We adopted sweet Mabel from the AHC in February! When we came in, I asked many questions about her once meeting her. Simple questions like how old is she? Is she good with other dogs/cats? And the man that helped me didn’t know anything about her or the other dogs I met, which rubbed me the wrong way. They told me she had puppies and a sister, got told 2 different stories of where she was found. Also, when we brought her home she has bald spots on her from allergies/itching and when I called and asked about it they had no idea about it. Idk what vet they use but it’s not a very good one. On top of that, they didn’t have a rabies vaccine paperwork for me bc of the company they used. So once I adopted her and told my vet we revaccinated her cause the vet didn’t even believe she got one. They told me they would send an email of her vaccine and never got it even after calling. The vet also told me she was under a year old and not a year. I was not impressed by the service at all. It felt like they didn’t care much about their animals and barely knew much about them, like they didn’t spend time with them. When I adopted my other dog from watauga humane society, they knew a lot about my other dog Milly’s personality and how old she was and how she was with other pets and I got all my vaccination records. However!!! I adore this pup more than words can say!! If anything, I hope this encourages ppl to go adopt from here more so they can have better homes!! I know this is a no kill shelter but I think these pups/cats deserve great homes! Our Mabel is wonderful, sweet, playful and besties with our other dog! I’m thankful that they gave her a second shot at life so for that I will always be grateful!!

We adopted Belle, an Aussie mix, from Avery humane a month ago. Our visit was wonderful. They had a clean shelter, nice employees, and well cared for animals. We will never regret going for Belle.

We adopted pepper a little while ago from here and our experience was great! Our application go approved fast and we went the same day to pick up pepper. Pepper is the first dog we’ve had so we had a lot of questions for the staff. Any questions we had the staff answered to the best of their ability and they didn’t get annoyed with all our questions. Overall our experience was amazing and we love pepper! We can tell she was loved and well taken care of at the humane society!

Meet Brisco! He's an absolutely adorable shepherd mix pup I adopted today at Avery Humane Society. He was very well taken care of, as were all the animals at this shelter. The staff were all super friendly and very eager to help me find the right match. I would highly recommend adopting from this shelter!

We adopted "Buddy" from Avery County Humane Society and had the best experience!!! I submitted my application at 8:05am was approved at 8:40am and drove 3 hours to get him at 2:00pm. I put in many applications at several different places and still have heard back from them! The ladies at Avery were the best!! Friendly and helpful! GREAT EXPERIENCE!!! if more rescues were as quick as these ladies the population of animal needing homes would be dramatically reduced!

Adopted a senior dog today from the ACHS. Every single inch of my encounter with the staff and the facility was professional, kind, and helpful. Facility was clean and welcoming and every person I spoke with, whether passing in the halls, staring at kittens in the lobby, or specific interactions regarding my dog adoption was helpful and smiling. They even have partnerships for vet visits and training sessions after adoption. Excellent.

I had adopted my best friend from the Avery County Humane Society. They were helpful and friendly everytime i visited. Most of the staff is very friendly and helpful. I have also had 2 dogs dogs fixed through them. They can be outrageous on their adoption fees and its mostly based on the breed of the cat or dog. So if you find a mix breed pit bull or a Siamese cat you will pay just a little more than just a mixed who knows what it really is dog or cat. They have a very nice clean facility. They have a shop inside the shelter where you can buy things for your pets and you can even purchase flea meds. During Christmas theh have an angle tree for the fur babies where you can adopt a fur baby without taking it with you...just like the salvation army tree...you pick a pet and bring it gifts for Christmas. Me and my children did that last year and will be doing it again this year. Its unlike any animal shelter ive ever seen in my life!

We love our little mutt, but she was presented as a 3 month old healthy pup. We took her to the vet, appreciate the coupon , but come to find out she’s closer to 6 months, deaf, and blind in one eye. Just saying, not sure what vet they use that doesn’t see she’s missing ear canal and her canines are half way down. Just be aware. We bonded immediately but have to say, not easy to train a deaf dog.

I have to say this is the friendliest most professorial and cleanest humane society we have seen around western NC or at least in a 50 mile radius, My wife and I purchased a home here in Newland one year ago and now decided it was time to add a kitten to the mix. So we checked out Avery Humane Society and so glad we did my wife fell in love quickly with Puffin a small back kitty. And it was a very easy and quick application process. What an impressive facility and staff. We adopted a 9 week old Jack Russell Terrier. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The facility is clean and bright. They sent us home with not only a sweet little girl but a with a goody bag as well. Can't say enough wonderful things about our experience. It was well worth the near 3 hour drive.

The employees at Avery County Humane Society are amazing! They are always friendly and helpful and I appreciate the extra effort Charlene went to by sending us videos and pictures of the puppy we adopted during the state lock down while we were waiting to be able to pick her up. Special thanks to the dog associates. You can tell they truly love the animals they take care of. I know our Daisy's sweet personality is partly due to the love and affection they showed her. We visited the shelter on Saturday morning and was very impressed with how clean the facility seems to be maintained and the friendly, knowledgeable and caring staff that they had readily on hand and happy to assist you with any questions and help with guidance as they assist you while initially getting acquainted and beginning your visit with the animal you are interested in possibly giving a forever home to as you get to know more about the animal and if it appears to be a good fit for your family as well as how you feel the animal seems to be reacting to you and your family as well, making sure both your family and your new potential fur baby seem to take to one another. The staff was very open & gave their honest opinions on the animals and what they felt the one you were questioning about would be best suited for in a future lifestyle based on the information they were given by the previous owner if that was the case when the animal was initially brought in and placed in their care to help find it a living home. I feel a rescue animal is Always a terrific choice when adding a forever friend to your family and if you are looking to do so I highly recommend Avery Humane Society as a great place to start. They are all very kind and caring about right placement of each animal as they go out of their way to make sure they are doing all they can both to make sure the animal up for adoption is happy with it's new placement as well as the adoptive family happy with their choice and that they are made aware of every piece of information they can be given up front in helping them make the best and most informative choice prior to an adoption.

I just adopted two dogs (siblings) from this shelter. I was so impressed with their facility. It was the cleanest I've ever seen and all the animals appeared very well cared for. It was also obvious that they truly care about the animals and work to find the best match for forever homes. I would recommend them to anyone looking to adopt. Waited 4-5 months for vaccinations for my puppy’s to be told I wasn’t accept because, I’m from a different area (understand that) but to wait that long and to be told “sorry we can’t take you” is disappointing, maybe could of told me that when I called months ago and even if you have volunteer’s you should let them know that you don’t accept people outside the area. mind you I haven’t gone anywhere else because I was on the “waiting list” I’m extremely sad and angry. I wasted 3-4 months hoping my puppy would finally get vaccinated.🙄

The facility is so nice, clean, and roomy for these animals! I was very impressed. My boyfriend and I adopted a stray kitten from Avery Humane Society, and he has been an absolute joy. He is so loving, and great with our dogs. He is proof that the employees really care about their work, and do their best to socialize the animals for adoption! I would so reccomend rescuing a pet from here. Also wonderful adoption prices for all the shots, and other vet services that are included.

I truly appreciate what they are doing but i believe it's time for them to rethink their rehire policy specially now with what this world is going through. They are so many people that have worked for this shelter that i know and yes they made a decision to stop working there for their on reasons but in these days and times the shelter should rethink on rehiring the ones that would come back that did a wonderful job at what the did at the shelter. Everyone deserves a second chance. They give dogs cats their second chance at a wonderful home shouldn't they do the same for the ones that use to work there that want to come back and help find these wonderful animals a home

We just recently adopted our second dog from Avery. They really care about seriously finding good homes for the pets they have there. All rescue pets coming into the shelter have full vet inspections along with all necessary shots and treatments. It is a first class shelter totally devoted to animal rescue. We have adopted two dogs from ACHS. The staff is wonderful! They love and care for the animals as though they are their own. They know a lot about each of them so can help find the best fit. Very clean shelter and the dogs get out of their pens and get outside time every day. The cat rooms are quite nice too. Our adoption process experiences have been extremely positive. We have two healthy and happy dogs/family members because of ACHS. Amazing organization and people.

Love this place. THE nicest pet shelter/adoption centers I've seen.My husband and I will want to adopt kitties here someday when we have our own place, but for now, we are happy to go play with them and give them attention. The kittens are always so fun, but the older cats always provide a sense of peace and relaxation. I've never seen a mean cat here. Some seem neurotic and playful to the extreme, but I think most are just content and happy, and ready for their new home! Sometimes the dog selection is lacking, sadly, because of some of the dog's past lives with humans that were unfortunately not ideal, they have a few dogs that are very barky and easily spooked.

I have for many years relied on the Avery Humane society to take animals dropped off by people at my house. I have also adopted some of my best friend's from them. Most recent is my cat, Rascal. I love her and am so glad they rescued her so she could be part of my life and family. Most recent, I work with the most amazing and caring family. People who take incredible pride in their jobs. I do not want to forget the incredible volunteers who come in. The donars and everyone involved in the success of this facility. A beautiful contribution to our community. I would encourage people to come be a part by volunteering. See for yourself how wonderful this place is.
