This is a review of the Dunrovin Country Store. We drove 3 hours to come here specifically as a destination stop cuz we'd heard so many great things and read all the wonderful reviews. Greatly disappointed is an understatement. It sits about 10 ft off the road with barely any safe parking to get in and out off of a main highway and it actually looks like it's been abandoned from the road as you can see by the pictures. Definitely not handicap accessible.Inside the store it's definitely old school cramped and random which can be a good or bad thing.Having two teenagers behind what look like the main counter one eating a sandwich and staring out into space and the other staring at a computer screen isn't really warm and inviting to an old style country Amish store. We travel all over looking for old time hardware stores, old style country stores and Amish food stores and this is on the low end historic or not. What really put us off the edge was seeing the poor condition that the so-called exotic animals were living in. If any water it was dirty and looked like it had been stagnant for a while All the animals not only look beyond sad and dirty the place just looked miserable.

This was a very unique place. I don’t even know how to describe it, but it was enjoyable to walk through. The animal sanctuary was very interesting and had all kinds of animals. The store had every kind of jam, jelly, and sauces that you can think of. Great way to spend an hour or so.

Overall, it was a super cute place. We drove past to take our kid to her appointment and decided to stop by on the way back. The shop is pretty crammed but had sooo many options, it was great! Definitely something for everybody there. The part with the animals wasn’t as great, they should definitely have larger cages. It smelled to high heavens.. have been to many big zoos that have not even smelled that bad. We had to leave the animal part sooner than expected because the smell. I enjoyed saying hello to the parrots & them responding! I would go back, but just for the shop & I am glad we stopped by.

Do not support this place! They do not know how to take care of exotic animals and the reptiles are malnourished and suffering greatly. They dismissed us when we brought it up. Called Sheriffs department and they informed us that they’ve been trying to get them shut down for awhile but have backstops because they are exotic animals. Very very sad to see abused animals. Tortoise was so malnourished it was eating pine straw. Then the employee said this is normal! It’s water bowl had bacterial spores and pine needles and looked like it hadn’t been changed in a month. Do not support! So freaking sad.

Wow....what a store. Described as a country store but I've never seen such an eclectic assortment of goods. Lots of delicious goodies like candies, jams, jelly, ice cream, sodas, and on and on. Huge assortment of pet items and outdoor decorations. This is a must see store. To much to list or describe.

First time visiting this store and I gotta say it was one of my favorite stores I have ever been in. The variety of stuff to buy is unreal. It’s very similar to the Mast General Store in Valle Crusis. After visiting the store we adventure outside and found a mini zoo filled with talking birds, reptiles, and other exotic animals. It’s was all free to see. I recommend this place with anyone with kids. Very clean and friendly staff. Will be coming back for second visit soon.

Don’t miss out on this very unique shopping & mini-zoo location! Could have stayed all day looking at the beautiful live birds and other animals in the zoo area behind the store. People of all ages will really enjoy this place, and we had a fantastic time. Plus so many decor items, unique gifts and all types of jams, jellies, candy, fudge, ice cream & snacks. Guaranteed you’ll find the perfect gift for that someone who is hard to shop for. Huge variety of art & decor for the yard and home.

Definitely planning a trip back soon. Over an hour drive to go here but it is well worth it. I need to restock on my salted Carmel pecan honey butter and pet some animals! Great place to bring the family! Do the tour! It's worth it to feed and pet the animals you don't get access to without the tour!

What an awesome place! This is a hidden gem honestly. The "zoo" area is completely free so I figured the store would be insanely overpriced but it really wasn't and they had tons of really cool stuff. Lots of handmade stuff. The birds are all really nice and the staff were really nice too. Will definitely take family when they stop by.

This place sales some rare to find items. Very interesting! There's a bird sanctuary in the back of this place. I bought some eucalyptus raw honey. It's delicious. Look at the photos below.

Nice place! More items in the shop than you could ever physically see 👀, probably not good for anyone with allergies though, you can literally find anything here, there's even a fudge/icecream shop inside! As well they house exotic birds, farm life, reptiles, and koi here! That area as well feel like there is no end, so there's never a dull moment when it comes to the discovery of it all!

This is the absolute best place to go! Shopping for quaint items, plants, sculptors, Jams, jellies, candies, incense - you name it, they have it.Wonderful, polite staff. AND exotic birds, animals. Some of the birds talk, all of them are beautiful. The animals are well taken care of - they have added many more since last year - peacocks, hares, monkey, alpaca, goats - and lots more!!See for yourself - worth the drive (even when gas prices are crazy)!

I have lived in the area for years but never visited this little store. It is a hidden gem and I highly recommend stopping by to see for yourself! The area in the back is awesome too!!I returned today after about 2 months since my last visit, this place is spectacular!

This is a really interesting and unique place. If you look carefully you can find things here that you might not be able to find elsewhere. It's really great to browse the wares and have some ice cream or fudge with the family. They must have a lot of problems with people's children touching everything because there are signs to that effect everywhere. Which is most unfortunate and disrespectful to the establishment. The parking situation can be a little crazy so try not to back out onto the road if you have to. The oncoming traffic can be hard to see if goes very fast. They also have any animals saying she worry that you can donate to. It reminds me a lot of the country stores of my childhood. Highly recommended!

What an absolute gem!! Talked with the owner (pictured) a very kind and caring person. All animals, farm animals to reptiles, and tropical birds are rescued, they do not sell, or breed any animals. All enclosures are built by the owner and he and his team are constantly working to ensure that the areas are clean, repaired, and maintained.Proceeds from the extremely eclectic store support the sanctuary. The General Store is any but, they sell, fudge, ice cream, coffee, baked goods, spice blends, wind chimes, X-Mas decorations, honey, polished gemstones, hot sauces, plants, cast iron cooking appliances, wood cutting boards. It is just a fun spot!10/10 - Try a Salted Carmel Affogato (espresso on top of ice cream)

This store has so much to offer, it's almost overwhelming. Their fudge is outstanding, the coffee is exotic and delicious. There are so many unique items, I get something new every time I come by. There's an exotic bird exhibit in the back along with plants and other items meant for your home garden. It's always an amazing experience at Dunrovin!

Great place to visit with the kids, also a tropical bird paradise outback that’s a must see. Fresh baked goods go out most Mon & Friday with bread being baked fresh on Friday. Smells amazing in there on Friday! Must visit if you’re passing through or visiting NC or a local, they have a large inventory of products and foods.

Absolutely tragic to see beautiful, exotic animals living in such cramped, dirty environments. Saw multiple animals without water or what water was there was discolored and had plant matter floating in it.Do not get me started on those poor, poor tortoises! Clearly malnourished and again with abysmal looking water. They are in desperate need of an investigation for animal cruelty.

This is store is more than a store… it’s an experience! They have lots of parrots, McCalls, a pony, a lama, exotic birds, ducks, peacocks and more! The backyard grounds of the store are full of surprises! They have quite an extensive gift shop too.

Such a cool store!! Tons of homemade foods, pastas, canned and jarred sauces, pickled items, jewelry, games, a small bakery counter and ice cream. What I mentioned is just a small portion of the items they carry. The aviary out back is delightful. I will post photos next time I go.

This giant Country Store / Gift Shop sits on Route 1 just north of Pinehurst. It's part country store, with fresh cheeses, meats, specialty sodas, fruits and nuts and other grocery sundries, part gift shop, with trinkets, nic nacs, painted signs, magnets and keychains, part home decorating center, with garden fountains, plants, unique furniture and household decorations of every size for the native American, cowboy or pirate in the family, and part museum with antique furniture, farming implements and household items hanging from every rafter. We stopped to get some local souvenirs and ended up finding Christmas gifts and birthday presents as well. It took the kind ladies ringing us up 10+ minutes to carefully bag our haul.We spent over an hour exploring every nook and cranny, and we didn't even get upstairs or out back to the exotic animal sanctuary, where they rescue abandoned birds and other exotic pets that are no longer wanted. We will definitely be stopping again and again everytime we go to Pinehurst. We have to. There's still a lot to see, and it's the only place to get a birch beer south of the Mason Dixon line.

This is a great place to visit and spend time.We had no idea there were lots of birds and animals in the back so we were pleasantly surprised. The store has practically everything you can imagine to buy. I was excited that they had Jones Soda and Dad’s Root Beer. Also, the lady that served ice cream was so sweet and helpful!

Dunrovin Country Store never disappoints. I love taking day trips with my family there to see the birds and the other animals they have. They are making new bird enclosures and have a few new animals like Walter the monkey 🐒 and Artic Fox. And of course when we go we always have to get icecream! 😉

I am appalled at all of the 5 star reviews. I was hoping for a clean, well organized store to buy some things from on vacation. Expired food products and dirty. It needs an overhaul and deep clean from the outside into the inside. Inside there was a bucket for a leak in the roof. I looked up and full of mold. I don't think it's rained in a few days. Shame. They did offer something for everyone. I suppose stop here if it's an emergency to buy something.

This place has gotten expensive over the years. This building may also no longer be safe for food preparation with the amount of structural issues, rot, and mold in places. No working bathroom for at least a year. Just a place full of junk and overpriced items now. The facade has worn away.
