We had to make sure our other two animals were up to date with vaccinations to adopt, which I can understand... But after doing that and even though you're listed as the first interested in adoption, they will still give the animal you're interested in to someone else without any notice. Heartbreaking experience for little kids.. Not trustworthy or recommended!

I know that they do good work, as most animal rescues do. Where is outfit fails is in their fundraising efforts. While they raise a good amount of money the larger donations are not acknowledged in any form. This effects their bottom line. I give to many shelters and these are the only ones that don't make I'm effort to connect with contributors.

Although I did not rescue my dog from this particular animal shelter, I was able to obtain a voucher for him to be fixed. The staff was extremely friendly and I'm truly blessed to have found this location. If anybody's looking for a pad, go check them out. My dog Rumi is extremely happy!

I adopted my puppy, Cash about 2 months ago. The staff was friendly and helpful, the application process was simple and easily completed. Cash is happy, healthy and very smart. Couldn't be happier with how everything went.

This shelter has the most caring and dedicated staff that I have ever seen. They aren't just care givers, they truly love them all. When I was looking for a new family member they matched me with the perfect dog for our activity level. Petey is a crotchety old man and I love him, crazy attitude and all!

This is a great animal shelter. The staff and volunteers are great and I take my kids at least once a week to cuddle the cats and walk a dog. I love volunteering for them and I'm currently also fostering for them. Great place to adopt #adoptdontshop

I picked up a stray dog in my home town who was malnourished, full of flees, had a large amount of hair loss, and had open sores from the itching and scratching. Dessin Animal Shelter took him in and nursed him back to health, neutered him, and found him a loving home. During his stay, I would visit him weekly and spent a bit of time talking to the staff. I found that the staff was very knowledgeable about the animals' health, how to properly assess their temperament, how to judge if placement in a home will be a good fit, and even shared some good training tips and ideas for my dogs at home.Sure... there were a few times staff forgot to call me back. And there were a few frustrating moments when I didn't get the information I requested as soon as I asked for it. But before passing judgement, I'd like to remind everyone that the staff at Dessin is doing the best they can. There are so many animals in need of help and it is an uphill battle. Tiring and stressful.I can tell you for sure that my doggie friend Zorro left there happy and healthy and his new mommy called me to update that he is comfortable in his new doggie bed... All thanks to Dessin Animal Shelter!

Absolutely HORRIBLE, they find reasons to kill the animals they have there. They just posted 2 pictures of coyote puppies & was gonna have them killed to get them tested instead of being a good shelter & calling wildlife centers, they also are very discriminating, when it comes to certain people getting animals, they never keep track of everything, a man came in one day with his wife and tried adopting a dog and waited 3 weeks just to find out that the dog was JUST adopted & they told me man and wife that it was never put in the system or called any references, they never called them to let them know until they showed up just to find out the dog was adopted, I do not recommend this shelter to anyone or any animals. They should put the animals in other places and close this place down

GET YOUR CAT/KITTEN RETESTED FOR FELINE LEUKEMIA!! We adopted our Morris, a kitten, in September, 2020. Initially he was supposed to be a mouser, and became so much more. Dessin disclosed that Morris had an Upper Respiratory Infection previously, but according to them (and his paperwork) everything was in order and he was healthy. He was the perfect fit for our home and he was the only cat, the very short time we had him. His first check up with the vet, we found out he had ring worm, internal worms, and that Dessin hadn't done his worming schedule or antibiotics properly, so we restarted them. That should have been the first sign.Time went on and we fell in love with his quirky, sweet and loving personality. Spring into June we noticed that he was coughing more. We thought with the URI at a young age, he had asthma. Our vet agreed and inhalers were started. We now realize it was at this time, that he was napping longer. He then took a tumble and had a little cut in his nose, that wouldn't heal. Our vet said it wasn't an infection, though we thought it didn't look right. We went along, noting he was eating less, and was less like Morris.Less than 2 weeks after we saw our Vet, we came home to Morris listless, refusing to eat, his gums and nose almost white. We took him to the emergency vet the next morning, only to be told he had Feline Leukemia. A cat who lived in a home with only one cat- Morris. A cat who NEVER went outside- ever. He didn't want to. The vet told us that Shelters often have volunteers who don't properly understand how to perform these tests and after all- their job is to get the pets adopted- that's it. His blood tests showed that his Leukemia was so advanced, his bone marrow could no longer produce red blood cells. On July 11, 2021 we made the decision to humanely euthanize Morris. He was 15 months old. From what we gather- as advanced as his Leukemia was, he contracted it at Dessin. Save yourself and your family the pain that we have gone through and have your pet re checked, we trusted the paperwork we still have and never had him checked, until it was too late.

My poor wife went through three weeks of a process to be able to adopt a pet from here. On the day of adoption to only be told that the animal was adopted by someone else. They never called us to let us know. They did not even check our references for the first two weeks. We made an appointment for a specific animal to find out they had no record of our appointment. Of course the person who said it was their job would not take responsibility and actually refused to provide me with the name of a person in charge. My wife has been crying about it for hours. I do not find this process or the outcome acceptable in any way and I will do everything I can to let people know to stay far away from Dessin Animal Shelter.

Stopped there today to drop off dog food that we no longer have use for.....our one dog passed away and my other one is now on a special diet for her kidneys. We where very impressed on the facility.....animals and cages etc are all well kept and clean. The people working there are very pleasant......glad to see that our furry friends are so well cared for.....I’m sure donations are always needed....please give if you can to help them along with their care.

PLEASE ADOPT! Dessin has so many adorable and loving cats that need an actual home. We adopted our second cat a few months ago, and she's amazing. I would adopt from here again. This shelter needs the community's support. I have not had a rude interaction with any staff member thus far. They cannot adopt to just anyone, and having proof of veterinarian care and shot records is a MUST. I am not sure about their dog adoptions, but I have received calls as a reference, and as stated above, they will not adopt to just anyone if you catch my drift. Viral infections and the like are easily obtained and difficult to deal with, so your other pets having their shots is absolutely needed. We love visiting and I highly recommend socializing in the cat room with the adults!

We cannot express how wonderful the staff and volunteers at Dessin has been in helping us add a new member to our family. All of the women I spoke to during the process care so much about the animals in their care. They know their personalities and their quirks and do their best to ensure the animals being adopted are going to great homes. It's rare to see shelters so committed to finding great homes for their animals. This shelter is constantly networking, fundraising, bringing animals to so many local events and keeping them socialized and happy. They're also bringing awareness to spay and neuter practices, dog licensing and animal cruelty issues. Bravo Dessin! Keep up the great work!

I adopted a dog that cost me a lot of money to nurse back to health. She had aggression issues towards other animals. Ultimately, I returned her 3 months later. I couldn't control her. She was re-homed quickly. The staff took her back and gave me a credit for her adoption fee. I personally was not a fan of my initial experience. I do appreciate them taking the dog back so quickly. My living situation changed . I could no longer care for a 130pd dog going into a 4 room apt from a big house.

I am a photographer and am often up at the animal shelter snapping photos or just hanging out with the animals. I always see rue cats and dogs well provided for and treated with such kindness/love! The staff go above and beyond to care for each pet and do their best to find forever homes for all animals. I adopted my cat Spencer in November 2017 and I'm so thankful to Dessin for taking this guy in and helping me through the adoption process. I highly recommend this shelter!!!

Very negative experience!!! The girls on the phone and at welcome desk were quite friendly, but the others were downright nasty. I had an approved application - they already contacted my vet and personal references... I just needed to bring two requested documents, which I did and they were approved by the shelter.I drove 3 hrs r/t to meet a dog (brought my son's dog for meet & greet). The environment they provided was not adequate for a meet & greet and to successfully bond with the dog. I mentioned I'd like to come back and spend some more time with him. In a conversation, I mentioned I had a stray cat that visited my property, keep in mind I have a large piece of property, so to have a stray cat visit is not unusual. They refused to allow me to adopt since I would need to show vaccinations for the stray cat. HEARTBROKEN, I contacted my town's animal control officer... he looked at my 20 year history in town including my responsibility to register and vaccinate my pets. He offered to speak with Dessin Animal Shelter to explain that he would investigate the stray cat, locate the cat's owner (it's clear the cat has an owner since the cat appeared quite healthy, friendly and above avg weight). Well, the manager at Dessin had absolutely no interest in talking to a fellow animal control officer (one that has 30 years experience). His attempt to rectify the situation was ignored by Dessin. It's a shame that shelters like this exist... with poor personnel who are inexperience and miserable in their jobs. But please don't avoid them, these animals need out and away from them!!! Please adopt, but be prepared for their attitudes!!!On a side note, you can clearly tell the dog I was interested in had a major ear infection in both ears. When I inquired about it, I was told that he just doesn't like his ears touched. Trust me, being a savy Shepherd owner, ear infections are very common and I saw the pain in his face if he was pet near the ears. On a side note, when I inquired about another dog there, I was told that "you don't want to adopt him, he mounts you and then hard to get him off". That is very irresponsible on their part. The girl mentioned that he only mounts them when they try to put him back in his cage, well uhm... he doesn't like to go back in his cage!!! Are they that inexperienced? A little dog training could easily solve this issue, don't tell people that he's unadoptable!!!

Happily took some strays that decided to make home in my garage. Reasonable fee, which I happily overpaid. Wonderful small place that I would recommend to be given donations. Shouldn't be overlooked to bigger more popular shelters. They do a fantastic job.

I drove 3 HR to look at a Persian cat . They had ALOT of them . I did the application online . I emailed them asking was there anything more you need because I would hate to drive 3 HR and not come home with a cat which they never emailed me back . My boyfriend even called them to and they told him cat are good with other cats not sure about dogs . So I had my hopes high . Well then we got there and the lady told me that my indoor cats need to see my vet to have updated shots because they need there distemper and rabies which they had the distemper but rabies there indoor cats. Also they needed proof of updated shot record for the dog . They never asked anything about this to my boyfriend and it was never mention on there application about needed proof of shot record or cats needed to see a vet before bring in another animal into your home . What my question is that they are so worry that the Persian cats haven upper respiratory infection giving it to my cats but there around other cats that do not have it and there cage is next to a window where the cold air is coming in . That's is really good for any one with upper respiratory infection. Also wouldn't you isolate a sick animal from the other ones . Another thing on pet finder this shelter should updated everything about theses animals. I didn't know these Persian cats had upper respiratory infection until I drove 3 HR to find out . I should of read the rating more . I feel sorry for those cats .

Yesterday my friend’s dog was took in by this shelter after she was hit by a car. They only found out that she was there after the shelter was closed though and there was no way to contact them. A little while later my friend’s mom reached out to the shelter’s facebook page as kind of a last resort, and they replied. They said that the dog wasn’t badly injured and that they had consulted with a vet. But just now the shelter told them that wasn’t the case, and that the dog’s back is shattered. And she’s been suffering all night because there was no way to contact the shelter and no way to pick her up. She’s most likely going to be put down now.

Terrible place. Full of cats, dogs, kittens no room for more. We found a dog or I should say he found us, and it was an immediate match. But after filling out an application, we returned the next day to drop some food donations and take him for a walk to get more acquainted with him, when a worker told us our application indicated we were not a match and was rejected . As she was telling us this the dog stared at us hoping we were taking him home the whole time. We left very disappointed in this facility and could never recommend them to anyone dropping off or picking up a dog or cat. While we were there, I saw so many beautiful animals and we kept asking why are they still here? Now we know.

People were friendly and we liked how you were allowed to interact with the cats. Some places like this can be so weird about that, so we were glad that they were cool with it. 👍

We started looking into rescuing a dog about 2 months ago. The first shelter we went to, we found a senior dog we fell in love with.. after submitting the application we got approved. Not long after we were told they found lumps on the dog and they had to do tests, ect. Weeks went by and we didn’t hear, we would keep callIng to check back in to follow up and they wouldn’t even know which dog we were talking about when we called. More time went by and we eventually had to move on :( not long after we went to Dessin. We saw a dog being walked as soon as we pulled in and we knew that was the dog we wanted. We asked about him to one of the workers , she told us he was a stray and only there about a week or so and she knew everything about him. What commands he knew, how he was with being walked. It was a huge difference from Dessin vs. the other shelter. You could tell how much Dessin truly cared about the animals there. They even each had their own toy in their cages with them. Everything was clean. The very next day we were able to bring our dog in for a meet and greet to see how the 2 dogs got along and we were able to bring him home. It’s been a little over a month now and we love our addition. We even got a card in the mail from Dessin this week thanking us for the adoption and wishing us well. I would 100% recommend this place to anyone looking to rescue an animal, they were great.

Absolutely terrible service, would not recommend. I have just left there. I was there with my boyfriend (he’s colored, although it shouldn’t matter) and was treated extremely rude since the minute we set foot in the door. I would hope she was rude to us because of our age rather then the color of his skin but we will never know. Don’t ask to us to give donations and adopt animals when you’re going to treat customers like this because at the end you’re just hurting the animals more.
