other site open, and that is all she would have been able to do. That is her customer service ability, managers and owners have the ability to offer much more customer service but when you just drive off there is absolutely no chance for you to receive this. In reference to the site, that site holds 45 foot 5th wheels, many of whom stay in it for multi-week stays. It was more than adequate for your small rig. When it comes to picnic tables guests move them all the time to where they would like them, and if they ask we are happy to send up staff to put them where you feel they work best with your rig. If your table had been relocated by a past guest it very well could not be in the best location for your needs. It is very difficult to offer any resolution when you have left the park with no communication." When we went to the front desk to complain, we were not told that management was on site, we were only offered an optional site. I am not one to complain typically, but I feel like the customer service here was poorly handled. I would not return to this site for two reasons: 1) although they were nice on check in, the customer service failed when we were unhappy. 2) the sites were narrow, close together, allowed minimal room for chairs and tables, the fire pit was on the side of a hill, and not really appropriate for families with small children.

Very friendly folks. Campsites large and well shaded. Full hookups. Best bathrooms in our 6 weeks of camping around the country! Very convenient location as well. Custer is a pleasant town to visit. Be sure to go to Bakers Cafe and Bakery!

Added to review after response from business owner:You said we left a "poor" review. We certainly did not!! We left a 3 star review, which is a rating for a perfectly acceptable campground. 4 or 5 star reviews are exceptional reviews for exceptional businesses or establishments, and, if a reviewer is honest, not everyone deserves 4 or 5 stars. Your campground is certainly nice, and we were complimentary. Not everyone earns the gold medal. However, for your technician not to be able to enter our trailer to help us with cable means that for many problems, he can't help. The experienced RV'er who helped us said HIS rig has never had any problems with cable on his trip, and they have been on the road for weeks, using cable, and HE ALSO had to plug his cable in through his window. He said he has not had to do this anywhere else. It was HIS opinion that this was an issue with the campground cable. We have never had any issue whatsoever with water pressure at any other campground, and we have been on the road for 5 weeks. Our neighbor also agreed, he said his water pressure was poor as well, so that's why we didn't ask about it. If others are having problems with the water pressure, it's a system-wide campground thing, and you probably can't do a quick fix. Finally, we only needed 30 amp back in, so perhaps that's why the charge was higher than we have paid at other campgrounds, but please note, your campground is definitely pricey for very few amenities compared to other campgrounds in the area. Thank you.Original Review:We stayed 4 nights at this heavily-wooded, shady, pretty campground.Pros: Reservation and check-in efficient and easy. People in front office very nice. Cute store. Solid WIFI. Nice laundry room. These are the Black Hills, so the campground is hilly. They’ve done a good job making most of the sites pretty level, but some are better than others. Close to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial and the Town of Custer.Cons: 1. Water pressure is terrible! I am a woman with short hair, and I wouldn’t have been able to wash my hair in the dribble of water we had. 2. In addition, we were unable to hook up our cable. We asked for help at the office. They immediately sent out a very nice gentlemen who told us to plug in our cable in a different port, but that did nothing to help. He said insurance issues prohibited him from coming into our trailer to help further. So with his “help” nothing improved. It was only because of our very nice neighbors, who offered to help us, that we were able to hook up to cable. It actually took our neighbor, a very experienced RVer, over an hour to figure out how to solve the problem. We eventually had to plug the cable cord directly into our TV through our window. Thank you to our nice neighbors! What we’re saying here is that the Campground people provided next to no help on an issue the Campground really should be helping you with! 3. There is VERY LITTLE to do at the Campground if you choose to spend a day not visiting local sites. There is no swimming pool. At $63 a night, we would have expected a few amenities.

Absolutely beautiful camping spot. Really great folks, super helpful and friendly. Solid electric and water hookups. Clean, well-maintained bathrooms/shower house. Well-stocked camp store...Really, it's everything you want in a campground.Oh, and horses and deer walk right up to the fence pretty regularly. So there's that too.Nearby activities: Super close to Crazy Horse, 30 minutes from Mt Rushmore, seconds from Hill City... All the attractions are drivable.

We booked this RV Park based on a recommendation we got on a FB camping page and other reviews. They are in a wonderful location so near to Custer SD and Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse etc. The sites, laundry and all was neatly maintained. We weren’t crammed to together. If you’re visiting the Black Hills you need to check this place out. Funny name. Serious management.

Steve and Kelly run a very well maintained, clean, shady, and quiet campground. The location in the Black Hills makes easy access to Custar State Park, Crazy Horse Monument, Mt. Rushmore, and the Mickelson Rail Trail. The sites are level, nestled under pine trees and the bathrooms and laundry are clean. Steve and Kelly are very helpful, friendly and know the area well. Steve helped troubleshoot our cable connection issue and what he can't fix, he refers to an excellent RV mobile repair service called GK Mobile RV Service Repair which we also used and with whom we were very satisfied. We camped here for close to three weeks and highly recommend this campground.Safety: Steve and Kelly monitor who enters the campground.

We stayed here for 4 nights/5 days and I can honestly say it was amazing. Nice clean shower houses, super friendly staff, and a cute little gift shop. We had bad luck and the transmission went out on our pickup so we were stranded 6 hours from home. The owner went above and beyond to reassure we could park our camper and/or pickup in an area off grounds until we could get it towed. He assured us not to worry so the rest of our trip wasn’t ruined. So impressed with this campground that we will def be back when in the area! Thank you for the amazing stay!

We absolutely loved this campground. It is small, but quiet and has a lot of trees. Great area for dogs and is close to Custer, without feeling like you are that close. They have great WIFI and the digital cable was fantastic. We plan on getting reservations and stay for a week next year. Two nights was not enough.

This IS the place to stay in the Black Hills!!!! Awesome and attentive owner, Steve, keeps the grounds and facilities in tip top shape! His group of retirees are engaging, friendly and helpful - and work to keep restrooms, laundry, etc. immaculately clean! Steven even helped direct my husband getting our camper into its cozy spot (helping avoid the typical couple - snipping that would have occurred without his assistance)! The campground has everything you might need at reasonable prices and is very, very quiet. Its location makes it easy to get to all of the NW SD area sights and attractions. The pine tree filled grounds are often visited by turkeys and deer enhancing the stay there! Make sure to follow the directions provided for getting there to avoid low clearance and narrow tunnels. Custer is very conveniently located provided additional amenities such as gas stations, grocery & hardware stores as well as other types of establishments. We WILL be back and we're disappointed to leave for another campground in WY.

A wonderful campground! We stayed for 5 nights and used it as our base for seeing all the sights - it is in a convenient location very close to Custer State Park, a short drive to Mount Rushmore, Needles, Lake Sylvan, etc. It is just over a mile to the town of Custer that has shops, several restaurants, and a grocery store. The campground has RV sites with full hookups, tent sites, and cabins. Sites were spacious enough and the park is filled with trees. There’s a campground store with helpful, friendly staff. There is also a unique playground that my kids enjoyed. We were sad to leave and would definitely recommend Fort Welikit to others traveling to the area!

The campground is very quiet and camp sites are nicely shaded. It is very beautiful with deer running thru regularly. The cons were our cabin was a bit dirty and the air conditioner was extremely loud and inconsistent. We also only had one coffee filter and trash bag. We were given more coffee filters upon request but were denied any extra trash bags. We had to purchase our own. Very little cooking equipment. I may have high expectations, but I think expecting the cabin to be stocked appropriately is not unreasonable.I would also add it would of been nice to have play equipment geared towards little ones.Might be better if you stay in your own camper. I just don't think I should have to beg and borrow for things for a place I paid to rent.

Beautiful campground run by an amazing family! If you are visiting near bike week you will need to book far in advance as it will book up and please remember it’s sturgis bike week you will hear noise of motorcycles at all times. If this isn’t for you, you may want to plan a different time to visit this amazing place in such an amazing area. Well kept and clean.

This campground is great! Lots of trees for shade. It’s a beautiful area . Some reviews complain about the trees and sites. I don’t know why anyone would complain about the trees….it’s the black hills so what do you expect. They make the scenery beautiful and provide shade against the hot sun. Like many parts of the country there are higher temperatures and drought so maybe not as green as one would like. It’s out of the control of the owners. All of the staff were wonderful and friendly. The dog park was great as we had our 2 dogs with us. The sites were spacious and well kept. The little store was super cute and provided us with our basic needs. We were happy that we were allowed to use the fire pit since it’s so dry out. This park is located close to custer, hill city and keystone. Not too far from Mount Rushmore and other attractions. If you want something extremely fancy this isn’t the park for you. It’s really nice but there’s no pool, restaurant, bar, etc. It has a nice dog park and play ground. We personally don’t need all of the extra stuff and are ok with the basic necessities. We will definitely stay here again!

It's my absolute pleasure to recommend Fort Welikit Family Campground to anyone visiting the Black Hills in South Dakota. This is our fourth time staying here. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy the campground. The owners and staff are superb and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. They are beyond friendly and do anything they can to help you if necessary. The grounds and facilities are exceptionally kept and maintained. Fort Welikit Family Campground is the only place for us when we visit the Black Hills. To the owners and staff, thank you. It is hard to find people who care as much as you do.

Good little campground. More space than a lot of the roadside places you’ll find in the Black Hills, plus trees for shade. We stayed in a tent, the tent loop was separate from the campers, which I liked. Plenty of facilities, all pretty clean whenever my family needed them and they’re cleaned every afternoon. My kids enjoyed the playground. Firewood and ice offered on site.
