Deschutes Angler is a truly outstanding fly shop. Gabor (my Hungarian brotha!) is a very nice man who sold me a bunch of flies to catch my first Deschutes redside and also provided me some very sound advice as far as best places to fish/camp. I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner Amy who has had an interesting life to say the least -- just a joy to talk to about her travels and life experience that led her to Maupin.My girlfriend and I are camping/fishing out of our car in Central Oregon for two months and thus have been to pretty much all the local fly shops but I'd have to say Deschutes Angler is my favourite simply because of the attitude and warmth of the staff. I loathe using the word, but I must say that they just have a very nice... vibe. Friendly and welcoming. They didn't treat me like an out-of-state idiot, even though I very much am one!Thanks guys!

A great one stop-shop! They have all th information, flies and gear you’ll need for you fishing trip to the Deschutes. Very friendly and pricing is very fair.They saved my trip by carrying a “wader patch kit and fast drying UV glue” and hundreds of dollars. Patch kit worked perfectly and my waders were nearly new again; more importantly waterproof. Thank you staff/owners for saving my trip and knowing exactly all fisherman’s needs. You saved my trip!

This is a great shop with extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff. They have always been super helpful with choosing the correct flies, repairing equipment, and directing me in the right way with new gear.I recently went on a trip with one of their guides Evan. Literally this was one of the best fishing experiences I have had in my life. I quickly lost count of how many fish we landed. He kept me on large trout all day, taught me knew techniques, and provided excellent feedback throughout the trip. I recommend their guiding service to anyone coming to the area.

Best Customer Service Ever! It was actually back in the Fall of 2016. I had just purchased a G. Loomis 6wt switch rod from a friend. I wanted to get a reel for it after a long day on the water. My wife and I rushed up to Deschutes Angler, and we got there right at closing.The Hazels invited us in. I picked a new Bauer for my rod and needed a line for it. John asked if I had the rod with me to make sure the rod, reel and line all matched weight-wise. I did not have it in the truck outside. It was doen in our trailer at the river. John said, "go ahead and get it. We'll wait for you." Mind you, it was now well after closing.We drove down, got the rod and brought it back. John put it together with the reel. John weighed to lines on a scale for their actual (not box-printed) weights. He chose one that he thought would match the rod most effectively!Years later, this experience still stands out as likely the best retail experience I've had anywhere. And yes, the line and rod cast perfectly! Thank you! (Pic is of the first fish I caught with it at disk on the lower Deschutes!)

He had great recommendations for flies, his advice for how to fish and break down the river was spot on, and he's funny to top it off! Very nice! Fully stocked fly shop. Excellent service and advice. Caught 3 trout in a couple of hours in the dead heat of an August day. Tried a few different flies but all 3 fish were caught on the fly Amy recommended. Thanks Amy!

I was recommended a fly and was given 3 free samples. The first one I tried bent in the lower jaw of the first trout I caught. It was only 20” I think it should of lasted more than one fish. True story. Awesome fly shop use what they give you 😉

Colin and Ben provided the absolute best customer service I’ve ever experienced. Myself and two friends did a float on the river and we are all relatively new to fly fishing. Colin and Ben helped me get my rod set up, provided excellent recommendations on flys to use and where to fish. It is 2 hours from my home and I will likely drive there for further fly fishing kit. Spent almost 2 hours in the store and felt like I was working with friends. Amazing, thank you Colin and Ben for making it an amazing experience and awesome trip.

Wow! What an awesome local business! My fishing experience is pretty limited (and by limited I mean I have been once). I wanted to buy some flies for my uncle's birthday but had absolutely no idea what to purchase. I gave the fly shop the location and time frame that my uncle planned to fish and Ben hooked it up with his favorites! The flies were then shipped to me in a timely manner. Derrick (sp?) and Amy are a fantastic team at this shop. They really help me decide when to drive the 2 hours for my 1/2 day bombing raids on The Deschutes to grab some quality time. Derrick set me up with a fantastic Echo Eurpoean nymphing rod yesterday and both he and Amy were so incredibly helpful with advice on how to learn this nymphing technique . I really can’t thank them enough.

If you're heading out to fish the Lower Deschutes near Maupin, you have to make a stop at Deschutes Angler! I have had nothing but amazing experiences with the staff here. Amy and the rest of the team are so welcoming to all experiences of Anglers, and give great suggestions to help you be successful out on the river. I've utilized their guide services, ordered online through their website, and made many stops at the shop to pick up flies before heading out for a day of fishing and their services are second to none. Thanks to these wonderful people, I have caught many gorgeous redband trout on one of the most beautiful rivers you'll fish anywhere!

This is a top quality fly shop in Oregon, you have question about fly fishing or when it comes to Spay Rod fishing, this is the place to come for your answers. They have top quality expert guides, staff members are number one in my opinion. I especially enjoy talking to Amy, she is so knowledgeable in about everything, when it comes to Spay Rods knowledge, hands down the person to talk to. You think she has been doing it for over a half century, but upon meeting her you will realize she's not even close to that age bracket. This is my go to shop when I fish the Deschutes River, or Northern Oregon.

I’m pretty new to the sport 1 year in and I was having trouble getting anything to bite only surfacing trout and nudging. I talked to Bruce about what flies I was using and he suggested a handful of flies and advice on what time to fish and I ended up catching around 13 trout in the span of 2 hours with the fly he suggested along with some huge ones hooked but set to soon due to excitement . This shop has been my bread and butter since I began fly fishing. As a complete rookie, they were extremely helpful and helped me understand the important things to start with. When I started to develop a little proficiency, they helped me get beyond that and continued to give me ideas, tips, and tricks that worked. Their counsel on gear has been solid from the get-go. Now that I'm developing, they are a great resource to help me further my skills, gear and abilities. I've been in a lot of shops nationwide, and their selection is awesome.Due to how famous their river is, and due to their proximity to some very affluent areas, they deal with the ultimate quantity of ignorant, entitled folks who think they should get their way, no matter what. They do so very well, although you can't keep everyone happy.The guides and owners of this shop are dialed-in. If you can get over yourself for a minute and actually listen, you'll come away a better fisherperson than when you went in, and you'll likely have more fish on the river they know so well! They might be sold out of your shirt size, but you won't be worrying about that when your drag is singin'!

My dad and I booked a fly fishing trip with one of the guides and enjoyed the trip. Although we only caught 1 fish each, the views were spectacular. The shop is staffed with knowlagable people and the guides know the river very well.

Helpful staff providing very honest advice. I was blown away by the selection and scale of the shop considering its small town location. The euro nymph patterns we picked up were getting eats all day. Will be back next time we visit Maupin.

I'm amazed this shop is still open for business.I've been in there three times and each time the person acted as if I was bothering them in a huge way.The last time was the icing on the cake.I had forgotten my fishing shirt, and while I could have worn my vest over my t-shirt, I prefer to use the over-sized pockets of a fishing shirt during the hot summer months.As I made my way back to the very small supply of Simms shirts, (the only brand they carry) I was amazed to find that the largest one they had was a large. Am I the only guy that wears a 2-X shirt? Even though these shirts cost $120.00, I would have bought an extra large and dealt with the tightness.When I asked the counter person, he just shrugged his shoulders as if to say. Hey! Too "F" 'ing bad!When I buy gear, I spend top dollar, and if the guy (or gal) behind the counter can't even try to be nice (let alone offer some help) then this shop has all the money they need.It's not like they have the market cornered in Maupin either.There's a great little shop just across the bridge to the right called Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop, and that guy is always friendly and helpful.I'll never go into the Deschutes Angler Fly Shop again.
