Enchanted Highway - Geese in Flight

A lane lined with cut out geese lead to the large sculpture of geese in flight. According to the app : “Geese in flight the world's largest scrap metal sculpture as recorded in 2001 by the Guinness Book of World Records are made up of over five miles of oil well tanks and pipe. ..[it] stands at 110 feet tall. 150 feet wide and weighs 78.8 tons.”I like how the patina on the scrap metal depicting the hills resembles patches of dirt seen through grass. I am ambivalent about that circle in the middle which probably depicts the sun.

This morning, it was like driving in soup. While I had decent visibility to see th road ahead, there wasn't an opportunity to see the interesting parts of the Enchanted Highway, so I continued along I-94 into Montana. I will need to return when I do a proper exploration of this area in better weather.I did manage to stop at "Geese in Flight" at the top of the highway. This interesting sculpture is about a half mile up a packed dirt road to a turnaround where you have a parking area and a kiosk that warns "No overnight parking.""Geese in Flight" stands 100 feet tall and is 150 feet wide. In 2002, it was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest scrap metal sculpture.

The Enchanted Highway is a must do. Make sure to give yourself enough time to stop at each sculpture for a photo op and stretch your legs. At the end of the highway, in Regent, ND you will find the Enchanted Castle Hotel. Gary Greff, the Mastermind behind the sculptures, will most likely be there. Make sure to ask him about his story and how he went from School Teacher to Artist, and creating the Enchanted Highway. It's worth the stop.

Neat place to stop and see. World's Largest Scrap Metal Sculpture. Many more down the Enchanted Highway toward Regent, and the have a movable sculpture in regent. There are a flock of geese along the road to escorts you to the sculpture.

Quite an interesting monument to the local geese and the artisan is a local iron worker/welder. Right off the highway about 10 miles east of Dickinson. Something you truly have to see to understand the dimensionality and skill it took to create this magnificent piece!

The first of these amazing art located just north of the interstate. The beginning of the Enchanted Highway worth the 32 mile drive south of the interstate where you'll find more amazon roadside art.

Just saw in from the Highway. We were going to stop, but it didn't look like much. I can still appreciate the work someone put into it and it adds conversation to a boring drive through the prairie.

Off the beaten track in North Dakota.After spending time at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, we discovered "The Enchanted Highway" off I-94 to the tiny town of Regent ND (pop. 165). Twenty years ago, Gary Gregg got farmers and ranchers in the area to weld gigantic roadside tin folk art in an effort to revitalize the town. Not sure it worked but it was fun to explore.

Saw this from I-94 and decided to stop for a quick photo. It is one of a series of large sculptures along the 32 miles of two lane highway that run south of I-94 down to the small town of Regent, North Dakota. If you have the time a drive down the Enchanted Highway is well worth the Effort. The other sculptures are spaced about 5-Miles apart.
