We have rescued two amazing dogs from here and the process was simple and quick. The staff was great and you can tell how passionate they are about what they do. I can promise you that some of these lowly ranked reviews are completely inaccurate and they likely left a bad review because they didn't go through the proper process of applying for a rescue, and rather, they just showed up to the shelter. The staff here has always been pleasant to work with and they do everything in their power to find animals a good home.

I can’t say enough about the friendly staff and environment this place provides for rescue fur-babies. Many aren’t aware of the rules and regulations set upon them for handling certain situations, and it’s hard to see all sides from just the outside. This place does not get the credit they deserve. We have been blessed to be able to rescue 2 babies from here to add to our home of rescues, and assisted in helping find homes for 3 others for friends or family members. They have each brought so much happiness and joy into our home. We will always rescue from this shelter to add to our fur-family! #adoptdontshop

I showed up at the end of their day afyer driving 2 and 1/2 hours, but the awesome staff still took the time to listen to me, identified possible candidates for adoption that would get along other dogs, (I have one from a previous adoption) and explained the process of adoption clearly.They were not only professional, but it was obvious they truly care about their charges.I adopted Koda, a year old lab mix. He has agreed to a name change and during our drive home we settled on Porter.Thank you so much Rowan Animal Shelter Staff for making this possible! ❤️ Photo is of him trying his first Pup Cup. I adopted a dog from here in October of 2022. To be honest, my first time going there was a little bit disappointing for that some of the staff were rude. However, when I went back to pick up my dog, it was a terrific experience and I can tell the staff is doing their best considering how busy they are! I can’t imagine it is an easy job! You can tell they truly want to place the animals in good homes.

They do everything they can for these babies. I have a pitbull I rescued from here and hes nothing short of amazing.I applied a few weeks ago to volunteer, I hope I hear back soon!

We adopted a kitten from here about a year ago. Very clean place and the cats where very well taken care of (we didn’t go into the dog side of the shelter since we just wanted to adopt a cat). We were able to spend time in the kitten area and take each kitten out and decide which one we wanted. Once we decided we let the lady at the desk know and she started the paperwork. It was a very smooth process. The ONLY reason I am giving it 4 stars is I could not find a vet in my county (even called 4 other vets in a neighboring county) that would accept the spay voucher. Then because the kitten was only 12 weeks, I was given different ages to spay her by 3 different vets- so my voucher became invalid by the time she was spayed. (They say if you get it done and return to the shelter with voucher and receipt from the surgery they will reimburse you the $70). I really wish the shelter would just go ahead an spay/ neuter the animals before they leave- lots of other counties do this.

We got Leon from there but then we adopted bumm we had him for a day because he wouldn't fit in our tiny house because he was way too hyper and we didn't we know how much we were going to have to feed him even though my family are broke and and the lady at the front desk said he need to manner trained of his hyperness they tell people on Facebook of how was brought back instead of mining there own business that's why I'm giving a 3 star but bumm is a good dog

Called about a dog and asked if they were cat friendly. They said the only way to test that is to adopt them and bring them home as they don't cat test. You wouldn't be eligible for a refund if you get a cat aggressive dog. Makes no sense. Pure laziness on their part and lack of effort.

Both Sasha and Tara were extremely kind and helpful while I was calling to inquire about a dog, who was up for adoption. I live in another state and they both made a lot of time to answer as many questions as possible and helped ensure that this dog was adopted. It was evident from my multiple conversations with them that they truly want the best for these animals. I cannot imagine working in a state run facility and having to be “blamed” for the ignorance of others who refuse to take the proper care for their animals, which is why these shelters are overrun. The women who work at this shelter are some of the kindest people you will meet and it’s truly not their fault that so many animals are met with ill fate. I can assure you that during their time at this facility, these animals are shown nothing but love. Please consider this shelter for your next pet and please be kind to the workers and volunteers here; they are doing their best with an unfortunate epidemic of many homeless animals.

Yesterday I adopted a dog from the shelter and the whole process was simple. I went on the waiting list and received an email that I was number 2. On day of adoption, I called beforehand to check if the dog had been adopted, was told person in front of me never showed. So I told them I am on my way, and I got to meet Tara, who was so nice. She went through all the paperwork and answered all questions that I had. It was quick and I got to take my baby home.

This is a kill shelter that only gives animals 14 days if healthy until their last day.They also lie about the animals. They don’t do proper testing. My in-laws adopted a dog into their home from this shelter and they were told she was okay to be in a multi pet home. She is NOT they’re now having to move the dog to a single pet home after a whole day of breaking up fights. She’s also not fixed never heard of a shelter that didn’t spay/neuter all their animals to help reduce the over population. Kind of thought that was law? and is suppose to be one of the perks of choosing to adopt. Do not fund this shelter do not surrender your pets to this shelter. There ARE NO KILL SHELTERS AROUND do your research and do not use this shelter they do NOT care about the animals or the people.

I tried to adopt and was turned down immediately because I was moving but had not moved. We already had a house with a huge yard and would have been amazing as we had other animals in the past and enjoy just spoiling. We are strict with vet appts and do anything we can to make our pets lives the best possible.I was banned from getting an animal here and am still afraid to adopt after 10 yrs. I have not had another animal. This completely shut us down. I was accused of getting an animal I would not care for or would have sold it or given it away. They acted as if we would have harmed the fur baby. It's a shame how badly damaged this one interaction was but the way I was spoken to was beyond terrible.

I had a great experience with RCAS. The process was simple and streamlined. Staff was very professional. I dont know where I would be without my furry best friend. She was well taken care of when I adopted her, and we came home with some goodies and information packet with at home instructions and follow up care. I would recommend them because their heart is in the right place which is the welfare of the animal and the perfect human fit.

The people at this shelter are professional, friendly, and helpful. It was obvious that they love and care for the animals in their charge. There is an excellent vet on staff who takes great care of the animals’ medical needs.When My cat was picked up as a stray, the staff tried to get in touch with me right away and appeared to be very compassionate.

found an old stray dog in the storm, brought him here and the woman at the front desk was so sweet. carried him in gently, spoke so kindly to us and i felt great leaving him! 😊

It’s really unfair when you wait for over a hour at the gate and they allow a rescue to come pick up all the puppies left and there are families there to adopt them. That rescue isn’t going to sell the puppies at a decent price. Rescues should be completely separate from a adoption center. Thanks for doing this and crushing my sons heart. If your going to allow a rescue center to come get them they should be forced to wait until the end of the day. There was a line of families trying to get these dogs. To “rescue” them and now they just have to go back into another system.

We have 3 babies from Rowan county animal shelter, 2 dogs and a cat. The people there are very nice. They keep Facebook as up to date as possible. It’s always clean when we are there. Our dog Maggie was sent with a spay voucher and ended up already having been spayed. They were very nice and issued a refund for the voucher very timely. Although we live in cabarrus county we will continue to adopt from Rowan because of the great experiences we have had here.

Not sure why the reviews we've seen. We had an easy adoption experience and the staff is devoted to the animals'welfare. We adopted one as others were being brought in for surrender, shots, etc. It's a tough gig to keep up with the demand of strays, surrenders, puppies, etc. Support your local shelter.

Horrible kill shelter. 2 weeks for a dog to be adopted? how much does it really cost to keep them alive versus the cost of euthanized. For the price of killing a dog , you could easily sustain one for weeks. please just shut down or drastically change your ways

I would have to say this was the best experience I've had at a shelter. They were very friendly, all the dogs were clean and seemed very well taken care of. We found our fur baby and brought him to his forever home.

Yesterday Friday 09/16/2022 I went to the Rowan shelter, in person, after 4 calls that I made to see if Sky code A132403 was available. I drove 1 hour and 45 minutes and arrived around 12:40 pm. I asked the ladies at the front desk to adopte this sky for my mom. I was dressed in my work uniform and the ladies just looked at me and said “oh sky she don't like the person pet her, she try to bite you” and I said “can I see her?” And then they said “why do you want to see her?” My mom showed them the picture of the dog she had and said I want her.The 2 ladies then told us, if you want to breed her, is not recommended.This was completely unnecessary because we never stayed anything about breeding her.We try to do a beautiful action saving this dog and they denied us because of the way we looked.After that the lady behind the desk started to pet sky and This mad me very upset! Now I see that the attitude we revived was so racist, just because we are immigrants!this is not justice for us!I hope the happiness for her!

Very nice people and clean facility. Our new Boston Terrier puppy created chaos with our Labrador, 2 kittens, and older cat. Very hyper and we questioned our decision. Today our home is calm and I wanted to remind people these pets may be overly excited with the new faces and environment and deserve your patience. Don't make a snap judgement based on their first day behavior.

Please ignore the comments that say this is a kill shelter. If there are no alternatives, it *could* happen, but the shelter, rescue groups and fosters work tirelessly (ok, maybe a little tired) to prevent *any* healthy adoptable animal from ever being euthanized. Please have your pets sterilized and love & care for them properly. Adopt pets who need loving homes if you can, and if you must give a pet up, please try to work with rescues and shelters to place them as early as you can. It is a lot harder to find a home for a pet when you are moving out of town tomorrow than it is if you are leaving in a month or two.Long story short, this is a good shelter and a great place to adopt from. I have personally adopted two cats from here before I started fostering, and I have 19 cats in my home right now from this shelter, to ensure that they never have to resort to euthanasia. *Nobody* wants that to happen, but it requires a lot of help from many, many people to keep it that way. 💕

My mother broke shoulder this week she has a dog that bites ! So I loaded him up and arrived at shelter. Noticed that you have to call a number to surrender a pet ! This should be posted on website! The woman I spoke to was a smart but told me I should have called earlier in week ! Well I’m sorry stuff happens didn’t plan on surrendering dog but I don’t live here my mother does . This dog is very aggressive. And it only will tolerate my mother. And she can’t care for dog . There should be certain conditions that a immediate surrender can be done .
