We stopped here on our drive from Seattle to the Goldendale observatory. From the online photos, it reminded us of our favorite local drive-in. We were wrong. It was way better! This is our new favorite burger joint (unfortunately, a 4 hour drive from home)!I had the Jim Dandy with fries and a peanut butter cup milkshake. My husband had a double deluxe bacon cheeseburger. His comment was on how good it was because it had REAL cheese! He also had fries and a cookies and cream milkshake. We both loved that they used real ice cream! Highly recommend.

Wow, a real gem of a drive in, Big Jim's serves up some fantastic burgers for hungry travelers. On all of my road trips I try to stop at the places that aren't franchises, since the food is almost always better in places like this, and Big Jim's is at the top of my list. A little pricey, but well worth the extra money for food that actually makes you feel good.Oh, and their real hard ice cream shakes are wonderful.Vegetarian options: I didn't try any, but they have veggie burger options on the menu, and some really good cod burgers for people just avoiding meat.Kid-friendliness: It's a burger place with loads of ice cream options. Yes, it's kid-friendly.

This place was quite busy when we stopped in and I can see why. The food and service were both really good.My wife had the Bacon, mushroom and Swiss burger. I had the Rodeo burger. Both were juicy, straight off the grill and a good size. We'll definitely be returning the next time we're in town.

First time I went to Big Jim's I had a burger the size of a toilet seat! Everything about it was good. The bacon was especially standout. Thick slices cooked to a perfect crispness without loosing the slightly chewy tooth. The mushroom Swiss burger is also excellent. Fried cod sandwich is big and crispy but the coleslaw was a little drippy. Still definitely recommend it. Fries are crisp and hot. Onion rings are also delicious. Have been back a couple times now and while I don't get the giant burger (it's just too much for anyone not named Kobayashi) I am always impressed with the food and the service.

Always always always worth this stop in the Dalles. It's right off the highway and so delicious you'll make the detour. Fresh burgers "made with love" and the best waffle cut sweet potato fries! The milkshakes are made with Tillamook ice cream, and there are lots of flavors to choose from. We had a hot fudge sundae milkshake this stop. If you were looking for a good burger and fries, male this your stop on the way to where you are going!

Good burgers and fries. Milkshakes were good too and they have lots of yummy flavors. Not a lot of parking but we got lucky. Although it was lunch hour the service was pretty fast. Definitely would stop again!Wheelchair accessibility: No ideal but possible

Very disappointed. We ordered several sea food items, but instead of packing each order in a container of its own they dumped them together in one container. Trying to separate the food was a nightmare and did not have the accurate order. When I called I spoke with 2 Managers. I was told any chicken or fish orders are packaged together in one container. So if three of us order fish items they get thrown together and you have to try to separate everything from the frys also thrown in there. We love the food from there but today was horrible

Stopped by this restaurant for dessert and fries. The fries came out very crispy and the flavor was great. Love that you can also order fry sauce here. Ordered a one scoop old fashioned cone - chocolate chip mint with a waffle cone. They have Umpqua ice cream which is a brand that I really enjoy. The cone was chewy which wasn't my favorite. I would order ice cream here again but probably in a cup. Also ordered a banana split sundae and this was great. I recommend this restaurant and will return.

The cashier was polite but the food was nasty and overpriced! As I am writing this my stomach hurts. The coleslaw smelled rancid, the sweet potato fries were hard, the burger and bacon was undercooked, and the toffee shake tastes like freezer burn. Everything thrown in the trash except the shrimp..but now my stomach is bubblin'! The total price was $40 and a waste of money.

Way over priced for the kind of food we got. We use to go there years ago and it's not the same. Burgers dry, very little meat for the price paid and over cooked. As were the tater tots. The coleslaw, again, over priced for what equaled about three bites. Sorry for this low report but it was just bad food. Not to mention that any sauce was an additional 40 cents. For example those tater tots were $4.50. Now add a sauce and I asked for three and now at another $1.20. Dry and bland taters. Teenage boys did not finish their food.Many years ago the quality was excellent. Not so much now.

I couldn't resist trying their Red, White, and Blue Burger, and it exceeded all expectations. The flavors blended together perfectly, and the burger was cooked to perfection.The curly fries were crispy and seasoned just right, making them the ideal side dish.And let's talk about their chocolate peanut butter espresso milkshake – it was nothing short of a dream! Rich, creamy, and packed with flavor, it was the perfect sweet treat to complement my meal.The staff at Big Jim's were friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. The atmosphere was comfortable, making it an excellent spot for a meal out.I highly recommend Big Jim's for their delicious food, great service, and welcoming ambiance. Classic American diner with great burgers you can customize. They have a bigger than normal side selection. I liked the fries as they had crispy coating. Just a wide menu.And they do ice cream both scooped and soft serve. It was great.

This location was kind of a hidden Mom-n-Pop place for burgers and fries. En route to the Oregon Coast it was a good quick stop to catch a quick bite.ProsThe front staff/cashier (not sure if it was the owner) was polite and helpful. I appreciated his demeanor and willingness to help.ConsI don’t have anything at the moment, but give me a couple weeks to think through and I’ll update this post.I didn’t take as many photos for this location as my kids were hungry and started eating before I could take the photo. 😅OverallIt was a good quick stop to catch a bite. There’s indoor and outdoor eating with a family dining style.

Very good size burgers and if you up your order to Tots...God help ya..you'll get Mt St Tater Tots delivered to your table..lol...it's that dang many of em!. Employees were very attentive, professional and extremely friendly. Glad I stopped in on my way across the country. If ever I return to the Dalles, I'll come back by.

Pretty good burger. We got take-out and it stayed hot and fresh. Ranch is really dilly and yummy, so is the fry sauce. The burgers are BIG and the meat is "smashed" like it should be.Two big complaints... 1) there are no pickles on the burger. What the heck???? I have never had to ask for pickles in my life so this was a really big disappointment upon driving away to eat outside in the park on a nice day. 2) they only offer cheddar and Swiss cheese. Everyone knows that American is superior to every other cheese on a burger because of its melting capacity. The cheddar was sliced so thin to be able to melt that you couldn't even taste it. I wish it was an option to get American.I'd go back but I'd try something else.

Grilled chicken is moist, burgers are good and the size and flavors are great! Tater tots to die for and fantastic staff. The wait time is minimal, they do get very busy at times but, even then its minimal wait.The menu is an easy to read, full description and they even have gluten free options. Ice cream and shakes are an option as well.

We had the pleasure of eating at this drive in this past Sunday. They were absolutely great!Manager Payton was extremely accommodating for our entire family. We had one member that was high risk but they made sure we didn’t have to worry about a thing when we got there. They put us all together on one side of the indoor dining area. The Staff: Haley, Brianna, Evelynn, Steven, "the burger expert" and the entire team were beyond attentive and amazing! Thank you to ALL of you for making our little mini road trip we were able to have all together as a family, a memorable one!The Beaverton Family

5 stars for food, 4 overall. Great burgers, good shakes, good service. Place tends to be busy which is a good sign. Burgers range from $8 to $20, chips n drink extra. I had a bacon cheeseburger called the Jim Dandy which I think was $9 and was very good. Onion rings are fully legit and almost perfect (burgerville just marginally out does them) Place is in a convenient location just on the outskirts of town. Parking is small but lots of street park. Inside is uninspiring like an old Wendy’s and not the cleanest, but also not the dirtiest. Will stop by again when in town. Worth doing!
