Paid $200 for a puppy when just 2 weeks later she would’ve been $100 since not considered a puppy anymore then… they could’ve gave us a discount but nope , they did give us a voucher for a free pizza at the papa John’s near there though so I guess that was nice .. and a voucher for a pet tag to be made at some small shop I forgot the name of. The dog however was full of fleas and malnourished, I would say damn near a skeleton when we got her. A week after she was so sick she wasn’t wanting to eat we had to get a special vitamin that came in a tube for her to eat something eventually she came to herself. She became a bit much to handle while I was pregnant and no I didn’t know I was pregnant until after purchasing her otherwise the purchase would’ve never been made but anyways I did have a moment of wanting to return her but the surrender fee is $50 and there is a waiting list .. I feel a return should not be charged at the time since it was 1 month of having her smh but anyways I ended up keeping her. The vet paperwork she came with said she was a retriever mix .. the lies she most definitely is not! We also believe she was much younger than what she was said to be on paper cause she didn’t have her teeth all the way in yet .. anyways she is now flea free and living her best life thickems and all ! She has been a handful but that is the territory of having a small dog, they need attention which she gets plenty of just now has to share since I now have my child to take care of. Here is before and after pics of her coming from the shelter to over a year later of her being with us. She is now 1 year and going on 2 months old according to her paperwork

First off,Thank you staff for doing your best with helping people and animals in need !!Didn't expect perfect times are tough 10/2023. For the fee 80$ bucks (big dog).. wow you get it all! VALUE!!!!!! and a heart !~Reviewed website general tab for small animals ( scroll down past cat photos, dogs appear ) hard to find. Picked 3, over 30 pound dogs to see.Enjoyed being greeted, working with Eric (Manager) was also training others (talent people). Great for me a professional experience.Visited Human Society about 3 times before I chose Gus (now Lebowski).“Adopted as a teen dog from Spartanburg Humane Society (10/2023). Was given little to no info. on him ( Stray w spike collar) except info which I did not witness food aggressive, would eat my cat. I see at this point classic Shepherd guard instinct , good in the home, must and do exercise (ball, hike, some social). He has webbed feet, fawn in color ,faint black on muzzle and saddle area.He is a joy and a wonderful dog friend....work in progress.

We adopted our sweet kitty, Ellie, from here at the beginning of the year. She was so shy when she first came home with us but now that it's been a couple of months she is the funniest, sweetest cat I've ever met. I'm so happy that I get to spend a lifetime with her! Thank you SHS for introducing me to this sweet angel!

We had the greatest experience with Spartanburg human society, they introduced us to our sweet little Priscilla, that we adopted. The team @ the human society were wonderful to work with. Thanks to all who helped us get our precious little fur daughter.🐾♥️

First, the workers there have such a sad personality and rude. I adopted a kitten about two weeks ago. Crodie was with us until one morning we checked on him and he was dying. Rushed him to the vet and they said there’s a possibility it’s FIP. The situation did not look like there would be a good outcome. He was very sick and all the symptoms pointed to FIP. I read on a separate review this isn’t the first time someone has took home a kitten and it died from FIP. Such a heartbreaking moment for me and my family he was the cutest.

Highly unsatisfied with our experience. We adopted our kitten (kitkat) a week ago. We immediately noticed she was developing a cough, reached out and they gave us doxycycline (this is why I didn't give 1 star) shortly after this We noticed little girl was scratching alot, then we noticed our other 2 cats started scratching more... Upon giving the kitten a flea bath, we noticed she was infested with fleas. We HAVE NEVER HAD A FLEA ISSUE IN OUR HOME. Now we are having to have ALL our furniture treated and upscaled care for the cats until the fleas are gone. Upon calling the humane society, I had one employee be downright rude saying "it's not from us, she was on treatment the entire time here" how about the fact she was in a cage, with 3 kittens, and 1 litter box that absolutely in need of a cleaning. We came here because a few friends spike very highly of this place, but we didn't no receive that experience.

I got a kitten from here. We had him a little over a year. His name was Kasey. He was the sweetest most precious pet I ever had. He ended up getting fip. My family and I had to do the hardest thing ever yesterday and have our baby put to sleep. We are all heartbroken. He was very loved and we miss him like crazy. I don’t regret getting him. He was the best pet I have ever had. Now, I look at these reviews it saddens my heart to know this is possibly the place he got it from. He was the only cat we had in our house. I pray for any family that has or is going through what my family is facing at this moment.

Found a stray dog that had been roaming around my neighborhood. Whenever I took my dog outside it would try to be aggressive towards her and we'd have to go back inside. Finally after a week the dog was on my front porch. She was nice to me but was aggressive towards my dog and cat. I took her to the Humane society who wouldn't take her in. They told me that since I picked her up and brought her that she is now our dog. This place is a joke. If you don't shelter animals in need then why have a job there.

Used to be a very friendly place to go. Visit the animals if for nothing else. But now it feels like you have to make an appointment just to see an animal that you're interested in. But then finally they do take you to a meeting room and takes away the option of looking at all. The sad faces of these poor animals stuck in there. But other than that, you do the best, you can with what you've got.

They would not take a cat. Instead they sent us around the world. I do not want to leave the cat alone in the world but I cannot keep it in my house. It is the most heartbreaking thing to do - to leave a poor kitten in the cold and rain so as of now he is ours. Hopefully we can find a place for him soon.

This is the only way I'll adopt pets from now on, courteous staff, all the pets are spayed/neutered before they are available for adoption and are current on their immunizations. Adoption process is easy to complete and you get to choose from animals that are accustomed to human interaction.

Adopted a cat from here around November of last year every since then I've been having major issues with the cat, I've tried everything I could. From furniture damage, floor damage, wall damage and much more. I contacted spartanburg humane 3 months ago about being added to a wait list to return the cat. I also emailed the same person to update my phone number to contact me two months go by I'm calling - no answer , emailing - no response and now it's the 3rd month and the problem is still continuing!

I have never been to a Humane Society to get a pet. This is my story, in the last 25 years I’ve had up to 8 cats all of whom have been given to me or have just showed up. My last cat, my favorite Teddy passed away in September. He was 17. I told myself I didn’t want any more pets. As these past five months have gone by something was off, my husband noticed it. I needed a pet after all they do give you unconditional love and a lot of entertainment. So the search was on. I looked at ads. thought about buying a fancy cat, but then the Epiphany moment occurred to me, “get a cat that no one wants”.I went to the Spartanburg, Humane Society, most everyone there volunteers, that says something. I explain to them that I wanted a cat that was loving and sweet as I watch two very young grandchildren through the week Mindy, who works at the desk, checking people out, and she’s thorough and good at what she does, she suggested a particular kitty that had been found with his two sisters very sick and pitiful. The Humane Society, which works on donations by the way, wink wink, nursed these kitties back to good health. She suggested to me a little gray tabby. His name was Marley. They took me to the greeting room for me to see him, and he immediately ran to my lap and purred and snuggled me. He was six months old. I never looked at another cat. Mindy sure knew what she was doing. The other girls would suggest kitties, and then decide that might not work for my specific situation. They care very much for you, as well as they care for the animal that they will place with you.If the pet is old enough to be fixed, that pet will come home with you fixed with all his shots ready to go, if it’s young you get to bring him back and have him fixed it’s in the cost of the donation. These volunteers love on all the animals, pet them, give hugs which helps them to become more loving before they come to your house. Mindy really loved on Marley a lot, so much so she cried when he left everyone should go to the Humane Society be at the Spartanburg Humane Society or another. Their paperwork it thorough they come with a microchip, rabies shot and the tags to go with it.Always get your pet from the Humane Society. They’re the ones no one wanted, but somehow they know you wanted them and they’ll spend their lives appreciating you for it.

I adopted Toby .. a 10 year old cockapoo. He is the best additional to my life! Toby is constantly wagging his tale, going on hiking adventures and wanting pets from every we walk past. He is fully house trained, does not bark and is the easiest dog in the world.A lot of people don't give senior dogs a thought when adopting but he is such an angel and full of life. I'm happy he's my best friend. Thank you Spartanburg Humane Society.

We just moved to town and wanted to check out the local humane society. We are excited to bring a few rescues into our new home as soon as we get settled. It was quite different from others we have been too. It was smaller and had different rules. I will say though, that the staff seemed very involved and caring. The front desk answered lots of questions and explained why they do things the way they do, saying that it was best for the animals given what they learned from Covid. It was a good experience overall. Glad they are there to help the sweet furbabies who need them. We are looking forward to bringing some of those sweet furbabies into their furever home. 😁❤️🐈🐈⬛️😸

I've been waiting to surrender 2 stray dogs since August 16, 2022. The last time I checked with them in person was in July. Only to be told I was 35 on the list. When I call, the lady that answers isn't helpful and redirects the call to lost and found. There's no one there unless you go in person. I work during their time of operations and they refuse to tell me where I am on the list unless I go there. I can't continue taking care of these stray dogs. When I asked if I could make an appointment to euthanize them. They said they couldn't do that and hung up on me.I haven't put them down like old yeller. Their a pitbull mix, the male has fleas and the female has worms (which is being treated). Been wanting to find them a forever home.

Went and got Flea Meds for my sisters dog. I can't go in to see all the animals because it makes me sad and I want to adopt them all. I wish everyone would adopt their animals from here.

Coming on here to amend my previous 5-star review. While the people we encountered were pleasant and helpful the day of our animal adoption, the service since has been less than. My wife reached out on two separate occasions about bringing our newly adopted kitten to be seen by the vet on staff. On each occasion, she heard nothing in response! On top of that, our personal vet was surprised the kitten was even adopted out as it was still dealing with an upper respiratory infection. I understand the desire to help wonderful animals find forever homes, however, the service provided has left me questioning overall intentions of the staff. I would have rated lower, but as I said the people the day of our adoption were helpful and kind, so that does count for something.

The staff here were some of the nastiest people I have ever come into contact with! Not an ounce of personality, very rude and short and very obviously miserable working at SHS. The only kind faces I saw were people volunteering! I have heard this but figured it was a rumor or people just had experienced someone having a bad day. I am here to tell you that no matter what, if you are calling to ask a simple question, inquire about donating/volunteering or going in person to do business with them that you will 100 percent meet some of the most miserable human beings you've ever come into contact with. Even if you are sweet and friendly you will be met with blank stares, dirty looks, attitude and be made to feel like you are a huge inconvenience. I never leave reviews, but I am in such shock over the staff at this place that I had to add to the hundreds of similar negative reviews. For the love of God, employ nice, happy, polite people who smile and can properly interact with others. The staff at SHS should be ashamed of themselves for how they make people who call or walk through their doors feel with their completely unnecessary nasty attitudes!

UPDATE: JUST ONE MONTH after adopting our 5-month-old kitten it is with a very heavy heart I am reporting he was diagnosed with FIP. it is incurable with only black market treatments available at this time. There is no reliable test for this however there are almost always symptoms and indicators that point toward the infection. We had to make the heartbreaking choice to have him humanely euthanized before his suffering became more intense. my family is going through the loss of him much sooner than we should have had to.Really disappointed in shs. I adopted a puppy 15 years ago my experience was awesome then, before they separated from the county. My family went recently and looked at kittens. Did all the responsible things such as asking questions regarding his health history and even pointed out a questionable bald spot on his leg bc we have other animals at home, 2 young kids, and my husband is immunocompromised. We were told he'd had 2 uri's in the past but was all clear and the bald spot was mostly likely a hot spot. Once he got home he was sneezing and had watery eyes in a matter of an hour and the bald spot was really suspicious to me. Sitting down looking through his paperwork they checked the bald spot with a woods lamp and it checked negative for ringworm glow HOWEVER not all ringworm shows up using the lamp and the possibility of ringworm was never mentioned. Also upon further digging this kitten had been continuously on antibiotics, virisidals, and topical eye antibiotics for OVER 2 months! They neutered him and put him on the adoption floor at first sign of it possibly clearing without making sure he was fully clear and sent his 2 visibly sick litter mates back to the sick area! On top of all of this I'm supposed to bring him back for his fiv/felv combo test after he's 6 months which makes zero sense because these things will show up at 3 months and can be an underlying cause of recurrent uri! I called 2x and emailed to try to have him seen and schedule a time for his combo test and 3 business days later I Still haven't heard back! Also their included "free 30 days of pet insurance" is a Joke. After all of the fine print you have to sign up to pay for pet health insurance be it yearly or monthly and you get 29 days of my pet is about to die and 15 days of anything else AFTER a $250 deductible! Dont get me wrong I am aware pets come with expected expense but when adopting they should come with free 30 days at the shelter at least! Esp if it's clear as friggin day they left there with issues that weren't addressed or discussed! After a visit at our regular vet (4 days after adoption) he's on another round of antibiotics and we are pending a proper ringworm test $250 later! Waiting to see if we have to spend even more to treat everyone! Praying he doesn't get my healthy cat sick even though he's isolated and praying we all don't end up with ringworm. The staff my family met (2 people) has their heart in the right place but the lack of communication and thorough care to be sure pets being adopted out are as healthy as possible was subpar and disappointing. We will not adopt from here in the future.

I believe everyone should have a friend:) Went with my adult son, who adopted a cat. I love the staff they had available. Including a pretty young kid. Great learning and growing experience for the young. The place was clean, staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The process of adoption went smoothly.Take a moment to browse the leashes, collars, harnesses, toys, and books. Proceeds benefit the animals in their care.

The team at SHS did a tremendous and thorough job helping my Mom find a new companion. We made a long list of dogs we wanted to see from the website and they reviewed and culled down the list based on my Mom's needs and what they knew about the dogs size and demeanor. We went into a room and they brought in 6 dogs but couldn't find a match until the woman thought of the "oldest fella". Mom loved him! The team lined up to say goodbye and give him ear rubs.. Several actually cried. The building may be a little old and smelly but the warmth and care of the people inside outweigh that. Please go by and get a dog or car... Or even a rabbit. Your heart will be warm!!
