Great area if you like small cities. We do. The people we met were very nice. We went to a small Baptist church for Sunday service and were welcomed in. It was a great service. The owner of the hotel is very nice. His dog Rosie was great. She would greet us each day.Rooms: The room was not very clean. It really needed a good vacuum and dusting.Bathroom was clean and the bed sheets were clean. No room service. Coffee was served in a room downstairs. The restaurant is closed.

I just love staying at this unique, clean, quiet hotel! I visited for the first time 27-30 June and loved it so much I returned again last week, 18-21 July! Both times to play golf at Buffalo Peak and La Grande Country Club. Thus, I felt it only fitting to reside in the 19th Hole themed room. This place isn't your run-of-the-mill hotel. It not only has unique character because of its history and it's claw-foot tubs, beautiful carpets, tile and wood floors, and woodwork, but you're treated like family by its very kind owner Charlie and his sweet dog Rosie III. So much so, that I find it hard to leave! And the place is so peaceful being that it's located in a very safe small town with very little traffic...I thus sleep really well on their comfy beds. Hopefully, when the economy and labor market improves, Charlie can one day reopen the restaurant, but for now some good restaurants and stores are within easy walking distance.Definitely one of my favorite places to stay in all my frequent travels playing golf! Inexpensive too!

We like to stay at historic hotels especially small ones off the beaten path. The Union hotel has been on our list for a while. This place comes across to me as a once grand hotel that was renovated years ago and then allowed to decline. There appears to be another round of renovations going on now, but judging by the age of some of the debris piles around the property, it is going very slowly or possibly not progressing at all. Our room was renovated but the work was thoughtless and shoddy by my standards.Anyone who has any stability issues walking or balancing should avoid this place. No elevators. Tripping hazards, walkways obstructed, poorly installed fixtures that would easily come loose if you grabbed one for balance, and much of the first floor, as far as I could see is a cluttered hoard of knick knacks. The beautiful game room touted on the website has been closed off as the owner 's personal living room and office with Fox news playing on a gigantic TV all day.The parking in back is not really available to guests in favor of the owners cars and trailers plus most of it is used for an overgrown RV park and piles of junk and appliances from the hotel. So you'll need to park on the main road through town in front of the hotel. Which doesn't always feel safe due to rampant speeding and careless driving in town, but worked out ok for us.On the upside, it's a very cool historic building, the owner is friendly and dogs are welcome.Directly across the street is a Sinclair dino mart which is the hub of activity in town. The main entertainment seems to be for locals to burn rubber out of there in their huge trucks. If you want any sleep, bring ear plugs.

It is quaint (thus the 2 stars). Be prepared for no elevators, or help with luggage up several stairs no matter your age or how many children you have. Window air conditioners have a difficult time keeping up with the unusual heat. Cleaning appeared to be-our 2 small trash baskets were emptied maybe once in 4 days, and a couple of towels replaced. We never saw a cleaning staff, but we also didn't spend much time there during the days. One person, Charlie, seems to be running the place. Our kids (with 2 babies who played in the pack n play) kept their room very clean as we were there to see. Their credit card was charged an extra $100., Charlie claiming the room had dirty diapers and poop on the floor. UNTRUE as they are NOT disrespectful and we helped them, witnessing NO mess except overflowing small trash cans. Just beware and best to take pictures of your room upon checking out.

Very unique experience. Quite impressive that the proprietors maintain this historic site. It really is taking a step back into 1920s eastern Oregon. This is not a place I would stay with younger children due to the vintage decor etc. Were I passing through on a trip with some friends, however, this would be a fun overnight stop. The Garden Room was very clean, and the AC worked well.

My wife and daughters loved this hotel. The design of our room in a rustic western style and the items downstairs drew them it. It was fun to read the description of each room outside of the rooms and the owner was very friendly and welcoming.

I stayed at the hotel before. Enjoyed the stay, but this review is about their RV park.I rented it because the photos on the website shows nice clean spaces and it's close to where my son lives.I was very disappointed when I arrived and found the sites we're rundown, not maintained at all. There are only 7 sites. Three Have old cars or parts in them, one has a permanent person living there, which is fine.Grass and gravel not maintained. Nothing like the photo as shown on website. Wish I could post the photo.Won't stay again🤨☹️Love the little town, and the hotel itself and the place down the street makes the best pizza. AlsoBreakfast at the cafe across the street is well worth it! The bisquits and gravy are great!

Since I live in Union I have never stayed in the hotel, but I have been around it all my life. They have many themed rooms and a very vintage feel to the entire hotel. As for the bad management there are new owners with new managers as of a couple of months ago and I hear that they are great people. Also over Halloween they have an awesome haunted house throughout the entire hotel. I have overheard people from out of the area saying that it was the best one they have ever been to! Hope you visit our little town!

Beautiful hotel full of history. Everywhere you look is awesome, without being overwhelming. Charlie, the owner and operator is genuinely nice, and cares about the guests. This is a place that my family amd I will stay again. We stayed in the Signature room. It was the most comfortable place we stayed on our 9 day trip. The coffe in the morning is pleasant, and the entire grounds are interesting and there is plenty to explore just within thw hotel itself. Please keep this piece of Oregon History around for generatiins to come.

We made a reservation to stay 3 nights to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Our arrival date was to be Friday - Monday (September 3-6). I contacted them as soon as 2 of our granddaughters tested positive for covid (Thursday 2am). By the way the owner hung up on me - he said I woke him up. I had no idea they didn’t have a 24 hour desk. The reason it was an issue is because our granddaughters had been staying in our home while their parents were out of town. On September 4, Saturday morning Both of of us tested positive. The hotel is charging our credit card for the room. I agree it’s not their fault but neither is it ours. Covid isn’t picky on who it chooses to make sick. We both had our shots last Spring. I wouldn’t stay at this hotel just because of the rudeness and lack of compassion. So disappointed. Not only do we have covid but being treated terribly. Do not bless them with your presence.

We recently attended a birthday party at this fantastic Hotel. The owner Charlie was absolutly a dream. His personal touch and food was out of this world! I cannot say enough about the entire event. Sandra (staff) is like a beautiful butterfly and sweet as can be. What a great night! This is what life is about, connecting! Thankyou Charlie

I never spent the night in this historic hotel, but I first remember going inside when it was being renovated back in 1996, and when my church put on a wedding reception. I also ate at it's restaurant it once had (a small one) for my 21st 🎂, but the historic building itself is a photographers 📸 feast besides spending the night.

We, 8 cyclists from Vancouver BC, had a fantastic stay at the Union Hotel for the start and end of a week long cycling trip around the Wallowas. The proprietor and staff were amazingly helpful, allowing us to store our bikes in the basement and coordinating for an early breakfast time. On our final night of the trip we had dinner in the hotel dining room which was fabulous, and with a touch of glam! This is such a warm and friendly place!

We stayed in "The Signature" room and it had a bedroom, private bathroom with a huge clawfoot tub, and a sitting room. Even though the weather was hot, our room was cool and quiet. We had a peaceful weekend checking out the town, which has a fun museum with very detailed displays, as well as a park right behind the hotel. We also had a great dinner of lamb chops and shrimp scampi in the lovely restaurant. The owner was also our server for dinner, and she was friendly. I'd recommend this hotel to people who like being in older buildings. I'd descibe the setting as similar to a museum or antique store.

The cuisine is absolutely delectable. I would drive quite a distance to eat in this establishment. The room we had was quite cute. I would advise to get a room on the back side of the hotel, as the street noise ( from kids) was loud into the night hours. Also, something I did not consider, is there are not electrical outlets in the bathrooms. At least not in our room. I would stay again though!

A wonderful historic hotel, built in 1921 and decorated with a great assortment of antiques and art. We stayed in the Annie Oakley Room, where the actress who played her in the old TV series stayed - lots of fun and informative pictures on the walls. Ruth, the proprietor, was exceptionally kind, and even let us special-order breakfast. We were on a long road trip from Canada to Wyoming, and Union OR made a lovely rest stop in the middle, just off the highway. Would definitely recommend it!

I understand it's under new ownership this year -- headed there for a few days in January. Just wanted to say that we loved the place; have stayed twice; gorgeous rooms and building. We had no problems with the prior owners. Glad it is back in business. Also, although it is definitely hard to find good meals in Union there is basic fare available (not too late) and there is a cute museum (when it's open).

This place is the best! Th 19th Hole room was spacious and accommodating for the time we stayed. This quaint hotel brings you to a very nostalgic feeling with the antiquity of the decor.I truly felt welcomed as I came in to make my reservation and even as we departed. An experience I would hope everyone traveling through this direction gets!P.S. check out LJ Brewskis. Amazing food!

Ruth, Rosie, and Charlie run a tight ship, and still manage to crack me up and make me feel at home in this BEAUTIFUL place. I have stayed on the RV side, and am now an extended hotel-client (for school) and the rooms are immaculately kept, and lovely. I highly recommend a stay here! The perfect place to explore Uhion county from!

Have been going to Union for 20+ years. Hotel is nice and quiet. During all that's going on in our nation. Just to get away from t.v. and newspapers for a couple days is worth the trip. And the plus side also wad the little restaurant across the street "Gravy Dave's" is like a treasure right in the middle of town.

Awesome. Well worth getting off the beaten interstate path for. We stepped back in time. Kids loved it even though there was no tv in the room, we passed the time reading about the history of the hotel and checking out all the old fixtures and craftsmanship. Look for the tile work errors in the amazing lobby, sort of real life "Where's Waldo". Resturant is great...the locals frequent which says a lot. We will stay again and choose a different room for each visit.

This hotel is super unique and pretty neat, especially for anybody who likes BNBs, history and a simple stay. For somebody wanting cable TV and a pool, you'd be better off going to a chain. The owners of the hotel are very friendly guys and there are some cats milling about the first floor. The rooms are clean and have charm.

This is a great hotel, almost a hundred years old, with just nine rooms. Each is individually furnished with antiques which also means no TV and no fridge in the room. Breakfast is only served on Sundays and you should definitely try it, should you get a chance.

Loved our stay. Was our Economic Stimulus vacation. Frequented this lovely hotel which is doing its best to bring back the glory of its past. Considering the scope and scale of it, the owners have done an amazing job to make it welcoming. Amazing food, too. And I live in Portland, so-called bastion of all things good and edible this side of the Cascades. Angie's (sp?) next door is perfect for coffee and browsing. Anthony Lakes skiing is not to be missed. Buff Peaks Golf is also like a course out of Scotland. Great way to spend a Staycation...

I have had such a wonderful time at the Historic Union Hotel. Every single visit has been such a pleasant and positive experience. My credit goes to the owner, Charles Morden. He is kind and funny and makes everyone feel like family. You will not find that kind of service nearly anywhere else. I wish more businesses were like this hotel. If you get the opportunity to stay there, you will really enjoy it. Not to mention the unique decorating and antiques!
