My girlfriend and I decided to adopt through the AAA event at petco here in Wilmington. Melinda was VERY rude right from the start as well as the rest of the ladies there. We eventually found our sweet kitten and after waiting what felt like all day we got around to the paperwork. She questioned us very throughly, more so like an investigation rather. She questioned whether our other girl cat would be okay with her and we should really get a male but upon other research and vet talk, two girls would be fine as long as they bonded. She really was upset that we didn’t give into her “knowledge” but she signed off on the adoption. (Our two girls are the most amazing sisters just as an fyi)Just yesterday we went in possibly looking for a kitten and witnessed such horrible treatment to the poor cats. Half of them were labeled with problems such as aids or chlamydia. When feeding the cats they threw the food at them and even said to the poor cats “that’s fine, eat it off the floor”….we also saw Melinda and her volunteers remove a cat from a locker to a carrier and the cat fought back in which made Melinda made and yelling in the store and raising her hands to the cat as it is clearly scared and hissing at her. They literally pinned the cat down, threw it around, etc. until they got it in the carrier. My partner and I were horrified. Another issue is we had with Melinda is her lack of knowledge (in which she thinks she has) she told us once before that two girls wouldn’t work and if we wanted another cat it would need to be a boy but all of a sudden three girls would work?? She also questioned our landlord about having 3 pets, which is not a lie, why would we risk paying fines and getting evicted for a kitten?? Melinda and the volunteers there are extremely rude and narcissistic. We have been judged, lied too, belittled, etc. AAA is a great organization but the PEOPLE running it, especially the Petco location are HORRIBLE. Please watch out when going there, I know so many cats are in need but you may get yourself in a situation with these guys. Beware!!

I adopted a cat through them at Petco. They were very kind and helpful through the adoption process. Told me to reach out if anything was wrong with her in the first 30 days. She was not FIV tested. Within 2 weeks she started to get very sick and have a distended abdomen. They told me she was 2, the vet said she is probably 5 or 6. She was with her mother and I was told they were not a bonded pair. After reading the paperwork I found out that they were very bonded. I texted Melissa about it and she didn't even know which cat I was referring to. Her response was "right". My heart breaks that I seperated a bonded pair.

We had gone to Petco during one of the Adopt An Angel event to adopt a kitten. We had looked at the options and decided upon a cute little cat. Then one of the volunteers had given us the paper work to fill out. Once we finished filling out our paperwork, it took about 1 hour 30 minutes to finally get to talk with the staff about the adoption. However, the lady we spoke to was very rude and had refused to let us adopt because “we would harm the cat by allowing it outside.” She argued that because we wrote “inside or outside” on our paperwork, we couldn’t get it. This had upset not only me, but my siblings who were extremely excited to finally have a pet in the house.

Very disappointed in my recent encounter at Petco with their volunteers. My mother, girlfriend and myself waited around for an hour while they setup, to have them review my application for a kitten. The old volunteer, unfortunately I didn't waste time getting her name, asked me why my dog was an outside dog. I told her, because he has an acre of fenced in land that he enjoys roaming. She replies "so why don't you let your dog come inside?". He isn't forced outside, he just loves the outdoors, but he is welcome to come and go as he sees fit. We have doggie doors... Then she ridicules me over the fact that my dog is not neutered and tells me her "board" will not allow the adoption of a cat to someone who has not neutered their dog. Apparently she is unaware of the fact that felines and canines are unable to breed. Even though the kitten I was wanting to give a beautiful home, is already neutered. Very unprofessional of her, the other ladies were nice though 😉. I'd go elsewhere, Craigslist has cats all the time.

I adopted my cat through the system and it wasn't very organized. I hated it. They were so rude to me and they almost didn't let us adopt him because we hadn't read about red food dye! It was a horrible experience but I love my cat and so glad I got him.

We adopted our three fur babies from Adopt an Angel over the years and had a great experience every time. The kitties all look happy and healthy in the pet store. Wish we could’ve adopted all of them. We were given a folder with great information and a contact number to call if we had any questions or concerns. I feel they talked with us and asked us many questions sort of an informal interview. They told us the history of the kitty and even what they were use to eating. We were informed on the best way to introduce the kitty into our home. We couldn’t be happier and we are so in love with our fur babies. We worked with Melinda two of the three times and we could tell she volunteers because she very much cares about the animals and wants to find them the right forever home. Thank you Adopt An Angel for all you do to save animals. We love our kitties!!!❤️I see some negative reviews and my thought is that if you see something you believe needs improvement— volunteer or do a fundraiser to help the nonprofit have more resources to improve the areas you feel could use help. Give of yourself. Get involved and be hands on. Donate supplies if nothing else. 💗🙏🏻

Most definitely one of those places that if you adopt, watch where they're coming from. Overall, it's not terrible. The 1 star is how they say if any issues, return them. I text Melinda about a feline behavior issue, and she straight up tells me I hadn't listened to her, I hadn't done anything right, etc. Sherry was okay, I liked her a little bit. Got one cat from her. Melinda on the other hand, yes she was nice to begin with, said some very negative things about my roommates puppy, but decided to donate items, which was nice, but definitely a what you call assumption.Definitely make sure you know what you're getting into. Because you won't ever know.

I adopted two cats from AAA about 5 years ago and I have fostered 70+ cats for Adopt an Angel. I love this organization and all that they do for cats. They are affiliated with Fix a Friend which helps all the surrounding counties with low cost pet spay and neuter. I am so lucky to have found them.I foster under Melinda and the cat's best interest is her first priority. We devote so much of our time in hopes that these animals get to go to good homes. We are not paid. We are volunteers and have our own jobs and lives. We spend our own money to care for these animals. We are caring for cats that are not ours in hopes that they will find loving homes. We do our best to help these babies that have been dumped and left to suffer.

I am saddened by the lack of care this organization shows for its animals. Beware of this place. One of my best friends adopted a kitten through this organization and the kitten was immediately having issues. The kitten first had a common eye infection then soon after having that fixed began having trouble breathing and a runny nose. The kitten was taken to the vet where they said the kitten had an upper respiratory infection and fluid in the kittens lungs. The vet tested the kitten and my friend was made aware that her kitten had Feline AIDS. The vet said the kitten had this since the kitten was 4 or 5 weeks old meaning it was in the care of Adopt An Angel when this occurred. The beautiful, sweet and amazing kitten passed away the next morning. This could have been avoided if the kitten was tested and diagnosed early enough but my friend was never told about the kitten having Feline AIDS. This means that the organization either did not get the kitten tested properly or they withheld care and information that would have been necessary to save the kitten. Melinda was who my friend dealt with and she was the most disrespectful woman I have ever heard. My friend knowing that Feline AIDS is contagious immediately contacted Melinda so that she could notify and check out all the other kittens that was around my friends kitten. Melinda’s response was that my friend was just a bad parent and that she thinks the vet is lying and that she knows more than the vet. She is a disgusting human being for saying those things after my friend just lost an animal she cared so deeply for. All my friend wanted to do was hopefully help other people who have kittens from the same litter or cats from the same play area so that those people could get their kittens/cats treated so they don’t have to die like my friends amazing kitten did. The cats and kittens deserve way better than a nasty person such as Melinda. If you have gotten a kitten or cat more recently from this Adopt An Angel please go immediately to the vet to get them checked for Feline AIDS. Please consider adopting from another organization as there are many others that take care of their animals and do not blame the parent of the animal the same day that the animal dies. Shame on you Melinda!

Me and my friend and her bf went to go look at kittens because they were wanting to adopt. right away the lady who was helping them was extremely rude and belittled them. she made remarks about them being young and in college and that adopting a cat was a 15 year commit, which we all obviously know. she asked them where the cat was staying and my friend said the cat would be in a one bedroom apartment and the landlord allows the residents to have 2 pets. The lady assumed that my friend lived in the apartment alone but her boyfriend clarified that it’s his apartment but my friend (his girlfriend) stays there but has a dorm at uncw. she started flipping out automatically and calling them liars and put the adoption papers down and told them they are not allowed to adopt from them. my friends bf was trying to explain the situation about how the cat would be staying at his apartment but his gf stays there to and it would be their cat together. the lady was not having it at all and was yelling at them. it was extremely rude and made us all feel very uncomfortable. this lady literally ruined my friends day because all they wanted to do was adopt a cat, especially because a lot of those cats are rescues and they would be giving it a loving home. i’ve personally never seen a person act like that before and am still completely in shock. please check all your options before stepping into this place. absolutely ridiculous.

Definitely had issues with Melinda. She is very narcissistic. She belittles what you are trying to say while making sure YOU know she’s right. Had the same issue with a female cat we adopted from her 9/2020. Instead of listening and without me having a full blown cussing match with her all I wanted to know was how I could surrender the cat back to her care. The cat had no issues but she tried to make it seem like they were minor issues and that it was the previous home not the cat so once we had the cat we seen the issues and tried to return her. We done everything possible from changing litter to cat food etc. with no results. She assisted once with a vet bill which was appreciated but had we known about the issues prior we may have went another route.

Would rather spread incurable feline diseases to healthy cats instead of doing their due diligence and getting cats properly tested. We got attached to a cat that we were forced to bring back after we found out it had feline aids. After bringing it to their attention, we were told they would rather not know about the diseases the cats have. Luckily we kept the cat quarantined from our senior cat because the adoption agency would much rather FIV spread to healthy cats than properly test them. As a shelter, there is absolutely no excuse to be as willfully ignorant as they are. FIV positive cats can have decent lives, but they are ensuring the disease will continue and eventually kill other pets that would not have come across it any other way. The shelter is rude, ignorant, and I feel terrible for the cats in their care.

We adopted a beautiful male cat from this organization, thinking it would be a wonderful experience working with a local rescue agency against euthanasia. A few days after adopting our kitty, Melinda, a woman I had never met, SHOWED UP AT MY DOOR, at 9 pm yelling about how our cat was not supposed to be adopted out to us and how the woman working at the adoption fair that day didn't have the authority, etc. I ended up having a 45 minute conversation with this woman. The following 4 months consisted of both her and the cat's former foster family texting repeatedly. When the cat got out and got lost, three of them showed up, once again, on a Saturday night at 9 pm. My neighbor saw them sneaking around my yard and called me. I went to the door and there they were. My daughter had been crying for days, but it was said that we were uncaring and negligent. I was yelled at until I ended the conversation, stating that this was harassment.I also did say that if we found the cat, I would let them know, out of kindness even though we were shown very little of that. He was an amazing cute little guy and I could see why they were sad that he had been lost.

Overall, I had a really positive experience with Adopt an Angel. Adopting my cat was quick but I was allowed time to bond with her at the event. My issue is with one person I had contact with who left a really bad taste in my mouth. The kitty I adopted ended up having feline AIDS, which is no issue at all. Feline AIDS shows up as respiratory problems in cats. For a week or two after taking her home and to her initial vet check up, she had a runny nose and a little wheezing. The vet suggest I call and see if I can get a medical history, to determine if it was a flare up from the stress of moving, the litter, or maybe just a chronic issue. I called her foster, Sherry, to tell her about what was going on and see if this was usual. Immediately, she told me I was being irresponsible and not understanding the responsibility of an animal, and how I’m not an advocate for my pet. I got no information from her and she just made me feel like I was doing something horribly wrong by even asking. Luckily, there have been 0 flare ups for the year and a half I’ve had her and it was likely just a sensitivity to the litter the foster had been using! She’s happy and healthy as can be now.No ill will to anyone at Adopt an Angel, everyone was super kind except what was mentioned. I’d like to think I caught Sherry on a bad day, but huge thanks to the staff that did help me get a better medical history when my first option didn’t work.

It's unfortunate that some people feel that they need to talk bad about this charity. The amount of dogs and cats that they rescue every year is astounding. Not to mention feral communities that they spay and neuter plus give shots and medical care to. They even have a low-cost vet clinic for people in the community to ensure that everyone can give their pet the care they need without spending a lot of money. None of the people that volunteer for adopt an angel are paid for the enormous amount of time they put into all the animals that they rescue., and many are working full-time jobs outside of volunteering. Especially this year with the pandemic going on there are an astronomical amount of owners that are dumping their pets in shelters or on the street and they have rescued them all with only a handful of core volunteers. They have always gone above and beyond when I have done adoptions from them. Instead of throwing stones why don't you try to volunteer your time at a Pet Rescue Agency. God bless this Rescue Agency and the others in New Hanover County that do great things on a shoestring budget

Since I can’t update my last review, I’ll make a new one.AAA through the time I’ve known them has definitely made some better. No more problems, and definitely made it better. Leelou is my top favorite cat I’ve adopted here, love her to death.

Pre-COVID I adopted my shy hound mix, in 2017 and last year my pittie mix rescue. Sherry may seem strict and "rude" but she is adamant about making sure a new adoptee has the right environment, ie a nice big fenced yard to romp, and move into a house with other pets that get along. Many rescues often have issues, and/or have been abused, sadly, and it takes a TON of patience and love to work with most. Because I grew up having knowledge of large pure breed dogs, my rescues are thriving and are the most grateful, loving and goofy pups. They're not perfect, but who in this world is? Sorry about the cats with issues, I wish I had advice but I am allergic :( In the midst of all this mess in the world, I'd support these organizations since there are a number of impulsives out there who did not think through having pets while isolated and sadly dont know what the meaning of forever homes are and give these abandoned animals up. I wish people would see the value in adopting an older dog or cat, they are so grateful, have gone through their growing, messy stages and just want a nice home...so that's what I gave my 5- and 6-yo pooches!

Stopped in to the pet store they are located in wilmington and the gentleman that was "Helping me" was so rude and got mad at me when he left the cage open and keys in my possession. (He didn't know me) he then came back 10-15 mins later and was mad that I was petting a cat in a cage. Made no sense to me or anyone else around.

Yes me and my boyfriend who is 19 requested to adopt their cat Christie we were waiting and waiting then we got a call from this lady from adopt an angel basically belittling my boyfriend saying that we must have oodles and oodles of money to have our prior pets which isn’t even ours we’re just looking after that we would not have enough money nor time to adopt this kitten She said that she did not see how he was managing let alone doing it
