I will not be buying animals from this shop ever again. They do not health check and sell animals "as is". Never should a breeder sell an animal "as is"... red flag. At first I had a great experience with this shop and thought it was a cute little place. However..... I have purchased many rats from them and- they all have died suddenly. I have been owning rats for 11 years and NEVER have I had rats die on me suddenly. What's worse, I had purchased a female dumbo after getting two other top ear girls from a breeder she got my other two females sick and then 2 died the other had to be put down. I had boys from gittlers as well and they died very suddenly just recently. I am experienced with rat care having them on high quality food and the proper care, lots of free roam time and appropriate sized cage.... this experience is unbelievable heartbreaking. Don't buy animals from here you're better off going else were.

Everyone was helpful and nice. Had a nice conversation at the checkout counter. It just smelled very "fishy", but it is an aquarium store. It could used a little clean-up and organization. Will be returning for more of our future aquarium needs.

These guys have everything you need and cheaper than the box stores. They even have a program for free bags of food. This is why I buy local.

This place has been around since I was little. Nice locally owned place. Unfortunately like every where prices are going up but for the location I’d recommend going here over a dollar general or other store. Shop local!!

This place is still the best! All of the negative reviews must be from competitors, because they're false. I was actually scared to go in because they say it has a bad smell. UNTRUE. Im going to cut this short, rather than point everything out. EVERYTHING they are saying is absolutely, 100% FALSE. Gittlers is still the place to go for knowledgeable owners, healthy pets, and all of the pet supplies you can imagine & then some. If you don't go here for your pets & their needs, you're missing out!

They are so kind and knowledgeable here! You can really see that they care about their animals and fish. Our hamsters are in absolute great health! My children have named them Gumdrop and Pickles.

Always so helpful. Stopped in to see about an algae eater for a small tank. After explaining the tanks condition, he concluded that I'm feeding them too much. He didn't try to sell me anything, just gave me the advice I needed. That is why I have been a life long customer.

I was waken by a lady who works here this morning she was beating on my door like the police. When my husband came to door she was very rude to him. Asking us rudely to move our vehicle for the tree service. Would she have spoke. To a white man like that or even me if I came door? Do not purchase their animals.I agree 100% with the other 1 star reviews. The place is gross, the animals are all miskept and neglected. We made the mistake of buying a cockatiel because it was $80 cheaper than petco, great, right?Nope, they lied about the birds being hand-fed (ours was terrified of our hands for months), our poor bird had 2 avian yeast infections that the vet said could have only come from the pet store (and that most of their other birds most likely have it) That costed us over $1000 to get corrected needing to drive 3 hours to an actual avian vet in Washington DC. I initially called the store to explain the symptoms and the lady that works with birds was very rude and just told me to call someone else and wasn't even interested in hearing what I had to say.I'm the first person to advocate for shopping at small businesses, but DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE YOUR BUSINESS.

I have been going to Gittler's since I was a little boy and been going there in my adult years. Best pet shop in Johnstown. Great selection of tropical fish freshwater and saltwater. Supplies they have it all. Knowledge and experience can't beat it.

Some stuff is over priced, the place is dirty and smells so bad anytime I walk in there I literally have to hold my breath and THEN walk in bc if you’re breathing in as you walk in WOW, and anyone who’s been in there knows what I’m talking about!!Also, the son used to be so down to Earth and happy going now he’s always drunk and stumbling around. (As the dad does also he’s got a friend up front mainly in the summer time drinking alcohol together hanging out during store hours.)I’ve seen dead fish stuck to the filters, floating on top the water, other fish eating at the dead ones. (Keep in mind I mentioned to them about the dead fish, THEN I went there 4 days in a row to see if it was handled and Nope) Some of the other animals in there They have housed together when they shouldn’t be! It really is a bummer that they’re the only pet store (besides Petco which is in Richland!)Shop/Enter at your own Risk!!! 🤞

Was just there, smell is obscenely bad. Prices are higher than petco if that tells you anything. Took $23 worth of stickered merchandise to the counter and the old man charged me over $30 when I enquired about the price he says to me that the one priced item was wrong and just peeled the sticker off of it. Will never spend another penny there. Apparently prices don't matter and they charge what they want for things. This is why people stop supporting local businesses. Petco just got a loyal customer.

I used to love going to this pet store but anymore it is so nasty in there and the people that work there both have attitudes all the time and seem like they hate their job? Also there is open beer in the fridge where they keep live worms...bc tim drinks all day there? Why did they have to get so nasty? It's a shame bc this place use to be something to look forward to...now I hate that they are the only option for live feeder food..bc I wouldn't take my money there otherwise...

Decided to stop by for the first time today thinking a local business might be better than petco to get snails for my aquarium. I was wrong. The place smelled awful first of all. All the tanks were completely dark, no lights on any of them. No decorations in the tanks either. It looked like most of the snails were dead. They were all lying on the bottom. There were empty broken shells from snails that had died and never been removed, I couldn’t even tell what some of them looked like since it was so dark. The tank next to it had a dead tadpole floating at the top. I immediately left after that, I didn’t even look around the rest of the shop. And honestly, based on a lot of other reviews, I’m glad I didn’t look at the other animals. If the other reviews are true, this place should be shut down. Disgusting.

I've purchased NUMEROUS animals and fish from Gittlers and they were/are super helpful. I even had a couple questions about guinea pigs and since they breed them there they had the answers i needed, and their suggestions worked perfectly! I've never had any issues there and the staff all pretty much know me when I walk in! Great place and I highly recommend it!!

Overall, not a bad store. Decent priced feeder mice/rats for my snakes.The attitude of the staff varies day to day. When asked if they are getting anymore snakes in, I was met with "We can't get anything new in until these snakes are gone. We have this albino ball python, but people around here are too cheap to buy it."I was taken back by this, seeing as how I didn't want to drop $399 for a ball python that I can get for half the price from a breeder.Besides that, it is an okay place. Don't let the on and off again attitude change your perspective of this store.I like the variety of fish, corn and rat snakes, and birds. Prices on equipment are to be expected from a mom and pop store, so no issue with that.I do recommend this place for people who want a bird, reptile, or fish.

What an amazing array of fish and animals. They have a great selection for being a family owned and operated store. I get my ball python's meals there all the time and they are so reasonably priced.

The place smelled terrible. As soon as the doors opened it took my breath away. All of the animals they had were surrounded by their own feces. The people who were working there acted like they didnt want to be there and gods forbid if you asked them a question. I felt bad for everything in that place. They also have a long history of selling animals that are illegal to own in this state.

I am a regular customer of Gittler's and have been for many years... I would not go anywhere else. You can't put a price on the dedication these two people have for their customers or knowledge they have for their products and the animals, out pets, they serve. I have gone in there with questions on everything from my training my crazy dog to the fish pond I inherited and am trying to keep alive. They have always given me their time, advice and expertise... way beyond the standard of "good customer service". Nor have they ever sold me a product I did not need. That is how they take care of their customers. As for the animals that they sell... I have seen the love and dedication given to every animal in their care. From the time it is brought to their store until the time it is matched with it's new home, the animals are cared for as it they are their own, You do not find this kind of day in- day out dedication in a chain type pet store. Thank you Gittlers for all that you do... for having the abundance of product and sharing the wisdom that you have gained through the years to help us be better pet owners.
