My favorite plant shop in Portland! Focused on Willamette Valley natives and edibles with a great selection of seeds, tools, houseplants and gifts too! Always love the unusual plant gems and support of local growers and super awesome staff!

I love this place! It is the go to spot in Portland for native plants, unique locally craftes gifts, indoor plants and all your gardening needs. The staff is so helpful and knowledgeable, sometimes I just go to talk about the garden and get ideas. I learn something new every time I go!

I have been there twice and staff have been unfriendly to my partner and I both times. During our last visit, there was only one other person in the store with two employee's. The employee's only said a couple words to me and wouldn't speak to my partner (who is a man of color...).I will not be going back due to this poor treatment. Bummed and hurt because the plants and prices look rad.

This is probably my favorite garden shop in Portland. They have a pretty great variety, but my favorite part is the many native plants they offer. Additionally, every member of the staff that I have spoken with is extremely knowledgable and has always been very helpful….and patient even when I think my questions might be kind of dumb haha. Love this place.

This shop was recommended to me by another nursery when I couldn't find some natives I was seeking. The selection is small but you will find things that aren't available everywhere. Their focus is on plants that are native to our climate. I am trying to replace a bunch of existing stuff that hasn't been doing so well with our crazy new weather with things that can handle it better. I really appreciate their commitment to inclusion and love supporting small and local businesses.

Huge variety of products. Basically everything you could need for gardening and livestock they have. I love that they carry plants native to the area. They also have fun local made items like candles and honey! Such kind and helpful people that work there! So inclusive, inviting, and diverse.

I frequently browse garden shops for things that I “need” and jeez I walked out with a handful of goods! Such a good selection of native plants (and seeds), good quality hand tools, reference books, and other odds and ends. Great social media presence too—give them a follow for sure on Insta!

This was my first visit, so I mostly just stopped by to cruise the aisles for future reference. I loved all the great natural gardening resources. The place also has a big community vibe! I look forward to shopping there later in the season.

We recently went into the SymbiOp Garden Shop and were impressed with every bit of our experience. As a proud plant mom, I’ve purchased many of my plants from well known nurseries around Portland. Many of the shops here are over priced and have sales associates that lack passion and advanced plant knowledge. SymbiOp was the total opposite. When shopping for plants here, I felt very well taken care of. Not only were the prices affordable (more affordable than other Portland shops), I thought the quality of the plants were well maintained and there was a good variety of species and locally crafted products. What I loved most about my experience was instantly feeling like I was walking into a community. It has a beautiful sense of culture and inclusivity. Every associate, including the owner Matt, expressed a deep knowledge of the plants and they were helpful in providing tips and suggestions. We bought four plants about a month ago and they’re just as beautiful as the day we brought them home.

By far the best selection of native plants in Portland! I've been to at least 4 or 5 other nurseries and SymbiOp is #1 for natives. They also have their own peat-free soil that is very affordable, and I honestly didn't know that peat was a problem until I learned it here. I was pleased by how much handmade art and household items by local Native American artisans that they sold. In addition, because of their upfront support of the LGBTQ community and the fact that they're worker-owned, I felt like this is a store _for_ people like me.

Love this place! If you like gardening, native plants, permaculture, locally made goods - than you will love exploring this gem of a shop. So many amazing native plants with really helpful explanations and tips, well organized. I learned so much just by walking around and looking at everything. They also had an amazing selection of gardening tools that seemed really high quality, and sweet gifts, books, and art for all ages. The staff were very helpful and sweet. And I especially loved that they were all masked and request customers mask as well - this made it feel actually safe to bring in my baby who is too young to wear a mask herself. Thank you!!

This is my new favorite garden shop! They have an amazing selection of natives, edible and houseplants for the best prices I’ve seen. You can expect to find pretty much everything you need for your garden. The staff is nice and helpful. They also have a zero waste model for selling stuff like shampoo, clothes detergent, etc. You can also find a lot of cool handmade crafts made by small local Portland businesses like artisan soap and colorful planters. I highly recommend!

Just took a wildflower ball/bomb making class here that was informative, engaging, and delightful. I swing by SymbiOp at least once a month to pick up indoor plant buddies or to augment the outdoor environment around my home. They focus on regional flora and offer guides to help with plant selection and placement that create mini ecosystems to benefit local fauna (us two legged animals included). The staff is always extremely helpful, and passionate about cultivating an inclusive, restorative approach to gardening and community. They currently also have a Winter Market full of locally produced, thoughtful gifts.

Superb garden shop, wonderful experience! They meticulously curate their selection and promote high quality products, from local suppliers, that are environmentally and socially responsible. Loved their huge selection of native plants and organic fertilizer options. Staff members were prompt to answer our questions and help us out. We are excited to have this place so close to our home!

The *only* problem with SymbiOp is that I always leave with more art than I needed... otherwise, an amazing, welcoming, and friendly place.Constantly impressed with their dedication to native plants and really love how tags suggest that less familiar plants can be used in place of daffodils, for example. They often have the same species in multiple ages, so you can kind of pick your budget too -- super handy when you're prone to impulse purchases....how did I get all these salmonberry bushes...Speaking of the art, their collection of goods from local artists (dat soap tho) and book library keep getting better. It sure does feel like they're part of the community!

Such a great space. Besides having any native, medicinal and edible plant you could want, the staff was so helpful. I came in with my 4-year-old and my 1.5-year-old twins in a wagon and they let me start a "plant pile" at the register so I didn't have to struggle carrying them or have my kids tear them apart in the wagon. One employee then helped me out to my car. We will definitely be back to get more plants and support such an awesome buisness!

I really enjoy shopping at SymbiOp to discover more alternative products l have not seen offered by other retailers. It was great to find a line of food products from an Arizona Pima tribal member and her family on my last visit. Ramona Farms is reviving the agriculture of native desert foods once grown by her people. The shop and online educational articles for backyard growers to regional environmental policies are very refreshing. Good job being done by the hardworking worker-owners.Willow Elliott

Great selection of native plants and gardening supplies. They even have a really cute gift area where we bought some beautiful cards. Will definitely be coming back here often!

This shop looks appealing but the charm only lasts so long. It's vital to inspect/quarantine any houseplants you buy from here (or just don't buy them at all). A few weeks after purchasing a monstera from this garden store I found it was badly infested with thrips. This was my first experience with a houseplant pest of this magnitude so by the time I realized what was happening they spread to other beloved plants and several, including the monstera itself, have had to be thrown out. I had to throw out another tonight, which prompted me to write this review. I've been a plant person for over a decade and this has been my single worst experience buying a plant - very disappointed and will not be encouraging anyone to shop here. The prices are also quite high in general.

Unlike other nurseries, Symbiop does not mark POISONOUS plants and berry plants as being POISONOUS. This can be very dangerous is you have small children or pets. Many of the plants they sell are rare and unique and ALSO POISONOUS.
