I came in yesterday looking for a cat and first of all the staff was beyond amazing. They were all so kind, so knowledgeable and friendly. The man who showed me the cats, regrettably I forgot his name, was so kind and you could tell he really cared and I love that. He brought in Siam and I absolutely fell in love with this lil wide eyed cat. He told me about her background and how she had been labeled as under socialized and just said she was misunderstood (I later learned he had been coming in on his days off to see her and bring her out of her shell how freaking sweet) we came back later in the day for my friends who brought me to get the cat so they could adopt a dog they had been playing with while they were waiting on me named Gizzard and he is an absolute angel. I cannot thank these humans enough especially the kind man who went out of his way with Siam and this incredible shelter who gave these babies so much love and attention before they found their forever homes. Thank you so much.

Everyone there is amazing. My cat almost died because other vets turned me away due to only having 50 bucks to my name at the time. They saved her life. I will be forever grateful.

I pre-judged them and I apologize for that. Having seen the facility and meeting the management, I see that they are fully committed to the animals that come to them. After much work on my part and the shelters part, a beautiful cat was saved. I am grateful for their efforts as every other shelter and sanctuary refused to do anything of value for the cat. The shelters and sanctuaries elsewhere could learn a lot from this shelter on how to provide an enriching stay for animals.

I was initially excited about the opportunity to volunteer and gain insights into the organization's operations. However, I must express my disappointment with the interview process, which lacked the professionalism I anticipated. While I appreciated the convenience of the virtual interview, it did not delve into my background or qualifications, creating an initial impression of disinterest from the interviewer. The majority of the interview focused on a detailed overview of job responsibilities, leaving little room for a substantive discussion about my potential contribution to the organization. It felt more like a continuous request for questions about the information he was sharing with me.Regrettably, the interview experience was further hindered by the interviewer's frequent and disruptive coughing, impacting effective communication. Despite this, an invitation to volunteer and familiarize myself with the role was extended at the end of the interview. In my follow-up email, I conveyed my best wishes for the interviewer's recovery from the apparent health issue and reiterated my enthusiasm for learning more about the posted position. Unfortunately, I did not receive a response.I harbor no ill feelings toward the company itself. I believe the Charleston Animal Society does an excellent job caring for animals. However, I was surprised by the lack of professionalism during this process and expected at least an opportunity to explore the potential role further after our initial discussion. While all is well, this experience has led me to reconsider applying here in the future. I wonder if I did not align with the demographic they were seeking.

I adopted two kittens, but I was only given one bag of litter and one bag of food. I was also told that the bag of dry food that I received was the best thing for my cats. Upon further research I found out that my cats can get severely dehydrated by eating dry food And it’s also full of carbs cats don’t need that can lead to obesity. I switched them to a wet food diet. They even told me don’t give my kittens wet food because it’s bad for them and dry food is the best option. Of course, I found out that this was not true, and it was literally the exact opposite of what I was told!!! Full of carbs, and no good for cats. They don’t seem to care about the safety of pets at all. I think it’s also pretty distasteful to expect me to use one bag of food and one bag of litter for two kittens. Please feed your cats, wet food cats need hydration they get hydration from their food. Do not listen to these people they do not care about the well-being of your cat. If you want your cat to have weight problems and kidney problems, go right ahead and listen To these people. I CHECKED THE CAT FOOD DATABASE ONLINE THE FOOD THEY RECOMMENDED IS TERRIBLE!! Not to mention the sign said one price but they chafed me 3 times that to adopt!!! Go somewhere else!

10/10!!! Staff is AMAZING!!!! Just picked up my Lucy from her Spay Surgery. The surgeon and staff fell immediately in Love with her. They made sure she was comfortable & the facility was very clean. A huge and wonderful Shout out to Charleston Humane Society who were both affordable compared to $900 for this surgery and only charge 1/3 price plus they were just as nice as they could be to us. Which is rare these days but so appreciated 💙 I recommend to anyone seeking spay/neuter or adoption to DO SO HERE!!!

Dropped off 4 strays (1 mom, 3 kittens) that I’ve been caring for so they could get vaxxed and spayed. They dropped off the first 2 i left with them without notifying me and mixed up the mother with some other cat. After i told them this they insisted that the mother was only 3 months despite me caring for her for over half a year and said they cannot/will not fo anything until I bring in the other random stray to them. Very disappointed on how they could’ve possibly mixed up since they look nothing alike. 1st pic is mom and 2nd is the last i saw of the stray

We got our cat here, and the service was awesome. Everyone we talked to was so genuine and passionate about finding these animals their perfect home. They gave us an in depth background on each animal. Highly highly recommend

This place is the best! They are a no kill shelter that has set the example, and paved the way for other shelters in the area to do the same. They take such good care of the animals that come through here, and save so many lives. They also have a wonderful foster program, where volunteers take animals home and care for them until they are able to be adopted. If you have some time and love to spare go in and talk to them about their foster program.

Where I’ve always gone to get my cats neutered. They’ve always treated me so nicely & have took very good care of my boys. It’s a good drive for me but completely worth it considering the staff is so caring & take such good care of my fur family. 💖

Ther are lots of cute and cuddly animals just waiting for the right person to give them a home. As an animal lover it was nice to know this is a no-kill rescue shelter. The inside was very clean as were the cages where the animals are housed. When that animal picks you and melts your heart, you can get acquainted in one of their side rooms. Outside facilities and fenced play yards make sure our 4 legged friends get excerise as well as interaction with other dogs.

The CAS is such a wonderful organization, and it's the most beautiful shelter I've ever visited! The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I'm currently fostering a dog and plan to foster other animals as needed.

My dog is missing and I called them first thing this morning asking for help. They wouldn’t give any information over the phone which is fair. I drove up there immediately. When I got there it was 40 degrees outside and the lady at the desk said I had to stand in the line outside to get a form, she was very nice. I went outside and forms were handed out to women with no problems that did not look like me. They even had several minutes worth of conversation and I didn’t even get a hello. I stood there and for a second while wondering if I were invisible. I had people looking at me but no one acknowledging my presence. I then rang the bell since the 3 women sitting there looking at me didn’t realize I needed help. Ringing the bell made me more invisible. No one budged again. I then walked back inside because now I’m freezing and invisible and the 3 women working must have clocked out. I then asked the very nice young lady on the inside if she could get the application form because the 3 women sitting at the desk conversating did not want to interrupt their conversation to help find my missing dog. I was then able to at least get that part done. I went back over to the conversating women with the form and I was rudely told you have to wait because someone is ahead of you, just by handing her the form. I didn’t ask anything initially. I’ve never been through this process before so I didn’t understand why everyone was so rude and hostile. Any who, when it was my turn a 4th individual came out and called my name. Once I stood up she immediately turned around and started walking the opposite direction. I immediately followed not knowing the process again. We then walked into several dog pods and she walked really fast without saying a word to me ( I broke my hip a year ago so it was pretty fast for me to keep up). We walked at least 5-6 pods without a peep. When it was over she opened the final door to let me out and handed me 2 sheets of paper, still no words involved, which I thought was very odd. I decided to go back later to check again later that day, the same hateful behavior from the same individuals. In the middle of the walk this time she was able to speak this time and say to my wife she wasn’t allowed to walk with us and immediately kicked her out. I’ve adopted several animals from this location and had services done while never dealing with this type of issue. I already felt terrible about my dog and that made the situation worse. Note to Charleston SPCA, please teach your workers to be kind to everyone, even if they do not look like them. I could have used some kind words today even a smile would do. It was very uncomfortable what I experienced and had to deal with in my time of heartache. Your lost and found department needs people with more compassion that loves everyone and wants to help, instead of spreading hate. At the end of the day it’s about getting the animals back home to stop the overcrowding. Many people will turn away when treated this way. I pray no one else has experienced this because you need all races to help with the continuing struggle to find homes for these animals.I would also like to mention another lady who looked like them was a customer apologized for their behavior when she seen I was being overlooked and being treated differently than her and others. I went to Dorchester Paws and Berkeley SPCA and they were amazing. If I ever adopted again I will surely use Dorchester or Berkeley instead unless Charleston retrains their associates on diversity.

An amazing shelter. I adopted a puppy from them a year ago and it's been a great time. The adoption process was very quick and easy and they take care of absolutely everything. My dog came spayed, vaccinations up to date, microchipped, and with a bag of food to boot! The facility itself is very clean and orderly and the staff is very helpful. I would absolutely adopt from them again.

This place is well cared for. They even have a trap/fix/release for the community, which me and my neighborhood have greatly benefited from. The staff has been kind and helpful to me even though I'm usually asking them to take and find a home for another kitten. The charges for adoption go back into the programs that this particular shelter offers, please keep that in mind when you adopt. These animals are living in a way nicer building than many other animals in shelters.

We adopted our dog, Timber, last year from the Charleston Animal Society (CAS). He was found alone on the side of the road at only 3 weeks old. CAS took him in and fostered him until he was ready for adoption. He became sick the day after we brought him home. They were amazing and instantly brought him into their clinic and evaluated him, gave him fluids, and medicine to help him recover. We noticed when he was a little older that he had some fear anxiety and aggression. I called and they recommended a wonderful behaviorist/trainer that came to our home to evaluate him. We were able to work with her to help him overcome his fears and become a great family dog. They are a wonderful part of our community and truly care for the animals.

Absolutely the best experience in adopting a pet. The people were so friendly and really cared about making sure the fit was best for both owner and animal. Everything was accessible for the things you need to bring home your new family member. I now have have the most precious cat. Thanks to all who helped so much.

My family had adopted two animals here, a dog and a cat. Our experience was better with the dog as she had heartworm and the staff was more attentive to her health problems and was more keen on making sure she stayed out of the shelter. They had told us that they were able to give her frequent check ups in the event that any health complications arise. We were given months to inform them of any health issues. On the other hand, it seems like the staff doesn't care much about the cats that they send home. We had adopted our first cat in September 2023 and they noted that he suddenly stopped eating the day that we adopted him. They wrote it off as him just being anxious when it was actually the first signs of what killed him two months later. They gave us a total of 10 days to inform them of anything wrong but afterwards, we were on our own. They continued to assure us that our cat would be fine and that nothing was wrong and tried to get us to purchase insurance from a terrible company. They didn't bother to do a final wellness check before sending him home with us, even when (at the time that we adopted this cat) all of the cats in the shelter caught some form of upper respiratory infection. When our cat got home he was getting better but only before he continued to get worse. By the time that the 10 days had passed, our cat fell more sick than before. It was only a matter of time before he eventually passed due to the negligence of the staff and not doing their due diligences of informing us prior that we were bringing home a sick pet. If you're thinking about adopting a cat from this shelter, be extremely cautious. They don't care and were willing to overlook most of the cats health conditions for the sake of getting them out of their shelter. Given our past experiences with the shelter with our dog, we were willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. But it is absolutely inexcusable that a good cat died for nothing only because of their lack of attentiveness to his condition.

We have fostered many times through The Charleston Animal Society. They send us with all the supplies we need, any numbers to call for different situations, and have even been so helpful when I was sick to get food to my fosters. My parents adopted one of my foster babies. Love this place!!

12/19/23- Dropped off 2 feral cats to be fixed. The lady taking them in sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes. We are trying to help with the feral cats breeding, we feed them and this is how we are treated. Extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. I'll take my donations to another shelter.

🥇Charleston Animal Society came to our rescue when our own County, Berkeley, was not able to do so!!Caught off guard, after a stray cat took up at our home a few years ago, we had no idea she was pregnant.Being excited over the new little fur balls, who became feral, they soon produced a mass of kittens!!Not being able to find the money to have them spayed or neutered at the time, we now have 20 cats and kittens!!!We called so many societies, spay and neuter clinics trying to find a discounted price where we could fulfill our responsibilities!!And the only Clinic, who was able to come to our rescue was, Charleston Animal Society Spay and Neuter Clinic, for Colony cats🐈 😻 🎉

Good people. Good place. It did take nearly 2 hours to get our lost / found cat from an enclosure and finally leave the building. Procedures, while valuable, sometimes take forever. This is a very nice facility where you will have a generally positive experience and maybe make a furry friend.
